Posted on March 4th, 2007 – 10:15 AMBy La Velle
Boston: Julio Lugo, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Varitek, Manny Ramirez, Coco Crisp, Wily Mo Pena, Eric Hinske, Alex Cora, David Murphy. Pitching: That self-promoting, egotistical, headline hogging, I’m-jealous of Dice-K already Curt Schilling
Twins: Bartlett, Punto, Batting Champ, Cuddy, MVP, Rondell, Kubel, Denard Span, L-Rod. Pitching: The best pitcher in baseball.

I like the way you set the lineup. Batting Champ, MVP and best pitcher in baseball
Someone said Big Papi was making the trip across town today. I guess they were wrong.
Not bad, I like how they are getting Span in there with some of the regulars.
Can’t wait for your in-game notes.
Altohugh it is on TV today!!
So LaVelle…tell us how you REALLY feel about Shilling. ![]()
Why do the Twins insist on playing L. Rod so much. Is it because we have no better option at this point? He was useless last year. I hope they find someone better to fill the utility role than him this year.
Dude, Castillo has a sore back. Machado has a sore shoulder…
Good grief, can anyone on this team pitch anymore?
Asked for a pitch count from the first inning. The pitch counter was on her phone during inning and, `thinks,’ it was 26. This is the crap I go through in spring training….
Looks like Santana started off bad.
Has he been throwing pretty much fastballs?
It feels like this game is two hours old already.,..

LOL
We still got Nathan! Man, I love being able to watch baseball right now thanks to WFTC. I’m jealous. I want to be there.
Santana: Two innings, one earned run, THREE walks, two strikeouts. Obviously, his control was off. He threw all his pitches, including a strikeout of Wily Mo Pena on a nice change up.
Now Nathan has walked the leadoff hitter. It’s an epidemic!
Why so may walks today?
Do you know how the MRI’s went for Lew Ford and Machado?
I feel bad for you right now. You have to sit there and watch Scott Baker get knocked around.
When will the Twins piching have a scoreless inning?
I guess it’s still Spring Training.
Baker ![]()
Ick. Poo. Be gone.
Unless they are looking for a full-time BP pitcher, Baker has to go. Even the strikeout he got was a belt-high fastball.
They should have traded him when they had a chance to.
Baker is all over the place. He did spin a nice curveball for strike one on Ramirez and eventually struck him out. Then he gave up a two-run single to Coco on the first pitch….
Final stats for Baker from the inning:
Baker: 1.0 inning 6 hits 5 runs
La Velle - What should we be more concerned about at this point:
The hemorhaging in our opponets box score, or the goose eggs our A-lineup has been putting up?? I say the former…
I think Baker is pretty much played himself out of a starting job. Yikes.
Gardy actually felt the effort was better today (I guess he was ticked off after Saturday’s debacle). He said Baker pitched better when he finally started spinning curveballs up there instead of heaters.
Notebook will be jam-packed tomorrow, with news on Castillo, Casilla, Machado, Reyes, Heintz, Ponson, Hunter, Trevor Plouffe and others….
Can’t wait. At least some good things happened today with Rincon, Nathan, Venafro, and Cummings having good outings.
Will Plouffe be playing with the Twins tomorrow since they have two games?
Plouffe is playing the B game
This is why we have spring training. It’s still REALLY early guys and gals. I’m not worried about a thing yet. I’m just glad I got to catch some ball this afternoon! Looking outside at the piles of snow and then seeing the Twins on TV make me think spring!
Excellent job covering everything La Velle!

I agree 100%. I’m not worried at all yet since this was our first week of games in a long time. However, I think it is natural to get a little mad when you see your team play bad — even if it doesn’t mean anything.
As for the Plouffe information, I can’t wait to see what he does tomorrow.
Also La Velle, would there be any chance if he pay well that he could be the backup?
Do you know how soon the Twins Spring ball will be on FSN or any other national TV? Being in Virginia, I can’t wait for the regular season to start so I can watch on the dish.
Baker is a young Kyle Loshe. All promise, no delivery. Get rid of him as he wants and while you can, Twins!
The Twins will play on TV this Wednesday against the Pirates on FSN.
Agreed that the Twins record and the game scores mean nothing.
As for Baker, he is starting to remind a fan of some of the marginal types the Twins hoped would pan out in the rotation during the ’90’s, but never did.
I’m sure, however, that given the scarcity of pitching of any caliber around the MLB, they could get something in a trade.
Would someone ask me how things have fallen apart for Scott Baker? This guy was really, really good when he made his MLB debut couple of years ago. He was gold against LA Angels of Anaheim and then againt the White Sox that year. I thought he was on his way to what would be a great career when he had a great game against NY in April of last year.
It’s obvious his confidence is shot.
Nothing is working.
It seems to me that when pitchers or rookies in general come out of AAA or AA on fire they have tons of confidence and not very many people in the bigs know them. Someone like Baker can come out and blow people away. His pitches have crept higher and higher in the zone and he just doesn’t have any wicked movement. It seems to me that he wants a spot on a rotation and I’m sure that’s frustrating to be with a team like the Twins where he might get a sniff but he’s more like the seventh or eighth starter.
I think we should trade him to someone like the Reds or the Pirates, where he could possibly start. Even if we don’t get much in return it makes our overall picture a lot more clear.
I think we are still looking to add infield depth I can’t say I’ve poured over any other teams three deep depth charts but there has got to be some Punto type of player on somebody’s team that is worth a flier on a Scott Baker.
I think there is much more to work out in this still too early scenario, of our staff. But I will say, that Baker is not doing much to help his status. Our coaches have their work cut out for them. But as you all know it is early and hopefully some cream will rise. I imagine the competion will excellerate in the next week. Should be interensting to see who ends up starting for us. I just hope that what we have is enough to compete. Let this be a notice. It’s time to step up guys.
Go Twins!
Baker is the next Adam Johnson.
Had to add a “b” since I saw another “bob”
Saw Lewwwwwwww is looking at more surgery. How badly will this affect his trade “value”, I know it is early, but should we start getting concerned about out utility position?
Travis T out there still right? Lew can hit the ball to the fence and Travis can’t but I think TT might be a better defender with at least better range. He can play all three out field positions. You add in Kubel and you’ve got five out fielders. Kubel might not be able to play there the entire season but Denard is also out there as possible depth.
I really think Baker should be traded. Wouldn’t you rather see Garza or Boof out there instead of Silva. I loved Silva when he was on a few years ago…I never liked his as the third starter. I can’t say Ortiz and Ponson make me super excited either. I think Santana, Ortiz, Ponson, Garza, Bonser is a fun line up. I’ve said it on La Velle’s blog before and I’ll say it again that would make me more interested in season tickets.
