Difficult news for Sam Maresh

It looks like Sam Maresh has another battle on his hands.

The former Champlin Park star linebacker and Gophers recruit had just recently been cleared to resume his football career after recovering from heart surgery that cost him his 2008 season. He had enrolled in school and was anticipating taking part in spring practices.

Now doctors have found a tumor in his left calf. The news was disclosed by the Maresh family on the CaringBridge.com website in a post written by Sam’s father, Bill.

”With all the focus on Sam’s heart and his lifting going so well, we were not really focusing on Sam’s left calf hurting him,” Bill Maresh wrote. ”We just kept icing and riding the bike instead of running. Sam called me the other day and said it just wouldn’t get better and asked if I would take him in to get it checked out. Through x-ray, ultra-sound and MRI the doctors came in and said ‘Well Sam, I guess with you it’s never easy’ …They found a tumor in his left calf.”

The good news, according to the post, was the bone in Maresh’s leg looks good. There is a very low chance that the tumor is cancer.

Wow. Sam Maresh has had a difficult road this past year.

Wow. This kid can’t get a break. Glad to hear it’s probably not cancer, might not be that major (cut it out and move on?). I’ll look on the bright side though: this is set up to be a great comeback story! Looking forward to seeing Maresh dominate. He’ll certainly have some frustrations to take out once he hits the field. Good luck!

So far thanks to Bird, Bud, Loon etc. for not finding something bad to say about this. Hope they understand that Brewster has nothing to do with this.

I have to wonder if this kid, who works his butt off in the weight room, may have unknowingly gotten into a bad supplement - or some kind of weightlifting supplement that may have hurt him. Not many 19 year olds have open heart surgery followed by an unrelated tumor?

the Loon says:

February 17th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

I had and still have one of those on my arm that I have had for 45 years. Sam will be OK with this now that the doctors can give it a good look and get an action plan in place.

Good luck and just take life one day at a time.

Littlebigboy, I have never said a bad thing about Sam. My only concern has been for him and his family. Football is not the end all to be all. I have always had his well being at my interest. You do not mess with heart problems in football. It is a very demanding sport on your body and I only cuationed him to take it easy on his return and do not ignore any physical signs along the way. Now this has come about and I only hope that it is not another sign that God has placed before him to say wait and look at what you are trying to do with your life. Everyone knows that Sam would love to play for the Gophers and that should be good enough for us. Do not put pressure on him to return just because he feels that so many people are counting on him. Sam do what is best for you. We will all support you with your decision but football ends for all of us at some point in time and just make sure that everything is good before you return. God Bless and our prayers are with you.

They are a GREAT family and Sam will be a GREAT FOOTBALL player I know one day we’ll see him in the NFL. As long as the tumor isn’t cancer he should be safe and sound and healthy to go soon enough. We just really really want to see you play Sam and the day you get drafted in the NFL in the first round i’ll go out and get your jersey i swear. But before anything take care of yourself and dont get discouraged! it’ll be a great story once you get drafted to the NFL.

Bisker82 says:

Dr Loon,
Obviously you are only a DR in your own mind. A tumor is a growth, whether it be benign or malignant. 1. “A tumor is a lump or mass of tissue that forms when cells divide uncontrollably. Most likely if it is benign it is an osteochondroma.”

If brewter’s recruits have been good, it is a real shame that there are no coaches on staff to coach them up into Big Ten-level players. This brewster doesn’t need recruiters who have no track record with coaching on staff. He doesn’t need former recruiting coordinators…he needs REAL GOOD coaches. Count the Big Ten wins and count the Big Ten losss in 2009. The TRUTH will set us free…and, the truth may set this brewster and maturi free to go where they want to go and do what they want to do, no longer tied in any way, shape or form to the University of Minnesota football program within the next year or two…Big Ten wins could help…Big Ten losses will tell the tale. Sink or swim…succeed or fail…it’s all up to this brewter now. It looks as shakey as ever…

Just wondering... says:

February 18th, 2009 at 11:50 am

I thought LDS guys went on missions after high school? What happened to that? Just cuz the guy is good at football doesn’t mean its the only thing out there in life for him. Ever get the feeling he is getting a lot of opposition to do something else first? I know their family is a good one, I know some of them personally. They are religious, and at 19, good LDS guys go on missions for 2 yrs and pick up sports and college afterwards. Everyone I have met, and there have been a lot, they always come back better than they were. More mature, harder working and all around better men. Perhaps Sam is right? Maybe God doesn’t want him to play football, not yet. He might have another work for him to do first. It’s all about priorities huh?
Bill, why isn’t your son on a mission? I ask that respectfully. I know it isn’t for everyone, but what gives? Normally this would be a private matter, and I hestitate to ask it, but you’re throwing Sam out in the public arena. You can’t serve two masters. Sam, my best wishes to you for fast healing and resolution to all this, regardless of what happens with Mn sports- they’ll get along either way. This comment might not make sense to the non LDS out there, but to one who is and serious about it, it makes all the difference in the world. Do what is right, let the consequence follow. No matter what, it all works out in the end. Hang in there, we’re praying for ya!

—————–

Just wondering;

I am not LDS, but I do know quite a bit about missions, serving, etc. You ask Bill why his son isn’t on a mission.
–For your information, he is right in the middle of a huge mission field. Have you looked outside lately? There’s a whole lot of decadence going on without much thought of God. Having Sam thrown out into the public like this, he has an incredible opportunity to minister to the masses. Perhaps we can all be encouraged about the reality of the Savior when you see faith put to actions. I believe Sam is reaching far more people through this than he could through going to another country and pounding on doors.

Just wondering... says:

February 18th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

True, Good point. I hadn’t thought of it that way. Although an LDS mission is MUCH MORE than pounding doors overseas. It is a common misconception. I have found that the missionary is the one who benefits most from the mission, regardless of where they serve. He does have a very good opportunity to minister to the masses, ‘if’ he takes it. I really hope he does. It would be cool to see. But how do you do that? Other than by teaching by example. My fear is that the masses will be more of a deterent than anything. I’ve seen it done many times before. I am assuming by the tone of your reply you are christian so I am replying with that in mind. Blessings come AFTER the test, not before. Look what happened to Jonah. The world out there, with all its trappings will not lead him as a future father and husband, to do the right thing. And at 19, it is pretty easy to get swayed and brought down until by the time a kid that age figures it out, it can be too hard to hang on to what is truly important. That’s why I am ‘just wondering’… Not making a statement that he is doing something wrong or right. That is between him and the Lord. I’m just curious as to why this aspect of it isn’t being addressed. But I suppose the media doesn’t make money on that issue, so it doesn’t get asked. But when talking to other LDS people, the ? gets asked a lot. Thats why I am ‘Just Wondering”…

Conservative Gopher says:

February 18th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Just wondering:

Thanks for your respectful response. If you want to see someone in the spotlight with an incredible testimony that just so happens to be a football player, look no further than Kurt Warner. Truly a modern day hero.

Read his story and you will be encouraged.

Blessings.
