Greetings from high above the field at Ohio Stadium. And when I say high, I mean it. The press box here is huge. But it’s so high that, in my advancing years, I have a hard time spotting uniform numbers from here. Sure am glad I brought my binoculars.

Chip Scoggins, the man whose huge shoes I’m trying to fill covering the Gophers, told me that there isn’t a better atmosphere for a Big Ten game than the one here.

Already, two hours before game time, I can see why. Upwards of 100,000 folks are going to be jammed in here. The way it’s built, the fans are right on top of the field.

The fans are streaming in here from everywhere, a sea of red. And I’m getting the impression that there isn’t a lot of concern about today’s game. As Patrick Reusse and I were walking towards the press gate we heard a fellow trying to sell seat cushions. ”Welcome to today’s game with the Gophers from…,” Then he stopped and asked the fellow beside him, ”What is it, the University of Minnesota?”
  Then he continued: ”Welcome to the game against the University of Minnesota, from St. Paul…..

Maybe the very, very young and inexperienced Gophers are finally ready for prime time and become a respected opponent to the likes of OSU. Our record against the top tier has been putrid for a long, long time.

My gut is we aren’t ready. Check with me next year at this time.
