It’s been a rough couple weeks if you’re part of the locally-based Hubbard empire. First, a round of layoffs at KSTP-TV. Then, KSTP radio says bye-bye to Tom Mischke. Now comes news from the LA Times that Hubbard-owned ReelzChannel, based in LA, has just lost a major amount of staff. See: (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2008/12/reelzchannel-th.html)

It’s yet another example of how much the downturn in advertising is effecting us all (including yours truly at the Star Tribune). A friend of mine who’s a bit of a financial whiz told me the other night that he thinks this could get WORSE than the Great Depression….

I know many of you dear readers don’t care about the future of mainstream media. You should. You may think you can get buy on alternative media sources, but just where do you think the “alt media” gets their info? Most alternative media sources don’t have the resources or the manpower to do actual reporting. If the mainstream suffers, the whole media picture suffers.
