Twins-Tigers: Hunter hit in mouth, needs stitches
Posted on April 26th, 2007 – 12:04 PMBy La Velle
[UPDATE] Torii got smoked in the face with a 2-2 pitch from Zack Greinke in the second inning. It looks like the ball deflected off his mouth. Not good…
[UPDATE]: Hunter was taken to a local hospital to have his mouth examined. That’s all we’ve been told for now.
[UPDATE]: Hunter is headed back to the Dome after receiving three stitches for a laceration on the inside of his lip. He’s classified as day-to-day. In a way, the Twins dodge a bullet. Then again, the last thing they need is another player in day-to-day mode.
Rondell White is having an MRI exam on his right calf as we speak. We should know the results by the end of the game.
Gardy is hoping that the team calms down and starts playing smarter baseball. They better, because they’re headed for a showdown with the Motown Tabbies this weekend and could be run out of town if they don’t.
Luis Castillo ran on the field before the game and could be activated for the Detroit series. The way the Twins luck is going, he’ll need another month.
It’s too early to panic (some e-mailers seem ready to set themselves on fire) but it’s one thing to get beat and another to give games away, and the Twins have been giving games away ever since they swept Seattle - and they weren’t playing their best ball then.
Lineups:
Royals: 1. DeJesus, CF. 2. Grudzielanek. 3. Teahen, 2B. 4. Sanders, DH. 5. Gload. 6. Brown, LF. 7. Gordon, 3B. 8.John Buck, C. 9. Pena, SS. Pitching: Grienke
Twins: 1. Casilla, 2B. 2. Punto, 3B. 3. Mauer, DH. 4. Cuddyer, RF. 5. Morneau, 1B. 6. Hunter, CF. 7. Redmond, C. 8. Kubel, LF. 9. Bartlett, SS. Pitching: Boof.
Joe C. will cover the team on the road trip to Detroit and Tampa Bay. My goal is to get Comcast to get their tails out to my house and fix my internet so I can blog more often.

Nice job, Nick. And the boneheaded baserunning continues.
just one more run that we didn’t score.
what happened?
Punto walked. Got thrown out trying to steal. Mauer walked. Cuddyer hit a single Mauer to 3rd. Morneau ended the inning for no runs for us again.
oh……i guess we can’t fault him too much for being aggressive. MVP needs to drive in that run.
Boooooooooooo (f?)
If I didn’t know any better I’d say the Twins have lost 3 of 4 against this lowly squad this year.
Was it my imagination or was Jason Tyner our best hitter for about 5 straight days last week? Now he hasn’t played in 5 of the last six games???? What in God’s good name is going on here???
I know you’re handcuffed when you have to catch Redmond (leaving either Tyner or Kubel in left), but that’s flat-out poor management to leave Tyner out of the lineup this much when your offense is struggling. I do agree Kubel should play everyday, but Tyner sits while the offense struggles?
And what about L-Rod—you can’t tell me he wouldn’t be a better option at 3rd base for some of these games….all he does is hit the ball hard when he has the chance to play….honestly….this isn’t panic mode, but how about some common sense?
Booooooooooo (f!) …just struck out the side after walking two
Based on the radio broadcast, though, Punto either thought it was ball four or simply was out so far that he didn’t even slide at second. Sounded like another baserunning brainfart.
Not sure what Anderson said to Bonser after walking those two guys in the second, but he ought to say it more often… two Ks immediately followed.
La Velle and Joe C. should get involved in the conversation during the game….would be fun!
So, just exactly where would you have Tyner playing today… and in who’s spot in the line-up? You know Redmond’s going to catch a day game after a night game.
OK, well… I guess it’s a moot point now. Tyner in for Hunter.
Yeah moot point, sadly….Twins have to retaliate!!!!!
I already said it didn’t make much sense for today, but the point is, if you did a better job of getting him in the lineup over the weekend or earlier this week….maybe, just maybe, he proves himself enough that he keeps himself in the lineup…..either via DH (Reusse’s right, it’s a joke to DH Redmond everyday) or left field.
well hopefully Boof can throw a shut out. Maybe we can score 1 run somehow with our offense.
