Twins Send Slowey to Rochester, Call Up Cali

Posted on July 5th, 2007 – 4:46 PM
By La Velle

After watching the bullpen get used up for a couple days in advance of a double header in Chicago, the Twins decided to call up lefthander Carmen Cali from Class AAA Rochester.

Righthander Kevin Slowey, whose ERA rose to 5.84 after giving up five runs over 32/3 innings on Thursday, was sent back to Rochester.

Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson said the club wasn’t considering a move until Slowey was knocked out early on Thursday, which put more pressure on the relievers.

Still, it looks like a good time for a step back, Slowey has given up 13 homers in seven starts, a pace that would obliterate Bert Blyleven’s MLB record of 50 homers given up in a season.

Cali, who impressed during a stint earlier in the year, is 3-0 with a 2.93 ERA in 20 games at Rochester. He will join the team Friday in Chicago before the doubleheader begins.

Why don’t the Twins try out a 4 man rotation for awhile. It worked in the old days and the Twins don’t really have a #5 pitcher. Think Santana could get an extra 7 starts or so. He would definitely win the Cy Yound then

Not surprised by this move.

Slowey’s control has been awful so far…for a guy that is known for pinpoint control, it’s been horrible to date. We knew his secondary stuff was questionable, but his FB is getting hit all over the place because it’s tailing right over the plate and into a hitter’s swing.

He needs to live on the corners and develop better secondary stuff. Sending him back down to AAA will hopefully improve that.

If guys like Silva or Baker were struggling right now, it’d be a tougher choice…but that’s not the case.

Craig says:

Slowey to AAA for more seasoning is a good idea. The Twins pitching is way too thin, especially the starting pitching.

Let us hope Mr. Ryan saves every good arm he has, and doesn’t waste any trading for a hitter.

Cincinnati Reds Watch:

The Reds continue to lead all of major league baseball with 120 home runs. Their 32-52 W-L record continues to be the worst in baseball.

I am pulling for the Reds to finish the season with this best/worst combination. Talk of them trading away Adam Dunn has me concerned.

As long as we’re going for pitching, maybe a package of Morneau and Mauer for Harang and Lohse?

Intriguing. In other words sweeten the deal?

Sources: Santana wants $25 mil a year from Twins

Industry sources say that Santana’s agent, Peter Greenberg, has floated a $25-million-a-year pricetag in informal discussions with the Twins, at which the club has balked. Indeed, for a club with a $75 million payroll, logic says the Twins won’t be able to afford him. — NY Daily News

tctwins says:

July 5th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

OK, now that we’ve got that figured out, how ’bout we get ahold of McHale and try to get some deals for KG worked out.

tctwins,

Mind reader.

hoof_hearted says:

July 5th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

Will Yanks pay for Santana?
Ah, yes, the $200 million question that is likely to loom rather ominously for the Twins over the next year: can they find a way to keep Johan Santana from becoming a free agent after the 2008 season and going to the highest bidder? Or, to put it another way: how much do you think the Yankees would pay to have the best pitcher in baseball take the mound on Opening Day as they christen their sparkling new ballpark in 2009? — NY Daily News

Craig says:

I think it would be a good thing to look for a pitcher from Cincinnati.

If a pitcher can do fairly well on a pint-sized playing field like what the Reds play on, who knows what they could do in the Metrodome.

Krissy,
Oh, I see. Thank you.

Craig says:

July 5th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

I hope the new stadium is not another launching pad. The field dimensions are tiny.

I was hoping for 395 ft. down the lines. 450 ft. to the power alleys, and 495 ft. to strait-away center.

Teams that plan on miniaturized playing fields rarely win.

Craig says:

July 5th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

That should read play on, but plan on also works.

BD says:

July 5th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Unfortunately, Slowey’s not ready to pitch up here - he can’t split the corners on every fastball & his other pitches aren’t good enough to keep MLB hitters off balance. They’re just waiting for him to make a mistake with the fastball & then they’re hitting it.

oh and a comment about sending slowey down..
i agree with it in terms of we need another guy for the bullpen for this weekend.
but slowey and garza have proved they can pitch in the minors.. they cant really do a whole lot more down there.
you need to let the kids learn up here in the big leagues. so i hope they bring him up after the allstar break is over.

