Twins-Indians: Pre-Game

Posted on July 29th, 2007 – 10:59 AM
By La Velle

Jason Tyner has been inundated with text messages since hitting, `The Homer,’ last night. The best one came from the girlfriend of one of this teammates: “Welcome to manhood.” Ouch.

The, `Get C.C.,’ lineup is in place today. Let’s see if the Twins bunt on the big man and get him rolling around the infield. Sabathia doesn’t like the extra work, and will sometimes plunk a couple hitters in retaliation. He’s also hit Morneau a couple times.

Twins: 1. Bartlett, SS. 2. Punto, 2B. 3. Mauer, C. 4. Morneau, 1B. 5. Hunter, CF. 6. White, DH. 7. Cirillo, 3B. 8. Ford, LF. 9. Tyner, RF. Pitching: Garza.

Indians: 1. Sizemore, CF. 2. Lofton, LF. 3. Martinez, C. 4. Hafner, DH. 5. Garko, 1B. 6. Peralta, SS. 7. Nixon, RF. 8. Blake, 3B. Barfield, 2B. Pitching: Sabathia.

Once again, Gardy refuses to play Kubel against a left handed pitcher.

Crystal says:

July 29th, 2007 at 11:33 am

Why wouldn’t Gardy give Buscher the start at 3rd against Sabathia? He has to prove himself some how!

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 11:39 am

Oh, and it’s good to see that Gardy found another way to get his “boy” into the lineup.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 29th, 2007 at 11:46 am

I agree, I’d like to see Buscher in there along with Kubel.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 11:47 am

It just bugs me that Gardy sticks with Tyner against Sabathia but not Kubel…when Kubel’s statistics vs. LHP are quite superior.

I just read the trade of Ty Wigginton
from Tampa to Houston for Dan Wheeler.
That’s it! All Tampa got was a middle reliever. How could TR not come up with package of a couple of pitchers (probably minor leaguers even). Instead he goes to Houston. That makes me sick!

JimCrikket says:

July 29th, 2007 at 11:56 am

Hard for me to imagine how TR couldn’t top Dan Wheeler as well.

On a related note, ESPN just reported that after obtaining Wigginton, Houston has DFA’s Morgan Ensberg. Just a thought.

fargo says:

July 29th, 2007 at 11:58 am

I wish he would have put Hunter or even White between the M&M boys

BC Beneke says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:05 pm

Punto, Ford, and Tyner starting

That’s Minnesotan for surrender isn’t it?

No Castillo in the line up, is this when we see him hugging the team in the 4th inning, and then flying to New York?

Shaun says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:15 pm

Wheeler was 1-4 with a 5.07 ERA this season. Yeah JC, hard to believe TR couldn’t do better than that.

JimCrikket says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:19 pm

Glancing at mlb’s GameDay, it looks like Garza already isn’t getting the call at the knees. Could be a long day if he has to groove pitches to get a strike called.

Dustin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:22 pm

It’s been a tough year for Wheeler, but I have to disagree. I wouldn’t give up Wheeler, generally at the least a VERY quality setup man, for a great BENCH player in Wigginton. That’s one trade I’m glad TR didn’t make.

Shaun says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:25 pm

So the question is , who is a better “great bench player” Wiggington or Punto? :)

Shaun says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:26 pm

Now Garza is dealing!

Dustin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Sure, but would you give up an older Neshek to get Wigginton? That is essentially what Houston just did, and they’re not even in the race really. Pretty stupid if you ask me. TB is making some good moves and will be competing for the playoffs in the next 1-2 years with some of the pitching they have now and on the way (Prince/Davis/Niemann and a bullpen with solid arms to go with Kazmir and Shields, and a soon to be mighty offense).

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Man, Garza got squeezed on some pitches in the first.

Twice he threw a fastball right down the middle and at the knees and the ump called it a ball.

That’s a tough pitch for an umpire to call if they’re making that call from their knees.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Wigginton is no bench player. I’d love to have a bench player on our team who has hit 16 homers so far this year.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Erik, I agree. It allows bugs me when an umpire gets down on a knee behind the plate. For some reason that just really comes across as being lazy more than anything else.

Dustin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Austin, I said a great bench player, because on a championship-caliber team, that’s all he should be in my mind. There’s a lot of players I’d much rather have than Wigginton in a trade.

Shaun says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Exactly Austin. He may be no Miguel Cabrera, but Wiggington is an upgrade over Punto.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:36 pm

Buscher is an upgrade over Punto.

