Greetings from the Windy City

I’m in Chicago for the annual Big Ten Conference pre-season media days. With all the coaches and selected players getting ready to talk at some length about the upcoming season, here’s a look at how the collected media views 2009 football.

There aren’t a lot of surprises.

In a vote of attending media, Ohio State has been chosen the preseason favorite to win the conference title, followed by Penn State and Michigan State.

So it should come as no surprise that the media also chose quarterback Terrelle Pryor the preseason offensive player of the year. Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones was chosen the preseason defensive player of the year.

OSU is entering the season looking for a fifth straight title after finighing 10-3 overall last season and tying Penn State for the title with a 7-1 mark. Ohio State returns 12 starters from a year ago.

Ohio State and Penn State return two of the most productive quarterbacks from last season in Pryor and Daryll Clark.

It’s just my opinion, but the pick of MSU for third place seems odd. Last year the Spartans rode Javon Ringer to success, and now he’s gone. But they did finish 6-2 in conference play last year, appearing in a second consecutive bowl for the first time since 1997. they also have 15 starters back, eight on defense. That includes Jones, who finished with 127 tackles last season. he was a first-team all-conference.

Wasn’t Greg Jones committed to the Gophers before you know who showed up???????????

There was another player committed to Minnesota who switched to Michigan State after Mason was fired. Andre Anderson was his name and he will be the starting tailback for the Spartans. After he leads the conference in rushing this year, that will give you Brewster-bashers even more ammo to dump on him.

How can this be? Two studs brewster couldn’t hold after they were landed by Mason? Nonsense, everyone knows Mason can’t recruit and brewster gets whoever he wants.

Funny how the trolls left out facts like both decommitted before Brewster was even hired.

Derek - Is there contest here to see who can tell the most lies? If there is, it seems to me that a lot of people are really trying hard to win it. Since you have pointed out a lot of them, who is ahead?

Pretty soon Sid Hartmann will say something like this: The gophers under Brewster will have a good chance to win the Big Ten Championship if football this fall.

The truth is they will be lucky to finish anywhere higher than 5th or 6th place in the Big Ten.

Considering that had us at 10th last year and ended up tied for 6th, I’d say 7th to 9th is respectable. Wisconsin was picked 3rd last year. How’d that work out??

Wisconsin gets far too much respect. Their only hope is that Wofford is having a down year.

We’re all holding our breath waiting in anticipation of what “Blackie” might blurt out tomorrow (”Bowl Bound” right?) Here are my $.02 predictions, Big 10, Overall:
PS 7-1, 11-1
OS 7-1, 10-2
MI 7-1, 10-2
IA 6-2, 10-2
IL 4-4, 8-4
MN 4-4, 6-6
WI 3-5, 6-6
MS 2-6, 5-7
PU 2-6, 4-8
IN 0-8, 3-9

the Loon says:

That’s 42 and 38 with NU not on the board. I guess they must go 2-6? Seems harsh.

Derek - Just stop posting! You are a foul mouthed, ignorant punk that adds nothing.

Mason Guy - Glen Mason did an outstanding job for the University of Minnesota. He has been gone for 3 years. Get over it!

Mike - Are you for anyone or just hate life so much that you don’t support, or understand anything?

ReScooter, Glen Livet, Curious George - I do not always agree with you, but at least you have intelligence and thought behind what you post.

Fans hope that their teams do well. Coach Brewster is aware that he is fast approaching the put-up or shut-up point. My concerns are over the shuffle in Coordinators and coaches since he arrived. Maturi was wise for not talking about an extension until after this season.
Another $0.02…

OSU 6-2, 9-3

Hey Erik847…Spot-on with the posters comments. Why do the jerks even come here except to show their stupidty and to get a charge out of wizing on legs and telling people it’s rain! I think Northwestern will be higher and maybe Illinois. The Gophers will surprise a lot of people with that season, if they make it. The potential is there, but who knows? I agree that the pressure is on the Brew Crew this year.

Curious George says:

Do you take it up the stinky hole like my son? Wish I could break him of that..have tried everything. Any suggestions out there?

Erik847 - As you can see by the above posting we have a several children posting here. They must think that they are back in 8th grade. You have to be pretty immature if you think that is clever.

the Loon says:

If you guys are going to make predictions about the up coming Big Ten season, here is a hint: The number of games won will be exactly equal to the number of games lost.

44 wins will be balanced by 44 losses. If a particular team wins seven games, the other teams will have lost those seven games.

(Once a teacher, always a teacher.)

Curious George says:

July 27th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

Or, Erik847, you can do the mature thing like me and hangout all day on message boards while real men work!

Excited says:

Coach Brewster is going in the right direction with the team. Hopefully his recruits will pan out this year and in the future. We have to be excited about opportunities to play against some big name teams in upcoming years during nonconference play (even if we may not stand much of a chance in some of the games.)

As for the record for this year, let’s hope Brewster can keep improving like he did from his first year (1-11) to his second year (7-6). The big thing is to have a winning record in the big ten.

Some fans who say they are iowa fans really suck. Some fans who say they are Minnesota fans really suck. Some fans who say they are wisky fans really suck. Some fans really suck

It sucks to lose Big Ten football games and that’s the bottom line. It sucks when fans aren’t honest about what is happening.

As Minnesota fans, let’s hope for the best and if we don’t get the best let’s have the courage to say: …this sucks…”

No stinking iowa or wisky fan can do anything to help or hurt Minnesota. And no Minnesota fans can do anything to help or hurt iowa or wisky.

There is a certain amount of “it sucks…” to be the fan of any Big Ten football team…or any major conference football team.

The nfl just plain sucks all the time. Run the vikings and this wilf out of town! Never build them a stadium.

Sometimes that’s just the way things are. So, you iowa/wisky people can go jump in a lake. Sometimes you and your teams suck. Sometimes some Minnesota fans suck.

On the other hand…think of how much it would suck if we didn’t have border battle foes in the Big Ten that just plain suck! Life would be pretty boring. That would really suck…

I’m just kidding about everything other than the fact that we should NEVER build the vikings a stadium!

I’ll be very happy as well with a 5-3 conference record. We need the Oline to improve alot, and McKinley and friends to get to the QB for us to have a shot at 5-3. I’m still going with 7-5, 4-4. 3-1 at home in conference and 1-3 on the road.

David Gillreth was also committed for Mason, but that’s how it goes when there’s a coaching change people leave because they don’t want to come into an unstable program. Happens everywhere there’s a coaching change, even this year we lost guys when the defensive coordinator left for Auburn, it sucks, but it’s part of the game

I am calling it now Gophers football team goes 9-3 overall, 6-2 Conf. and finally plays in a New Year’s Bowl game! They have a star QB and a backup who is a dual threat just in case Weber goes down and do not forget about the All-American WR #7, lookout this team can outscore most opponents and if the Defense is average in the Big 10 I guarantee a winning conference record.
