Stop and smell the @#*! roses!

We gardeners tend to be a hardworking bunch. We dig in. We get ‘er done. But sometimes we forget to stop working — and smell the phlox, the lavender, the lilies and, yes, the roses.

I’m trying to get better about it. Some nights when I get home from work, I’ll spend an hour or so just walking through the garden, just checking things out. I’ll do a little watering, a little weeding. Then I’ll get a drink (my current fave is tonic with a lime but without the gin) and sit down with the newspaper, maybe a book. And I do start to read. But then I’ll look up and see a weed — a weed! where I just weeded! — and the next thing I know, I’m back in the garden working away.

We’re at the peak of the season for most gardens. Even my garden looks pretty darn good. (Especially if I ignore the hail-ravaged, insect-nibbled leaves.) So how in the heck do I make myself just enjoy it without working in it? How do you make yourself stop and smell the @#*! roses?

I would just let that weed stay there until the next day. I have been trying hard just to sit and stay seated.

Just stay seated of a minute and let that weed wait til the next day.

Connie, I do the same thing in my gardens — except I’m out in the morning with a cup of coffee. (It’s amazing how quickly an hour goes by when you’re doing a “quick” water ‘n’ weed.) I did smell the roses this morning, but find it difficult to just sit and enjoy. So, I’m eager to hear how others manage it!

Get a garden hose with the adjustable sprays; set it for a long-distance setting and sit in a lawn chair with a cocktail. This way I can water, relax, enjoy the view and sometimes throw a ball for the dog at the same time.

After work, I grab a bottle of beer and walk in the garden, sipping as I go. I do pick the veggies for that nights meal, but that is usually the most work I do. My garden is flowers and veggies together, so I do stop and look at the flowers. And smell them.

Oh, this is a tough one! I tend to be a perfectionist, and so I always feel like my garden is not good enough - not productive enough, weeded enough, organized enough, etc, etc. I do smell the flowers, and walk around checking on everything right when I get home from work, but it’s not really relaxing - enough. Maybe I should try that cocktail, watering trick - that sounds pretty good.

In fact, that sounds pretty good right now!

I do the watering when I get home (I cannot get out of bed any earlier than I do now) and adopt the attitude on weeds that “today is not your day”. I weed/mulch a certain section and usually one or two days does not amount to that much growth. If you give me a book it does not matter if I have Jacks magic beans I am engrossed in a good story, to heck with all the weeds today.
