‘American Idol’ comes down to David and David

David Archuleta squares off against David Cook in the American Idol finals next week, and all is right in the world with me, Randy Salas, your guest blogger for the evening.

To make way for their showdown, Syesha Mercado left the show tonight after receiving the fewest viewer votes. It seemed inevitable, especially after she lost her momentum from recent weeks with three unremarkable performances Tuesday night, but you never can be sure until the results are announced.

As I’ve said before, I like this finals match-up. Teeny-bopper Archuleta seems charmed due to his huge fan base of rabid young girls, but rocker Cook seems equally popular. Cook also has an edge to win it all based on his sheer musicality and range of style. Archuleta seems mired in a goo of syrupy ballads; when he tries to pick up the tempo, as with Tuesday’s rendition of “With You,” he never seems to find his groove. Cook, on the other hand, can turn a ballad as easily as an all-out rock anthem — and often give them a refreshing spin, even if he’s covering someone else’s arrangement.

Next week brings a  one-hour performance show on Tuesday, followed by viewer voting, and then a two-hour extravaganza on Wednesday to announce the winner — at the end of the broadcast, of course.

So what do you think of the finals match-up? Who will win? And was Syesha the right one to leave the show tonight?

When is the final season of The Shield gonna start airing?? When does Mad Men start again?? When does Damages start??

Oh my gosh! Wow!! Archuleta has to be the most boring Idol cast member in the history of the show.

I agree with Dave. He has no stage presence. Yes, he can sing amazingly, but to be an “American Idol” you should probably need to do a bit more. I hope Cook wins it all. He’s done a lot better than Archuleta the past few weeks.

Archuleta has a perfect career ahead of him as the voice in Disney muscials like Littlest Mermaid and the like.

I hope Archuleta wins so that Cook can begin a real career without being tied to the American Idol contract. Cook doesn’t need AI to become great-he’s already there.

R: Anyone who signs with 19 Recordings (RCA/BMG) is under “the American Idol contract.” 19 gets first dibs on the contestants. That includes Chris Daughtry. Some just get more artistic freedom, as he did. Some don’t, as happened with Bo Bice and Taylor Hicks. So whether Cook wins or not shouldn’t affect his initial recording career. Some lower-tier contestants get passed on by 19, such as Kellie Pickler (who has been successful), but David Cook is well beyond that. He’ll be signed by 19, as the previous top contestants were.

I couldn’t believe that Cook wasn’t even planning on trying out…just there to support his brother. Ha!

Agree with R! Would not buy a thing of Archuleta and cannot even stand listening any more, especially after “Longer” - Please! Boring!

David Cook - if Archuletta wins it would be on teenybopper vote because he is “cute” thought this was a talent contest - i had DC picked from the beginning - they need a Rocker to win DA reminds me of a big DUFUS no personality, no diversity just a balladeer -and the lip licking has to stop!

David Cook will win. He is the one with the talent and the best chances of actually doing something with an album.

David Archuletta is like the next Michael Bolton and the world does not need that.

Am I the only one that think’s Archuletta looks sleepy while singing? It makes me laugh anythime I watch him sing…

Archuleta’s CD should come with a warning label that reads like this - May cause drowsiness!

I couldn’t believe David A. made it to the finals! He does not, in any way, look or act like an American Idol! Syesha, on the other hand, was not only a great vocalist, but an exciting entertainer as well. She should have been in the finals along with David Cook! The judges, and the voters got it wrong this time!!!

Randy, thanks for the additional information. I guess we can only hope that Cook gets the “artistic freedom” he’ll need to make a great album.

As for Arch–yawn. If he can’t keep his eyes open, how can he expect the audience to?

I miss Michael, I would love to have seen him in the final.

Vicki, agree. I’ve liked Syesha since the ‘no-voice’ days. She was good. I’ve also liked DC since the beginning. I called him the ‘hair guy’ before they went to Hollywood. Everyone else, agree. I’m not a DA fan. Pretty voice. But, that’s it. And, I mean that’s it.

At this point does it really matter who wins Idol anymore, it has been proven that the winner doesn’t always win and the runner up sometimes outshines everyone. Both get contracts so who cares who wins, except those in the fantasy leagues and people with money on the line in Vegas. Cook will make a much better interview and story, everyone will be VERY tired of Archuleta, and his father, so he will have a very short career whatever happens to him unless he figures out how to be smarter like Josh Groban. Geek chic sells, but Groban has more personality in his pinky than the breathless wonder ever will.

I hope that David A. wins so that it will prove that AI is more of a popularity contest than an actual talent contest and that they will hopefully do something to end that. And what is it with Randy and Simon steering who they want in the competition? It seems that if they don’t like a particular singer more than another they will say they were just alright, even if they actually sang better than their favorites.

Does anyone else get annoyed with the big gasps of air that David A does while singing?! He drives me nuts!

Arculeta is going to win. He just gets all the chicks votes even though he seems kinda gay.

I hope David Dook wins! He is a better singer and deserves it more than David a. does! i agree with whoever said that David A.’s cd should come with a warning label that says “may cause drowsiness” because he is so BORING!!!!!

It is so annoying to watch David A sing-thats why I record it so I can FF through all his lip licking and wheezing. He is trying to step it up, and he is a good singer but not an entertainer. About the only thing he would be good for is a cartoon voice over so that nobody has to watch him and little kids will be song to sleep. David Cook should win hands down, but he won’t. At least when the show is over you won’t have to listen to Randy try to shove David A’s performance down your throat.
