Officials within the Univ of Tenn Athletic Dept really like Tim Brewster. They liken him to the hiring of Bruce Pearl a few years ago, who brought Tenn basketball program back from the dead.

I hope this UT coaching vacancy gets filled fast. I still contend that Brewster would not go if offered. The only reason would be for money and he does not impress me as the kind of guy that would follow a money trail.

Vote would have to go to JoePa, although Brewster is deserving. If Penn State makes it to the BCS Championship game JoePa would be my pick.

My vote right now goes to OSU’s Gundy. If they knock off TT this weekend, for sure he’s it.

My vote would go to Mike Leach. What he has done with Texas Tech’s program is phenomenal.

Brew to Tennessee would be one of the seriously great con jobs in the history of the planet.

I actually think the Texas Tech coach has done one hell of a job as has TCU’s Patterson.

Brewster has obviously had a nice little season but if he loses 3 of his last four and ends up 8-4, not that impressive as if he win’s out to go 10-2. If he goes 10-2 from 1-11 then he should be in the running at the end.

Bisker says:

C.J.

I agree. 10-2 would go a long way to pad his credentials, however, if TT maintains it ’s momentum, Mike Leach would probably be the favorite. I hope like hell that Saban seriously doesn’t get consideration. Character & integrity should have something to do with it.

Sweet! Go Coach Brew! Go gophs!!
He definitely deserves some recognition.

Brewster is worthy of some consideration, though if Alabama is better than .500 these last weeks you have to say Saban is a lock. If they win it all, it’s a plain no brianer.

Mike Leach is the winner of this award after beating the Longhorns. Tim Brewster has done an absolutely terrific job turning a pathetic defense into one the best in the big 10, the Gophers went for the W against Northwestern and I am totally convinced we will take the Little Brown Jug and beat the Wolverines by 10 this weekend. The best test of the Gophers progress this year will be in Madison next week where they will have to prove they can win a big road rivalry game and get Paul Bunyan’s axe back in MN. Now that would be a season changing win and lock up a New Year’s Bowl game.

I’m a Gopher fan living in Knoxville… there is talk of Tim Brewster being in the mix to replace Phil Fulmer.
But, they’re also talking about Bill Cowher, John Gruden, and Mike Leach. While the UT job is a great job in college football, is it that big of a step-up over Minnesota, with a brand new stadium, and a legitimate shot at winning 9-11 games next year?

Bill Brasky says:

November 5th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Brewster for COY?? Who have they beat? Yes, 7-2 is a decent record but who have they beat? Illinois is 5-4. Big deal. Indiana and Purdue are awful. Their nno-conference schedule was a joke. Again, eho have they beat and what has Brewster done to deserve this honor? They got smoked by the onky ranked team they’ve played thus far (OSU) and last week they lost at home to a team missing their starting QB, starting RB, and starting DT. Again, what has Brewster done to deserve COY?

scho0127 says:

November 5th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Bill, ID schedule to last year, opposite results. That is what COY is asking. And as said earlier, depends on the last 3 games. Blow them all? No chance. Run the table? Its his. But as BJ said, I’d vote for Rich. Couldn’t have happened to a better school.

Yes, this brewster threw away his season in 2007 and now he has some wins over horrible teams. Yes, by all means, make him the coach of the year!

Here is some advice to this brewster: IF this tennessee contact has ANY clout it is foolish not to take advantage of him right now. Now is the time for this brewster to strike! Let’s face it, if he looses his final three games this seson, his goose is already cooked. This brewster should play this to the hilt. He can eat this maturi and this prexy b alive if he only gets his pals at the volunteer school to play along, he can get a nice five year extension form the prexer and his little pal. This prexy b and maturi are big on five year contract extensions…NICE contract security for way longer than what his current contract has remaining. That way, if the shcedule is a lot tougher in 2009 and it is a 4-8 or 5-7 season, this prexter and this ad will have nailed themselves to the wall. They will then be stuck for much bigger bucks for a very long time…OR…will have to borrow millions from the general fund of the U of M to buy out another extended contract. Sounds like something this prexy b might get himself into…

Otherwise, this brewster will have missed his big chance. Bayfield tells us that this prexy b is serious about contending for championships in football, so, if this brewster doesn’t get it done within the first three or four years, his situation will be shakey at best. prexy b thinks he can fire his way to contending for a championship right after he first tries to extend his way to a championship.

It would be so darn funny to watch this whole thing unfold!

ANSWER the phone….THAT’S what this brewster has to say he is doing! Start humming Rockey Top a lot around the practice facility. A few extra years on your contract could be worth millions and millions of dollars as a gift from this prexy b and the University of Minnesota General Fund!

