Saturday, pre-game

Posted on November 22nd, 2008 – 4:27 PM
By Kent Youngblood

Greetings from the dome.

Well, that’s the last time I’ll say that in a Gridiron Gold blog. For those of you now going to the game, you should know that downtown Minny is crawling with folks in Hawkeye yellow. If all goes as planned in the future, there won’t be so many available tickets for visiting fans in seasons to come.

Well, Ohio State took care of business and it appears Penn State is doing the same. Things seem on track for the Big Ten to get two teams in the BCS bowl picture. Penn State will go to Pasadena, with Ohio State also gettting a possible BCS bid.

It would seem Ohio State would be pretty much a lock if Oregon State loses one of its final two games.

With two Big Ten teams in the BCS series, the next two bowls in the Big Ten pecking order — the Capital One and Outback Bowls — would be able to pick from any bowl-eligible conference team. It would also move the Gophers up in the pecking order. If Illinois loses — and that game wasn’t over yet as I blogged this — the only other bowl eligible teams in the conference would be the Gophers, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin and Northwestern.

One word describes this U of M team:
S T U P I D

They play stupid. Unbelievable. This coaching staff is overqualified - in other words, they are pro coaches trying to coach 19 year olds with adrenaline. Does not work.

Got $200 for my tickets on StubHub. That’s the smartest move I’ve made all year. Gophers fans in the dome are NOT enjoying themselves.

Next year: O line overhaul and a new QB before the end of that year - MarQueis Gray. It is now obvious that Weber is both physically beat up and psyched out by all the pass rush coming his way.

Gopher in So Cal says:

No trophies this year - why bother with a bowl game - it is shame time and motivation for next year. “Tough love”

Joe1701 says:

Just changed the channel, can’t stand to watch these clowns. They don’t belong in the Big Ten. The new coach is worse than Mason, or at least the same. No defense, no offense, no special teams. I’ll give him two more years then they can hire someone with actual coaching experience, or move into a division II league if they don’t want to be serious.

Thanks a lot for being a mercenary p_ick and selling your tickets to the enemy Kirby. We don’t need “fans” like you. Go follow the Vikings traitor.

Gopher in So Cal says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm

I love the “pro set” and tonight it is wearing the Gopher D down. Funny how this set was what Mason used. Wish the Gophers would be more versatile and mix the O up - I hate the (once rare) shotgun.

Gopher in So Cal says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:23 pm

This Iowa team may be the second or third best team in the Big Ten right now. Kudos to them.

kirby says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Go ahead & call me a mercenary p_ick, Goldy. When the game’s over I’ll be the mercenary p_ick with $400 dollars in his pocket! Enjoy the game, I’m going to do something worthwhile.

Gopher in So Cal says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Joe - I agree. The administration at the U has NEVER been serious about a putting (serious) investment into football. The stadium is a token, Brewster’s hiring is a cheap token. I do not see the “money.” This is pure torture and disingenuousness by them toward the fan base and we should do something.

Goldy_is_my_hero! says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Why bother even buying tickets in the first place, Kirby? We don’t need traitors like you. Don’t bother coming to TCF Bank stadium.

Gopher in So Cal says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Boy - Has this team turned into a VERY BAD team! And Weber with it. No bolw please ’cause NOBODY will watch. And if you will, you are a TRUE MASOCHIST.

Goldy_is_my_hero! says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

This game is a complete collapse. This has to be on the coaching staff. If they can’t make some changes and fix some things at half time, they should forfeit their paychecks.

Goldy_is_my_hero! says:

What $$ would make a difference? The apathy will only be cemented with this puke effort.

What a waste of a 7-1 start…although at the time I think we had the worst 7-1 team in the country. Now I think we have the worst 7-4 (soon to be 7-5) team in the nation.

At least we have the top-ranked college hockey team in the country right now. I know what I’ll be watching tonight.

Wallyb2 says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:52 pm

What the hell is going on here. Its the half and our Gophers are down 27 to 0. Brewster, you are not a college coach! Please take your sorry ass and go coach somewhere else. Please pull Adam Weber for the 2nd half, he is terrible at QB! Every year its the same story, mistakes on top of more mistakes! And get rid of this spread offense and let’s get back to something that works. I can’t believe what Im watching here. I am turning off my TV for the 2nd half. to all the players that made mistakes today and to all the coaches you have all failed once again……

Goldy_is_my_hero! says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:53 pm

The truth is that the problem is not money it’s priorities and as long as frickin’ hockey is #1 for the majority of Gopher fans this program will continue to be a joke. No one outside of this state cares about frickin’ college hockey!

