YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

Save time this weekend for your mother — and some killer Mother’s Day weekend plant sales.
Celebrating it’s 20th anniversary, The Friends School puts on the biggest fundraising plant sale in Minnesota. From heirloom tomatoes to rare woodland natives, this sale has something for everyone. Over 1,700 varieties of plants were offered for sale on last year. (I found some great rattlesnake master and prairie smoke.) This year’s selection looks even better.
The sale is held in the State Fair’s Grandstand Building and it gets really crowded really quickly. Shopping this sale is a bit of an art. Arrive early with your own wagon and a lot of patience.
Across town, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is having its 41st annual Mother’s Day plant sale. It’s just as crazy busy as the Friends School, but the plant selection is totally different. The Arboretum offers a huge variety of shrubs, trees and interesting University of Minnesota introductions. There is also a huge offering of hosta, HUGE.
Rose growers get there early. Hardy Minnesota roses and roses grown on their own rootstock, including Old Garden Roses (roses that were in existence prior to 1867) could go fast.
Will the Arboretum still charge its gate admission fees for the plant sale?
Good question!
Yes, the gate fees apply for the sale.
Check around to see if any of your friends are members with Friends & Family passes. Going with a friend can make it even more fun.
