Another Monday update

By Kent Youngblood

Couple of things.

 1. I much be thick-headed or something, but I need the fellow who called me a brew crew bag man — nice alliteration, by the way — to explain to me what he means. I need to understand the phrase so i can feel properly chastened.

2. Just got an e-mail from Career Sports & Entertainment — the folks who represent Todd Fitch, among others — saying that Fitch is staying at East Carolina.

So that means Gunter Brewer and Fitch are out. Mr. Horton also interviewed, but that was a week ago.

Still, I’m hearing the announcement could come tomorrow. Is there a mystery name out there?

And what’s a bag man?

In college football a bag man is the guy who puts cash in a bag and delivers this cash to a recruit in order to secure his recruiting. For those programs engaged in this activity, it is essential to keep a lot of space between the program and the bag man so as to provide the program with “plausible deniability”. An essential for Joel Maturi. I know for a fact that you are not the man Brewster hired for that job. Luther Darnvil was the bag man for the Hoax.

By the way Kent, I still do not know how many tickets were bought through the U for the Kansas game as compared to the TT game two years ago. These number will clearly show us one snap shot of how much support for the Gophers is growing, not growing or falling apart. Other factors can be added in once the raw numbers are established.

I’ve heard the term “bag man” used to describe someone who delivers bribes or payoffs, so I suppose in this context, he’s saying that Kent is “in the pocket” of Brewster and providing positive reports instead of telling “the truth” about the Gopher program. Personally, I think Brewster is a BS artist, but I still hope they have a decent season in ‘09.

Kent … In this application, “bag man” is anyone who does not mindlessly and moronically denegrate Brewster in every utterance.

Tottally agree but it ALWAYS the coaches fault in this town did’nt you know. Brad Childress wrecked the economy, Tim Brewster restarted the fighting in the West bank! as far as the bag man comment Kent the person who mentioned it does’nt even know what it’s supposed to mean so how would you.

Thanks for the update Kent. I’m disappointed it isn’t Fitch. I’ll have to do some homework on Horton.

Could Brewster be sandbagging on this and we’ll end up with Heupel?

I am officially putting this OC search in the “worrisome” (i.e. what the hell is going on here) category.

Texas Gopher says:

January 19th, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I have said it before but this “co-coordinator” label stinks. I have a feeling that is running people off.

wrenagain2: watchthisbrewsterassumethefootballphilosophyofhisnewcoordinators says:

January 19th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

tex, I have a hunch that the running off of potentioa “co” coordinator candidates has a LOT to do with losing the last 5 games of the season and the way they were lost, the combination of this maturi and this brewsters’ personalities AND their professional reputations AND the fact that they haven’t been interviewing “macturian candidates…” (you know, former failed wisky coaches…or even this maturi’s god-son, chryst who is the current wisky offensive coordinator who maturi tried to pawn off on us as the repalcement for the former coach…)

tex, this combo of this maturi and this brewster is not working out too well.

Tt says:

January 19th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

Oh ya tex! Thank god cosgrove was living in a dumpster in madison or this “worrisome situation” would be X 2!

Foo says:

Kent… what about Steve Logan as an OC candidate? He was the Boston College OC under Jeff Jagadzinski and he left the program when Jagadzinski was fired. Logan was also the head coach at East Carolina for 10 years. His BC offenses were pretty good - could he be a fit here?

Bayfieldgopher says:

January 19th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

My thoughts exactly Texas.

What seasoned killer hire OC would come to Gopherland just to hold hands with Tim Davis? Duh@!!!!Nothing against Davis mind you.

Brewster should just go ahead and name himself as OC. Wren would be ecstatic as that would save the UM a few bucks. Why not? Brewster has been around for awhile as he has his PhD in football.

IMO, Brewster has stubbed his toe big time and has boxed himself into a corner with his recent decision-making.

KENT, being called a bagman by these far out kooks might even be a compliment, you sure wouldn’t like to have their attitudes.

Maybe some of these candidates ideas and Brewsters vary. They have to fit in as well as be good OC’s. They have to want to come and be wanted. Not everyone is in that category.

LETS JUST WAIT AND SEE, all the speculation in the world mean doesn’t mean crap! Except keep everybody here busy.

