A big weekend

Greetings.

Guess we’ll all have to put the golf clubs away now. But that’s OK. Things are starting to get interesting in the Big Ten.

The Gophers, at last glance, are more than a TD favorite over Michigan. Wonder when that happened last?

Anyway, here’s hoping snow doesn’t slow you folks down on your way to the dome tomorrow. It’s a big weekend, and I’m not just talking about the game. This is THE biggest recruiting visit day of the season. There will be a number of players in from all around the country, potential recruites joined by the likes of Sam Maresh, Spencer Reeves and MarQueis Gray.

Each of those three are eager to get at it. Maresh expects to play next year after heart surgery. Reeves didn’t qualify initially, but has gotten past the ACT hurdle and will enroll in January. Just talked with Gray, who is excited about coming to Minnesota. He expects good things from his latest ACT test, the results of which should be known within two weeks.

Those three will be helping encourage a number of visitors that Minnesota is the place to be. That group includes:

Bryant Adam, a 6-0 RB/DB from Maplewood (Missouri() Richmond Heights;

I hope the boys can put on a good show for them.

I know it is gimmicky, but everyone remember to wear Gold for the game.
Go Gophs!!

Kent also left a couple very important players off the list, dont know how he could miss these visitors, but here are three more:
Bryant Allen, a 5.7, high three star out of Maplewood, Missouri, an excellent football player, who plays DB and RB, and probably projects as a RB for the Gophers. Has some great video.

Seantrel Henderson, potentially the number one player in the country next year, and Brewsters #1 target since the day he was hired.

Also, to elaborate some more, Sheldon Richardson is the #5 ranked player in the entire counrty. He is a 6-4, 290 pound DE/TE, who runs a 4.69 forty. Some guys from GI who live in Missouri and have seen him play claim he is closer to 260, but either way he is the highest rated player to EVER visit campus, and he loves Coach Cross.
Also, Micheal Carter and Bryce McNeal are in the top 100, and all three of these guys have been selected for the Army All American game in Texas. Matt Garin is expected to committ if he likes the trip. Brewster has Spencer Reeves flying on the same flight and sitting next to Joey Searcy on the way up. How convenient to have Reeves in his ear three hours before he gets here. Nosa Eguae, a soft verbal to Colorado, is also expected to decide beforehe leaves the campus. And Hageman is down to Minnesota and Wisconsin, so a decision is looming there also. The Iowa weekend is also shaping up very nicely for visits, with four star Taylor Lewhan, whose father played for the Gophs, coming in, plus four star DB Jermaine Robinson, and three star teammate of committ Kellen Lewis, Demontre Hurst, coming to town. This weekend is HUGE guys, get out and support Gopher football. Later!!

I believe Kent that when you said Bryan Adam, you meant Bryant Allen, unless you are just a huge fan of the musician. You can call me anytime you need help getting these guys names correct. You’ve done a nice job with the blogs this year, but come on, the Strib is really embarrassing with some of the coverage of the football team, cant even get the frickin’ names right.

Time for the “Little Brown Jug” to come home! What a great experience it would be for the potential recruits to experience the history & traditon of what it means to play for one of these Big Ten trophies. Go Gophers, let’s make it happen!!

j … Thanks for the insight on what sane Gopher fans can call the best group of potential recruits to ever visit the U of M.

For Gopher haters like the slinking coward Bud, this group of exceptional athletes represents “table scraps”.

How dishonest can one man be to brand young men with this much talent as trash, garbage, junk bond status, or table scraps. Reprehensible.

david_allen_coe says:

November 7th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Guys … j is right. Sheldon Richardson is a 5-star on Rivals and the No. 5 high school player in America on Rivals. How incredible is that that this kid would visit Minnesota and watch our game with Michigan? And seriously consider playing for the Gophers?

But to someone like Bud, that is chump change and table scraps compared to what his buddy Mason used to do. According to Bud, Mason could look out and see five stars all the time when he was hosting recruits. He would just get three or four guys in the same car and then say, “See, there’s five stars.”