I don’t know how funny that is to have Queen’s “We will rock you” playing in the background this particular inning…especially the part about “Blood on your face, big disgrace”
Alexi, Alexi!!! Wow. Boof better find someone’s ribs.
I would rather have L-Rod in the game then that Punch & Judy hitter Castilla
bases loaded one out = no runs..AGAIN
Any word on Torii? Seriously hurt? All I’ve got is MLB Gameday right now.
Sounded on the radio like he was hit almost square in the mouth. Didn’t sound good, but hopefully it won’t be more than dental work.
The Twins are what, one more injury away from using their pitchers as field positions?
Wow seriously!?! - what are they waiting for? Sweeney? Grienke hit bartlett that inning too. Doesn’t Boof have to hit someone now?
I think so Bobb, but Twins pitchers, if you look at their recent history, do not like getting into beanball wars.
I’ve never understood that….someone’s got to go old school on this.
If Torri is down we are in trouble. He was one of the guys that was actually doing something with his bat.
You just cannot, mistake or not, hit one of the teams best players in the mouth and not expect something back. Twins need something like that right now to get some freakin fire into them anyway.
Jason, can that be attributed to our pitchers or Gardy? Example of a coach who protects his players is Guillen yelling at his pitcher for not beanballing someone.
Best bet is that the Twins start bunting again. Some teams hit homeruns to jumpstart the big O, but we’ll take a couple of bunts, a walk and maybe another hit batter to bring one home.
Apparently Boof’s retaliation strategy is to walk every hitter.
Now Redmond gets hit by a backswing?
Gardy’s going to really panic now.
I think Gardy would do it, if the League wasn’t all for throwing everyone on the field out of the game when something happens. Boof seems like the guy who would, but maybe that is why he just walked the bases loaded. He just couldn’t hit them.
I have to get a radio, this is crazy. Gamecast is just not enough today.
Jim, keep with the updates like that.
True. In order for Boof to hit someone, he’d have to actually be able to throw the ball where he’s aiming.
Bobb, spring for the audio package in mlb.com. It beats GameDay.
Boooooof works out of a jam.
I wonder what the record is for number of innings in a game where neither team had enough offense to score a run when both teams are starting AAAA level pitchers.
On an entirely different subject, was anyone else bothered by the fact that Ponson piched just barely good enough to stay in the rotation? I mean if they are going to lose at least sid should have the common courtesy to get blown out of the rotation.
JimCrikket - does it look like Red is oK? not really sure I want to see LRod back there. could have another LeCroy in DC incident.
Best Twins broadcaster quote of the year from Jack Morris after Tony Pena, Jr., hits Redmond in the back on a big follow-through swing:
“Wow. A swing like that deserves a fastball or slider right in the knee cap.”
Scoreless, bottom 4. mlb audio rocks…every game for 15 bucks.
boof has thrown 80 pitches after 4 innings walking 6. Horrible numbers. I guess that beats giving up those long balls.
I admit it’s a little annoying, the Ponson thing, especially considering he was bailed out by a double play and bad baserunning….but Ponson wasn’t the story last night…he’ll be gone soon enough.
I love BlackJack, we could use a guy like him on this team. Torii used to be that guy. probably would be today if he wasn’t spitting his chicklets out.
Boof’s about done for the day - this would have been the inning to plug someone, had he not given up a leadoff hit to Grudzielanek. It’s inexcusable not to retaliate here - these guys have been kicking their tails all week, and the Twins seem incapable of any response.
Does anyone know how I could listen to MLB Audio at work, yet do so quietly enough that it doesn’t bother anyone else, without me using headphones? I can’t stand GameDay and even more than that I can’t stand not knowing what is going on with the game. It’s killing me…and I need suggestions.
Way to go Boof! Walk 7. That’ll teach ‘em!! not.
You think Boof goes out if he survives this inning?
Adjust your volume….i’d go with headphones personally
did you guys notice on gamecast there is a photos section. It shows hunter. evidently he started charging the mound but had to sit back down.
