Garden gadgets from across the pond

When it comes to gardening, it seems like the UK is way ahead of us yanks. Planters, tools, boots and gloves, I can’t help but envy some of their solutions from everything from weeding to patio gardening.

GG reader Patty stumbled across this marvy potato barrel (right) from UK gardening institution, Suttons Seeds :

Hi Greengirls!

I’ve been trying to locate someplace here in MN (or at least the US!) that carries the potato barrel and/or strawberry tubs shown below. I love these, but refuse to pay to have them shipped from the UK! Any chance you or the rest of the gardening crew have any hints for me where to find these (or something similar)?

Thanks!
Patty

Truth be told, these pots make potato planting and harvesting look like a grab-and-go counter. (See how easily the cleaned-handed gardener fills her basket?) Seriously crush worthy. I’d like 3 or 4 of these on my patio, but I haven’t seen them in any TC garden center. Have you?

Not only does the gardener stay spotlessly clean but just look at the bountiful harvest!

It reminds me of my compost bin but instead of a lid it has a bottom. You could try altering a wooden planter by cutting out a side (or two) and reattaching it with a hinge & a latch. I’d definitely try it first on a cheapy to see if it works…

Somehow, they managed to open the doors of this contraption and harvest a few potatoes without any dirt spilling onto the patio. Amazing!

While I understand the demands of marketing, I think that gardeners want to see product photos that look a little more realistic.

Tracy at Timberglade is growing potatoes in trash cans.

Ha! For every seed potato, I get a dozen new potatoes, maybe a few more if they are fingerlings. She has almost a bushel!

Thanks for the Timberglade tip, Peter. That Tracy is sure crafty!

I agree with Peter, no dirt spilling and what clean potatoes! In addition to the trash can idea, I’ve seen where people roll wire, like chicken wire or something heavier into a tube and plant the taters in there, then just lift it up when they’re ready. That way, you can also keep adding soil, hay or what you choose as the leaves head up.

I have done the chicken wire cage for potatoes and it works quite well. I filled mine with leaves and/straw so the taters stayed cleaner, but not as clean as the picture above.

Being a first generation American of British parents I can attest that the Brits certainly are ahead in the gardening game. Got my love of gardening from my Grandfather and his “Allotment”. The Brits were ahead of the Organic and local production game as well, especially in Wales and Scotland. Best suggestion is to send an email to Gardener’s Supply recommending the product; they seem to be the trend starters in the US for a lot of the British gardening gadgets.