Hey Derek you get out of school early today? Nice to know we have a guy tripping that has verbaled to Missou. I guess we can go ahead and recount the guys that did not get into school last year in this star count also. Its a great accounting system. Double dipping just like the financial markets.

Table scraps is what I said. We are 41 right now in the recruiting rankings but it will take a little time for Brewsters man down in chicago to work the numbers to boost our class. And we will still not know how many of them will be enrolling in school in 2010. Yes I said 2010, given the last class and how many guys are still waiting to get here I figured about 5-7 would be about right.

lmao. Where are we 41st? Why don’t we talk about what schools offered these guys since that is far more important than star rankings. Or do you even know who half of the 15 guys are visiting this week? Oh wait I forgot Eskridge wasn’t offered by Nebraska and Carpenter was a plan B guy…..

Oh well, it is humorous seeing your continued ignorance.

Bud says:

November 7th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Did the bell ring and the teacher ask you to get back into line Derek? Work for you must mean adding 2 plus 2. I have some things figured out and when a guy is a 3 star but then gets moved to a 4 star based on Sr. film then we get moved up in the rankings. The only problem with Rivals is they do not figure academics into their rankings. We had a 4 plus star who cheated on his ACT, another one who has a cronic hamstring problem and a prep school WR that did not get into school. We had a JC DL from Miss. that did not get in and a LBer who had to keep taking the test until he got a score that matched his GPA because he could not bring his GPA up any higher. The great players with the grades have already made their minds up where they are going to go to school. The guys that are left for the most part have some work to do in the class room to get themselves ready for college. Thats what I mean by table scraps.

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but let’s break this down to the simplest terms.

We have a bunch of the best high school players in the country coming to town this weekend to see our Gophers play Michigan, check out the new stadium, etc., etc.

It’s imperative for the team and the fans to put their best foot forward so we can land a number of these young men to play for the Golden Gophers.

Never in my memory has recruitng generated so much interest in this program.

It’s awesome!

GO GOPHERS!!!

Mason: “Five and he wants to play here for me.”

Budbrain: “Gee, coach, you’re the greatest and I idolize you more and more every time you let me carry your bag.”

Mason: “Uh huhhh. And do you know why he is a 5-star recruit?”

Genius Budbrain: “Duhhhhhhhh, no coach, why?”

Mason: “Because he’s so big he can carry those other three guys standing there on his shoulders and if you add up all four of them they have five stars.”

We have a game to play against MICHIGAN and we are not playing the game so we can have a recruiting trip for a bunch of players who may or may not come to MN. How about focusing on the game and not worry about whether the newspaper covers who is coming to town on a recruiting trip.

Is it just me or since basketball and hockey started all of a sudden the articles on the U of M football team have been almost non-existent. Its a shame when a Poster named “J” writes the most interesting reading all week. I hawte to say the Milw. Journal has a couple of articles each day on the dreaded Badger football team. About the same as the GB Packers. The two papers up in the TC do not do a very good job. Since the U of M lost the Northwestern game, its like now there is nothing else to write about any more. Nuff said.

Tom says:

November 7th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

GREAT post J thanks! If we can get 4-5 verbals this weekend that would be HUGE. Also glad to hear about Gray and Reeves. maresh will make this defense much better if he can play. DL/OL and LB are the main needs as I see it. Another WR and CB would help too. Hageman would be a huge get at TE and the WR we got last week(i forget his name right now) was a big get also.

Bud says:

November 7th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

If you have ever been to the Univ. of Michigans football complex you would go through a very impressive hall of fame before you enter the coaches offices. The first thing you use to see was a count board that read 32 consecutive bowl games and the consecutive years with a winning season. They will have a constant reminder of what has happened this year. The only thing the Woverines have left is the jug. They lost the Paul Bunyan Trophy to MSU and the only thing remaining is the Little Brown Jug. I suspect that they will come to town and give us their best shot. We are good enough to beat Michigan but, if we can not run the ball, we will be in trouble. We do not want to give the Michigan offense too many chances at making a big play on us. They still have a chance to make a bad season better by keeping the Jug and beating OSU. We need to find a way to help the o-line out by not setting the luanch point for the QB at the same depth on every play. We also need to get some quick hitting run plays so that we can split their charging d-lineman. We are not good enough to sustain our blocks long enough to get the running back back to the LOS. We are good enough to win but it will take our best effort to date by the offense.

david_allen_coe says:

November 7th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

The Michigan defense has not been strong against the run. Purdue ran crazy on them.

