Difficult news for Sam Maresh
Posted on February 17th, 2009 – 11:35 AMBy Kent Youngblood
It looks like Sam Maresh has another battle on his hands.
The former Champlin Park star linebacker and Gophers recruit had just recently been cleared to resume his football career after recovering from heart surgery that cost him his 2008 season. He had enrolled in school and was anticipating taking part in spring practices.
Now doctors have found a tumor in his left calf. The news was disclosed by the Maresh family on the CaringBridge.com website in a post written by Sam’s father, Bill.
”With all the focus on Sam’s heart and his lifting going so well, we were not really focusing on Sam’s left calf hurting him,” Bill Maresh wrote. ”We just kept icing and riding the bike instead of running. Sam called me the other day and said it just wouldn’t get better and asked if I would take him in to get it checked out. Through x-ray, ultra-sound and MRI the doctors came in and said ‘Well Sam, I guess with you it’s never easy’ …They found a tumor in his left calf.”
The good news, according to the post, was the bone in Maresh’s leg looks good. There is a very low chance that the tumor is cancer.

Wow. Sam Maresh has had a difficult road this past year.
Wow. This kid can’t get a break. Glad to hear it’s probably not cancer, might not be that major (cut it out and move on?). I’ll look on the bright side though: this is set up to be a great comeback story! Looking forward to seeing Maresh dominate. He’ll certainly have some frustrations to take out once he hits the field. Good luck!
The kid is a fighter - I hope to see him play someday.
Keep your head up, Sam! It’s been a long, hard road, but it’ll be worth it once you finally step out on the field in maroon and gold.
Even though he hasn’t played a down, Sam has shown what true character & resolve should be!! Best of luck to him and his family. I hope everything turns out for the best, football or not.
Good luck Sam!!!
So far thanks to Bird, Bud, Loon etc. for not finding something bad to say about this. Hope they understand that Brewster has nothing to do with this.
It put things in the proper perspective about what is important.
Best of luck and best wishes to Sam and family. Keep your head up!
What a ton of burdens Sam Maresh has shouldered for two years while fighting for his dream. A greathearted kid from an obviously great family.
Mr. Maresh is a class act. It’s really hard not to love that family. Good luck Sam.
Possible to get the caringbridge information to look into for Sam?
Hang in there Sam! You’ve got a great family and a whole state behind you. Best of luck to you, and hope your recovery is super-fast.
Sam, I expect to see you in a gopher uniform in the new stadium. No, you won’t be on the sideline. You have a great future in front of you, you just have one more hurddle. Unlike the others I’m not going to wish you good luck but instead hope you kick azz.
Good luck Sam. My prayers are with you and hope your recovery is a speedy one.
Sam hang in there. You will be back up and running again soon. My prayers are with you and your family
Dismantling Big Ten competition (and USC!!) will be a piece of cake for this guy!! Good luck Sam, we can’t wait to see you on the field!!
amazing man and athlete
awaiting the all clear and to see
you in maroon and gold
You don’t have to put on a maroon and gold jersey to be my hero Sam, you already have earned that honor! May God bless you and your family!
I have to wonder if this kid, who works his butt off in the weight room, may have unknowingly gotten into a bad supplement - or some kind of weightlifting supplement that may have hurt him. Not many 19 year olds have open heart surgery followed by an unrelated tumor?
I had and still have one of those on my arm that I have had for 45 years. Sam will be OK with this now that the doctors can give it a good look and get an action plan in place.
Good luck and just take life one day at a time.
Best of luck in overcoming this new obstacle Sam. You have all of Gopher Nation pulling for you!
Littlebigboy, I have never said a bad thing about Sam. My only concern has been for him and his family. Football is not the end all to be all. I have always had his well being at my interest. You do not mess with heart problems in football. It is a very demanding sport on your body and I only cuationed him to take it easy on his return and do not ignore any physical signs along the way. Now this has come about and I only hope that it is not another sign that God has placed before him to say wait and look at what you are trying to do with your life. Everyone knows that Sam would love to play for the Gophers and that should be good enough for us. Do not put pressure on him to return just because he feels that so many people are counting on him. Sam do what is best for you. We will all support you with your decision but football ends for all of us at some point in time and just make sure that everything is good before you return. God Bless and our prayers are with you.
Sam,I cant belive the frustration you must have going trough what you have had to deal with. I dont think, I know one day God has big plans for you and your bright future on the football field, all this will make it worth that much more when you accomplish your goals! Hang in there sam were all behind you!! Ed Hayes Bakersfield,Ca.
God wanted you to be a Hawkeye, Sam. This is your second warning.
This poor kid can’t catch a break.
the Loon has a tumor on his prostate and I check that about once a week with my #$%^&*.
Let me get this straight, this guy is 19 years old and has had heart problems and tumors? Whats wrong with this picture?
If he is ever healthy enough to play, he’s going to dominate.
C-Note Hawk….As a father of an 18 yr old son dealing with cancer, SHOVE IT.
How do you know this, wells0081? He has never played a down in college and FR LBs certainly don’t dominate in the Big 10. Are you the same person as that idiot gold04?
I graduated from Champlin Park met this guy and his brother Mike… and even sat in Mr. Maresh’s drivers ed class. They are a GREAT family and Sam will be a GREAT FOOTBALL player I know one day we’ll see him in the NFL. As long as the tumor isn’t cancer he should be safe and sound and healthy to go soon enough. We just really really want to see you play Sam and the day you get drafted in the NFL in the first round i’ll go out and get your jersey i swear. But before anything take care of yourself and dont get discouraged! it’ll be a great story once you get drafted to the NFL.
Sam, I watched you grow up wrestling and I know your father. I beleive you and your family have a strong bond, and great love for one another. With that type of family and support, you will beat this and anything else you put your mind to. forget the “kooks” and pay them no mind.
You better not show yourself you little pussy. You will get your ass kicked you piece of shit. Thats fucking low…what a surprise from the state of Iowa. Bunch of inbred hicks…
Put the link up to Caring Bridge — you are running a blog and it is your original source. Sometimes the fear of looking biased does not make good journalism.
My prayers are with you Sam. I ve never met you or even watched you play football but I cant even imagine what you are going through. And for you other idiots that cant seem to understand this situation, grow up and stay on face book where you belong.
Go beat this too - nothing, nothing will stop you! Go Sam! ! !
It would be helpful to know the size of the tumor.
If Mason were still coach, Sam would not be having these medical issues. All of this has happened on this brewster’s watch.
Translation of what the wrenabomber is saying above is “Everything that happen that is not good in the gopher football is Brewster fault.” It is unfortunate that he can get help for his obsessive hatred of Brewster. Sam has a great chance of getting better but I am afraid wren is getting sicker since he can’t even give it a rest now.