Twins Fans! It is time for Punto and LRod to make their way out of the minny apple and head to NY. Bring on the young sticks from AA/AAA and let’s see someone hit the ball out of the infield on a consistent basis! We have the arms to stay in this race so it’s all about the lumber now.

Cincinnati Reds Watch:

Update -

The Reds blasted two more home runs tonight. They continue to lead all of baseball in total home runs, now with 122.

Unfortunately, they won the game. Their W-L record now stands at 33-52. On the bright side, that record is still good enough to retain the worst W-L record in baseball.

Cheer on the Reds to finish the season with the highest number of home runs in baseball, and the worst W-L record in baseball.

Nora says:

July 5th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

So much for HRs equalling wins. Reds are proving that theory wrong.

hoof_hearted says:

July 5th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

if reds had better pitching itd be a diff story

Craig says:

July 5th, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Yes, if any team had better pitching, it would be, for that team, a different story.

Nora says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:21 am

Just about every team has problems one way or another. HRs do not make up for them most of the time.

Skippy tastes better than Jiff says:

July 6th, 2007 at 2:17 am

I know this might be bashing a moot point into the ground, but I don’t think the theory is that HRs equal wins, but that without power hitting and hitting in general, teams do not fare very well. The Twins have a very respectable team ERA, but are struggling to keep their heads above water. The Reds are frequently trying to win games 11-9; 8-7, etc. and that gets a bit tough after a spell.

Craig says:

July 6th, 2007 at 5:54 am

I think Terry Ryan has a plan. The plan is to sign Santana.

After the 2007 season, only Santana, Nathan, Morneau, Mauer, and Cuddyer will have large contracts.

With a budget around 75 million, Ryan has allowed himself plenty of funds to get the job done.

Santana will have a new contract before spring training 2008. Unlike the Joe Mays contract, this one will be insured.

put_a_football_helmet_on_koskie says:

July 6th, 2007 at 8:06 am

Not a bad plan Craig, but I think the twins need to and will sign Hunter to a 5 year deal, and in doing so they’ll get Santana to stay for a bit less. If Hunter leaves, Santana might too.

Mike wants wins says:

July 6th, 2007 at 8:53 am

You really think they’ll spend $25MM on one player? How about “only” $20MM? I hope you are right Craig, but I just don’t see it happening.

Big Jon, Esquire says:

July 6th, 2007 at 8:59 am

Why is Nick Punto still on this team?

coyotetom says:

July 6th, 2007 at 9:14 am

I think Punto is one of the better defensive 3rd basemen in the league - also one of the worst offensive in the league. I think he is about a push - saves enough plays on defense to make up for the plays he does not make on offense.

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 9:18 am

Craig
What about 2009? If they re-sign Santana for let’s just say $20 mil. and the payroll is around $80 mil. the Twins are going to be stuck wtih a lot of Punto’s and L-Rod’s

Santana-$20
Mauer-$10
Morneau-$15
Cuddyer-$12

That is already almost $60 mil. that doesn’t include the rest of the pitching staff or any other position players. And if the sign Hunter to his $15 mil that he wants that is the whole payroll. I see no way the Twins will sign Hunter and there is absolutely no way they can afford Santana unless he takes a HUGE discount and plays for around $15 mil.

TT says:

July 6th, 2007 at 9:19 am

Actually, it doesn’t look like the Twins will need a 5th starter until July 21st.

coyotetom says:

July 6th, 2007 at 9:26 am

Burnt Asapargus says:

HEY LA VELLE! In other team news, Sidney Ponson is still apparently a Twin! When you go to the main Twins page, a random Twin pops up in the right side of the page under the “Meet the Twins” section. Today, I got to meet Sidney! His profile is still there. Please tell me he isn’t a Twin anymore! My heart can’t take it! ;)

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 9:58 am

Coyote Tom
Cuddyer will make more because Mauer is already under contract for that year and Cuddyer will be in arbitration. When you look at how much Cuddy is making now and project that he will continue to hit around 25 HR’s and 110 RBI’s he will be making more than Mauer in 2009. That’s just how the system works. The longer you have been in the league the more you make.