COY: now THAT is interesting. This brewster really needs to GO for it!

Brewster has a soul, and will not bail yet. 4-5 yrs. down the line maybe. He is being paid fairly and is a big ten guy. ans here are more reasonable than in Tenn. He is no fool.

TC says:

November 5th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

The people down in SEC country think that the football world revolves around their teams. Therefore, if Tennessee wants Brewster, he won’t be able to resist the lure of coaching a team in a conference where they play “real football”. What a joke. Brewster is not Lou Hoax. He’s not going anywhere. He’s got a good situation here with low expectations. He will stay in Minnesota and he will be a long-term winner here. Go Brewster!

I find it more than curious to read about Eric Decker playing through pain….and playing a week after he was knocked unconscious, which ANY doctor will tell you is flat out life threatening….on the same page as Brewster being mentioned as coach of the year. I am SO glad my son decided to play somewhere where the trainers and doctors rule over the coaches, (and football players actually graduate!)

I FIND IT FUNNY HE NEEDS TO CRY TO THE MEDIA WHEN HE GETS BACK WHAT HE DISHES OUT. MAYBE HE IS SETTING HIMSELF UP TO SIT OUT HIS GAME AT CAMP RANDLE SINCE THE BADGERS HAVE SOME NICE PAYBACK PLANNED FOR HIM!

Buck up badger buckaroo. It is obvious that the badgers had not been focused on football. They have been getting their collective butts handed to them on any given game day Saturday. This bulemic coach of the unfocused and poorly disciplined has done an incredibly poor job this year and if he doesn’t get back inside his players heads they will have completed one of the most incredible negative turn arounds in the Big Ten for a very long time. Perhapps they are cheap shotting other teams but, they haven’t been beating many teams. You need move along now mouth.

Susie has a point. It is too bad that Division I football extracts so much in the way of health and stresses so little in terms of emphasizing education before all else.
Division III college football IS college football as it should be conducted. It would not be the money maker to pay for title IX and non revenue sports, but, it would be conducted the way the NCAA claims they want college sports conducted.

This prexy b at the U of M and every other Big Ten prexy should strive to make college football a less financially rewarding revenue producer and should strive on demanding that their college football player’s health is placed above all else and on an equal level as the stress placed upon EDUCATING and GRADUATING their student athletes who participate in football, men’s basketball and hockey.

It would mean telling the tv programmers that they care MORE about their student athletes than they do the checks that the advertisers are willing to pay to televise the games. It would mean that hopefully the Football Program would break even based entirely on their ticket revenue. It would mean not expecting the Football Program to pay for Title IX sports OR non-revenue sports.

It would mean that college football coaches would NOT be paid any more than, and in many casses LESS than other academic professors on campus. There would NOT be money for big pay increases OR expensive buyouts for college football coaches.

The coaches DO need to be put in their places and this MUST be enforced by the University prexy and his little buddy, the ad. NOTHING should cme above the well-being physically, mentally, emotionally and educationally of the student athlete…the college football player.

By not worrying so much about letting tv dicate so much about the college football season, it would automatically HELP get rid of the book makers and the gamblers who are always on the fringe areas of college football and college men’s basketball programs, conferences and “Prime time” talking heads and comentators.

Let the nfl be full of the gamblers and other assorted scum bags and tv network and cable deals.

Make any college football fan who wants to see the game live travel to the game and actually buy a ticket.

I really do think susie makes some great points. Division I football has gone too far to be too much like the nfl.

Personally, I think the huge scoreboard is going to be a bit too much in the new stadium. At Notre Dame, when they redid their stadium, they kept it the way it traditionally was. There is something pretty darn nice about. The huge speakers and the huge viewing surface is a cheap attempt to make the GAME DAY experience too electronic and too phony. There hould only be band music and a public address person could announce partial scores and final scores during game stoppage settings…the way it used to be. Why waste millions and million just to be able to have speakers louder than the “BOILER-UP” noise at Purdue or the lion screeching at PSU? Why make our beautiful new stadium a place to house some of the very worst aspects of the damn dome…you know he canned and blasted NOISE and heavy metal blasted in the damn dome for the past 27 years? “…welcome to the jungle…” should not be welcomed at TCF STADIUM.

Division I football has a LOT it could learn from Division III football in terms of keeping college football a college game that is there pretty much for the benefit of the college student…student athlete. I think that really the Division III players are getting a LOT purer experience in a LOT of ways that really do matter over the course of a lifetime. It really is too bad.

Start by lowering college coaches pay scales. Extend the coache’s salary down to what a tenured professor or department Chair earns. That would be a start. And value the student athlete’s health. Start valuing the student athlete’s education. EXPECT more! DEMAND more. Education and health come FIRST!