This Twins rotation is really really not very good. Now you can bi$ch and moan about the offense not producing and it is ALL true but man-o-live this staff is bad right now. If Johan isn’t an almost guaranteed W (like he hasn’t been the last 2 times out) we are in big big trouble. Schedule doesn’t get any easier, time for the guys to NUT up. Shake things up Mr. Ryan it is almost May 1…
Boof is done for the day I think. 108 pitches in 5 innings is not good but he didn’t give up any runs so he has kept us in the game. Now we see if the pen can keep them shut out and maybe we can sneak in a run somehow.
You got to love Boof K-8 BB-7 but still can’t plunk anyone.
Wow. Still want Casilla with the Big Club all year, Gardy?
Whew. Good news about Torii, at least. That could’ve been much, much worse.
Hey Bobb - How do you view pics in GameDay?
I was using ESPN’s Gamecast.
Maxwell, the reason Johan isn’t an “almost guaranteed” W is the lack of offense. “Shaking up” the pitching staff right now would be like kicking your dog because the cat ripped up your favorite chair.
Remember last year when the Tigers
out-scored the Twinks like 25-1 in D-town- I forsee the same thing this weekend!
Come on Gardy- light a fire a little sooner this year buddy!
Boof Stuggled but kept us in the game with his abilty to k guys but he has to have better control next time out.
33-1 last year in Detroit.
This reminds me of last Friday night….close game where you need long relief and you go to Perkins right away…..this guy isn’t established enough to be put in during these close-game situations….I would much rather Guerrier!
Where can I get box scores of yesterday, the day before, etc?
LOL Gardy read my mind….actually props to Perkins for striking out DeJesus! Still would’ve started the inning with Guerrier.
I’m sick of Gardy’s excuses about injuries and LaVelle reporting about it. The whole team is injured from shooting themselves in the foot.
I think Gardy has to get himself kicked out of a game to try to fire up the boys.
Hey Bill-
Go to http://www.mntwins.com
Now we’re talkin Larbo!!!!
Or put a fastball in someones ear hole- Is that mean?
Hi guys!
So, is Tori going to be out long, I wonder? Hope they didn’t screw up his beautiful smile.
Yeah Gardy’s overdue for an ejection….20 games in and no ejection is pretty amazing, actually.
finally Sander’s hit by pitch
This has been a terrible game for Alexi Casilla.
Did the benches even flinch when Sanders was hit, or was it so expected to happen that nothing happened as a result?
I like Casilla, but perhaps a bit more time at AAA would be prudent.
That is, if we can ever afford to do so injury-wise.
Has anyone else been unable to get the Twins feed on MLB Audio? Only the Royals feed works for me now…
I lost the Twins feed on mlb.com, too, Jason. I had to do some work and when I got back, I didn’t have any feed. Funny, the KC guys weren’t all that excited about that inning-ending DP.
Even the KC broadcasters are saying Brown trapped that ball of Bartlett’s. Can’t buy a break these days.
Ryan Levebre just said we got screwed on Emil Brown catching that Bartlett liner. He said it was clearly trapped.
Another Cy Young candidate in the making thanks to the Minnesota Twins lineup…
If Greinke could pitch against the Twins more often he would win the Cy Young award. We sure have a way of making pitchers look good.
Imagine that the announcers could see it from the booth, but the ump runs out and gets in good position and misses it?
Jason you read my mind
gmj, the announcers had the benefit of replay which, apparently, clearly showed it was a trap.
We knocked Greinke around pretty well on Saturday when we faced him. He is, however, a pitcher with major upside. But these days, you don’t have to be very good against us.
That, and as an umpire I can attest, you don’t always have the best view, even when you try to get into the best position….sometimes easier from above, you know?
Wow….how about some great objectivity from Denny Matthews, saying that Grinke had a “decent” outing today, because of the fact that he struggled with his command early.
Twins broadcasters would have said Grinke pitched “Outstanding”….(Bert’s favorite word), it is amazing the refreshing honesty you get with other broadcast teams (although Gladden and Morris are awesome)
True, Jason. Then again, the KC broadcasters pretty much gave up overhyping their talent about 1988.
Hate to pile on, but a hilarious line by Matthews at the end of that inning….he says softly…”So Gobble cruises through the middle of the Minnesota line-up, which has been totally ineffective the last few days”
I love the older commentators who tell it like it is….that is fabulous!!!!!