This could be a matchup where our offensive line plays well and creates some running room.

Jimbo says:

November 7th, 2008 at 5:48 pm

I hope you’re right, d_a(sp)_c. I was very disappointed in the OL play last week. I thought they would have come out inspired, but instead they looked totally flat.

david_allen_coe says:

November 7th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Jumbo … Do not make the mistake of believing the people who said Northwestern should be an automatic win. The Reusse’s and Budbrainwrenbawlloonatics know nothing about football.

Northwestern is a good team with a very strong defensive front. Even though Michigan obviously has talent and a lot of returning starters, their defense has not — so far — played well.

They are also fearful the starting QB won’t play tomorrow. Of course, we went down that road last week.

david_allen_coe says:

November 7th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

I wonder which one of the new recruits will slap the little circus clown Budbrain silly tomorrow?

Last week it was Trey Simmons and Brandon Green. Before that it has been Brock, Lawrence several times, McKinley, Eskridge, Edwards, Stoudermire, Shady, Smith and on and on.

Budbrain said none of them could play football. He said none of them could get into the University. He said none of them would ever play for the Gophers. He said nobody else wanted any of them.

Budbrain is either a liar or stupid and my guess is nobody ever went broke betting either way.

Bud says:

November 7th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Get it right DAC if you are going to be the truth teller on this site. I have said that SS is not good enough and to date who is right on that one. I have never been one to worry about who gets into school and who does not. The rules are set and if they are in they are in, but if they are not then that is where the question lies. To date none of those players you have mentioned are house hold names. A play here and a play there. The heart and sole of this team is those players I mentioned the other day. Do you see a All Big Ten player in that bunch or a 2nd teamer. HM does not count because all you have to do is put them up for all conference and they make HM and we know how many of them will be put up. The All Big Ten players are Decker, Weber, Willie, maybe Brown or Small. Campbell could get 2nd team but not likly with all the good LBers. So tell me again about DE, he has won the job by default because of the injury to Bennett and after one game even your own head man had to give the starting job to DE after seeing SS abilities. We probably have the worst back in the Big Ten if you think about it. I could name you a back on every Big Ten team that was better than what we have. Think about that one the next time you start blaming the o-line.

david_allen_coe says:

November 7th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Bud … You are a disgusting, sick, and very, very miserable man to live your daily life stabbing young men in the back.

Weber, Decker, and Willie are not the heart and soul of the football team. They are our three best players. There is a difference.

The heart and soul of the football team is the 40 or so guys who play offense, defense, and special teams. And the handful of impact new players on defense are every bit as important to this team’s success as the handful of returning players on offense.

It is a team game where everyone must support the other. You wouldn’t know that because you are a cheap coward and fraud.

the Loon says:

It is perfectly rational that some perfectly decent human beings would not see getting all ‘ga ga’ over a bunch of 18 year old potential football players.

david_allen_coe says:

November 7th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

buffloon … Nobody here is going ‘ga ga’, as you put it, over any recruit. We are happy to have a higher quality of athlete coming to Minnesota than has been the case in the past.

What you, wrenbawlbaby, and Birdbrain are doing is deliberately trying to undermine the team, the players, and the coaches by tearing down every player associated with Brewster. In the process you are tearing down Weber, Decker, and VanDesteeg just as much as any Brewster recruit.

What you mindless Brewster haters do not understand is that this is a football team and they all stand together. You three stooges are not part of this football team. You have nothing to do with this football team. You are the enemy of this football team. You will be treated accordingly. There is no name any of you could be called that would not be appropriate.

