First radish

Every spring, I curse my back yard neighbor’s scrubby trees for their unwelcome shade and shower of seeds. But Saturday night, I was grateful for their protection. After the high winds and hail, I thought I’d have a garden full of goners. Instead, I had a garden full of leaves and a yard full of hail. The offending Chinese Elm trees were a ratty mess, but my seedlings were mostly intact.

Weird.

Weeding around the garden, I started to see red. My French Breakfast radishes leafed about two weeks ago, but according to the seed packet, I still had another two weeks to wait for actual radishes.

This little beauty (right) obviously didn’t read the seed packet. Between the dirt and leaves, it was hard to miss the telltale scarlet shoulders.

On Sunday night, I was lucky enough to eat the very first radish grown in my garden (Ha ha! I beat you to the punch squirrels!). Sliced and served on a bed of mixed greens, it was deeee-licious.

Have you eaten anything out of your garden yet? If not, what are you dying to see on your dinner plate?

We’ve enjoyed a few ripe strawberries (as have the squirrels). Dug up some potatoes for breakfast on Sunday. And we’ve added a little spinach and lettuce to the salad greens we get from the market.

Our tomatoes have blossoms already, too (unlike last year when we got nothing until August). That’s what I’m really looking forward to.

Yay for tomato blossoms! I remember your tomato frustrations from last year, povertyrich. You totally deserve a nice big harvest.

My potatoes have their first leaves and my spinach is almost big enough for a tiny side salad. I probably won’t get strawberries until next year, which means I have plenty of time to squirrel-proof the strawberry bed.

Wow, Jaime. That’s an iceberg radish in the first picture, right? Congrats on your radish. We’ve enjoyed asparagus and rhubarb, and tonight had the first salad of the season. Isn’t it wonderful to eat what you’ve grown?

Rhubarb! Thanks to my mom before she passed, I have a fabulous rhubarb plant that I’ve just started to really harvest. I too have tomato blossoms. I am trying out a Topsy Turvy tomato planter because of my limited yard space (I am in a townhome and I pretty much have perennials in my tiny garden). I’m hoping for lots of tomatoes, but will gladly trot off to the farmer’s market if mine don’t produce much.

We are enjoying the same meals right now … radishes and lettuce. All be it out radishes are much smaller then your big ones. We had a mint, arugula, fig, and prosciutto salad last night. It is good to use the mint early so that you start setting ground rules for it not to take over the garden.
