Tuesday thoughts

Brewster made a point to say that he didn’t think the Metrodome is a great place for a collegiate atmosphere, both in pre-game and during the game. He noted that this week’s game will probably come close to selling out — there were less than 1,000 tickets as of today — but that a lot of those folks would be Iowa fans. He wants to see a day when the stadium is full, but opposing fans only have a small section of fans near the end zone.

Interestingly enough, Brewster was a member of the Illinois team that played the Gophers in the first Big Ten Conference game in the Metrodome. It was 1982 the 19th-ranked Gophers were 3-0 entering their home conference opener. The Gophers led 24-20 entering the fourth quarter before losing 42-24 to an Illini team headed to the Rose Bowl. The Gophers didn’t win another home game until 1984.

Madison was a pretty sweet atmosphere last week. Hopefully with it being the last Gopher game at the dome there will be a good MN turnout.

I’ll be at the game and I’m dreading it. Hopefully they can pull it off. There’s nothing worse than 25,000 gloating pig farmers downtown after they win.

If its OK with the above posters, I will respond to Bob’s post and avoid the BS.

Fans from visiting teams don’t like the damn dome either. In Madison, I was approached by at least 20 Wisky fans who were inquiring about the stadium. Same thing, but to a lesser degree, last year at Kinnick. They probably don/t realize that a ticket to TCF could be problematic after being used to getting tickets at will.

People want to see Big Ten football played outdoors. Good or bad weather.

I went to one game in the Metrodome–and that was to sit around the perimeter with drunk Badger fans and listened to the garbled and echoing sounds. How anyone that remembers the sights and sound of the Memorial stadium could stand more than one game in that place is beyond me. Well–it won’t be that long until it has only one tenant. The best salute to the last game in the Metrodome would be NO SALUTE, no recognition, AT ALL. Please.

To JC: At least ther are 25000 fans that follow the Hawkeyes, that’s more than I can say for “Golden Rodent” fans…

Hey JC, hate to break this to you but anyone who has lived in “the Cities” knows that you go 5 miles out and there are nothing but “pig farmers” in MN too.

Regarding visitors to the Dome, for several years I bought single game tickets for the Big 10 part of the season. This meant that I was often seated at the border of the home Gopher fans with Iowa or Wisconsin. This meant I could engage in good-natured banter with the other guys.

On several occassions the visitors actually lamented our hoped for change back to an outdoor venue.

They liked the games at the Dome…indoors, no elements, beer, and the Big City to boot. They’d make a weekend of it with no certainty of foul weather.

Our gain is their loss…and I like it!

Go Gophers! Bring Floyd Home!

The Metrodome is the worst sports facility I have ever watched a game—regardless of the sport. Good riddance!!

The are two reasons the Golden Chokers made the new stadium as small as it is:
1. The Goofers have no serious following, and
2. Its the only way you could limit the great fans of other teams from getting in your face, which you obviously can’t tolerate.

Both reasons are lame and boring.

You will still be losers and chokers. You don’t do justice the color “Gold”.

Dream on.

Woodyboy … I personally have been at every Gopher home game at the Dome, and for a couple years earlier in the old Veterans Stadium (except for some times my country needed me elsewhere), and I really don’t care where we play the Hogeye Criminals.

There was once a time when half of Williams Arena was filled with Hogeye Criminal fans. No more. The same will be true of outdoor Gopher football. You will have a few seats, no more.

Yes I’ll be glad when the gophers leave the Metrodome. I never did like it there for FB or BB. I use to go to at least one game a season when they were still on campus and I hope I can do that again. In all the years of playing in the dome I only attended just one game. And that was more than enough for me……

Nice article about Triplett and Rallis this morning. Not sure if the author said Rallis is a freshman and Triplett a junior. This team is young and getting some great experience. Bodes well for next year’s D.

Good riddance to the Dome!

Since I’m a Twins’ fan, Saturday will (unfortunately) not be my last visit to the Metrodump. I rarely attend Vikings games (only when someone gives me tickets,) so I may never enter the building again after the 2009 baseball season. That will make me very happy.

The Dome, for the Gophers, has been a disaster. Shame on Paul Giel for agreeing to play there!

I see such a bright future for this program in the new stadium. I know there’s been some pain this season and last, but I truly believe that Bruininks, Maruri, Brewster and company have this program moving in the right direction. Regardless of the outcome on Saturday.

GO GOPHERS!!!

I’m extremely excited for this weekend, and not just for the game itself, but the friendly rivalry I have with friends. I went to college just into Iowa (not at IU)and have tons of friends who are Hawkeye fans. The constant, friendly banter that goes on all year makes these game so enjoyable!

From my experience, none of them are going to miss the Dome. They are looking forward to the new stadium, but not the fact that they’ll be playing us outdoors in late November. I don’t think they realize that it’s going to be tough to get tickets going forward.

We as Gopher fans can complain about Hawkeye fans all we want, but as an overall sports fan, you also have to admit that IA has a huge following and great fans (regardless of if you like that fact or not). It’s the same as admitting that the Packers have great fans… If there weren’t any professional sports in this town, we would have the same following, but the Gopher fan base isn’t what it used to be. It’s been great to see the resurgence as of late, and I look forward to seeing it continue to grow as we move back to campus.