It’s just that this manager is so bent on giving Punto AB’s on a consistent basis.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:37 pm

Dustin when you look at who our everyday 3B is, Wigginton is a player who is way superior. Well now Garza starts to get lit up.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

Way to limit the damage Matt.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

Lit up?

He’s given up one hard hit ball so far…which was Nixon’s RBI double.

He is hitting the black today, man.

Dustin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:44 pm

All I’m saying Austin is that Wigginton has a career .326 OBP, including .329 this year. Let’s not make him into something he’s not. Yes, he’s decent, but there’s definitely better options out there.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

Dustin, there are probably better options…but they’re not realistic.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

Erik, yeah I admit that was probably an over-reaction to Nixon nailing that changeup. Only bad thing is his pitch count is way up there already.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:47 pm

Dustin, exactly there are a bunch of better options out there, but we aren’t going to pull a trade for A-Rod or anybody. Wigginton is one of the few that is available.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:49 pm

Could we please get a hit?

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:49 pm

This team has no approach at the plate today.

They want to bunt? Yeah, nice try.

You want to be patient? Then stop swinging at crap in the dirt.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

Make that error hurt Bartlett!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

No he says I will hit a weak grounder on the first pitch.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

Take a pitch!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

Yeah I don’t think he has the whole leadoff hitter concept down.

USAFChief says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

“Take a pitch.”

Or, how about Bartlett hits that first pitch fastball right down the middle hard for a change?

Either one would be ok with me, but he got his pitch to hit. Hit that damn thing.

Dustin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

We have plenty to get a REAL 3b (like Tracy or someone similar) or even a good prospect who is blocked (Stewart, Moore, Laroche, etc.). That’s all I’m saying. No reason to “settle” for an 8 or 9 hitter 3b/bench guy in Wigginton.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:56 pm

I don’t know about most people but I’d love to see our 8 or 9 hitter have 16 homers. That is just it, he would be our number 8 hitter. We aren’t asking for another Morneau, just a much better option than LNP.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:57 pm

Punch Pronk there, geeze!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

Hey Wally, the knees of your pants are all dirty. Why don’t you get off your knees so you can actually see the pitch when it is coming in?

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

96 miles per hour with movement.

You don’t learn that without an extended stint in the minors.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:03 pm

You gotta love an automatic out in the 2 hole. Why not put Tyner there Gardy?

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

No worries Punto…

Gardy still loves you even though you’re an absolute piece of garbage.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Piece of garbage is putting it too mildly.

Shaun says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Yeah great job standing there Punto!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Hey CC, why don’t you tell your fielders to just go in and grab some pine on the dugout because it doesn’t look like you even need them.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

What are the odds Hunter swings at the first pitch?

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

Well I guess that was a lil too far outta the zone for even Torii.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:08 pm

Can you hear that?

Hunter’s value continues to slide down…and down…and down.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

Why is it that I can see CC going complete game today?

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:17 pm

So far, 4 good innings out of Garza. Same old story, no run support.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

White you looked absolutely ridiculous in that at bat. Why don’t you go take a look at the video of that in between your at bats and try and come out with a better plan next time up?

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

Rondell is terrible.

But good thing he’s a nice guy.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:21 pm

Mogan Ensberg was DFA today, any interest?

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

Ensberg has been about as horrible as Shea Hillenbrand this year.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

My bad, I just noticed that this was already posted on here.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

I’m just so glad to see Lew Ford continue to steal AB’s from Jason Kubel.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

Are you serious Ford? You should never be able to eb called a major league player!

TwinsTerritory says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:23 pm

This inning showed how many guys don’t deserve spots on our roster.

flatblade says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:28 pm

With the wind blowing in and CC blowing the Twins away (7 Ks), I see very little chance for the Twins to score one run.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

You have to wonder why Torii was positioned so far in the left center field gap?

Dustin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

We don’t have a chance unless we can get him out of there soon.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:32 pm

Punch him there!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Bert, shut up and quit acting naive! Bonds didn’t take any roids because nothing has been proven, yeah right.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Be consistent Blue!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Well Jason Jennings of the Astros has to have the line of the day so far: 2/3 inning, 8 hits, 3 walks, and 11 earned runs.

Mark says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

Color me shocked that the Twins are having trouble scoring runs when 7 of the 9 hitters in the lineup have combined for fewer than 15 home runs on the season.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:41 pm

Bunt him over with LNP!

MNaggie says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Let’s see if Punto can get a bunt down.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Why are you not bunting?