Guys, I dont really care about all the in fighting on this board. The fact of the matter is, I usually post as jbh1977 on here, I have subscriptions to GI, scout, and some insider info from a member of the staff and I love giving you guys the inside info. Kent does a great job with the blogs, minus a few guys names, like Bryan Adam, who he actually meant as Bryant Allen. I know guys like Loon and now this tool Bud bother you, but ignore them. The fact of the matter is, Brewster is bringing a different kind of athlete on campus. Bud, the tool that he is, likes to point out that Sheldon is committed to Missouri, the truth is Sheldon committed last summer in June, and it is a SOFT, I repeat SOFT, verbal. With Pinkel looking at the Washington job, it is even less than soft. I knew he was visiting about a week ago, and kept it secret on GI, and his interest is very legit. He commented early tonight on his visit, that TCF stadium, is HIS HOUSE. He loves Tim Cross, and it is a real possibility that we land this young gentleman. This staff works above and beyond any staff in Gopher history. People like Loon, Bud, Recruiting and Wren, will never appreciate how this staff loves the Maroon and Gold, and works 24/7 to give the REAL fans something to get behind and cheer about. I have always loved my Gophers through thick and thin, and I’ll be damned if 40 years of apathy lessen my resolve. I love the Gophers, and no matter how many losing seasons we endure, it will just make the year we finally pull it off, that much sweeter. I will continue to give all the true Gopher fans on this blog updates on how THIS Gopher team is improving, and I hope it gives the TRUE Gopher fans on here some satisfaction knowing YOUR head coach and his staff are busting there asses everyday to bring you a quality product. Also, Marion Barber III, and Maroney are also expected in the house tomorrow, and Micheal Carter will be shown his Uncles glass encased jersey and lifetime locker at TCF tomorrow, fwiw. Go Gophers!!!!!!!!!

Anybody who understands football knows that you do not have a real team if a few players are your heart and soul. You must have 40 hearts and souls to play and another 50 on the sidelines to offer encouragement and show up for practice.

Minn’s weakening offense, less-than-desirable and competent kicker; Michigan’s improving O and especially running attack with Minor, their growing desire to win, and their mental state that have always believed they “own” the Gophers (especially in that dim lit and God-awful dome.

I hope I am wrong but. . .

No problem, I’ll keep the real fans updated on this blog through the weekend. I expect there will be several commitments this weekend, starting Sunday evening. From what I’ve heard straight from the horses mouth is Garin, Hageman and Eguae are simply waiting to see what its like in the locker room, and meet with players, and they are as good as gold. Also, Micheal Carter is a heavy lean, Miami and Georgia are slow playing him, plus he trains with his uncle all year, and its almost a guarantee he will also be Golden. Sheldon is loving his visit right now, and the recruiting machine that is Tim Cross, has really hit it off with this kid, he loves the staff, and early playing time is what he is looking for. Another Sheldon tidbit, he wants a staff that will stick with him, and who better to talk to him about sticking with a guy than Spencer Reeves, Sam Maresh and Marqueis Gray. Trust me, this staff when it come to recruiting, has all the bases covered. This weekend will be similar to the Ohio State game last year, when all but one recruit visiting committed. Everyone should be very excited, this class will be OUTSTANDING! Guaranteed!

They are experimenting with the 3-3-5, but Purdue put up 48 last week, so they may resort to the 4-3, which they have had little success with this season. We will have 55-60k. Gold out. A team that is hungry to prove last week was a joke. I look for an @ss whooping, and 85 guys sprinting across the field to take the Little Brown Jug back to its rightful owner.

I think that because of that nasty hole in your head, and the way you call others names all the time, it is time to simply call you d_a_c_hole. You d_a_c_holes are all alike. We never saw Gopher fans who were d_a_c=holes until this brewster came around. So, this brewster is responsible for the nasty name calling that you do around here d_a_c_hole.

By the way: this brewster reverted to the 2007 throw away season last week against NU. His team did not show up for the start of the game. In fact this brewster had the team flat, lethargic and totally unprepared for the beginning of the game against NU.

What a crime to have not beaten that NU team last Saturday. And, the way that this brewster lead his team straight to defeat the way he did was totally pathetic of him.