Can’t get into the Twins forum AGAIN! What a joke it has become. I’ve been looking for an alternative site for us, but not much luck yet. For now, during play by play, we could just post comments at this City Pages URL:

http://blogs.citypages.com/sports/

I’ve been going thru posting withdrawal during Twins games. Just post in the most recent Twins blog on that site. Much less traffic than here (for now). Still continue using your real name.

All the other Twins message boards I’ve found are really clumsy, with folders for each new message (similar to ESPN boards), which I really dislike. Posting in the comments of the City Pages sports blog is the closest I can find to the now defunct Strib Message Board.

Matt Dahl says:

I forgot to mention, when you make your first post, check the circle “remember me.” You will also have to enter an email address, which can also be “remembered.” It appears your first post will have to be approved, but it should be speedy after that. Any time the Strib forum is down during Twins games, or any other time, we should post there. My first post is under the Frank Thomas picture (most recent Twins-related post).

I didn’t realize Kubel was from SD that’s pretty interesting. Did he grow up there or was he just born there? I’ve never heard mention of this so I guess I will assume he grew up elsewhere.

Josh says:

July 6th, 2007 at 11:14 am

jama,

I’m stationed at Ellsworth currently and spend too much time at Deadwood — one of the dealers at Cadillac Jack’s is from Belle Fourche and has never heard of Kubel. Considering the size of the town, I’d have to say he was just born there, or else this guy would have to know of him at the very least.

coyotetom says:

It is my understanding that he left there in jr. high.

Gamer says:

Speaking of Jason “the savior” Kubel it has been a little over a month since Gardy put him in the lineup as the everyday LF.

He is now hitting .242 and is on pace for 13 HR and 64 RBI. (ESPN.com)

It is time that Terry Ryan pulls a Bobby Keilty moment and trades him before the rest of the league finds out he cannot play.

All we need is a LF, 3B, or any body who can DH. So our optoins should not be limited.

Doug Munson says:

July 6th, 2007 at 11:51 am

Gamer:

I don’t know who thinks Kubel is a savior, but how many games has Kubel actually started since Gardy made that statement.I don’t think Kubel has started more than four or five games in a row in the last month.Yesterday was a classic case.He hits a big HR the day before and even though he is hitting leftys better than righties Ford gets a start and goes 0 fer.Kubels been nothing spectacular for sure, but he’s only got a full years worth of ML at bats. The Twins aren’t going anywhere, they need to find out if Kubel can recapture the swing that made him a very hot prospect three years ago.

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 12:20 pm

Josh,
I spent too many nights and dollars at Cadillac Jack’s. It’s my casino of choice.

I had never heard of Kubel being from Belle Fouche and I am of similar age. I also played baseball so I figured he must have moved. At least Rapid City still has Mark Ellis up in the Bigs. You have to root for somebody when your State doesn’t have any major sports!

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 12:28 pm

Has anyone seen the lineups for today? Just curious what it looks like. Is Gardy going to go all out for both games or is he going to give a couple of guys a game off?

Kurt says:

July 6th, 2007 at 12:32 pm

I think KUbels coming along nicely. Really think about it he didn’t hit any dingers the first month of the season and now he has 6. They claim he’s hitting with more confidence and it seems like he is. I think right now he’s playing at a level of .250 and 20 homers as a second year player. I’ll take it.

Saloon #10 is a good one but I can never seem to get a seat there. I do like there 1 deck Black Jack though. You also can never go wrong with the Silverado. It can get a little crazy in there but it is normally a good time.

Anyway I was reading on Yahoo that Castillo isn’t sure he will be able to play in the double header today because of his hand and his legs. If that is the case they should just let him rest until after the AS break.

Why not Cirillo at DH? Or Redmond? Or the batboy? Let’s bring Carew out of retirement he hits better than Tyner.

Austin says:

July 6th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

Redmond will be catching the game tonight. On days where there is a doubleheader there are always going to be questionable lineups. That is just the way it is since you are trying to balance giving the right guys a game off and what not.

