The Sounds of Baseball….

By La Velle

At 8:20 a.m., Twin Cities time, pitchers and catchers took the field for their first official workout of the spring. Shiny new spikes click-clacked on the concrete as they moved from the clubhouse to Field 5 for warmups. The temperature:48 degrees. About 60 fans still showed up.

Chatted with a few players before the workout. Talked to Glenn Williams about baseball in his native Australia. Checked in with J.D. `The Real Deal,’ Durbin, who would have been called up last season if not for a nerve problem in his right arm. He said he’s fine but will be monitored closely the first few days of camp.

Pat Neshek made my day when I said hello to him, “Love your blog,” he said. That led to a discussion to what this blog should be about.

I’m going to keep this as entertaining as possible. I’m going to stay away from heavy statistical analysis. I’m going to try to be light-hearted and funny without being offensive. Once the regular season begins, I’ll share my opinions on roster moves and Gardy’s decisions or Cuddyer’s latest magic tricks.

I may throw breaking news up here, too, like the crack  Access Vikings staff does. My main goal is to give you even more of a taste of what’s going on in the clubhouse and front office.

Someone has asked about pictures. There will be very few because I’m not carrying a camera around! If I can get an occasional picture with my camera phone, I may include it.

Neshek agreed that blogs like mine should remain entertaining. In fact, he intends to mention on his website soon. Thanks Pat…

I’ll check back later after the workout. My fingers are getting too cold to type…..

Everytime I check back here, it seems like I get a new story. Great job with the updates. Can’t wait for another read.

I am extremely excited about this blog. I thank you and the Strib for doing it. I am insterested to see if you can stay away from random Bears and soccer comments on the side…

Count me in with those who say the opening of Spring Training is the true “GroundHog Day”… signaling the nearing end of winter.

Sorry about the “cold” weather down there, but try to get things warmed up soon, please… I’ll be there in about 3 weeks and I’m expecting nothing less than 80 degrees!

Love the blog and look forward to every spring training entry.

You’ve got an RSS feed for comments but not for your posts?!? Am I missing something?

It would be nice if I could subscribe through RSS. Aside from that, great blog; I look forward to following it.

I’m pumped. I’ve been waiting for this blog and it has arrived.

Hopefully the weather warms up by the time I get down there on March 18th to watch some baseball!!!!!!

In the cold, try typing with stretchy gloves, possibly with the finger tips cut off.

They only cost about $.97, basically the Sidney Ponson of cold weather clothing. They’re cheap, they used to be highly sought after, but now they seem to be an afterthought. But the gloves are a viable cold weather reporting option though. I have no idea if Sidney Ponson will be a viable American League pitching option. (I’m expecting Ortiz to stick. He’s a Twin killer! Why is everyone shying away from reporting this? He dominated in 2002, while beating us in the ALCS. And yes I’m completely ignoring that this was five years ago.)

Also, when talking to Neshek about what this blog’s content, did he say you should auction off old steno books from when you worked at the Kansas City Star?

Jokes. (Anyone not understanding needs to view Neshek’s online garage sale.)

Oh baseball season… How I’ve been waiting. Can’t wait to see how the pitching roster will shake out.

How great is it to not have to endure the moronic rhetoric of the Vikings bloggers (usually 220 comments, and about 15 of them worthwhile). Like the Vike’s Blog info though.

Cold in Florida? I can’t say I feel bad for you Wavelle. It’s a rough life covering the Twins…

La Velle:

Love the articles. Can’t wait for the season to start.

Who are the special assistants working with the Twins this year in spring training (Molitor, Carew…?).

Oh, spring training. My cup runneth over. I’ll be reading this blog with my morning cup of coffee every day.

What a beautiful day — the return of Twins Notes and a new blog. I’m never going to get any work done!

Please order up some warm weather. I’ll be in Ft. Myers next week.

Neshek’s ‘garage sale’ netted me a sweet game used shirt from 2003. It looks really good framed in my game room. Shek ROCKS.

Saw the reference to Ponson punching a judge in this morning’s story. Just wanted you to know that it didn’t go unnoticed. Thanks.

Anyway, what’s the word from the brain trust? Any concern that certain players (Neshek, Castillo, Punto) won’t be able to reproduce their second-half numbers from last year?

Very well done here. This is only my second day reading this blog and it’s already turning out to be almost as indispensable as BatGirl. Bravo!
