It’s hard to believe that sometime next month, a cooler-than-usual breeze will blow in the smell of fall. People will stop talking about being at the beach and start talking about different things you can make with squash and pumpkins. Just as soon as stores clear out the back-to-school notebooks, you know the candy corn and cutesy goblins are going to line the shelves. I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’m driving with one foot on the gas and one on the brake, at least, garden-wise.
My tomatoes are just ripening now. But I know I need to get my fall lettuce and spinach planted before it’s too late. I just pulled onions yesterday, but I know if I don’t get my garlic ordered, all my usual suppliers will be out soon. My apples aren’t anywhere near ripe, but I know I need to get in gear and put together that cider press that’s been sitting in pieces in my basement. It feels like it’s finally summer, but it is also the time to plan for fall.
Do you have fall chores that are about to come knocking on your door? Will you answer or turn away in an sneer of denial and disgust? What do you still want to get done this summer? What parts of fall do you look forward to? Any you dread?
Fall says cooler temps. I has been a hot one. Then I will be able to work in the garden.
After helping with everyone else’s garden projects, there has been little time to do my own. I need to complete my raised strawberry bed, mulch the perennial bed in front of the husband’s shop (6×50), and install a two-block high wall around the perimeter of the dog kennel (6×30) to keep it from washing away. With any luck, all will be completed BEFORE the snow flies…
I really look forward to the cooler weather. I’ll be cleaning out all the weeds I didn’t get when it was so hot, spreading the wood chips on paths, dividing some irises, and generally making it all look neater.
Replanting all the peonies, digging a water garden, mulching the stuff for the winter….All jobs done better in the fall but by then I am pooped from finding homes for tomato overabundance, and thanking heaven I did not plant zuchinni.
I’d like to take advantage of some of the shrub and perrenial sales, but am wary of planting in the fall. Has anyone had success with fall plantings (except peonies) and with what specias?
Besides that, I know I have some bulbs coming and that will be a job in itsels.
A sure sign of late summer/fall is when I think about getting out my canning pot and putting up some jams or relishes. Also, I am filling in with new perennials where things look …um, less than lovely. Today I bought 24 perennial groundcovers for $10.
Wow! You all have great fall plans! You make me want it to be fall, now. Anyone want to tell where they are getting end-of-the-season sale treasures?