Chad says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 7:53 pm

This Hawkeye football squad is not nearly as average (or below average) as it seemed most Gopher fans on here have asserted during the week … We have a well-coached team with players that did not give up when the chips were down earlier this year … With that, I bid you adieu! Go HAWKS!!!

Goldy_is_my_hero! says:

How fitting this game is given the Gopher history in the Metrodump. Just like so many others. We must be cursed.

Gopher in So Cal says:

I hated the MetroDome since day one. What a gawd awful sight - a septic tank. Good riddance! Would love to see the Vikes in LA by 2011 and then see the MetroDump imploded or deflated and a parking ramp built over it.

Punky Brewster hasn’t made the program any better then it was when he got here.

We will drop our last 4 games of the year, go 3-5 in a less than stellar Big 10 and limp into a meaningless bowl game.

This program is still a complete joke.

Gopher in So Cal says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Goldy… that was good - you may be right… or perhaps they butchered hundreds of gophers in the process of building it.

Goldy_is_my_hero! says:

The system would only have made some of the Iowa offensive stats less inflated. We’d still be crushed by all of our own mistakes and penalties.

Anybody out there? Just checking in. I’m still pretty comfortable with my decision to skip this game. ….In all seriousness, though. I’m a Brewster supporter, but he’s now dug himself a pretty big hole. Which actually might be good in the long run. If you buy that the Gophers were improving earlier this year (which I did), by the same token you now must admit that they’ve really regressed when it’s counted. Brewster’s gonna have two years of recruits next year. If they aren’t at least an 8 win team (or .500 in the Big Ten) he’s probably gone considering the fiasco of the past month. I say that’s a good thing, because now he’ll have his back against the wall. We’ll see if there’s any substance to go with the talk. I’m willing to give him a chance, but next year’s the time to go hard or go home. So much for that Tennessee talk, huh?

How could we have gone down so fast! I just don’t understand. Someone give me some answers. I have stayed with the Gophs for years and years and I don’t know how many more meltdowns I can take. All your talk about firing Dunbar is rediculous - its Brewster that recruits the talent, and right now they dont have enough to compete in the upper half of the conference.

UI Power says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 9:45 pm

GO HAWKS!!! I love watching the Hawks beat the tar out of an over-rated Gopher team. How quickly the Gopher Kool-aid changed from Rosy in October to black in November.

The thing that get’s me, each year the Gophers start the same 3-0, 4-0 vs 3rd grade cupcakes and the state goes crazy, each year the team finish 0-4, 1-3 (against Big Ten Teams) and everyone calls for the coach’s head. This cycle makes me laugh harder and harder each year. Maybe if you realized the Kool-aid wasn’t Rosy in Sept then the fall wouldn’t be a shock in November. GO HAWKS!!!

November 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Really?…………..

and how did the gophers do against Michigan and Wis? No matter what Michigan did this year, they still have a top ten recruiting class each year, so their talent level is far superior. Plus look at who they play non conference - its a lot tougher than the cupcakes the gophers played. As for Cal poly - they are ranked #3 in the FCS, and came in with a 8-1 record. Cal poly would have destroyed the gophers.

November 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Ouch…that was painful. Almost as bad as the Giants drubbing of the Vikings a few years back. Did anyone notice when the game was still in contention, how many times we had them on third a long, and actually had a defensive players arms wrapped around their qb, only to have him shake it off, and throw for a first down. I believe it happened four times. I also want to jump on the coaching sucks bandwagon. These guys panicked early, and it showed in their play calling. Iowa is one of the better teams in the Big Ten, but are guys looked like they gave up. Nice coaching.

I guess its always the coaching, isnt it? You people must be the same people who get high school coaches fired because you think you know more than they do. Bototm line is they dont have the talent to compete, and Brewster will be given at least 1-2 more years to prove himoself.

Docfromdarwin says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Sorry they will NOT win or get close to a victory in whatever (probably Insight) bowl they may be invited to. If Insight, they probably get Kansas. I will predict a KU victory by at least 24 points. If Motor City (but Whiskey U will go there), still another defeat vs. Ball State. All other sports at the “U” are decent but football is an absolute EMBARRASSMENT!

IamnotPGammons says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Really?….

