The Emmys: We fill out our ballot
Posted on August 8th, 2008 – 3:26 PMBy Neal Justin
OK, OK, I don’t really have a ballot that counts, which is a serious crime. But if I DID, here’s who would get my votes:
DRAMA SERIES:
“Boston Legal,” ABC
“Damages,” FX
“Dexter,” Showtime
“House,” Fox
“Lost,” ABC
“Mad Men,” AMC
My pick: If all is right in the world, this will go a cable show, if only to serve as a wake-up call to the fuddy-duddy network suits. I’d pick “Damages” over “Mad Men,” but I’m probably in the minority. Again.
COMEDY SERIES:
“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” HBO
“Entourage,” HBO
“The Office,” NBC
“30 Rock,” NBC
“Two and a Half Men,” CBS
My pick: “30 Rock” is the most nominated comedy series in history, but this was an uneven year for the series. “Curb,” on the other hand, was even more brilliant than usual, with the great “separation” twist.
ACTOR, DRAMA SERIES:
Gabriel Byrne, “In Treatment”
Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad”
Michael C. Hall, “Dexter”
Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”
Hugh Laurie, “House”
James Spader, “Boston Legal”
My pick: Loved, loved loved Bryan Cranston, although Hall comes a close second. If Spader wins this again, I’ll eat William Shatner’s toupee.
ACTRESS, DRAMA SERIES:
Glenn Close, “Damages”
Sally Field, “Brothers and Sisters”
Mariska Hargitay, “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit”
Holly Hunter, “Saving Grace”
Kyra Sedgwick, “The Closer”
My pick: Very, very competitive race as four out of the five are past winners. I’d go with Glenn Close.
ACTRESS, COMEDY SERIES:
Christina Applegate, “Samantha Who?”
America Ferrera, “Ugly Betty”
Tina Fey, “30 Rock”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “New Adventures of Old Christine”
Mary-Louise Parker, “Weeds”
My pick: Another tough category - and another tough call for me. I’m in love with Louis-Dreyfus’s goofball character, but Parker has the juicier role.
ACTOR, COMEDY SERIES:
Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”
Steve Carell, “The Office”
Lee Pace, “Pushing Daisies”
Tony Shalhoub, “Monk”
Charlie Sheen, “Two and a Half Men”
My pick: Alec Baldwin. No contest.
SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY SERIES:
Jon Cryer, “Two and a Half Men”
Kevin Dillon, “Entourage”
Neil Patrick Harris, “How I Met Your Mother”
Jeremy Piven, “Entourage”
Rainn Wilson, “The Office”
My pick: A particularly week category, which means Piven may win again, but I’d vote for Rainn Wilson.
SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA SERIES:
Ted Danson, “Damages”
Michael Emerson, “Lost”
Zeljko Ivanek, “Damages”
William Shatner, “Boston Legal”
John Slattery, “Mad Men”
My pick: Now this is more like it. Great mix of veterans and underdogs here. I’ve been giving cheers to Danson all year and I’m not going to stop now, although I wouldn’t be heartbroken if Slattery or Ivanek stepped up to the podium.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA SERIES:
Candice Bergen, “Boston Legal”
Rachel Griffiths, “Brothers and Sisters”
Sandra Oh, “Grey’s Anatomy”
Dianne Wiest, “In Treatment”
Chandra Wilson, “Grey’s Anatomy”
My pick: Hmmmm. Griffiths. I guess.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY SERIES:
Kristin Chenoweth, “Pushing Daisies”
Amy Poehler, “Saturday Night Live”
Jean Smart, “Samantha Who?
Holland Taylor, “Two and a Half Men”
Vanessa Williams, “Ugly Betty”
My pick: Chenoweth is a godsend, although she’s underutilized. In the name of diversity, and great comic timing, I’d probably give my mark to Williams.
REALITY HOST:
Tom Bergeron, ‘Dancing With The Stars’
Heidi Klum, ‘Project Runway’
Howie Mandel, ‘Deal Or No Deal’
Jeff Probst, ‘Survivor’
Ryan Seacrest, ‘American Idol’
My pick: I like making fun of Ryan Seacrest as much as the next guy, and I promise to continue to do so, but the guy deserves props for keeping the trains running on a difficult, live show.
REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM:
“The Amazing Race,” CBS
“American Idol,” FOX
“Dancing With The Stars,” ABC
“Project Runway,” Bravo
“Top Chef,” Bravo
My pick: Idol. But don’t tell anybody.
