Tuesday practice update
Posted on March 31st, 2009 – 6:11 PMBy Kent Youngblood
Greetings.
It’s me, Youngblood, back after a long absence. Did you miss me? Didn’t think so. I was out of the football action for a while covering the women’s basketball team play in the NCAA. But I’m back now with a few spring football nuggets. So here goes, in no particular order:
1. Brian Billick’s coming. Remember him? Coordinator of the record-setting Vikings offense in 1998 who parlayed that success into the head job in Baltimore, where he ultimately won a Super Bowl. He’s coming to town this weekend to consult with the Gophers players and staff. Billick’s relationship with Gophers offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch – he worked with Billick for four years – was the key in bringing Billick to Minnesota for the weekend.
‘’We’re very close,’’ Fisch said Tuesday after practice. ‘’I’ll spend most of the weekend with Brian. He’ll spend time with our staff, with our team. He’ll watch our offense, watch our practice, evaluate what we’re doing.’’
Fisch said he’s taken much of his offense from Billick, who should recognize what he sees when he watches practice Saturday. Billick will finish up the weekend by being the keynote speaker at the Minnesota High School Coaches Clinic.

Substance?? Just some more rah..rah..rah…..rose bowl..rose bowl..ya ya ya! Decker won’t be back, you heard it here first! Why risk a MLB future on another toilet bowl CFB season at best?
Thanks for the update. I’m thrilled with the offensive changes that have been referred to so far. I want to see a more physical offense.
Go Gophers!
Retire Maturi!!
PS Kent, I hope you can get the tools some day to get back some control over this site.
Welcome Back!
It’s really not the offense I’m worried about. This year they have the athletes, size and experience. Plus I think Fisch? will definetly be an upgrade at OC. Our offense will be one of the best in the Big Ten and MAYBE the nation.
It’s the defense I worry about. We have a thin secondary and Cosgrove. I’d take Cosgrove over any of Mason’s D coordinators expect Gibbs. They said that Cosgrove has studied defenses this last year in stopping the spread. I’m HOPING he does suprising well this year, because he needs to in order to acheive my 10 win prediction.
Decker has played in all Gopher games so far but is only hitting .321, fifth highest of the starters. He has one home run, 25 strike outs and no errors.
He is a good Big Ten baseball player at this point. I’m no expert, but those hardly seem like “can’t miss” numbers, yet. That’s a strikeout per game with not much power.
I don’t think Decker would miss playing in the new stadium. He will be there! When the Big Ten baseball season is over, he will not be able to resist that beautiful new TCF Bank Stadium and the chance to be a part of the return to Ski-U-Mah with full pads on!
It is time for maturi to step aside at the end of the 2009 season. He is the lamest of ducks.
I believe that maturi will step aside when prexy b steps down. At the age of 67 that time is rapidly approaching. Time waits for no prexy!
Thanks for the “long awaited” update. Interesting about Billick being brought in, should give the players some motivation and certainly won’t hurt coach Fisch in getting his new offense implemented.
Decker will definitely be back. He’s a football player, although he will probably be drafted for both baseball & football. Good to have options. looking forward to the spring game!
Go Gophs!!!
Decker is not going anywhere! You have the new stadium and Decker sees there is a CHANCE that the football team and the baseball team COULD be very, very, very, good next year!
gold 0-fer sounds like an idiot.

It’s hilarious when the bashers undergo a sex change.
Bringing in Billick is genious. Not only is it a sign that the coaches are smart enough to know that they don’t know it all and want to learn from a grue, but another tie to the NFL which is great for recruiting top line kids. We now have quite a pipeline of connections to the NFL. Which is great for the pgm.and bad for birdy, loonie etc.

Who is posing as me on the site? PH or Bud? Ph is well known for using a different sign on daily. Bud has a fascination with me. Scary either way.

Well, let’s see …. this wrenbawlbaby babbler is now claiming Brewster is a great recruiter and Maturi is a genius for hiring him. “There is no reason for this team not to beat Cal.”
Derek …. It is a safe bet 95% of all the pornography being posted on this site is originating from a certain meth peddler’s computer in a junky trailer in the woods around Winona.

Ofcourse the mentally challenged one is saying that, he’s just building for if we lose. And if we win, he’ll say no big deal, he expected them to win. Same crap different year.

Decker will be back. The spring game should be more fun than last year’s. I wonder what numbers Bud will pull from his backside this year…
The O will be fine, as said before, y’all better worry about the D. The current talent is suspect and the coach is a re-tread. If the D does not significantly imporve this team will win 3-4 games max and the gophers will slide back into the fooball abyss with Brewstrer joining the Wacky Wacker club. Looking for a 7 win record with a tough schedule, we will see in September. fairwell until then………………
Thank you for this site.
greg … You are an astute observer. We are going to be greatly improved on the offensive side.
It starts up front. The O line will move from pathetic to good, at least. The receivers will take a big step up and we have the best player in college football in Decker. The running back situation is vastly better. Weber should be much better and Gray is in the wings.
We made a huge improvement last year on defense but we have no apparent upgrade there this year. We need to rely on player development and coaching. I think we will be OK.

Nice to see a positive comment based on both logic and reasonable assumptions (and you didn’t have to fire anybody).

Why the one post cheap shot and run? How will the defense regress? Where’s the comparative lack in talent? You want to debate, cool. One post and run is lame.