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Wow!

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

Bunt bunt bunt!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

Nice!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Typical, all you need to do is put the ball in play to tie it up and you can’t even do that. You are a failure at life LNP!

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:45 pm

God for bid Punto hits 2nd.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

I think it’s time Punto begins looking for a new job.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Mauer, 3 K’s! Man you are struggling. This is just typical. Man on third with nobody out and first two guys K.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Great day for Joe.

mickey mental says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

mauer is terrible. shoulda traded him for wiggington.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

If they don’t get this run in after getting a leadoff double, you can consider this season done.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:50 pm

There you go, and you wonder why you continue to lose. Hell, if you can’t make contact for the rest of the inning after you get a runner on third with nobody out, you don’t deserve to win.

mickey mental says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

morneau is terrible. shoulda traded him for wiggington.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

A runner on 3rd with no out…and they stand him.

If I could swear, I would.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Are you F@#$%*& kidding me?

How de we have a runner at third, with our best two hitters up, and not at least tie the game.

I don’t care who is on the mound, one of three should be able to make contact.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:53 pm

Speaking of Wigginton, if that’s all that the Astros had to give up, we should tried a little harder to get him.

But then again, Terry Ryan won’t touch any of his minor leaguers.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:53 pm

Well I expected that out of LNP. Joe on the other hand has to absolutely make contact there. When is the last time he struck out three times in one game?

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:53 pm

The way certain things have fallen off, it makes last year look like an even bigger fluke.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:54 pm

Well we caught a break on that pitch.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

Am I the only one that thinks that cap looks horrible?

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

I’d love to hear Gardy’s reason for batting Punto 2nd today.

Dustin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

This just in; Garza is GOOD! It’s pretty amazing to think of this staff’s K potential next year. We could have FOUR starters in the top 10 in K’s next year. Santana/Liriano/Garza/Boof. Pretty impressive.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:00 pm

Erik, you know Gardy will say that it is because he just battles up there.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

That’s a huge run at 2nd.

Whiteness says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

Dustin, I agree. I was thinking of the Santana-Garza-Liriano punch at the beginning of the order and drooling (especially if Franchise can approach his 2006 stuff). With the way Baker has been pitching, he’s not that lousy a #5 starter, is he??

Pray to God that TR doesn’t sign a “veteran presence” pitcher this off-season.

T says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

Erik, I’d imagine his reasoning is…who else? Tyner, Ford, Cirillo? Move everybody up one and have Punto still at 9th?

Though personally, I like Busher in at third and Casilla called up from Rochester more than this lineup.

Whiteness says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:02 pm

Beginning of the rotation, rather, not order.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:02 pm

Dang, Garza looks phenemonal out there today! It really is too bad that this offense continues to look like that of a high school team and can’t even get him a single run.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:03 pm

Casilla isn’t the answer, he looked bad when he was up earlier this year. It really scares me that the Twins are banking on him at 2nd next season.

flatblade says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:07 pm

The Twins blew a golden opportunity with Bartlett on third and no one out. They miss Cuddyer there, I think.

Nora says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:08 pm

Now Twins can get the ball into the outfield, figures. LOL

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:08 pm

Cuddyer would have been batting with 2 outs in that situation. I’d rather have the MVP up there. You just have to be able to put the ball in play in that situation.

T says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:08 pm

This just in, TR has annouced that he’s going to wait until after the crucial four game homestand against KC before he determines if the Twins are buyers or sellers.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

Can we please pinch hit Kubel for Ford next inning? Of course that will never happen because Gardy is obsessed with his righty vs. lefty garbage.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:12 pm

Austin,

It’s foolish to look at how a player did in 43 AB’s and say he “isn’t the answer.”

Were you saying the same about Garza after his “bad” 50 innings last year?

Don’t be fooled by sample sizes.

flatblade says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:14 pm

I think Casilla will be pretty close to ready by ‘08. He is young and the year (almost) of AAA was necessary. I agree that he wasn’t ready this year.

I have hope for Span, as well. I know that he isn’t ready yet, but by the start (or maybe the middle) of ‘08, I think he will be able to do enough to play in the league.

Erik says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Remember, this is Casilla’s first full year at AAA.

Mark says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:16 pm

Kubel is screwing up today’s game. I don’t know how but this is definitely his fault.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:17 pm

Erik, what I should of said is I don’t think he is the answer for next season. Like you say, this is his first full year at AAA and from what I saw earlier this season, I guess I just feel like he really needs more time down there than just this season.