I call a tyner walkoff HR.
Nice going, Bert.
Anyone know how close that Kubel ball was to going out?
With these two teams, this game may never end.
I mean… how absurd is a a game that takes the teams 3 hours and 10 minutes to get through 9 scoreless innings?
so our long relievers are Perkins and Guerrier and they have both already pitched. So who do we use if we need to go 15 innings today?
I know you’re supposed to have the advantage as the home team in extras….but I don’t feel good about this one….hope I’m wrong.
Neshek used to throw up to 3 innings at Rochester I think. But frankly, if this goes scoreless for 15, Gardenhire and Bell ought to have to go out there and pitch… or just call it a tie between two totally impotent lineups.
too bad Sid only went 6 innings last night and we had to use so many guys out of the pen.
Morris and Gladden ripped the Royals for not sending Gordon….funny stuff. The both just laughed for a few seconds….then Morris goes “You gotta send him there, right Danny”
Gladden: “Yeah, I’d say so”
Yeah. Guess it was only a matter of time before Sid started getting blamed for things going wrong in games he isn’t even participating in.
Now this you can’t make-up….The Tigers have pushed Nate Robertson back to tomorrow night to face the Twins, meaning the Twins will face two lefties this weekend….that is unbelievably funny!!!
Yeah. Gosh. I wonder why Leyland would do that?
What this team needs is a rainout. Where’s Crash Davis and his sprinklers when you need him?
Hello everyone.
Nate Robertson was pushed back a day after the Tigers-White Sox game in Chicago was rained out. That means the Twins will face seven left-handed starters in 11 games.
Cuddy entered today batting .194 against lefties.
So enjoy as we watch these teams continue to ruin happy hour…
Maybe the Twins should just make a trade with the Royals and get Sanders and Grudzielanek for this weekend, at least they are righthanded and Grudz certainly can play third.
Thanks for the updates on Hunter too, La Velle….that was awesome!
Couldn’t Hunter play tomorrow if he just has a couple of stiches in his mouth?
JimCrikket not blaming Sid just wondering why we seem to use every available arm every day. Today may be the only time that our relievers pitch more than a few batters and taht is only because this game will never end
I was just going to say perhaps Morneau should’ve had the day off and L Rod play first….then he singles off the baggie!
Well, they’re talking about a 70% chance of rain in Detroit tomorrow night so maybe they’ll get a rainout and a chance for the arms to get a rest and the hitters to spend one day where they don’t have to think about how badly they stunk the place up.
I call a trade to get Castro back. He’s batting .083. We could use some of that power in our lineup.
Hallelujah! Redmond finally “smelled one”!
What a great game….couldn’t have scripted it better, lol!!!
I find it funny that here we have the Dome and our weather this month seems like it’s been ten times better than anything East of us….
Irony commands all. ![]()
is that all everyone does is whine, whine, whine!!! you all must be fair weather fans!! like them when they win, whine when they loose!! we never will have expensive players like the yankees, so enjoy the team we have, and if not, then dont watch!! we seriously could have a worse team!! money shouldnt rule the world.
? don’t know where that came from, Denise. Pretty sure we’re all big Twins fans here.
Sad to say that a team NEEDS a home win against the Royals on getaway day, but we needed that one.
Stop whining, Denise.
It doesn’t have to do as much with complaining about being a poor team as it does with playing to one’s ability. I actually believe we have talent on the team, but when they’re not playing to their ability, it stinks to watch them.
Charlie, this habit of using a ton of relievers all the time is a recent thing with Gardy…he used to like to change pitchers at the start of an inning when possible, and we didn’t really even use Romero as a LOOGY. But there’s a lot of peer pressure, I think, to drift toward the LaRussa model of overmanaging.
Too bad.
the only reliever I don’t understand what we are doing with is Perkins. Everyone has been screaming to use him as a starter but Gardy seems to not want him to pitch to right handed bats. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. We did not use Crain or Neshek today so they should be good for tomorrow and Reyes should be able to come in and walk somebody tomorrow too.
They should move Tori Hunter to clean up and move Michael Cuddyer to 6th. Let that settle in for awhile. The Twins cannot win consistently until they find another starter. That was a glaring weakness from the get go. The division is to good this year and just to balance for the Twins to pull off a division title like they did last year unless they can find a top prospect lerking in the minors or make a block buster trade.
