Thursday practice update

Posted on April 2nd, 2009 – 6:40 PM
By Kent Youngblood

Greetings.

Well, imagine my surprise when I walked into the start of practice Thursday and saw Adam Weber fielding grounders and playing catch with a baseball. No, he’s not going to join Eric Decker on the Gophers’  baseball  team. It’s all about working on Decker’s throwing motion. I wrote about it for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Weber, usually long-haired and bearded, is temporarily clean-shaven. Why? Team pictures. ‘’I might have to get a haircut, too,’’ he reports.

Coach Tim Brewster is still looking for more consistency with his offense. With Saturday’s scrimmage looming, Brewster said the defense is still well ahead of the offense. Not surprising, really.  While Kevin Cosgrove has kept much of the defensive scheme used last season, Jedd Fisch is implementing a new offense, and that will take some time to learn.

‘’We’re making explosive plays for sure, but there are inconsistencies,’’ Brewster said of his offense.  ‘’ But I like what we’re doing running the football.’’

One thing I’ve noticed is fullback Jon Hoese, who has added 15 pounds from last season. He is moving very well and Brewster said he’s doing well as a lead blocker. Hoese, who is now 6-2, 235, can even get bigger, Brewster said.

You guys flatter me with your impersonation of me in the previous blog. It is obvious that Derek has the infatuation with me and not vice versa. Jon Hoense??? another walkon from the previous staff. You would think by now that one of those brilliant stars that has been recruited by this staff would be worth mentioning. The students should be let in for free to the games. Penn State must be the only Big Ten school that still lets them in for next to nothing. Without the students vote to increase their fees the staduim would have been DOA at the state house. We have know idea what our football team will be able to do until game 4 next season. If you think we are just going to show up at Syracuse and win that game you have another think coming. By the way, we have played Syracuse and Cal in the not so near past. I thought we were going to be so much better that these games would be easily won.

I must give very high marks to the seat selection process for season ticket holders at the new TCF.

You can pick your seat to the actual seat. You can also see the view from your section and can see what seats are going in what order, day after day.

Very clear, seems very fair. I’m sure there will be “boo boos”, but it sure give a clear picture of what is available.

Kent–welcome back. I challenge you to be the Joe Dimaggio of sportswriters. Break his 56 games record and try and post 57 straight days.(dated 3-31)

Executive decision—Kent, your streak is still intact (3days). You posted twice on 3-31 which will give you credit for 4-1 and now this 4-2. Seriously, good to have you back.

What?? you don’t think games 1,2,3 will be an indicator??

Bisker82 says:

April 3rd, 2009 at 6:40 am

Tex, we will definitely have an indication of what this team will be able to do with the first 3 games. The Cal game for sure will be a real measuring stick.

I like what I,m hearing about the running game. The play action will definitely help out Weber and the receivers. Sounds like Fisch and Davis have a very good working relationship. I’m glad Cosgrove isn’t totally revamping the D. With alot of returning players we should be able to continue improving.

“Bud says— We have know idea what our football team will be able to do until game 4 next season”

According to the bashers, nothing matters except Big Ten wins. They’re already preparing for a strong start…the art of bashing is all about perception. If they can minimize wins, they can still continue on with their senseless posting.

Bottom line, the bashers are worried about this year. Success makes them irrelevant.

LivefromWinona'sTrailerPark says:

April 3rd, 2009 at 7:43 am

Perhaps the bashers are used to the Mason era of outside conference games.

Let’s take a look at 2002: Southwest Texas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Toledo, and Buffalo.

2003: Tulsa, Troy State, Louisiana-Lafayette (could Mason have been trying to get a rivalry going by scheduling them?), and Ohio

2004: Toledo, Illinois State, Colorado State

If we had a schedule like that, there would be some credibility to what Bud says. But once again, Bud gets smacked down.

Come on Bud….what are your clients saying?

What kind of sick logic infers that the success of a “walkon from the previous staff” somehow means failure on the part of recruits of the current staff?

When are you haters going to wake up and understand Gopher football is about ‘team’? Every player and every coach wearing maroon and gold are one and the same.

Jon Hoese could be a big story for our team this year. Let’s wish him the best just as we do for every one of our guys.

There is a window with each new coach whereby they show real ability to improve the program over the previous coach or the window closes and his days are over.

