Happy Halloween

Good day.

Hey, I want to give you some stuff I wasn’t able to fit into the paper from interviews from this week.

This week quarterback Adam Weber talked about last season’s Northwestern game, that 49-48 overtime thriller down in Illinois.
Talking to Weber this week, I got the feeling that the loss to the Wildcats was the most difficult one to take, the hardest of the 11 losses the Gophers suffered last year.
”It was a microcosm of what last year was about,” Weber said. ”After a great first half, in the second half everything bad that could happen to us happened. It was one of those things where the ball seemed to roll their way. They went out and won it, but we did everything we could not to win that game.”
As a result, I think the Gophers will be very up for this game.
Remember that game? The Wildcats turned two Weber interceptions and a missed field goal into second-half touchdowns while rallying to tie the game and sent it into overtime.
A lot of things have changed since then. Weber has thrown just three picks this season, two in Big Ten play. It’s the Gophers defense that is taking the ball away this season.
Now, there is an opportunity for Weber and his teammates to shrug off the bad memory of that game.
It’s one of those things where….Last year’s game was very very painful,” Weber said. ”It hurt a lot. It was one of those emotional games where, afterward, it was like, ‘What can we do?’ The frustration was at its highest level that game. You see it on the Big Ten Network — they keep playing the last few seconds on a commercial — and it’s like, ‘Come on.’ But it’s motivation for this season, for this game.”
The game ended when the Gophers, on the road, tried for a two-point conversion and failed.
Â
Think Weber will be up for this game?

Thanks for another fine update, Kent!

I was at the Northwestern game last year. Heck, I’m fired up to get another chance at this team! Imagine how the players feel.

GO GOPHERS!!!!

Yes, I too was at that game as well. I would have enjoyed hearing your comments about how Brewster had taught the guys to blow a big lead. Fortunately, we have not had a big lead since.

Hmmm, 42-17….. 37-3….. It’s just to easy some days.

Unfortunately the players already knew how to blow big leads from the previous coaching regime. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.

I would guess no football player in America will be more ready to play Saturday than Weber.

Northwestern was one of the two toughest losses of a miserable season (NDSU at home was worse) and Weber was horrible in the 4th quarter with two awful passes for interceptions leading to TDs.

Brewster has a lot to atone for too because his call to put the ball in a wounded, deflated Weber’s hands for the two-point play to win was stupid. At that point the defense was our stronger unit and we should have kicked for a tie and put the game in the hands of the defense.

Fortunately for Gopher fans both Weber and Brewster are much better at their respective positions today.

DAC–you bring up the name Pittman. I wonder if he was a QB at a JC for good reason. Maybe he really isn’t a WR/RB playmaker type of guy. Does he take any pregame snaps?? Have you or anyone else seen him throw a ball?? How does he look as a QB based on limited info?? He has been a complete mystery to date in my mind.

Derek says:
Torn hamstring, whats not to know? Nasty injury. We should see alot more of Pittman next year.

Derek: the guy wouldn’t be out fielding punts with a torn hamstring. A hamstring is healed or not. It is not like a sprained ankle that you can play through sometimes. He would not be on the field with a hamstring that is 75% healed.

Tex … You make a valid point about Pittman fielding punts but … have you noticed he’s never run one back? All fair catches.

Loon:

The players were well versed in the art of blowing big leads. They were taught by a master. That was so much part of the culture that Brewster didn’t need to bother teaching that one.

However, he has seemed to do a pretty good job of teaching them how to win close games and not making huge mistakes that end up costing the game.

Bisker says:

Loon, what are you smoking? Derek was not stating that we were worried about blowing any leads. He was just pointing out your false staement about not having big leads since the NU loss. Do yourself a favor and put the pipe down.

P.S. Please change you blog name, your idiocy disrespects our state bird.

==============================
Straight from the Sidster:

The University of Minnesota has spent $400,000 for 43 billboards and signs advertising the new stadium and the football program. Even so, attendance at the Northwestern game could be fewer than 50,000. The Nov. 8 Michigan game has 44,000 tickets sold. The Iowa game on Nov. 22 could sell out if both the Gophers and Hawkeyes continue to win. And even though the Gophers are 7-1, student attendance is down 25 percent.

Only 44k for Michigan? IA “could” sell out?? Student attendance down 25%??? The punky schtick is getting old to the rational…….

Go4 Fan says:

October 31st, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Recruiting represents rational people?? Now I have heard it all.

I’m sure the attendance is directly related to people tiring of Brewster’s “schtick”.

I know I’m tired of a 7-1 record. How I long for something more desirable such as 5-3, or 4-4.

I’m sure the current economic climate or the fact that the game will be on tv for free will have nothing to do with attendance.

You are a complete coward and a two faced little ninny. If it is so terrible why do follow this program? Please answer that question.

Go4 Fan says:

October 31st, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Oh jeez — here we go again.

Loon’s favorite argument that Brewster is cheater. Wanna know why its favorite argument is because you can’t argue against it. You can’t prove a negative.

Negative proof, the fallacy of appealing to lack of proof of the negative, is a logical fallacy of the following form:

“X is true because there is no proof that X is false.”

It is asserted that a proposition is true, only because it has not been proven false.

i.e. “Brewster must cheat because none of you can prove that he doesn’t”

Go4 Fan says:

October 31st, 2008 at 5:27 pm

I wonder how the players that Loon “supports” would feel about him dragging their coaches name through the mud with no proof.

What does that say about their character that they play for a school that cheats and follow a coach that cheats.