Whiteness says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:20 pm

Garza is going to be 1-3 with a 1.37 ERA. That is unbelievable from a starting pitcher.

LNP really took one for the team today, protecting Buscher from Captain Cheeseburger.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

It must be tough to play against this team these days and figure that if you score one run, you have a pretty decent chance of winning.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Sure glad that Ford took that at bat instead of Kubel. Nice work Gardy!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Whiteness, that just goes to show the offensive force known as the Minnesota Twins.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:31 pm

Heck yeah, it’s about time. Thatta boy Red Dog!

mickey mental says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

sabathia is terrible. shoulda traded him for wiggington.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

Sweet! Thank you Barfield! Keep drinking those shots of Captain or whatever you are having Mickey, it seems to be good luck!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

Huge hit for Morneau! Way to pick up some insurance boys!

Floridafan says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:39 pm

This all started yesterday when Tyner hit that home run. The earth shifted a couple of degrees on it’s axis….things are better now.

wheels says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

Too bad we didn’t get a win for Garza, but at least we’ve (almost) got a loss for Sabathia, and that makes me just as happy.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

wheels, thank you for that (almost). We have a long way to go here. I do like Neshek and Nathan though.

Sean says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:46 pm

I’m pretty sure Tyny’s home run was the turning point of our season.

Watch out, here come the Twins!

And by the way, the Cleveland commentators have practically been rendered speechless after that inning.

wheels says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

The N&N boys must have the day off, Austin. But I still like our chances.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Oh no wheels, here comes the first N in.

Nico says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

man, we cant even do the shift right

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:53 pm

Nice appearance by Pat today!

TreCool says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

Way to go! Nice DP, let’s close this one out!

TreCool says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:55 pm

Anyone catch the Cubs today? Big Z has three hits..amazing..

Mark says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

I am glad the Twins won last night and are up so far today but I have a hard time getting excited over two wins that have been primarily a result of Josh Barfield’s terrible defense.

Floridafan says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:57 pm

When it’s all said and done, Tyner’s first against the Indians will loom larger than Frank Thomas’s 500th against the Twins.

wheels says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:58 pm

I’m all about speaking too soon today.

mickey mental says:

July 29th, 2007 at 2:58 pm

barfield is terrible. shoulda traded him for wiggington.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:02 pm

Tre, yeah Carlos is dealing like he has been since the beginning of June. I heard a stat that he hasn’t allowed more than 5 hits in a start since June 6th.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:02 pm

Mark, we’ll take W’s anyway we can get them at this point in the season.

TreCool says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

Thinking ahead a bit to next season, we could have a pretty sick rotation as noted above(Santana/Garza/Liriano/Bonser/Baker) but we’ll see what happens with Torii. Btw, any updates on whether Liriano is throwing, etc. We’ll, we’re on the cusp of taking 2/3 from the Tribe, will TR make a move?

Mark says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

Austin,

I agree. I am just saying calling these past two games a sign of a huge turnaround is premature.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

LEW goes yard. Thatta boy!

Nico says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Mark, I agree but at the same point it has to start somewhere.

Bruce says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Terry - I am begging you to get us a hitter and end the Rondell torture. The fact he is such a great guy makes him perfect to be the leader of the Twin Cities’ Big Brothers & Big Sisters organization - not the number 6 hitter in our organization. We don’t need great guys - we need hitters.

qualler says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

LaVelle–any chance the Twins will pick up Morgan Ensberg now that the Astros cut him loose? I thought they were interested in him last year.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

I don’t know that there is anybody slower to deliver in between pitches in the majors than Betancourt. I remember in a game earlier this season against Detroit I believe it was, he was called for two balls for not delivering a pitch in the 20 seconds alotted.

wheels says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

So, let’s say Ford and Tyner go back to back. Can I start repenting now, or is it already too late?

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

wheels, Tyner got his one for the year last night, let’s not get greedy.

True enough, Austin. Besides, It’d be good to get N2 one last save as a Twin before he gets traded.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

That ain’t happening (him getting traded that is).

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Let’s go here Joe.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Nice much needed win by the boys today!

TreCool says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

Go Twins…Leeeeewwwww goes yard behind Tyner the night before, what the heck is going on?

JimCrikket says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

The two wins to take the series are certainly not cause for tremendous optimism, but it sure beats the hell out of going back home riding a huge losing streak. 6.5 games back in the wild card with home series vs KC and Cleveland. At least it makes for a potentially interesting trade deadline week.