Matt, I understand the thought, but Torii’s performance in the cleanup spot over the years has been horrendous. Cuddy’s had a couple tough games, agreed, but as things stand now, even if Torii continued to hit in the cleanup spot, there still wouldn’t be anyone on base in front of him.
I also understand concern over the rotation, but seriously, over the past 6 games the entire staff has given up 24 runs over 58 innings. That’s an ERA under 4 runs per game. I personally don’t think that Ponson, Silva or Bonser will be around be next year, but when the only game we won over the past five was a shutout (in 11, at that), I’d say the focus better be on the offense.
So LaVelle,
If Comcast gets their tail out to your crib, do you think they’ll battle their tail off to get that interweb fixed?
i believe the twins will be no better than 500 this season - nick punto had a once in a lifetime career season - and will never duplicate that. he is a utility player no more no less. Barlett is a below average major league shortstop - if he can hit 275 it will be a shock…and he should not be defensive liability as he has been. if he can’t hit he should not be a liability as he is defensively. rondell whitw who is a defensive liability has to hit and he can’t stay healthy - his best days were 4 years ago and he is broke down. opposing pitchers are making adjustments with morneau, cuddeyer and mauer. mauer has been the only one to adjust. bullpen which is the strong suit is going to be worn out by the all star break if santana and ortiz are the only ones who can give us 7 plus innings. time to take the rose colored glasses off - they are average and i cant believe a gardy managed team has made so many mental errors and defensive errors. finally the signing of the current free agents on this club have made the twins thinner then ever. no offensive help off the bench - and if redman is the best dh he is a 250 hitter with no power. and he is a defensive liability as well. seems like they thought highly of themselves and it showed in spring training and it is showing now that they are average at best.
Has any team faced as much left handers as the Twins? Except for the upcoming game I don’t think any of them were pitching out of the order. Seattle didn’t face a lefty until Santana. That is ridiculous.
It is bull carp to hit one of the best twins player playing today in thwe mouth but Torri Hunter has a big enough brain not to charge the picther. If and thing like what happend to Kirby Puckett I will hurt someone.
I am not high on Ponson either but I actually don’t think the pitching has been the problem. It is obviously hitting and there is a fear that some of the Twins had career years last year and won’t duplicate. The same could be said with a number of the Tigers too. All in all, I think the Twins will hang in there this year and scrape their way to staying close. Will it be enough? I don’t know but losing series to the Royals is not the way to go. I like this team but really wanted them to add Frank Thomas like-veteran to sit at the cleanup spot. They need more pop. I do think that Cirillo will be a big help when he gets back. He adds a professional bat to the order. Lets hope the Twins can find some fire for the tigers series or it could be ugly.
La Velle that’s really starange because Cuddy hit lefties pretty well in the past.
14 games this season in which the Twins have scored 3 runs or fewer (and remember that includes a series with the Mariners, the woeful, woeful Yankees (worst era) and two series with the Royals). Frankly, it is astounding that we are still above .500!
I don’t know what game the press were watching but they claim that Tori’s beaning gave the Twins a spark and they were mad. I’m trusting the bloggers on this one. From the chatter here, it doesn’t sound as if the beaning did much to light a fire in the belly of the Twins. Even Guerrier said he didn’t mean to hit Sanders and was wondering why Sanders didn’t walk straight to the bag. That’s just too weird.
Why can’t we move Punto out of the number 2 hole? Is his wife baby sitting Gardy’s grandkids?
The upshot is that the Twins won, which was great. The relief pitching held up nicely. The Twins won in an ugly fashion but they won.
PS-Thanks La Velle for always keeping us up-to-date on the status of the players. The Blog Dogs are grateful.
PS 2: CharlieMurphey you’re a prophet! You said maybe Boof could pitch a shutout and the Twins could get one run. (Of course, you didn’t mention that the Twins would take 11 innings to get a run or that Boof would throw a 108 pitches in five innings, but hey you still nailed it! KUDOS!)
