Monday notes

Got some minor injuries
Matt Garza’s neck is still sore, so a CAT scan will be taken as a precaution.
Jeff Cirillo didn’t do much today because of his sore neck.
Lew Ford is having an MRI on his right knee after feeling some pain while throwing in the outfield. Ford had surgery in January on his left knee, so the Twins are wondering if Ford was overcompensating on the right one.
Twins practiced rundowns today before hitting the batting cages.
Watched Johan Santana throw in the bullpen. He’s looking strong already.
Righthander Brad Voyles, who has no chance at making the team, has one heck of a curveball. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2003 with K.C. Has been with two other organizations and pitched in Japan since then - although his career with Fukuoka lasted three innings and 12 hits. The Twins watched him in winter ball and decided to take a chance on him.
It’s Twins-Concordia at 9:30 a.m. (CST) Tuesday on a back field.

Will Ford’s injury put him out for an extended period of time?
If so, could it threaten his chances at making the team over a guy like Durbin or Machado?
The Twins don’t think it’s serious. He may miss a few days, but it shouldn’t hold him back
IF Machado has a clue in the Outfield, do you think Ford or Tyner are gone?
Sounds like from your reports, he CAN’T BUNT??!!?? How could a guy get this far into baseball and not be a decent bunter, since he’s not a power guy???
Ok, Thanks La Velle.
Hey Ed, Alejandro Machado just came into my life this spring, too. I’m still trying to figure out what he can and can’t do…
I would guess if Ford couldn’t go, that would still leave Tyner and Kubel as extra outfielders and give either Harvey or LeCroy a better chance of moving north.
On Garza, did he get the bad neck from sleeping wrong?
Boy, I wonder what they would do without a guy who hit 260 then 230 and can’t run bases. It would be a travesty not to have Lew Ford on this team
Seriously though La Velle, can you tell me what it is about Ford that keeps him on the team? He can’t hit a breaking ball, he can’t run the bases, and he is a mediocre field player at best. Why him instead of say Shannon Steward for the same money this year. At least Stew could be counted on for a good pinch at bat.
Amen.
Ford also can’t bunt (as is the case with about 75 percent or more of baseball, it is a lost art).
Yeah, but he can steal bases!
His isolated power is still better than Tyner’s (and always has been), and if Tyner’s average drops too much, he’s worth even less than Ford. But really, it’s like arguing between hanging or firing squad.
Yep, those last two year totals of 7 and 4 hrs makes Ford a slugger compared to Tiny T. At least Tyner seems to have a head on his shoulders. But you are right Beau, though I would kind of compare Ford to a lethal injection. Especially if he is needed at a clutch time. I am convinced the only reason he is around is because the Pohlad likes hearing the crowd yell Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
I think the Twins were more comfortable with Ford as a backup last year but were surprised by Tyner’s emergence late in the year. And, being the Twins, they are going to exhaust every chance with Ford before getting rid of him. He can run and SHOULD drive the ball better than he has the last couple of years. I didn’t say hit homers, but drive.
Still, he makes a lot of mental mistakes which can’t be tolerated on a team with World Series aspirations.
Don’t rule out a trade, especially if Machado flops and they need a backup…
Concordia girls tell me the games at 1pm. I’ll go at 9:30 just to be safe.
Hey LaVelle, Seems that Ponson is screwing himself out of another chance in baseball. knowing this was amake or break year for him, you’d think he’d have his visa stuff ready to go. Seems like more of the same from him. I really want Durbin to get the 5th starter spot anyway.
Saying Ford makes mental mistakes is a real mouthful. I call them brain fa*ts
Darin, I don’t think that’s fair to Ponson at all. Everybody should realize in this post 9/11 world nothing moves smoothly when it comes to immigration.
It doesn’t even sound like Ponson’s fault from what I have read. He had an immigration lawyer recommend applying for the wrong type of visa, and looking at the description of that visa type, it seems like it would work, but apparently it doesn’t.
This guy has said all the right things in camp so far, his stuff from all reports looks good and his weight is down. I wish more people would give him a chance before writing him off.
As for Durbin, forget it. No chance he makes this rotation. He might force the Twins hand and make the bullpen if he performs well this spring, but he would have to not only have Ponson fail, which of course is entirely possible, he would also have to outperform Garza, Baker and Perkins to make the rotation.
