Island of Misfit Toys, Day 3: The Dog Whisperer’s loud message

Forget the unemployment rate, the Iraqi war and Franken Vs. Coleman. The most pressing issue facing Washington today: What kind of dog should the next president get? Fortunately, Cesar Millan, “The Dog Whisperer,” was at last night’s cocktail party. Here’s what he told me: “Whatever breed that get, that’s a visual thing. What I can suggest, the best candidate for the family, would be a mid-level energy dog. They’ve never raised a dog together. THe dog won’t know it’s coming to the White House or that he’s president of the United States. That won’t influence that dog. WHat will influence him is the common sense: How much do you know about dogs? Dogs will get that information in 10 seconds. If you get a high energy dog, he’s going to always want to go for walks, chasing the girls. Doesnt’ matter if they’re little. Those little dogs can rule the house.” OK, I’m not exactly sure what that means, but I’m sure the President will get it. If not, Cesar said he’s willing to make a house visit. What an American.
Veteran actor James Hong has played over 500 roles, including parts in “Chinatown” and “Big Trouble in Little China.” TV fans may know him best as the head waiter in that classic “Seinfeld” episode. But things didn’t start to well for him when he was growing up in Minnesota. Hong, who was born in 1929 in Minneapolis, said his years growing up here were frustrating and that when he went to University of Minnesota, the only theatre work he could get was on radio. Hong is part of “American Masters” project, “Hollywood Chinese.” It airs May 27. Also coming up on “American Masters”: A behind-the-scenes look at “Prairie Home Companion.” That is scheduled for July. Other “Master” profiles this year include Louisa May Alcott, Jerome Robbins, Joan Baez and Cesar Millan. OK, maybe not Millan.
Chris Kattan is going to India. The former “Saturday Night Live” star will be shooting “Bollywood Hero” for 10 weeks in Mumbai. In the miniseries, Kattan will play a loose version of himself, a struggling actor, who thinks he might strike it big in Bollywood. “Don’t you like Albert Brooks?’ he said. “You know, the old Albert, like “Lost in America,” “Modern
Romance.” There will be a lot of that, exploring falling in love and — because this is my journey trying to be this — I want to be an action star. I want to be a romantic person. I believe I can be that person. Not in real life. I already understand
that’s probably not going to happen, so — but I have that sense of humor of knowing that. And having that
kind of an ego, thinking I have that ego as a character and going to Bollywood and making that happen, I end up having — becoming a hero in my life as a person, as a character.” Kattan and his producers say they will film in Mumbai despite the recent terrorist attack here. If something happens, they will make it an element of the show.
