Greengirls plant swap a bloomin’ success

Thanks to all who showed up Saturday morning at the Greengirls plant swap. With more than 135 in attendance it was an unqualified success — depite the nippy weather. (Is it supposed to be 40 degrees in the middle of May?)

You can see a photo here
. Thanks Peter!

In our makeshift marketplace in the park across from the Star Tribune, hundreds of plants changed hands — from miniature dicentra to Solomon’s seal to meadow rue to ornmental grasses (miscanthus, calamagrostis, panicum). Of course, there were plenty of lily of the valley, daylilies and phlox. To my amazement every single plant found a happy home. Minnesota gardeners, you did yourselves proud.

Thanks to all to showed up for the swap. Special thanks to fellow Greengirls, Jaime and Robyn and Home +Garden staffers Martha Buns, Paulette Henderson and Rhonda Prast. Peter Hoh (who runs the Growing Things blog) also lent a hand.

We’re planning to have another plant swap next spring, so start thinking about divinding those plants!

Any chance of a bulb swap in the fall for bulbs that should be divided and planted then for spring?

It was a fun morning. I was glad to see my hostas find homes along with the columbine. I have a lot of work ahead of me lter today getting all my trades planted.

It was so wonderful to see so many folks, and so many plants. There’s something just a little bit magic about sharing something you have plenty of, and getting stuff you wanted. Thanks for the pic, Peter! And special thanks to Connie for organizing everything!

This was great fun! Thank you to everyone who swapped plants this morning! I’m excited to get my new things in the ground and happy that my hosta, ferns, and iris found new homes.

Robyn, I found the Albert Holden lilac (at Dundee). Hooray! Did you see the chicken at Tangletown?!

THANKKKKK YOOOOOUUUUU. Why? Because I was able to get rid of most of my tomatoes and peppers! Sure, I’m currently looking at two dozen more I didn’t bring (I really didn’t think I could get rid of even half of what I did bring) but that’s what coworkers are for.

I really hope you do this again next spring!

Glad to hear it went well. Wish I could have participated! I will have lots of hosta & ostrich ferns for trade next year…
