Filling in the holes

Rain or shine, I’m going to be in the garden this weekend filling holes. Not the kind of holes that naughty dogs dig. The kind of holes that show up when your plants don’t make it through the winter. Or your plants get pummeled by hail. I’ve got both kind of holes in my garden.

I’m not a patient person, but I try to wait to fill holes made by plants lost to winterkill. I know it takes a while for some plants to get going in spring. So I wait. But the waiting’s over. The plants that haven’t shown by now aren’t going to show.

So I’m going to start filling. I’ll probably break down and go buy a few perennials. But I’m cheap, so I’m gonna pick up some half-price annuals and beg divisions from friends. (Thanks Judybusy, Greengirl, Mary Jane and Rhonda!)

I’m also going to get really creative in my placement of driftwood, cool looking rocks (really big ones) and pieces of metal that can pass as sculpture.

Anybody else dealing with bare spots in the garden? How are you going to fill them? And are you for or against yard art?

I’ve run out of holes to fill, and I still have plants to squeeze in.

Containers to the rescue.

I’ve got a couple of holes from ornamental grasses that came back last year, but not this year. Not sure what I’ll try next. I’ll probably go all out and get perrenials.