Kent, I wouldnt worry about the dorky airbags.
Some of these people are clueless, like Loon plotting numbers during: a depression compared to a good economy.
Yes, Loon, great comparison there.
Gosh, what other factor might affect travel……..
Was it Gold or Dan on the last thread who measured your intelligence. I think they gave you too much credit.
Really, clowns on parade on the gopher blog.

And how about a game or two?
Lest our idiots BEMOANING a 55-0 loss to Iowa realize HOW much emotion plays week TO week in football…….
Az lost to Philly BY 4 TD’s in December,
Also lost to NE 47-7 just weeks AGO.
Our beloved Vikes even stomped them!

How’s Arizona doing Loon? Rene-dunce?
Maybe DAC can explain it to you, I just cant waste my time with morons.
And kent, you are doing a fine job.
Brewster will succeed or fail in the next few years. News is who he hires and recruits, not the analysis of basement dwellers who watch way too much ESPN. End of story.
Kent, as always thank for the updates.

andover joe says:

January 19th, 2009 at 10:11 pm

And the geniuses can explain:
How does a team lose 47-7 to an also- ran, and then go the Super Bowl?
How? How?
What’s the expert analysis from our geniuses?
I dare to dream to be as smart as the elite of our blog!!!!!
Then maybe I can coach a team to victory over NDSU (assuming those Fargo warriors botch the last second kick).

Hey Kent: As always thanks for the updates. ‘Alliteration’ is the repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables, so I’m not seeing that being used.

Here a bag man is someone living on the street. We’ll see what today brings. I’m not as optimistic as I have been. I hope they can prove me wrong and Gold04 right.

Texas Gopher says:

January 20th, 2009 at 7:23 am

Yesterday I had the OC search in the “worrisome” category and if we don’t have an OC named and signed by closing time today, it will then go in the “we are screwed” category. An entire Federal Govt. cabinet was put in place in less time. This is the first time I have come down hard on Brewster but this has been completely mishandled.

Texas Gopher says:

January 20th, 2009 at 8:12 am

NYC–I must be in a grumpy mood today but Gold04 is sounding more and more like the pied piper to me these days. I am sure Brewster is just as disappointed/frustrated as anyone, but short of a miracle hire, this is not playing out well.

Texas Gopher says:

January 20th, 2009 at 8:19 am

I think Brewster has reached the point where he needs to take a huge chance on a Div2 or D3 OC. In poker terms, he is now drawing to an inside straight. He might as well push it all in and hope he catches the card. Right now he is just being antied sp? off. Geez, why do I care so much??

Texas Gopher says:

January 20th, 2009 at 8:21 am

Someone throw me a lifeline—a word of encouragement. I am ready to tell my boss to shove it and go apply for that OC job myself!

Tex … Take a break and relax. How in the world could naming an offensive coordinator one day be a good thing but if it is one or two days later it’s a disaster?

Give the man the chance to get the best guy possible and quit worrying about the timing. And please, don’t use the speed in which a bunch of warmed over hacks and tax cheats are named to a cabinet as some kind of standard.

Bisker82 says:

January 20th, 2009 at 8:57 am

Tex,

Take a deep breath. Now take another. Relax until the annoucement is made. IMO, whoever does end up with the position will have a lot of talent to work with. Tim Davis is an asset and will make the job of OC easier not cause unrest like some would like to believe. Recruiting better athletes is what eventually will improve any college team and so far Brewster has done a good job. I hope whoever does take the job will stick around for a while. Stability on the offense is definitely a must.

Wisconsin Ken:

I believe the type of “bag man” the previous writer was referring to is a bag man who carries a bag full of crap and excuses; which is exactly what you do for the rigime. Come on man, write about some facts! Don’t say everyone is turning the job down because its a one year offer unless you know this to be true. If it is true, dig into why the rigime is only offering one year when that is not what the market is demanding! Also, why even allude to Peter Pan telling you the tooth fairy said there might be some big “mystery candidate” swirling in the wind? Why? Is there? You need to tell it like it is and hold this JA’s feet to the fire like Reusse does! Thats your job..not sugarcoating, running interference or making excuses for the regime! If you really want to do something useful, dig into why did the U. go ahead and cost out the new stadium at the peak of every market out there when they were warned recession was on the horizon and much, much cheaper prices were coming?????? They blew $10s of millions by not setting still for just one year! They blew enough jing by not listening, that they could have started a 57,000 seat stadium for the same price one year later!!!! Dig, man, the story is there but no one wants to hear it and of course, “baggy” won’t tell it!!!!!!! Finally, why does your paper waste ink on a cad like Gary Russell–someone who embarrassed this University to no end????????