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 12:55 pm

The players can rest on Sunday night. They should be putting the best line up out there for the next 4 games. If they don’t win at least 2 of these games the fire sale with begin.

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Austin- You are missing the point. The AS break is coming up and if these guys can’t play 4 games in 3 days followed by 3 off days they shouldn’t be in the Bigs. I can understand switching the catchers but the rest of the guys aren’t running marathons there standing out in the field. The players today are so pampered it’s unbelievable.

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

To another point does anybody know why the Double Header wasn’t scheduled for Saturday? It seems like it makes a lot more sense to have it tomorrow rather than today when the Twins just flew into town. Just curious.

Austin says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

Jama - Any even average baseball fan will tell you that the majority of times in doubleheaders, the teams will split. I guess you could see there is only a 33.3% of this happening, but for whatever reason, it happens more often than not. There is no need to start complaining about lineups for a doubleheader. Some people will look for anything to cry over.

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

If the point of the game is to win, why would you not want the best players out there. Also the White Sox are basically throwing a rookie in game #2 wouldn’t that be the easier game to win?

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Austin-
I think you like to complain about others just to complain what do you think of that? HA

jama says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Well I’m out good luck to the Twins and I’ll check back in with you fools later.

Austin says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:06 pm

If that is the case then why wouldn’t you throw Baker out there. It is because you want your pitcher with more big league experience going against their better pitcher. I guarantee you there will be changes in the lineup from both teams other than the catcher. My point is don’t act like we are doing something that is completely ridiculous when everybody in the league does it.

Hanging Curveball says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

Even a sub-par lineup might be able to take game 2, so we’ll be treated to LRod, Lew and LNP at the bottom of the order. It will strike fear into the rookie on the bump.

He is not a savior but he has a high ceiling, much higher than Lew Ford.
He should have been in the lineup yesterday but Gardy rewards him with his big homer by putting him on the bench and playing the old rightie vs. Leftie.

straight odds for those mathematically challenged. 2 wins 25%, 2 losses 25%, split 50%, chances of Tyner starting DH on any other MLB lineup 0%. However insert the phantom for Tyner the lineup looks pretty good.

baker strong in first inning thus far

This just in, Ozzie has forfeited the remaining games of the series based on the results of the first inning. He is quoted as saying “We just can’t compete with the Twins, there is no sense getting our players hurt. The Twins are the greatest team in the history of organized baseball.”

punto F-7…hit the ball on the ground

It’d be way cool to get into the chisox bull pen early on game one, hey?

mh says:

well 4-0 is a great start.. lets call it a game and start game 2

mh says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

did punto hit a HR?

hook10 says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:41 pm

mh, yes he hits one a year and has already managed that feat of strength for 2007,, fly ball left field, again, but bartlett continues to hit and twins score in the second

yeah, im trying to find a decent site to upload the game.. MLB is terrible, CBS sportsline is the same way.
it showed punto up and the score 5-0..

but yes, 5-0 .. call it a game

I may just quit watching if Tyner continues to DH. If you don’t stop spending time/money, what incentive does TR have to improve the team. Really - a guy with over 1000ABs and no HRs is your DH? That is the best that the greatest GM in history can come up with?

So much for the no hitter.

hook10 says:

mike, we can all rejoice as ronDL and ken harvey will be here after the all-star break with their power to save the season and make terry ryan look like a genius for not trading any of his prized young pitchers for a rent-a-hitter

What happened? Is Baker up in the zone? And when will Cuddyer start hitting again?

hook10 says:

July 6th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

baker k’s last 2 batters stranding a guy on 3rd, good thing. minimal damage 5-3 . he better keep it together, the bullpen will not be much help today im afraid awfully thin out there…and mlb gameday sucks as advertised

CharlieMurphy says:

I hate MLB blackout rules for games. If the game is not carried locally there is no reason for it to be blacked out on the MLB package. If I lived out of market I could watch the game but since I didn’t fly to Chicago today I can’t follow the game other than online. At least I can watch Garza go tonight.

CharlieMurphy says:

68 pitches for Baker in 3 innings does not help our bullpen out either.

Sure looks like Ozzie told his guys to let the twins win this one!