For the record, my money is being bet on TR making absolutely zero moves this week.

bufftwins says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

Turned out to be a very good series. Again not much offense but things starting to go our way and Garza was lights out. Very similar to 2004 when Koskie hit the home run late on a Sunday to win it for Twins and send Cleveland into a downward spiral. Indians have now lost 3 straight series at home and they haven’t really had a bad stretch yet this season. Hopefully we’ll have two more bats in the lineup
next weekend when they come to the Dome (Cuddy and a trade). Still upset about Wigginton going to Houston for a veteran middle reliever with an ERA over 5.00. Come on TR step up and upgrade our lineup!!!

BC Beneke says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

What are the odds that the Twins would win today with Punto, Ford, and Tyner in the lineup???

Now Terry Ryan will feel confident that he doesn’t need to make a deal to improve this team.

Terry Ryan is a General Manager that is always looking towards tomorrow, and never looking at TODAY. The last move he made to make the team better for “the now” was Shannon Stewart. Today keeps passing the Twins by, and even if they were to sneak into the playoffs this year, they don’t have the depth, or the moxie to be a real contender against the Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, or Detroit… I’m not confident they are even as good as Cleveland.

Prospects keep you in the hopes for tomorrow… “Never Neverland” is where Ryan lives, and potential is gold in “Never Neverland.” Ryan is a “potential” genius, and an under-achiever in reality

Karlee says:

July 29th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

I love how you guys keep on giving crap to punto.
And yet mauer struck out three times?
Cute.
Real cute.
And did torii even play? Seriously. No I’m serious. I swear he never went up to bat it was THAT un-memorable.
Or White.

Blech.

USAFChief says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

I think the difference, Karlee, is that Hunter and Mauer have both done something at the plate in the past, and we have confidence they’ll do something in the future.

LNP, on the other hand…

mickey mental says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

hunter is terrible. should have traded him for wigginton.

jp says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Reports I’ve read on ESPN had Tampa Bay looking for Scott Proctor from NY and Garza from the Twins for Wiggington. NY didn’t want to give up Proctor. How many vote for Wiggington at the cost of Garza?

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

I am convinced that Karlee is Punto’s wife.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

jp, definitely not for Garza but at the same point I would have gone out and acquired him for somebody the value of Dan Wheeler.

BC Beneke says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

Sosa, Lamb, Loretta, Ensberg,

and minor leaguers that I’m asked never to mention again are out there to solve some of the Twins problems…

I think Shea Hildenbrand is a better option at DH/3b than Punto/White…

And Karlee. I think that Joe Mauer is the most over-hyped person in Minnesota sports history. He’s a single’s hitting catcher with significant history of injury… moving him to any other place on the field would make him mediocre at his best.

But even then Karlee, I’d take Mauer’s brothers over Punto… If it weren’t for Lew Ford I’d think that Punto was the worst hitter in Major League baseball.

bigdawg says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

wiggington is terrible, should have traded him for wiggington.

mickey mental says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

yes, bigdawg! yes!

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

BC, Lew made Punto look like a little leaguer today.

Twinkies says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

mickey mantle was terrible should of traded him for mickey mental

BC Beneke says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

One game doesn’t make the man…

Punto can field at 3 infield positions, and I think he could be a good fielding outfielder… he’d make a great 25th guy… Lew Ford might not make the starting line up for the Saints, and how many times has Lew missed balls in the outfield this year?

jp says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Austin:

If they won’t trade him for anyone but Garza, how exactly do you make them?

mudcat grant says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

you are most kind, Twinkies. thank you.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

jp, obviously they were trying to get as much as they could at for him at the beginning. When they figured out that they weren’t going to get near what they were asking for, their conditions for a trade dropped. At that point, TR should have gotten back into talks with them.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

BC, I am not trying to defend Ford in the least bit. At the same time neither him or Punto deserve to be on a major league roster.

JimCrikket says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

18 doubes, 3 triples and 5HR and an OPS of .834. 90 BA points and 35 slugging points better than Kubel so if Mauer is a “singles hitter”, one can only imagine what you’d call Kubel.

And jp is right, if what TB wanted was a reliever that they felt could come in and be their closer, Wheeler might very well have been their choice over Rincon. IF the only option TR had was to give up Garza, then it’s a deal you turn down. Maybe they just wanted to trade him to the NL. Who knows with these GMs?

Travis says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Karlee, from the looks of your site, I can see why you would make such absurd statements…

I’m glad the Twins pulled the series out in their favor. Monday or Tuesday should be interesting (or uneventful). In any case, we should get a clearer picture of where this team is heading in the next few months.