The fans, in their great wisdom said that the previous coach, even with a new stadium would never win more than five (5) Big Ten games in one season. With a new $300 million dollar stadium, this coach will certainly need to win six (6) or more.

It was really too bad he decided that he needed to waste two years with Dunbar’s East-West, pitch and catch, run with the quarterback, punt every fourth play offense.

I just see no way that the fans are going to sit still for a bunch of home losses this year. If the idiot Badger coach and the Maturi invited Badger Band come in here and maul our Brewster coached team in early October, the poo poo will hit the fan.

I agree with wren that their is no way five (5) Big Ten losses this year will float. You guys can blame Mason, Weber, injuries, the weather, me, Wren, Bud, Mother Teresa, Bush/Obama or anyone/anything you want. In the end, the window closes and the honeymoon is over. The virgin stadium opens and the fans start to look for the “winner” promised.

The clock ticks.

So, translation, you do not agree that this brewster needs to win a heck of a lot of Big Ten games in a short period of time????????? You don’t think Big Ten games are the be all, end all criteria for canning a supposed Big Ten gm/recruiter-tyupe??????

You are helping to drive this program right into the ground then, because without a LOT of Big Ten wins…NOTHING will have changed except for the stadium and THAT is not going to go very far for very long without LOTS and LOTS of Big Ten football wins.

The window of opportunity is HERE and the window of opportunity is HERE NOW! It will NOT last for very long.

Even the students with their cheap tickets will not support a coach/program that does NOT will a LOT of Big Ten football games. They have proved that over the decades.

IF this brewster only wins one…two or even 3 Big Ten games in 2009, thesame old groan will go up and the same sick feeling of “…here we go again…” will overwhelm any momentum moving back on campus might have given this program. It is NOW or NEVER for this brewster character to step up and drop this stupid gm/recruiter image he has embraced and to finally to start becoming a real, honest to goodness HEAD FOOTBALL COACH. Up to now he has just acted the part of a common, run of the mill, travelling salesman who can’t for the life of him seem to win many Big Ten football games. Without a lot of Big Ten Football Wins in 2009 we just may witness the beginning of the final scene of “Death of a travelling Big Ten wannabe salesman…” And…if that’s the way it goes down…he will only have himself…and his apologists to blame. :0 )

The ultimate phrase that tells it all. He moves well for a big man. That is code for we do not know if he moves well enough to block Big Ten defensive lineman. What should be coming out of the Gopher Hole is he is a dynamic player. We are not hearing that are we. Good thing we got Stommes in the correct postion finally. Only took them 2 years and a new o-line coach to figure that one out. We will not know just how good or bad we could be after the first 3 games because of the new schemes and coaches. Live picks 03/04 non conference games. How about 07/08 Live, it does not look much diferent and the Cal game was scheduled before Brewster got named the head coach. So with him in control we hand picked a 1-11 Syracuse team going through a haed coaching change and SDSU. That leaves Air Force as the game that makes this schedule so tough? During the Wacker years we played K-ST and Syracuse, Pitt. and Colorado, SDSU (when Faulk and Scott were there). Mason had Huston, Baylor, CSU(which beat Air Force), and Cal. Push that schedule towards Whackers time here and I say the results will be the same. We will have a new coach in two years.

Thanks for pointing out how irritating wren’s repetive comments are. Unfortunately, all he does when you point this out to him is to retype the same babble in his response to you. The bad news is that he may appear to be as dumb as a rock, but not as silent as a rock. Probably the best solution to this is to just scroll down past his postings and go onto the next post.

But, you dudes and/or dudettes, which ever the case may be are still talking about the message that this brewster needs to win a heck of a lot of Big Ten football games in 2009. If he doesn’t it will be time to start putting the heat on him.

You brewster apologists spend a lot of your time trying to dis me…but…the thing is that I am getting the message out there that it is key and essential for this brewster to graduate ever increasing numbers of football players, to run a completely clean football program and to win a LOT of Big Ten Football games. Nothing else matters brewster apologists. It is ALWAYS about getting the Big Ten wins. I NEVER get tire of calling for more Big Ten wins! THAT is the reason they play the games and that is the reason that they keep score in the games. This brewster is 3-13 in Big Ten play. He has GOT to pick up the pace. Dump maturi NOW! ; 0 )

Translation. Good point, I will be quiet, and keep my opinion( as far as that goes anyway ) to myself.

Brainfreeze - I didn’t even follow my own advice with the posting of a wrenbabble warning above. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