[…] 27 Apr 2007 Twins finally win one in 11 innings Posted by Ryan under Mike Redmond , Rondell White , Jason Tyner , Jason Kubel , Jason Bartlett ,Torii Hunter , Boof Bonser , Twins Torii Hunter got smoked in the face with a pitch and Boof Bonser walked 7 batters, but the Twins endured to end their 4-game losing streak. Skippy Tastes Better than Jiff : unfortunately I also asked Lavelle a week ago if he was scared about all the lefties we were going to be facing and we certainly have not looked good against them this year. We have been pretty quick to jump all over Silva and Ponson this year but Silva has held his own and Ponson has actually kept us in games for the most part. If we can’t score runs it will not matter who we have on the mound. Hopefully we will play some good defense behind Ortiz and he can get ground balls tonight.
A 9.00+ Era is not keeping you in games just becuase the Offence scored a bunch of runs in 2 of his starts.
In one of Ponson’s starts Gardy said that he left him in too long and he got shelled. I am not saying that he is Santana or even Ortiz at this point. What I am saying is yesterday it took us 11 innings to score 1 run against what has consistantly been one of the worst teams in the league. We can not expect out pitchers to shut teams out every game. Most of us would agree that if our team ERA for the year is somewhere around 4 or lower we should normally be competive. Look up the definition of a quality start and you will find that for the most part our starters have done pretty well. Our offense has made some average starters look way too good this year.

Which game was he in too long because he’s only pitched past 5 and 2/3rds innings once. If he can’t go that long we can’t have him in the rotation. Sidney hasn’t had one QS yet and no he hasn’t Kept us in games that’s what Bonser did yesterday he was having trouble but MADE pitches we he had too sidney hasn’t (to steal a line from the tyner people)Shown us anything at all his best start was agianst the Royals and even that wasn’t great.
so Paul how many runs did Santana give up in his last start? If he can’t do better than what he did that last start we should really send him to the pen and call up one of the kids don’t you agree. None of us would ever consider anything like that becaause Santana gives us a quality start nearly every time out. The difference is Santana is our #1 starter and Ponson is our #5 starter. Right now Ponson is doing better than almost anyone that the Yankees are sending out to the mound with their $200 Mill payroll. If Ponson does not show improvement I agree that his days with the club will be numbered but right now he is not the reason we are not scoring runs.
I agree with charliemurphy, by no means has Ponson pitched well, but if the Twins would provide some run support things would look a little different.
I know alot of us just want to say lets bring up the young guys ( I would like to see Slowey) but with out any run support you put extra pressure on the pitchers to be perfect. I think you give Ponson 1 more start and if he blows that then he’s done. Cuddyer and
Morneau have been hitting poorly for a week and 1/2 and no one is screaming to get ride of them why because we know baseball is a long season of ups and downs that’s what make’s it great.
Tell me which one of the yankee’s starters aren’t better than ponson. Santana has 3 years of SUB 3.00 eras behind him Ponson has 3 years of 5.00+++++++ era tell me how they should even be mentioned in the same paragraph. The fact is sid is done he’s been done fore 3 years. Saying it’s just the 5th spot in the rotation is is not a acceptable answer that was the excuss they made for Juan Castro it’s just the 9th spot in the lineup well it’s still a spot it mattter’s and if aren’t preforming and you don’t have a track record of being good in the last couple of years or you don’t have ponteinal why is the player in that spot? If Baker was doing this would you say the same thing about him?
The Yankees have been calling up their ACE kids for the past few games and they have been getting shelled. They have some guys on the DL right now and that has hurt them but they are in a real tailspin right now. If you could not see that I was being sarcastic about mentioning Santana I am sorry that you missed that. If this were Baker doing this he would have about 1 more start before they went to plan B. I think Slowey and Garza can both have huge upsides to them and if and when the need arises they will be called up. Like I have posted many times on here before it is very rare for a team to make it through the entire year with the same starters the entire time. During Spring training a lot of people were calling for Silva and Ponson to be gone right away and saying that Ortiz needed to be on a short leash. Silva has been ok and Ortiz has been more than adequate. If Ponson can not give us 6 innings with about 3 runs on a steady basis he should be gone. Maybe things will be better once we hit interleague play and the pitchers can hit for themselves.
