YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

Yeah, okay. It’s a dumb headline. But I couldn’t resist. Yesterday was a very big day at Coop DeVille and I’m pretty eggcited. (that’s even worse, isn’t it?). We got our first egg!
It was the color of light caramel and perfect in its small, smooth shelled, flawlessly shaped egg-ness. Unfortunately, we slept in and missed the actual blessed event, but found it exactly where we’d hoped — in the nest box.
In fact, it was right alongside the golf ball we placed there to offer the power of suggestion (actually, so the chickens understand the purpose of the box). Since I just finished the nest boxes this week, I’m especially satisfied the hen found it an acceptable place to lay her first egg.
Though I don’t know for sure who laid it, I know who didn’t. It wasn’t Rosie or Vera, the Brown Leghorns. They will lay white eggs, as will Violet, Blue and Trouble, our trio of Blue Andalusians. Nor was it Carmella, Darla or Lola, the Araucanas/Americanas. They will lay blue or green eggs. That leaves one of the three Silver Wyandottes, one of three Black Australorps or one of three Buff Orpingtons. My vote is with one of the Wyandottes, but this is a mystery I’m going to love trying to solve.

That is totally egg-citing! Congrats to you and your girls.
More important, how did it taste?
Thanks, Jaime. We cracked the egg in the evening and Deidre (my partner) fried it and ate it. She reported it had a wonderfully orange yolk and great flavor.
That is so cool! What a fabulous experience! And, it’s great to know EXACTLY where your food came from, and that it was well cared for.
It is sublimely cool, I think. In fact, I think I’ll go see how the hens are doing now. Maybe they’ve left me another gift!
If I counted correctly, you have 17 layers. What kind of production volume are you expecting when all the girls start producing? That sounds like a lot of eggs!
We actually have 19 hens (I forgot the Speckled Sussex duo, Martha Graham and Isadora) and the roo, Mr. Mukluks. We’d like to get 12-16 eggs a day, and look forward to selling our excess to friends and neighbors. We’ve already got egg cartons standing by and business cards printed (”Farmette-fresh eggs”). Oh, and a refrigerator. Our regular one is currently full of blueberries, raspberries and cucumbers.
So what does it take to be included in the friends you’re selling to? =)
Yeah, how do I sign up?
Wow. I am not trying to use this space to advertise, but I’m happy to talk with any interested parties. Feel free to e-mail me directly at robdoc@robdoc.com if you want.
Congratulations Robyn. I can’t believe you have 19 hens! Healthy, tasty eating ahead for you. There is nothing better than a fresh egg.