The list of coaches that have turned this job down keeps getting longer by the weeks. Good luck in your search Kent if I could steer you in one direction it would be to the SR. bowl down in Alabama. Many unemployed coaches down there this week.

This OC search is beginning to look like The Oakland Raiders coaching search a few years ago when about a dozen candidates either declined an offer or an invitation to interview. Finally, Lane Kiffin took it as something like the Raiders’ 13th choice.

Go get Steve Logan, previously of Boston College.

A friend told me that Hayo Carpenter is scheduled to visit Iowa State soon. Wonder what this means? Just looking for a free trip? If so, you would think he would pick somewhere south.

Iowa St? Wasn’t Brandon Owens committed to ISU before coming to Minnesota. ISU is the laughingstock of the Big 12. Even Baylor is better than ISU. ISU LMAOR. ISU refuses to even play Minnesota backing out of a contract in the 90’s.

The Latest: Wingo comments on U trip — 1/19/2009

Minnesota introduced some power sets during the Insight Bowl and there is no doubt that Tim Brewster wants to run the ball with some power. The Gophers brought in a recruit that could add to the equation, Ronnie Wingo

keepthisbrewsterhonest: contrast by THE RENEGADE says:

derek does his dirty tricks and is impotent to make his feeble excuses stick. The only thing that matters for this brewster, this new “co” coordinator situation and this maturi and this prexy b will be the number of Big Ten wins vs the number of Big Ten losses in 2009 and possibly into 2010 IF…the brewster is able to hang on that long. If there are too few Big Ten wins, this brewster will not be able to hang on.

Hate on me derek…try to tell lies…but, in the end, this brewster’s career will die if he can not produce a LOT of Big Ten wins in the next year or two. I fear we will see more of what we have seen in the past two seasons…the past 25 games from this brewster. The results are just not there. The ONLY measure of this brewster is the number of Big Ten wins vs. the number of Big Ten losses. So far he has 3 Big Ten wins and 13 Big Ten losses.

derek: I will be around because all I do is look at the results of the Big Ten games coached by this brewser. 3 wins and 13 losses. That is where this brewster stands today. His failure to win Big Ten games is NOT my fault. I merely keep the facts of life in Big Ten play as a part of any discussion of the brewster situation at the University of Minnesota. For crying out loud. He is supposed to be running this program. He NEEDS to be judged by the only criteria that is NOT debatable, is not spinable and can NOT be argued by anyone This brewster’s Big Ten won/loss record simply IS what it IS. 3-13. That is NOT good. That projects to one or two more seasons for this brewster and then he will be gone. The success of the program depends upon the success…or failure of this brewster to be able to WIN Big Ten games. He has failed up to this point in time. The 2009 season will be a new season. Only Big Ten wins will help this brewster. All Big Ten losses will deeply hurt this brewster’s chances of long-trm survval. That is the way it is. That is a fact of life. That is the way it MUST be. This brewster is in a career life or death struggle. He needs a LOT of Big Ten wins. That is a fact derek. If he fails…he fails. If he succeeds…he succeeds. The PROGRAM needs a lot of Big Ten wins. The ball is in this brewster’s court. He ill either do it…or he won’t get it done. It is on his back. His recruiting can’t save him if his recruits don’t produce a lot of Big Ten wins… : 0{

Smokey Joe says:

Going back and forth on this whole thing, the truth is the program has stunk for years, at times, worse than stunk (stank?) Anyway, there were glimmers of hope last year, then the same pattern of collapse.

Like the 03 game with Michigan, which was program defining, this will be a program defining year. If the Gophers slip badly it will be the begining of the end of Brewster and set the program back yet again(as the Michigan comeback was for Mason and did to the Gophers).

On the other hand if this very young team develops (pray for an O line), who knows? The scehdule is legit so if they can manage 7-8 wins it would be a huge step forward.

Who knows? Maybe the Shadow cause I have not a clue…………………..