That being said, I can’t wait for the game! Should be a great time.

I’ll be at out tailgating at the crack of dawn, so feel free to stop on by. See you all Saturday!

Go Gophers!

The dome was a good thing for the U. It was truly a deal, no rent and a huge recruiting tool to lure southern players to the U without fear of the elements. It was and still is a beautiful facility that serves its purpose. Heck, in these economic times we should be more worried about feeding the poor as opposed to building Jock Palaces. I am not so sure it is a good thing to leave the dome. There are many older fans who will just say to hell with it rather than sit outside on a cold dreary saturday afternoon. The controlled climate of the dome is a GOOD thing.

And bigguy, haven’t you noticed how people hijack monikers around here. You will never catch me singing the praises of the dome.

The ONLY thing the dome is good for is that it is the final home of the vikings before the vikings put themselves up for sale again and move on to parts unknown.

Keep the vikings in the dome until the day they go away! The sooner the better. NO assistance for wilf. The old wilfster might just as well take his team away now. LA needs a team. Mexico City would be a good expansion location. Perhaps some Saudi Prince might like to bring the vikings over there! That’s where the money is! Or, Switzerland…a neutral home for the nfl franchise that currently lives in a dome. Minnesota won’t and can’t give this wilfster any money.

Why do you put up with it? They are dragging your blog through their own private cesspools of trash and their sociopathic behaviors need to be arrested NOW!

Kent, you need to put a stop to this. Certainly your editors can help you. A registration system that would NOT allow all this hijacking of monikers and a standard of what is reasonable and what is unreasonable could be set up.

It is funny to hear the different points of view on the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. There are (were) those who saw and were enamored with indoor comfort and protection whilst sacrificing atmosphere, unpredictable climate changes, mud, etc. Also, the reverberation of sounds in a “tank” like that detracts from a true college atmosphere. The Dome is not a stadium built (as many today are) where fans are closer to the paying field.

Also, having a indoor facility zaps the energy and emotion (after game after game) of playing when there is NO SUN or any true natural direct light (clouds or not). It does make a difference. It is funny to read about the “older” (and I am over 50) folks talk about how convenient the Dome is for them, yet the younger folks applaud the dawning of an outdoor collegiate stadium - a notion that my father would also applaud because that generation believed in the forces of nature are part of life. I applaud the new generation that believes this way and are now experiencing a “new recession or depression” - tough times make people tough(er).

Just listening to the many complaints of the student section and the excuses they give for not being at the dome, one can only imagine how poorly the student section will erspond to adverse weather conditions.

I’m almost 62 and I LOVE outdoor football! I just dress to enjoy the game regardless of the conditions.

The students don’t think they can walk the short distance to the dome from the West Bank Campus area. They think 11:00am is “too early…” What will happen when it is cold, rainy, snowing and as windy as can be? I’ll be there. Will the complaining student sections be there?

Any truth to the rumors that the pigeons RB would not be eligible for a bowl game? I believe comments by pigeon faithful were something like: Green has been to class as much as Brad Banks was. The first and last days.

Green must be one of the good guys in Iowa, he hasn’t been arrested yet. I’m sure Capt Kirk tried covering this up about as well as the Everson rape. Win or lose the Pigeons are an embarrassment to the NCAA. And that truly is saying something!

How many times did that game one scenario play out over the years?? I almost feel like there has been a curse on that pos dome.

Texas Gopher says:

November 19th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

DAC–I realize that. One of the real nice surprises this year has been the play of Campbell. That guy has Big Ten middle linebacker written all over him. Theret has improved also, but agst Iowa, a healthy Campbell is critical to stop the run. Too bad he is banged up—I am guessing he will play though.

david_allen_coe says:

November 19th, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Tex … Campbell has been one of the handful of biggest improvements from a year ago, Garret Brown, Sherels and Theret being further examples. (I don’t include Willie because he just got back to normal with two hands).

I suspect Cambell and Theret will neither one be 100% Saturday but both will give it all they have. Rallis can give great run support so I am not so worried if he steps in for Theret. We don’t have a replacement for Campbell.

Texas Gopher says:

November 19th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

DAC–I would not discount the coaching staff having something to do with WVDS’s improvement also. I am very impressed with what Roof has done this year. I realize we still are giving up a lot of points and committing some dumb penalties, but overall, much improved.

david_allen_coe says:

November 19th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Tex … Willie led the Big Ten in sacks as a sophomore, the last time he was healthy before this fall.

No, I don’t discount the coaching, the schemes, and the improvement of others alongside Willie but I still consider that he is playing back at his true level of talent rather than greatly “improved”.

Jimbo says:

November 19th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

It’s all semantics, d_a(sp)_c. Although having 2 healthy arms is the biggest thing for Willie, I think the improvement of those around him (especially the secondary) has contributed greatly to his success this year.

I think we can all agree that he’s simply a fine football player, and he’s showing us how good he can be when he’s healthy.

I hope to be watching him on Sunday afternoons next year.