Only thing worse then a cheater is a coward. Wonder what that makes Loon?? He preaches about all his great morals and ethics out one side of his mouth, and continues to cover up facts with the other side.

“Slander is the revenge of a coward, and dissimulation his defense”

wrenagain2 says:

Go4 Fan: how did all the players who played for Mason feel when he was trashed? How about Wacker’s players? How do you think the felt about what the fans said about their coach? How about Gutey? How about Salem? How about Stoll? How do you think Murray’s players felt when they trashed Murray before he won the NC? After he had won the NC? After he had won that last Big Ten Title in 1967 and then they started trashing that great coach? How about Bieman? Terrible things were uttered about all of these coaches. What was your stand on Coach Mason? Did you contribute to his players feeling badly because of what you said, inferred or insinuated?

There has been more than enough cheating taking place in the Athletic Department…under haskins…muss…you recall the drill? I don’t EVER want to see ANY cheating of ANY kind happen in ANY sport at the University of Minnesota again.

So, I care about the honesty of the programs. I worry about that. I worry about all the problems the recruiting thing can create. I want significant numbers of Big Ten wins. I want ever increasing numbers of Gopher Football Players to graduate. I want the football program to always be completely honest and above board. Those are the things that really do matter to me.

But how do you suppose all of those players over all of those decades felt about things said about their coaches? Seems like there have been a lot of people trashing coaches for a long time.

People … Let’s be fair here.

Whyne Wrenbawl has a good point. It is undeniable that a few people meeting over coffee and in their backyards were critical of Joe Salem, Gutey, and Bernie Bierman. Gee, you should have heard the vitriol when they chased out poor George Peebles in 1883.

So it is the perfectly logical and honorable thing in this day of internet postings to use inuendo to smear, slime, and slander the current coach with his 7-1 record.

Thanks for helping us understand that, Wrenbawlbabbler.

Wren:

Criticizing a coaches coaching skills, recruiting, etc. is one thing. Insinuating that he is a cheater, a liar and that his program is a fraud is completely another.

It also insinuates that the players are accessories in the crime and indirectly questions their integrity as well.

I’ll await your diatribe, I’m having trouble sleeping tonight, that should do the trick to knock me out.

wrenagain2 says:

Mason was a bum. Nothing hurts…nothing EVER hurts you tnelsony fool… :0) This brewster is a 8-12 overall, 3-9 Big Ten lifetime record based on an easy schedule and this is about as good as it will ever get with this brewster. Tomorrow should get him to a high water mark of 9-12 overall and 4-9 Big Ten. From that point in time we shall see what we shall see. It would be a darn shame for this brewster and his high priced assistants to roll into the crapper with three trophy games remaining. I’m kind of thinking that this brewster isn’t up to the task after the cupcake win against NU on Saturday. Weber might save him, I hope, but, I don’t know if this brewster is up to the task of going into madison, hosting a pathetic Michigan team and hosting a pathetic iowa team that may be improving in the latter stages of the Big Ten schedule.

I picked this breswter to go 7-5 regular seson. I have upped my pick to 8-4 after Nu lost their qb, linebacker and rb. I can only hope for the best against wisky, Michigan and iowa.

My worst fear is that this brewster will blow both border battles and the JUG game to start a 3 game Big Ten losing string. In 2009, the team might be better and more experienced but the schedule doesn’t set up very well for wins. There are several danger points…This brewster could handle Air Force and then the next week California might cause some real problems Then it’s on to Evanston (Lost the last time there) at home to wisky, at home to Purdue then at PSU and at OSU, then entertain MSU and then Illinois (an all zooked up team) entertain South Dakota State and end at iowa.

OUCH…the record could suffer even if the team is better.

It is very possible that the high water mark for both ove3rall games and Big Ten games could be reached on November 1, 2008! Don’t miss that game. Be there. The part of the schedule set up for wins will be completed tomorrow. I hope that the Michigan game won’t turn out to be another 2003 vintage game. I hope the game at madison won’t be another slaughterhousing in madtown (sounds like a Halloween horror flick). I can’t imagine that it possibly could as poorly as wisky has been playing this year. The iowa game will be the make or break game for this season or longer…

Hurts huh?

wrenagain2 says:

Backstabbing a coach? Nonsense. WHO has time for coaches. The game is ALL about the players. You people who have always mobbed and backstabbed coaches such as “Mase” and Wacker and Gutey and Salem and Stoll and Warmath and Bierman are the backstabbers. With a crook like hoax…it is kosher to frontstab though! Why goldohfour: you saw what this tnelsony was trying to do…so I was merely mocking tnelsony. Hurts huh?????

I always hope for the sake of the student athletes that the Gophers can win EVERY game that they play. However with you and people of your ilk attempting to annoint this brewster as some “immaculate recruiter…” it is always best to remind you not to take this stuff so seriously and promptly shove your crap right back in your faces. You people who want everyone to genuflect to this brewster and do a loyalty oath expressing total loyalty to this brewster and calling for a “this brewster nation” most certainly NEED to be contrasted. You have mob-mentality. I merely contrast you people.

The little gunslingers and dirty tricks people from gi and gh need to have shoved back at them what they shove at others. It is a matter of balance, plain and simple.

Go ahead, gold oh four, take a good honest look at this zookster’s overall record at Illinois to date. It looks as though many more Saturdays than not, the zookster has been getting crushed on GAME DAYS. You can’t argue with the numbers. He has already had his season in which the schedule set up for wins. Now, it is back to school for him, it certainly appears. Sometimes the schedule just does NOT set up for wins. Ain’t life a bear for that old zookster?
