Island of Misfit Toys

I never fully understood why so many people have been upset with Alec Baldwin. OK, he’s not going win any Father of the Year awards, but what exactly was his sin? He yelled at his kid because he wasn’t getting to spend enough time with her. Yeah, it was an intimidating phone message, but it’s freakin’ ALEC BALDWIN. Just being in the same room with him, as I was last night, is enough to give you a chill. I’m much more disturbed by whoever leaked the voice mail. If someone had made public some of the conversations I had with my parents when I was a misbehaving child, I’m sure I would have ended up as an emotionally disturbed adult.
Wait. Bad example.
Anyways, Baldwin was on hand to accept an award for best comedic performance, perhaps a prelude to an Emmy win. He shared a hilarious story dedicated to “Sopranos” creator David Chase, who was also in attendance to be honored.
According to Baldwin, he actually changed agents because someone promised him the move might lead to a guest appearance on “The Sopranos.” A year passed by. No call from Chase.
Then, last summer, Baldwin was to meet with a socialite in New York to talk about some fundraising efforts. After waiting at the Four Seasons hotel, he realized that he was actually supposed to be at the Four Seasons restaurant. Dressed in a suit and tie, he raced down Park Avenue to get to the correct location. By the time he arrived he was drenched in sweat. Pardoning himself from the table, he went into the bathroom, took off his jacket and his shirt, and put them under the hands drier.
Who should walk in on a topless Baldwin but David Chase?
Funny story aside, I’m wondering if I’m being too light on his faux pas with his daughter. Does he deserve a longer penance period and should it stop him from deserving an Emmy?