C-Note Hawk is a piss of Blank– Please do not relate is terrible post to all Hawk fans– the vast majority of Hawk fans are wishing Sam the best– there is even a thread on Hawkeyereport where everyone has posted positive comments– this kid deserves a break and we wish him luck
Hawk fan
translation dude or dudeette, please stop trying to type while getting bentover and you might be able to get it correct the first time.
I will also say the one guy posting that all Iowa people are hicks is no better than was C-Note Hawk is writing. There are a lot of good people in Iowa some even facing problems such as Sam– call out C-Note not all Iowans
Hawkfan: Thank you for pointing this out. Yes, there are many fine folk to our south. You are among them.
But….revenge will be sweet next year when we invade Iowa City. Go Gophers!!
Why are all of you Drama Queens calling this a tumor when there has been no biopsy performed on said ‘growth?’
Dr Loon,
Obviously you are only a DR in your own mind. A tumor is a growth, whether it be benign or malignant. 1. “A tumor is a lump or mass of tissue that forms when cells divide uncontrollably. Most likely if it is benign it is an osteochondroma.”
1. orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm
and a cyst, you have ruled that out, Dr Welby?
If brewter’s recruits have been good, it is a real shame that there are no coaches on staff to coach them up into Big Ten-level players. This brewster doesn’t need recruiters who have no track record with coaching on staff. He doesn’t need former recruiting coordinators…he needs REAL GOOD coaches. Count the Big Ten wins and count the Big Ten losss in 2009. The TRUTH will set us free…and, the truth may set this brewster and maturi free to go where they want to go and do what they want to do, no longer tied in any way, shape or form to the University of Minnesota football program within the next year or two…Big Ten wins could help…Big Ten losses will tell the tale. Sink or swim…succeed or fail…it’s all up to this brewter now. It looks as shakey as ever…
I thought LDS guys went on missions after high school? What happened to that? Just cuz the guy is good at football doesn’t mean its the only thing out there in life for him. Ever get the feeling he is getting a lot of opposition to do something else first? I know their family is a good one, I know some of them personally. They are religious, and at 19, good LDS guys go on missions for 2 yrs and pick up sports and college afterwards. Everyone I have met, and there have been a lot, they always come back better than they were. More mature, harder working and all around better men. Perhaps Sam is right? Maybe God doesn’t want him to play football, not yet. He might have another work for him to do first. It’s all about priorities huh?
Bill, why isn’t your son on a mission? I ask that respectfully. I know it isn’t for everyone, but what gives? Normally this would be a private matter, and I hestitate to ask it, but you’re throwing Sam out in the public arena. You can’t serve two masters. Sam, my best wishes to you for fast healing and resolution to all this, regardless of what happens with Mn sports- they’ll get along either way. This comment might not make sense to the non LDS out there, but to one who is and serious about it, it makes all the difference in the world. Do what is right, let the consequence follow. No matter what, it all works out in the end. Hang in there, we’re praying for ya!
Dr Loon,
Did you even read the article? You know, the one where it states he has a tumor.
‘Through x-ray, ultra-sound and MRI the doctors came in and said ‘Well Sam, I guess with you it’s never easy’ …They found a tumor in his left calf.”’
Just wondering… says:

Just wondering;
I am not LDS, but I do know quite a bit about missions, serving, etc. You ask Bill why his son isn’t on a mission.
–For your information, he is right in the middle of a huge mission field. Have you looked outside lately? There’s a whole lot of decadence going on without much thought of God. Having Sam thrown out into the public like this, he has an incredible opportunity to minister to the masses. Perhaps we can all be encouraged about the reality of the Savior when you see faith put to actions. I believe Sam is reaching far more people through this than he could through going to another country and pounding on doors.
Tough break for the kid I hope it works out, what’s with the old man? He likes the camera, heh?
Good luck Sam. We’ll see you carry out the flag in Sept!
Too bad a Pigeon and Bud have attempted to ruin this thread.
True, Good point. I hadn’t thought of it that way. Although an LDS mission is MUCH MORE than pounding doors overseas. It is a common misconception. I have found that the missionary is the one who benefits most from the mission, regardless of where they serve. He does have a very good opportunity to minister to the masses, ‘if’ he takes it. I really hope he does. It would be cool to see. But how do you do that? Other than by teaching by example. My fear is that the masses will be more of a deterent than anything. I’ve seen it done many times before. I am assuming by the tone of your reply you are christian so I am replying with that in mind. Blessings come AFTER the test, not before. Look what happened to Jonah. The world out there, with all its trappings will not lead him as a future father and husband, to do the right thing. And at 19, it is pretty easy to get swayed and brought down until by the time a kid that age figures it out, it can be too hard to hang on to what is truly important. That’s why I am ‘just wondering’… Not making a statement that he is doing something wrong or right. That is between him and the Lord. I’m just curious as to why this aspect of it isn’t being addressed. But I suppose the media doesn’t make money on that issue, so it doesn’t get asked. But when talking to other LDS people, the ? gets asked a lot. Thats why I am ‘Just Wondering”…
Just wondering:
Thanks for your respectful response. If you want to see someone in the spotlight with an incredible testimony that just so happens to be a football player, look no further than Kurt Warner. Truly a modern day hero.
Read his story and you will be encouraged.
Blessings.
Take your door pounding, bible beating BS to the Moonie board you ignorant peasants!
Boy, it sure doesn’t take much to get off track here!!
in what mumbo jumbo sect does a grown man of 19 have his daddy decide ‘what mission’ he should be on? i heard goofster had converted to snake handler and now we know why. Whatever it takes to recruit! Talk about a bunch of whack jobs.
Nice move UP to womens’ BB from goober FB!!!
I would LOVE to see the Vikings really throw down the gauntlet to our governor on their new stadium demands. Nothing, nothing could be better for Gopher football than to see the Vikings take a walk or do another face plant.
Go Vikings!! Go NOW!!!!
blow me loon you grubby little kocksucker from canaduh
Man, what gives on this blob?
A kid receives more bad news after a very trying time with heart trouble and the comments on here are hardly believable!
If someone is looking for distasteful rants, this place delivers. It has it all, from having an issue with someone’s religeous beliefs to heckling the reporter’s career path to attributing a 19 yr old’s health issues to the school he attends and the coach for whom he plays.
Sorry to hear life is such drag…
Go Gophers! And stay strong, Sam!

