This is it!

It’s the weekend. It’s been pretty warm. And we’re nearing our average last frost date (usually May 15th in the Twin Cities).

I’m going for it: I’m planting.

I’ve been good at holding myself back all spring, but now I’m letting loose. I’ve raked out all the old mulch, pruned what I could and aerated the lawn. Now I’m ready to really truly garden.

I’m not going to press my luck and plant tomatoes or peppers or any of those easily discouraged, warm-weather lovers. (I’ll probably wait a couple weeks to get those in.) But I am planting this weekend. And I can’t wait.

I went to a few garden centers last night to avoid the crush this weekend. (Remember, Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year at the garden centers.) And I did a little too good of a job filling my carts. (I told myself I was just going to get a few things. Ha.) I’ve got plants and seeds waiting.

This weekend, nothing is going to stand between me and my garden. Not even rain. Oh, I know, it’s not supposed to be good to work in the dirt when it’s wet, but I don’t want to wait.

I’m digging in! Who’s going to join me?

I’ll be joining you! I’ll be going platn shopping early Saturday and then hopefully planting right after that. I looked at the 15-day forecast (I know, it’ll be so accurate!) and it doesn’t look like there’s a chance of freezing coming up, so I’m going to take the chance and plant everything. Of course, if I’m on here in two weeks complaining that my tomato and broccoli plants are dead, ya’ll can yell at me for being too eager. :)

I’m in. Though I might be too tired after buying everything in sight at the Friends sale and Arboretum sale.

I’m in. I need to find hotcaps and then it will be time to stick in all the future bountiful harvest. I plan to leave some room for a few more tomatoes that I will find next weekend at the Dowling Garden sale and I can then concentrate on letting the food grow.

I’m in. I always plant my tomatoes mother’s day weekend. Guess I’ve been lucky because I’ve never had a problem. I also took a chance and put my cukes in this week because they were outgrowing their little pots on top of my fridge.

So Saturday we’re planting tomatoes, beans, our “3 sisters” mini-guilds, and another row of parsnips/radishes.

I’m in! The onions are 6″ tall, and the potatoes are leafed up and out of the ground, so it must be time. The veggie seeds can go in the ground, and time to harden off the tomatoes and peppers now for a week or so before they can be planted, too.

As always, looking forward to digging in the dirt! Rock on!

I’m still holding back on tomates and cucs. My tomatoes are still only a couple 3 inches tall. Boo-hoo.
It’s a little late to be planting spinach and leaf lettuces, but, hey, I’ve been busy, so in they go this weekend. Sure hope they like it . ..

My tomatoes have been outside in large containers on casters for 3 wks. (I wheel them next to the house under the eaves when it’s cold at night). Ditto jalapenos, cayenne and zucchini plants. Lucky so far: several blossoms already opening on the Early Girls.
Bought various flowers for planters today; they go in tomorrow or Sunday.
Have fun everyone!

I bought a ton of stuff at the Freinds Sale today. I’ll be planting a good chunk of it this weekend. Also I think I will plant the seeds of a few things like beans.

My tomatoes are so big, they’re outgrowing their containers! (one is already 2 ft tall!) Although it looks like any frost is out of the forecast, I’ll probably plant half this weekend and half later just to play the odds. I’m definitly getting everything else going, though. I still have to put the wire fence up to keep the rabbits out and get my bean structures together, but it should be a very productive weekend (regardless of any rain!)

Wow! Everybody’s so on the ball! I just started hardening off my seedlings two days ago, so won’t plant until next weekend. Anyway, I have both days dedicated to Mother’s Day events, so don’t hav emuch time to garden right now anyway….

And I need to call SSE and ask where the heck my seed potatoes are. If kiwi’s are out of the ground, they’re late!

I even found a plant at Kowalski’s tonight that I could not refuse. Freesia. Anyone know in our climate, it must be considered an annual at best? Is it worth it for me to pull it and save the bulbs once it’s done flowering? I see in some climates it’s considered invasive. I could only dream about living in such a warm climate.

I jumped the gun and started on Wednesday. Sort of.
On the way out to the garden, I was carrying a mixed tray of broccoli and tomato seedlings - attempting to be very careful. Unfortunately, a large tree root jumped up and tripped me and the entire tray went flying. All of my little babies were snapped and destroyed but two. And of those two, I can’t tell if they are a broccoli or a roma tomato. Ugh. Not off to a good start.

I’m definitely planting this weekend. I will also hold off on the warm weather lovers but will be planting a bunch of bulbs (that probably should have gone in a little while ago), some flower seeds, another row of carrots and radishes and some items I got at the Friends sale yesterday. We already have lettuce, mesclun, peas, radishes, carrots, potatoes, shallots, garlics, onions growing. Woo! This is our first garden too, I am excited.

My tomatoes were so happy to get out of the containers and into the ground on Thursday. I hope they stay that way. Next year, maybe I’ll start seeds a little later … probably not.

the cold and little or no rain for the past two weeks has got my gardening bug killed. I have no desire to plant, knowing that with this weather, I will have to spend my time watering. Sigh.

Moppysocks, lol, that’s an awful story, I’m so sorry that happened to you! Only a gardener would understand the sinking feeling of disappointment you must have felt.

I’ve got my peas, lettuce, onions and potatoes in, can’t wait to plant the rest this coming weekend! Going to my mother’s this weekend….

I’ve got four veg containers up and running (beets and climbing peas and beans) and this weekend I put together one container of annuals.

My veg beds turned into temporary holding beds for perennials in the fall. That doesn’t sound too bad, but it was the fall of 2007. I’m hoping to get my veg beds ready for planting by Memorial Day weekend.

I have peas, lettuce, carrots, onions, beans, and watermelons in. I’m waiting until the next weekend or so for my tomatoes and peppers. I need to get going on building the tomato cages and rabbit fence.
