Oscars Fashion: The round-up

Yo! Claude and I get really sassy in the Monday’s paper. One last shout-out to Natalie Portman, above, in Rodarte. She’s checking out Marisa Tomei’s Versace. Nice to see the stars can’t help but give each other the once-over. (They’re just like us!)

If you want to read all of our on-the-spot observations from the night: Check out all of our fashion posts here. Hint: We loved Kate’s YSL and Angelina’s earrings, were split on Anne’s paillettes and were tickled by Mickey’s bountiful flare. There may be a recession, but at least the red carpet was glam.

InStyle’s fashion director Hal Rubenstein said it best: “Would you really want to tune in and see a bunch of women walking down the red carpet in black pantsuits?” Um, no…and thankfully we didn’t. Red carpet, we’ll see you at the Emmy Awards.

Oscars Fashion: Angelina’s earrings

Her dress is by Ellie Saab, one of her usual designer go-tos. The saturated black is quite rich looking. The Changling star knows her best look and she doesn’t go a-changing her style. However, those glowing emerald earrings make the whole outfit sing. I think Scarlett O’Hara would love them. Oh, fiddle dee dee!

Oscars Fashion: A Word about the Men

Dev Patel: Adorable, in skinny bowtie retro tux, and trying to get cameras to focus on  the “Slumdog Millionaire” child actors.

Danny Boyle: Great director, great movie, and his movie will win big, but those eyebrows! We don’t want them shaped, but a a nice grooming would help.

Robert Downey Jr.: Won’t be winning, but looks terrific in his tux with a long black tie, thickly knotted.

Mickey Rourke: His washed-up wrestler was unforgettable. For the red carpet, he’s gone all rock ‘n’ roll, with a no-tie white tux, black vest, Jack Nicholson shades, wet-look shaggy hair, necklaces, buttons, belt-based jewelry. (Who was it once said?: “Honey, you’re cute, but you’re over-accesorized.”)

Oscars Fashion: Amy Adams knows how to wear red

Amy is one of my red carpet faves. She knows what colors and cuts work for her. This Carolina Herrera ruby red number with piping on the corset is quite a knock-out. Plus the multi-colored jewel-toned necklace is gorgeous. I have no doubt that she’ll make the best dressed lists.

Oscars Fashion: One-shoulder trend emerges

Sara says: Marisa Tomei probably shouldn’t wrestle anyone in this Versace dress. She looks stunning though in the pale dove gray tiered gown. The one-shoulder thing? It’s officially a trend. It’s been on the runway (and the red carpets) for a few seasons now.

The train works here with the dramatic layering, but I’m not a big fan of the train thing… seems too bridal or too old-school or something.

Claude says: Marisa Tomei’s one-shoulder white gown has more fabric than her entire wardrobe as a stripper in “The Wrestler.”

Oscars Fashion: SJP’s gesture says look at me?

Did SJP just get her teeth cleaned (or whitened)? Is she asking you to appreciate her dimples? Is she gesturing to her husband? Hard to say! I heart her gold and “barely mint” frock by Christian Dior Couture. It’s a big look for Mrs. Big. And why wasn’t that movie nominated?