I think it had more to do with no talent on the O line…Weber has been beat up so much that he has gotten gun shy and lost confidence. With that said, Weber and Decker are talented, but they have no one else to help out. Also, the defense is on the field way too much, especially when the offense goes 3 and out all the time. Dunbar (or any coach) needs talent to make plays work.

UI Power—if this is the happiest day of your life I think you need to get a LIFE! I do agree with your perspective on the Gopher cupcake schedule but do you really need to get on the Gopher blog and bash? Your the type of Hawkeye fan I have to deal with day in and day out here is Iowa City!

Hey pal this was the worst loss in 105 years!! At least Mason was competitive.. Weber has gone completely in the tank and should have been benched 3 game ago Remember the Game Mortenson had at Michigan?? The pretty boy from the city got to brewster and brown nosed enough to start

Hey, Youngblood? Weren’t you writing last week about how this was a different Gophers team and they showed it even in losing to Wisconsin? Well, you were right on one point - it’s a different team. Did we EVER lose this badly under Mason?

The pathetic coaching was evident at the end of the 1st half. A good kickoff return, followed by two offensive penalties and a punt. Defense unable to stop the same basic play over and over. Missed tackles. On the goal line, NOBODY covers the tight end (announcers said it was “man to man coverage” - replay clearly showed “nobody to man” coverage.

Truth is, Brewster quit when he didn’t even attempt to put on points at the end of the 1st half against Wisconsin. His quitting showed the team what was expected, and they responded.

I hope they do not go to a bowl. If they do, I will not watch. I’ve had enough. In the last four games, the Gophers have more than reversed the improvement they showed to that point.

I agree this loss was bad…..but now you are saying Mason was a good coach? If we went back at looked at the startribune archives we would probably see your posts blasting mason when he was a coach also! I forgot that Darwin was football heaven!

1. Have I ever mentioned that I really don’t like the spread?

2. Three years ago I asked the question: are you sure that by getting rid of Mason the program will even be half as good under the new guy even with the new stadium?

3. As much as I hate Iowa, wasn’t it nice to see a college team running an offense with real snap? An adult offense?

4. Is our O better today than it was 16 Big Ten games ago? It seems to me it is clearly worse than it was last year.

5. Is any offensive coordinator in the country paid more per first down than Dunbar?

6. I have been a fan for 42 years. Now I am being asked by the U to endure a string of changes over the past two years that I voted against. Why am I buying three season tickets every year to see the results of those changes I opposed?

7. Am I enjoying going to these games in some way? It dawned on me tonight that I am not. I’m watching what I do not want, being done very poorly.

8. This team, minus two of its best players will be the team opening TCF.

Docfromdarwin says:

Weber has been beat up because he can’t read a defense, only throws to one guy, runs out of the pocket too soon, and can’t throw more than 5 to 15 yards he isn’t the answer for the next two years

BackonCampus says:

Like I said - I forgot Darwin is home to all the football experts….are you watching the same player Doc? He cant read a defense, or stay in the pocket because he is always running fo rhim life! His O line is awful - but I guess when you played for Darwin HS you were were an awesome quarterback who didnt need an O line…..

Like father like son.

Loon - I am an alum and for over 33 years it has been the same ole, same ole in football (I am not even mentioning the basketball mess a few years ago). Our U has been mismanaged in the “big” (money making) sports. Basketball may be coming around. But for how long? Football since the Minnesota Football Vikings came to town has its wind taken out and I see little to no sign of hope. I am putting my money into academics and humanitarian relief but not U football until I see real change!

My bad….I guess since Van Desteeg and Mortenson are players “from your area” that makes you the expert…..wow - talk about crying over spilled milk…..just because your boy mortenson isnt playing thats the reason why the ggophers lost/losing? WOW!!!!!

Mason? No way, anybody brining up his name needs to go back and watch some videos (I recommend the Michigan or Texas Tech comebacks). Brewster isn’t Jesus, but I still think his recruiting will bring something to us. Look what a change Roof made, I’m just not sold on Dunbar.

So where is “your area, wise guy?” heres a few others from out here cory sauter, jon hoese, stan systma(gopher captain) how about nate swift at nebraska (holds rec record over rodgers) lydon murtha starting tackle nebraska and jon carlson captain notre dame now with the seahawks so don’t put down the small schools And how much worse could Tony have done? Also a senior in his last game Bush league brester leaves weber in until its 55 zip nice guy no wonder half of those kids don’twant to play for him

BigGuy says:

I think this team needs to update the offense some more. They need to scan the defense in go deeper into the play clock, even get to the line and then call a play. I know Iowa burned some timeouts, but they were looking for the best play. The gophers huddle and then come up and snap the play almost hoping they have the right call made. I hope this evolves as the team grows.

