Still no Mauer; lineups

The Twins are waiting for Joe Mauer to tell them that his left quad is totally healed and that he’s ready to return to action. I still think he’ll be activated in time for the White Sox series. At the worst, the next road trip.
Luis Castillo is batting .375 against Tomo Ohka.
Torii Hunter is 2 for 3 off Ohka - but the two hits are homers.
Bartlett will probably be in the lineup on Sunday. Chris Heintz, too.

LaVelle, any indications that this is it for Ortiz as a starter? Do you think we’ll see Slowey there June 1, with Ortiz in the pen and DePaula or Miller down?

That is very good reading. I must point out that Slowey has no problem mixing pitches and Baker’s problem was height of pitches, not selection. I think the Garza situation is unique and you can’t win in the majors throwing 90 of 100 pitches as fastballs.
That said, it’s just growing pains. Garza will be up this year, I’ll bet.
As for the Super-2 status, I just did some research while my ears were ringing from the homers. Super-2 status is avoided right around 2 years and 130 days of service time, and the Twins are well out of that danger zone. Free Kevin Slowey!
Man, Kubel continues to get no luck.
La Velle, good to hear you on the bandwagon, even though you have a tougher spot than us to say so! Hopefully our rotation will get another jolt come June 1st!
Also, La Velle, can you do a piece on just how unlucky Kubel has been this year, so that normal fans can SEE that he has been, and not just look at fools’ stats.
Ah, also, forgot; Are the playoffs calculated in to service time La Velle? If so, he could easily get to 130 days this year still with one playoff series. Just a thought/question.
Sean,very well written work .I brought up the same topic regarding the June first /Slowey situation in Joe’s blog Wed.We as fans sometimes tend to over react and not give the brass any credit. I’m sure this was their thought process over the last week to ten days.
Your obeservation regarding the Ortiz one year deal making the money the Twins might lose to Slowey in arbetration a wash, is spot on target.I eagerly await the arrival of Kevin Slowey.

Wow. Guess Kubel got unlucky SIX times tonight.
I was at Friday night’s game, and Kubel had some very nice shots, including at least one where he was robbed of an extra-base hit. I agree that with time, he will be an incredible boon to whatever team has the patience to wait for him.
That said, I am sort of tired of people claiming that Kubel is the victim of bad luck, and that is all his problems can be blamed on. Face it, luck is a huge part of baseball. A player’s line drive percentage can be as high as it can be, but you won’t get any hits or any credit unless he can also convert occasionally and hit those line drives to the parts of the park where the other teams’ fielders aren’t waiting.
0-for-6 isn’t just bad luck. There is also a certain amount of skill to hitting the ball to certain parts of the park. Kubel’s consistent habit of hitting his line drives directly to fielders shows his lack of skill in that area. Can this be improved through anything other than experience? Probably not. However, the question people should be asking is this: Is a contending major league club to get that, or is it something that can be gained in AAA?
Inexperience is starting to show.
