Postgame: Tyner Does It

Posted on July 28th, 2007 – 11:20 PM
By La Velle

Jason Tyner has warned us that he was going to hit a homer one of these games, and he did on Saturday.

“I think it surprised a lot of people,” Cleveland pitcher Jake Westrook said.

Tyner’s shot in the third gave the Twins a 1-0 lead and ended his homerless streak at 1,220 at-bats, the longest active streak in the majors.

“I’ve hit balls a lot better than that at the Metrodome,” he said. “That ball would not have been out at the Metrodome, but I’ve definitely hit some balls harder than that.”

Tyner thought the ball hit the fence, so he was digging hard toward second when he found out it was gone.

“Between second and third it was kind of seeping in,” he said. “I was kind of excited so I couldn’t get into a home run trot.”

Gardy bet Tyner that he would wear a Texas A & M shirt if Tyner went deep (Gardy’s a Longhorn). And Johan Santana told us that he was betting Tyner that he would hit one during interleague play before Tyner got his first one, so it was a relief.

The ball landed in the Twins dugout and was retrieved by Pat Neshek, who immediately had it authenticated for Tyner.

“My biggest fear was that Neshek would have it up on his website before the game was over,” Tyner said.

With Tyner now taken care of, guess which major leaguer has the longest homerless drought now?

Luis Castillo at 612.

“Ha, ha, ha,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said, “passing the torch.

The Twins got a big scare in the eighth when Casey Blake’s blistering foul liner hit Scott Ullger on the left side of his jaw. We can see into the visitor’s dugout from the pressbox, and everyone converged on Ullger as soon as it happened. It looked scary.

But Ullger left for the trainer’s room under his own power and came back with a ice pack on his jaw to watch the final inning.

“I look like I’ve been hit by Mike Tyson,” said Ullger, whose face was starting swell.

He knows he’s going to be sore on Sunday, but he wasn’t seriously hurt.

Santana was rather wound up after the game while talking about how poorly the team has played and how he wants to show them that it’s not time to throw in the towel. I respect his resolve, but the hill may be too steep.

“My biggest fear was that Neshek would have it up on his website before the game was over,’’ Tyner said.

That’s a priceless quote.

Good to hear that Ullger seems to have sustained no serious injuries. That line drive sure made it to the dugout in a hurry.

A terrific game by Johan and the first dinger for Tyner. The dig at Neshek was classic, too, and I’m guessing that’s a clubhouse that could use a little humor to break the ice right now. A 3-2 win is hardly a sign of resurgence, but it sure beats being on the short end of a 10-0 drubbing.

Kudos to Tyner…

Even though he gave up the runs, I love the fact that Santana is a warrior and tells Gardy to sit down… that’s good old fashioned baseball… a pitcher that gets to make the call on his night.

Bonser I bet wishes he had that ability, and that option. Anyone notice that in the two starts before Bonser’s blow out yesterday how he sat on the bench pouting? Not very professional.

Maybe Bonser needs to be sent down for a couple of weeks to grow up? !!!

What a shock that another Twin now has the streak for most games without a dinger. And if by some act of God Castillo were to hit one, am sure Nick the Stick would be next…and the list would keep right on going.

La Velle says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:19 am

Ahhhh…Nicky homered in Anaheim this year….

Off the top of my head, I was wondering when Omar Vizquel last went deep

La Velle, I wonder when the Twins will trade for him. Twins seem to have a knack for having these players on the team, LOL.

John says:

What about Scott Podsedick? Has he homered this decade yet?

John, Pods went deep for the first time in a while against…of all teams…the Twins.

I can’t remember who served it up though.

Podsednik’s homer this year came off Rich Harden of the A’s in April. The previous one was last July off Scott Baker.

As soon as it happened, I had this vision of Terry Ryan, struggling with the decision of whether to buy or to sell at the tradeline. In desperation, he looks up to he heavens, beseeching the Lord for a sign…

And as Tyner’s ball slips over the bullpen wall, he says “Oh! Well. That’ll do.”

Hey, don’t forget Scotty Pods hit a walk-off home run in the ‘05 World Series. So has he homered this decade? Yes, yes he has!

how does TR let wiggington go to houston for wheeler. if TB wanted pitching don’t you think the twins had more to offer. will TR give his rationale for not making that deal? Wiggington was atleast a 1.5 year fix for the 3B woes or if buscher sticks, he could play 2b when castillo is unloaded. I continue to be frustrated with TR’s inability to improve this team.

Sean says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:26 pm

I don’t know why everyone wanted Wigginton so badly. He’s not good enough for TR to want to make a better offer, and calling up Buscher is more in line with what the Twins are all about anyway.

i agree with sean. the way some people talk wiggintons like the second coming of babe ruth or something

Omar Vizquel has two HRs this year. He hit one June 7 and his last one came June 25.

The only regulars (200+ AB) with no home runs this year are Luis Castillo, Juan Pierre (437 AB this year), Cesar Izturis, Aaron Miles and Reggie Willits.

Scott says:

August 2nd, 2007 at 12:52 am

I’m a cubs fan and Izturis definately wasn’t a regular this year he’s spent most of it behind Ryan Theriot and now we sent him packing to the Pirates.

Your site is a refreshing change from the majority of sites I have visited. When I first started visiting web sites I was excited by the potential of the internet as a resource and was very disappointed initially. You have restored my enthusiasm and I thank you for your efforts to share your insights and help the world become a better place.