I have stuck by Weber, but it is obvious that we need a more accurate or multidementional QB. Out line was playing ole all night.

It’s great to recruit athletes but they better have some football smarts to go with it.

Dear Really,

As an adult I can stand a loss, even a heartbreaking loss. We no longer belong on the same field with good teams any more. Sorry Really, we have never had as easy a schedule as we have this year and any team, in a very weak Big Ten this year, with half a defense is killing us.

To lose is one thing, we are getting creamed now. Humiliated and mocked.

the Loon says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Big Guy, we are playing a lot of stupid football now. Did you think we looked well coached tonight? I did not. We have no O, zero running game and every team we play now knows it.

gowildandgotwins says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 10:46 pm

For those out there saying that they hope the Gophers don’t go to a bowl game, this team will be invited to a bowl game (most likely the Motor City Bowl-where they would likely face a team from the MAC i.e. Ball State or Central Michigan). As much as you think they shouldn’t be invited, the Big Ten has 7 bowl eligible teams and 7 bowl tie-ins. Conference tie-ins are part of the bowl system, so you’ll have to deal with it.

As for accepting a bowl invitation, I think it would be wrong not to. After a 1-11 season against pretty poor competition, you accept a bowl invitation after a 7-5 season against poor competition. If you don’t, you send the message to possible recruits that the bar is set higher than your program is ever going to be able to reach. Plus, accepting the bowl invitation allows the team to have some extra pactices and an extra game (certainly a positive thing for your returning players for the following season).

BigGuy says:

Brewster does have to take some blame for this. I thought the D was fine until they were on the field too long. Offense is horrible. Iowa is a pretty good team and Wisconsin is not, I think that is the lesson of the last two weeks.

Does anyone think Brewster dare fire Dunbar going into next season?

BigGuy says:

November 22nd, 2008 at 10:55 pm

Big Ten will not send a team to Motor City if Ohio State makes BCS. I agree you don’t decline a bowl ever, especially with a young team and one that missed out a bowl the previous year. You want the young players to taste to bowl season.

“Big Ten will not send a team to Motor City if Ohio State makes BCS.”

Right. If Ohio State gets a BCS at-large bid, then the Gophers will be headed to the Insight Bowl where they would play the #6 team from the Big 12. That could be an ugly game as their likely opponents would be Nebraska or Kansas. I don’t like our chances against either of those teams…but you still go and play the game.

Big guy,

I think this brewster NEEDS to fire this dunbar and bring in an ooc who can build an offensive line and has a clue about how to construct a solid running game.

This brewster has to scrap his spread offense fiasco. He will NEVER have the players he needs to run the spread offense. He will never outrecruit even a program like Michigan for spread offense players that will dominate the Big Ten. He will always be saying jsut two or three seasons more and I will have what I need to dominate the Big Ten with the spread.

It’s not going to happen with this coaching stff, next year..th year after or even the year after that.

Bring in an offense that balances an excellent running attack with a pro-style passing game. Do some zone blocking with athletic offensive linemen. Use some two tight end sets.

Ditch this dunbar NOW. He is leading this program down a path to the bottom of the Big Ten. This richrod character is destroying Michigan. He is a LOT more credible than this brewster…and I don’t know IF he is going to be able to get the job done at Michigan. Give him one more blow-out loss to OSU…maybe even just one more loss to OSU and there will be a growing number of Michigan fans who start demanding that richrod needs to be gone. 3-9 at Michigan losing to MAC teams in the Big House?

Of course, as horrible as Michiga was this year, this richrod DID blow this brewster out. Pathetic. Really pathetic.

Fire/ditch/dump this dunbar NOW!

—————————————

I remember the game. Mortenson entered in the 4th quarter to hand off to Gary Russell who ran for 65 yards and set up the game winning field goal. He did an excellent job of calling the play in the huddle, setting up the blocking, taking the snap, and handing off. He however did not throw a single pass in the game and is not mentioned in the statistics. Mortenson also started the next game against Wisconsin and went 7-17 passing for 99 yards with 1 TD and 1 Int. The Gophers rushed for 411 yards in that game but managed to lose.