Welcome to the world that is Wayne Rendahl.
Sadly, there are no standards on this site. Any hijacking, slander, misrepresentation, vulgarity or lie is allowed. Just look at the post from Derek above. You either toe the always pro Brewster line or you get smeared and worse.
It is the basic jungle and should remind all citizens that either you have rules and enforce those rules or civilization and all the advantages of living in a civilized society disappear in an instant.
This site competes for eyeballs with many other similar sites. View these as stores trying to market a product. The owners and supporters of some of these stores (the ones they can control and intimidate) are free to come here and trash this store any time they want. And they do.
Good to see derek’s foreman let him take lunch on time today!
You were saying, bisker?? This whole thing smacks of a shameless PR move by brewster and the biblethumper family. Its a miracle!!! Sam is saved!! Water was turned to wine and tumor to scar tissue!! Hallow-wed-be-thy-name!! Whats next, he nicks himself shaving and daddy takes out another full page ad on caringbridge begging for all of us sinners to hit our knees and pray, pray, pray? Sorry, I have to go puke…
Dr Loon: That is one of the most pathetic entries I’ve ever witnessed.

LOL Wayne. I guess defending a kid against your trashing of him and his health is “toeing the the always pro Brewster line”. You are one sick individual who needs a ton of help. Feel free to show me any slander, misrepresentation, vulgarity, or lies in my posts. I’ll be waiting……
WOW, just got done reading the posts,, what a complete waist of the last 10 minutes!
derek: I NEVER post about kids…only this brewster, this macturi and this prexy b who are ultimately responsible for everything that happens in the football program. It is the sleezy brewster apologists who hijack monikers and tag lines who write tat pathetic crap. You should know, you are a lying, hijacking sleeze bag of an individual derek. Basically buzz off dude or duette, which ever the case may be. People who tell lies the way you try to do on an internet board are the worst kinds of cowards.

Still waiting….
You are a liar and both you and I know it. You are probably the dude or dudette from gopherillustrated who called my house using a brewster impersonation. You hav insinuated that I have attempted to contact you. I don’t know who the hell you are and if I did I certainly would want nothing to do with you. In fact, if I knew who you were and what your phone number was I would contact the authorities to get a legal restraining order agains you to insure that you would compeltely leave me and my family alone. You have told so many lies…you are a sad, sick sucker derek. You are, indeed a liar.

LOL nice try at a spin job Wayne. You must have our home number on speed dial. I was told working with the authorities about your harrasement was really a waste of my time. Besides, you calls are so sad they are comical. Do you drink before hand?
Oh wait thats right, someone else is calling me from a 507 number using the same tired phrases you do. LOL.
I’m still waiting for these lies, vulgarity ect. That you or Loon (depending on which screen name you are using at the time) are claiming. This is starting to sound alot like Loon’s lies about the players receiving money. I think we’re still waiting for proof on that one as well. LMAOR.
You really need to get help!
