Twins-Yankees - New York Overkill

Posted on March 1st, 2007 – 1:20 PM
By La Velle

It’s the Yankees’ home opener, so they stopped at nothing.

Players lined up on the field for introductions. Four F-15’s did a flyover of the stadium, and there were pre-game fireworks. I guess when you don’t win a World Series for awhile you’ve got to try harder.

Look at the Yankees’ lineup: Damon, Jeter, Giambi, A-Rod, Matsui, Posada, Cano, Cabrera, Mientkiewicz. What a way for Carlos Silva to open the spring.

The Twins: Span, Punto, Cuddy, MVP, LeCroy, Kubel, Redmond, L-Rod, Casilla.

Home run Johnny Damon, second pitch.

That Yankees lineup is just sick. It will actually be interesting to see if Dougie baseball can start hitting again seeing as he’s gonna be protected by the ridiculousness that is the the entire rest of the Yankees lineup and he should see some hittable pitches. I always liked Dougie and wish him well.

Any update on Torii’s fingernail?

Love the Blog. Keep it up.

Yankees lead 3-0 after one inning. After Damon’s homer, Posada had a RBI single and another scored on a force play.
Oh well, at least all three outs were on grounders……haha!

Two-run homer by Giambi on a bad 1-2 pitch. It’s 5-0 Yankees, and Silva is a mess….

nothing new………..why did we give this clown (arguably the worst pitcher in all of baseball last season) 4.3 million again?

Does anyone know if it’s possible to listen to this game online?

Justin…no radio at all today either the Twins or Yankees.

Kevin Slowey pitched a scoreless third, but gave up a hit and a walk and needed a diving catch by Kubel to stay out of trouble.

La Velle says:

March 1st, 2007 at 2:26 pm

RBI single Jason Kubel. It’s 5-1

La Velle says:

March 1st, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Slowey just got through the fourth. Struck out Damon with what looked like a change up, got Jeter to fly out to right but walked Giambi on four pitches. A-Rod singled to left, but Kubel threw him out trying to stretch to second. Slowey hit 90 on the gun, but his pitches have enough movement to be effective. Like him….

SethSpeaks says:

So… Slowey walked two in two innings… I wonder if he has ever done that in his life!?

El Guapo says:

The Twins should have scheduled “Yankee Killer” Baker against NY today.

Trevor Born says:

It still sounds like he did well, good to hear.

JimCrikket says:

Not a bad first outing for Slowey, but maybe the best “news” I’m picking up from these updates would be Kubel (a) making a diving catch, (b) throwing a guy out trying to stretch out an EBH, and (c) getting an RBI single. Not bad for the guy penciled in as the DH this year. Now get him the heck out of the lineup before he hurts himself.

Geez..you guys are getting 15-20 MORE inches of snow up there? You know, flights are available to Fort Myers…

Sorry…those flights have been cancelled. :P

Not a good start to the spring for Silva. Really like what I am hearing about Kubel. He can rake at the plate and his defense/arm is very underrated. Who else is pitching for the Twins today LaVelle?

How did Wang look today? Future #1 in the Bronx. Philip Hughes pitch??

Paul says:

March 1st, 2007 at 3:30 pm

I’m in North Dakota and I had a class canceled that hasn’t happen in the 3 years I’ve been up here.

Ed says:

Silva had no sink on the sinker? How did any of his pitches look…besides meaty??

SethSpeaks says:

March 1st, 2007 at 3:33 pm

I didn’t realize that Choate and Venafro are essentially the same pitcher.

Gil Velazquez certainly didn’t help his cause to make the team today, huh? Two straight boots followed by a strikeout-looking.

Joe says:

March 1st, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Don’t you all think Kubel should start in left, over Rondell White?

Matty says:

March 1st, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Not until we’re sure that knee is COMPLETELY healed. The turf is too tough on bum knees. His bat is the most important thing.

Nicky says:

March 1st, 2007 at 4:20 pm

Wang looked good, kept inducing groundballs with his sinker. If only Silva could throw at 93-95 with his sinker like Wang, then he wouldnt be giving up free round trips like jetblue.

Hughes pitched today and the NY media is already calling him “Little Rocket.” I personally didnt see that much to justify the hype as he mainly threw his fastball, and had trouble locating his breaking and off-speed pitches for strikes.

Hey we’ve been getting pics in the strib for a couple weeks. Then finally we have a game yesterday and we get no pics. I hope the photogs didn’t take off once the games started!

hey La velle! after the first 8-10 inches of snow it doesn’t matter anymore. All roads here in southern minnesota are now closed. I hope to see you guys on the other side!

La Velle,

My invite to spring training must have got lost in the mail. But please know that I am snowed in here in North Dakota, however, I did go outside today and throw 30 snowballs, and if the team needs me, It will be a few days before I can get out.

Slowey … looked pretty good. Looked way better IMO than the “next coming of Roger Clemens” that the Yankees trotted out there. Geez, what was his name again?

Thought Choate looked really … okay. Nice to see another lefty reliever out there.

Kubel was … a nice surprise.

Silva :-( … not so surprise.
Not so nice.

LEN3-
Do you think if LeCroy (or Ken Harvey for that matter) has a good Spring, combined with Fords injury that he cold be a possible 5th bench player with a little power?

RyGuy says:

March 1st, 2007 at 8:43 pm

Is anybody else sick of all the LeCroy talk? Gardy was right about LeCroy: He has the build and speed of a manager…and thats it. We already tried the LeCroy DH project… Remember this is a guy who clogs up the base paths, sucks at 1B, and allowed 7 stolen bases in one game behind the plate, making Frank Robinson cry.

Why are F-15’s flying over the stadium?!! Why display those death machines?

Nobody should be aloud to militarize the beautiful, bucolic game of baseball.

And, who paid for the jet fuel for that stunt? George Steinbrenner? No — you and me.

Those planes do two things only: waste my tax dollars and kill people. Keep ‘em out of baseball.

Michael Blaine says:

You know what, I have always loved baseball — it’s an unadulterated pleasure and a refuge — so death and war should be kept far away from it.

Is that too much too ask?

If the Yankees are going to bring flying death machines onto the scene, we fans need to push back: to the greatest degree possible keep our game pure from the malevolence of the outside world.

Michael Blaine says:

March 1st, 2007 at 11:30 pm

And if morons like you Wess really believe that those planes keep Americans safe from something — if you buy into that big fat lie that leads to needless death and impoverishes our nation — I don’t want to hear about it.

O.K., O.K. calm down…

I’m going to make this plain and simple. THIS IS NOT THE VIKINGS BLOG, THIS IS A TWINS BLOG. Let’s not digress into sniping and flaming here, like that other blog does. I will stray from the norm at times and dip into things outside of baseball, but I’ll try to keep things light-hearted and I hope you will too!

For instance, I’m ticked that the Twins will be in New York when the Police are playing at Xcel. Who will go in my place?
