One tough tomato

Walking back from a tasty lunch at the Bombay Bistro, I spotted this tough tomato growing out a grate next to the light rail tracks.

Seriously, with this warm weather, it will probably blossom and set fruit by next week. Perfect for commuters on the go.

So, how do you suppose this tough tomato came to be? Could someone’s lunch leftovers really sprout in this unfortunate location?

PS: Thanks to Amy S. for her quick camera work.

I am going to second the theory that it was a lunch bite gone wild. That it sprouted just shows that compost happens! Keep tabs on the plant to see if it survives, but after being outed publicly everyone will be after that first tomato.

Too bad that’s pigweed not basil growing next to it. We could eat caprese on the go!

I agree—I think this plant came from someone’s discarded lunch. My heirloom tomato reseeded itself this year! I couldn’t believe it :)
