Lookie what I just found!

I haven’t gone “mushroom hunting” since I was a kid, but I have some very vivid and wonderful memories of going with my father and grandfather through wooded hillsides looking for the fungus among us. Other people have old family photos of walleye or sunnies they’ve caught. In my family, we had photos of the sink full of mushrooms. Eating them was tasty, but finding them was better (and warmer) than looking for Easter eggs.

We’ve got a fair number of dead elms in our rambling backyard now and I’ve found one or two morels in the past years, but never more. Last night, while doing my daily circuit around the yard, I gasped when I saw a big yellow morel in plain sight. I’d never seen mushrooms on this side of the yard. I picked it, and then forgot about it until around noon, when I was telling GreenGirl Jaime about finding it. She thought it might taste good on pizza, and suddenly I had to jump up and go look for more.

Wandering through the wilder parts of our four acres, I was beyond delighted to find another morel. Then, just beyond it, still another. I grinned a huge kid-grin. Oh, happy day!

Then, just as suddenly, my fortune turned again. I looked around all the dead trees, and slightly sunny areas I thought might yield some mushrooms. I found only an errant golf ball. I bushwhacked through poison ivy to an area I’d had my eye on since the elms there died a couple of years ago and had no luck. I explored every nook and cranny to no avail. Pretty soon, I was asking the morel gods for just one more so I could end on a positive note.

When I got back to the spot where I’d started, I saw it …one more big yellow morel. Not a foot away from another I’d picked. Thank you, thank you, thank you I whispered to the gods, to my father, and to my grandfather. We’ll have fried mushrooms for dinner tonight.

And I’ll save a couple for Jaime’s pizza, too.

Are you a morel fan? Have you found many this year? Or is it enough to find them at local gourmet menus and supermarkets (how do you like to fix them)?

Hey, nice morels, Robyn!
I went out a couple times this spring. Didn’t do so well at first, but when I got my game on, I found a couple dozen. Nothing to match what my mushrooming friends found (200 in all), but it was enough to make me happy — and to make a couple of meals!

What an odd coincidence you posted this today. Yesterday I came home to 2 voicemail messages from people who found my phone number is a book about finding morels. They both said it’s listed under one of the sources where you can order morels. Big typo. If I knew where to find them, I wouldn’t sell them. I’d eat them all myself. :)

Robin, your finds bring back memories of an aunt I had as a child. She went every spring to an undisclosed location and came back with so many that she canned them! She had a breadcrumb coating she put on them and baked them. I never found as many as she did and the receipe is lost in time.

Oh, on a positive note, Fungiperfect has kits to innoculate sites so you can improve the odds. You need the site ( your dead elm sounds like a good place) and it takes two years to get a substantial harvest. I don’t have the right site but am tempted to make a pile of those free woodchips and innoculate it just because I want some too!

My grandpa used to take me out in our woods when I was a kid and we would come back with a few 5 gallon pails full. It was awesome. We dried a bunch of them. All summer we would have them every time we grilled steak.

We used to have them with steak too. I’m not sure why that was the tradition, but it was. I’m curious how people prepare them — and when they got to be so gourmet.

Last night, I dusted them in flour and then fried them in butter. They tasted just like I remember. Breadcrumbs sound interesting though. I know some people freeze or dry them. Canning — I’m not so sure about.

I’ll have to check into Fungiperfect. Thanks for the suggestion.

Also, anyone know if I should leave a few when I find them to promote future growth? Or does it matter?