Now bring on the Royals. I look forward to watching Alex Gordon don a golden sombrero.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Travis I hope that comment doesn’t come back to haunt us. Gordon struggled at the beginning of the season, but that is what you can expect from a 23 year old. He has really been playing better as of late and I think he is going to be a great player before all is said and done.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 29th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Pray to God that TR doesn’t sign a “veteran presence” pitcher this off-season.

AMEN. I think we wasted $4 million this year. That money could have been used for a bat.

Also, I second the question on if the Twins have any interest in Ensberg. He was DFA so until the 10 days are up we’d have to make a trade, but I’d think cash considerations would do it.

I’m not saying we should, just interested to see if the Twins have any interest.

Oh, and I agree with the Casilla comment way above. He will be out starter next season, and I think he’ll be fine. This season at AAA as you mentioned was needed though.

And, I also have hope for Span. I think he’ll see time when September callups come around, and maybe a bench player next season. (I hope we sign Torii)

TwinsTerritory says:

July 29th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

All I can say, is don’t overlook the Royals.

Also, anybody else sick of hearing about Torii getting traded? I think there is about a 5% chance of it.

If anything, the Twins will bring in a bat, and maybe trade Castillo, Silva and I guess Ford.

Austin says:

July 29th, 2007 at 5:03 pm

TT, I agree with your statement on the Royals. They have really been playing well as of late. They are also not the laughing stock of the AL like they have been in the past.

Krissy says:

July 29th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Mickey Mental/Big Dawg thanks for the laughs!! It’s been too long since I’ve laughed that hard on this blog.

Jason says:

July 29th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Well, Tyner’s homerun on Saturday was definitely an amazing case of that blind squirrel finally finding one….

And I suspect many of you view Lew Ford’s homerun Sunday similarly….

However, before you go there…and I point this out because Lew’s HR Sunday could be his last at-bat as a Twin…consider this stat: Take a look at where Ford ranks among current Twins with multi-homers in homerun average (HR per at-bat), less the big two of Morneau and Hunter…

Ford (.028) Kubel (.031) Cirillo (.018) Bartlett (.013) L-Rod (.020) Bartlett (.009) Cuddyer (.029)

That’s right, only Kubel and Cuddyer are ahead of Leeewwww…and Cuddyer is ahead by a mere .001 and has 236 more at-bats than Leeewwww…

Still want Lew gone as an off-the-bench player?

Jason says:

July 29th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

Sorry, I messed that up…Mauer is (.018), Cirillo (.013) and Bartlett (.009)

My point remains the same, however.

Steve from Fridley says:

July 29th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

The other point is that Lew is batting under .230. Who cares if he has a whopping 3 HR and hits them slightly more often than Cuddyer? Your very point that he has less AB takes credibility away from that argument.

If you sample this past week, Tyner hits more HR per AB than several players on our team.

Stretch it out over a full year. Lew needs to GO.

Jason says:

July 29th, 2007 at 7:45 pm

You are dead wrong about one thing, Steve…

The fact that Lew has less AB than Cuddyer (236 in fact) ADDS credibility to my argument…what it means is Cuddy has been clipping along at his .029 HR average for a long, long time, whereas Lew could hit another one tomorrow and jolt by him in that category…

Plus, that argument works with the average too…true, he’s hitting .226, but it’s not nearly as established with 106 ABs as, say Punto’s .213 average (328 ABs) or Kubel’s .245 average (282 ABs)

I think you make a mistake if you ditch Lew as a bench player, considering his potential to send one over the fence…

Jason says:

July 29th, 2007 at 8:00 pm

Plus if you give Lew credit for the 2 HR he hit at Rochester during his rehab, he’s up to 5 in app. 140 at-bats….

snepp says:

July 29th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

Here’s some more Lew support.

If you completely ignore how pathetic he’s been over the last 2 1/2 years, he’s pretty good.

Jason says:

July 29th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

maybe so snepp, but I’m just sayin…if you’re going to rip him….you better be prepared to rip:

Bartlett (who has 19 errors to Ford’s 0)
Punto (need I even start)
L-Rod
Cirillo (I don’t want to play everyday)
R. White (good thing we waited so long, huh)

KirkMack says:

July 30th, 2007 at 7:56 am

Ummm….did you just compare a shortstop that plays every day’s error total to a part=time outfielder’s error total?

Tell me you didn’t just do that…