3-9 in Big Ten play…going into that game and this brewster forgot to wake his players up for the game…(OUCH…that hurt.) He took his script from the 2007 loss down at NU and personally led the Gophers to a loss at the end of the game…AGAIN. So, instead of standing some prosperity, this brewster prsonally led his team to a game ending interception that was returned from the mid-field area. This brewster took the loss single-handedly. As a result, this brewster took his Big Ten record to 3-10. I don’t like Big Ten losses. I especially don’t like Big Ten losses that didn’t HAVE to be Big Ten losses. What was the deal there? He didn’t have his team ready to play and in the end he forced his team into a loss.

You are just the same d_a_c-hole that you were before brewster took all the steps necessary to lose that game. In your case, once a d_a_c_hole, always a d_a_c_hole.

wrenagain2 says:

November 8th, 2008 at 1:12 am

Michigan has quit on this richrod. Minnesota will win 31 to 24 on Saturday. It will make the tragic loss to NU even more painful. That loss will haunt this brewster and his team before this season has condluded.

J, I really appreciate your efforts on this board. Keep it up. Like you, d_a(sp)_c, Rescooter, Tex, NYC, and a number of others, I bleed maroon and gold.

The bitter few who constantly find fault and make false accusations can continue to wallow in their misery and hatred. They are of no significance. They know that, therefore their bitterness.

I’m sitting here in my “gold gear” waiting for Mrs. Jimbo to get ready, so we can head down to the Victory Walk.

I’ve said this before, but those who know me know I love to repeat myself. I am more optimistic for the future of Golden Gopher football than I’ve been in over 40 years. I think they’re finally going down the right track.

Thanks to the team, to Tim Brewster, and his staff. Thanks to Joel Maturi for taking a chance on this guy. Thanks to Bob Bruininks and the administration for their support. Thanks to the REAL Gopher fans for supporting the team and the University.

GO GOPHERS!!!

Ditto, thanks J. Once you’ve been bitten by the Maroon and Gold you’re set for life. And thru thick and thin, will remain a fan.

So psyched for today. I can smell a win.

Go Gophers.

Let’s flash ahead to the year 2013, where Wren writes:

I think that because of that nasty hole in your head, and the way you call others names all the time, it is time to simply call you d_a_c_hole. You d_a_c_holes are all alike. We never saw Gopher fans who were d_a_c=holes until this brewster came around. So, this brewster is responsible for the nasty name calling that you do around here d_a_c_hole.
By the way: this brewster reverted to the 2007 throw away season last week against USC. His team did not show up for the start of the game. In fact this brewster had the team flat, lethargic and totally unprepared for the beginning of the game against USC.
What a crime to have not beaten that USC team on New Years Day by 140-0. And, the way that this brewster lead his team straight to mediocrity the way he did was totally pathetic of him.
32-16 in Big Ten play…going into that game and this brewster forgot to wake his players up for the game…(OUCH…that hurt.) He took his script from the 2007 loss down at NU and personally led the Gophers to a pathetic 63 – 3 win at the end of the game…AGAIN. So, instead of standing some prosperity, this brewster prsonally led his team to a 1st quarter interception that was returned to the mid-field area. This brewster took the 3 points single-handedly. As a result, this brewster took his Rose Bowl scoring totals to 153-6. I don’t like Rose Bowl points, I especially don’t like Rose Bowl points that didn’t HAVE to be Rose Bowl points. What was the deal there? He didn’t have his team ready to play and in the 1st Qtr forced his team into giving up 3 points.
You are just the same d_a_c-hole that you were before brewster took all the steps necessary to lose that game. In your case, once a d_a_c_hole, always a d_a_c_hole.

The worst Michigan team in half a century just kicked this brewster and dunbar’s butts. They didn’t have the team ready to go. Fire this dunbar NOW. His offense is NOT an offense that will work at Minnesota.

Where is the blocking? Where is the running attack? This dunbar has to go. And, this maturi had better not EVEN be thinking of extending this brewster. The Big Ten record is now 3-11. That is NOT good people. And the schedule in 2009 will not be as conducive to wins setting up on that schedule.

This dunbar must be sacrificed if this brewster means business about wanting to win. It is back to the drawing board on what kind of offense this brewster thinks he wants to run. The one he is running is not winning nearly enough Big Ten games.
