Sidney, Silva and Slowey

There’s indications in Twinsland that Sidney Ponson has been out of camp for the last couple of days because he was able to find a country to pick up his visa. If so, he probably would pitch on Monday, but instead of staying in Fort Myers to throw in a B game against mostly minor leaguers, Sir Sid may head to St. Petersburg to face the Devil Rays. Stay tuned….
Carlos Silva was shaky on Thursday, but the coaching staff saw a sinker that was, at times, better than the one he threw most of last season. The Twins view that as a jumping off point.
They will try to get Silva to relax and believe in his talent again. If you’re tense, you’re gripping the ball too hard and the sinker won’t sink. Silva’s confidence level is as important to his rebound than anything.
Kevin Slowey walked two batters in two innings. I received a couple of e-mails from fans who were overwhelmed by the news because Slowey is a control maven.
The Twins feel Slowey was a little nervous on Thursday - his first major league spring game - and should be better the next time out. Still, Slowey showed good stuff, especially a 90 mile an hour fastball that has very good movement. In fact, both Derek Jeter and A-Rod took quick glances at the Twins dugout during their at-bats against Slowey - normally a sign that the hitter thinks Slowey has quality stuff.
