Storm damage?

So, you spent part of the weekend planting. Maybe you got your annuals potted up or your veggies in the ground. Then….the storm hit.

Did you or your plants sustain any damage?

We got torrential rain and hail here in Scandia, which is not too far from Hugo, where the tornado touched down. Fortunately, the hail stones weren’t big enough to do a lot of damage. The rain gauge says we got over two inches in about 30 minutes, and that was enough to wash most of my grass seed down the hill. Looks like I’ll be reseeding today.

I’m grateful to be doing that rather than picking up pieces of the roof or starting over with my garden.

We had rain overnight and I was thankful for it because I just got a bunch of wintersown seedlings in the ground and they really needed it. I think we are getting storms later which makes me realize I have lots of work to do before then.

Sunday afternoon, I drove up to Monticello to plant tomatoes and peppers for my aunt. We got done just before the rain hit. But in addition to rain, we got hail. Two waves of intense hail lasting 5-10 minutes each, with hail that ranged from marble-sized to an inch and a quarter in diameter.

Lost quite a few tomatoes and peppers, not an hour after planting. If that wasn’t disheartening enough, my van got hail damage.

The tragedy in Hugo puts it all in perspective, though.

I came home from the lake this afternoon and all my tulips were gone. All my hostas have ripped leaves. And my 40.00 pots are trashed. Any hope for repair??

We got no rain, no hail and no funnel clouds. But we did get straight line winds that left the gardens untouched, but removed half of a 50 foot spruce. It landed in a garden (bouncing off the house in the process). Amazingly enough, nothing in the garden got squashed - the damage was limited to some cosmetic scratches and one 8 foot section of squashed gutter. If the whole tree had come down, we’d be in a much tougher spot. The way it happened, I’m pretty thankful - particularly when compared to what happened in Hugo, and elsewhere.

We got a whole lotta nuthin’ in the city - it was a bit windy for about five mins - then it rained for about 3 seconds. I sure was glad not to have any hail though!

We (like the rest of the west metro) got pounded by the hailstorms last night. My hostas are completely destroyed, not a leaf or stem is unbroken. Any advice on what to do? Various websites say leave them as is, but the U says to cut them back to the ground. That seems pretty drastic…

Use BioGreen, it will speed up the reseeding of your lawn, use on plants, trees and shrubs, they will begin to produce new leaves very quickly. It’s an amazing product.
