Landing a career

Happy Friday to those of you in town. I woke up this morning panicked because I felt like there was something I was supposed to do today. Yes! Go to work!

Great story in the Washington Post about a particularly raging job market. Accounting anyone?

I’m always amazed at stories about recent high school grads who home in on a sensible, in- demand careers and land fabulous jobs straight out of school. While my friends and I had little trouble finding paychecks when we left college in the late-90s, very few of us graduated with job offers and most switched industries or went back to school for advanced degrees.

I’ll check to see if accounting is as hot in Minnesota and will ask a career counselor about which jobs are in demand in the North star State. In the meantime, share how you discovered the color of your parachute.

I am an electrical engineer and there is a similar story to accounting in this field. The last I saw, electrical engineering was one of the top five highest demand jobs in the metro area and I can attest to the fact that you can’t hire an EE even if you want to. I was fortunate enough to have a father who is an EE and explained what they do and what is interesting about it, which peaked my interest and made my decision about a major in college very easy.

I landed in my field in a roundabout way. I worked in retail and I had several small side businessess when my kids were younger and I wanted to learn how to do the tax work for the businesses. I took classes at H@R Block, was hired, worked there for a ocuple of years and I am now working full time as a tax preparer.

When I was very small I wanted to be an ‘artist’ (preferably a marker artist).

In high school I diverted to the sciences and math for awhile, then took a few art classes and ‘commercial art’ and figured out that design would be right up my (art-ish, technical) alley.

I chose graphic design for a major in college and here I am (designing, not being a ‘marker artist’). I feel very lucky to have found something I love doing at such a young age. Woo hoo!

Melissa,
Do you have an EA? I live in CA and most tax preparers need to have a CTEC (see http://www.ctec.org) to practice. Does the area you live have this?

I graduated in late 90s with an accounting degree and got an entry level accounting job at $12/hr! I am now a Accounting System Analyst making about $30/hr. I can tell you that most accountants graduating in CA will not earn enough to live on their own…most accounting grads in my previous company still live with their parents.

I saw a related article in the paper copy of the Strib late last week… something about millennials having very high expectations for raises, promotions, etc. I can’t seem to find the link here. Has anyone seen it online?
