Joe Nathan Disseminates Information
Posted on February 29th, 2008 – 3:04 PMBy La Velle
I think Joe Nathan is tired of us asking him about his contract situation.
The Twins closer has a sign hanging over his clubhouse stall that reads: `Nothing to report.’
Nathan’s agent, Dave Pepe, and the Twins have tried to hammer out a deal but the sides apparently aren’t close. Pepe, when contacted today, reiterated that a deal gets tougher to do once the regular season starts.
You wonder if the Twins are approaching Nathan the way they approached Torii Hunter in that they may be reluctant to sign him to a deal longer than three years.
The Twins are stretching on the field as they prepare to face Dice-K, Big Papi and the Boston Red Sox. The Mets may be fined by the league for only bringing one regular on a recent road trip (the league wants at least four regulars on trips). But the Red Sox may deserve a bonus because Boof Bonser will face something close to an A-lineup:
1. Julio Lugo, 2. Dustin Pedroia. 3. Big Papi. 4. Manny Ramirez. 5. Mike Lowell. 6. Kevin Youkilis. 7. Jason Varitek, C. 8. Coco Crisp. 9. Bobby Kielty. Pitching:Dice-K.
Twins: 1. Span. 2. Kubel (DH). 3. Cuddy. 4. Morneau. 5. D.Y. 6. Red Dog. 7. Bushman. 8. LNP. 9. Everett. Pitching: Less of Boof.
Warning: This blog will switch to a new server at 4 p.m. and the migration won’t be complete for several hours. I’ll be unable to provide in-game details. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Wow it looks like the Sox are serious about winning this Mayors cup. I think this is there first pre season game though so hopefully they’ll be a little rusty and only win by 10 runs.
Carlos Gomez is putting on a show during b.p.
I will crush the puny Twins tonite
Is Gomez putting on a show hitting over the fence, or liners?
He’s probably showing is great bunting ability!
Did you mean to say the Mets in you post LEN or were you talking about the Sox?
Did you guys catch Johan’s stats today? He gave up a HR to Juan Gonzalez! Yes the same guy that is like 50 years old.
The only show will be me and Manny.
Los Twins son débiles y pequeños
span gets a 2nd start at cf, has pirdie gotten a shot yet?
big papi that new beard is really ugly!!!
twins mlb tv 6:05..
Is that free on MLB tv???
las chicas piensan que mi barba es atractiva
Lavelle = Don’t you hate it when you are playing bingo and you have a bingo but do not realize it until it is too late? Shannon does….
hace tan a su esposa
hes putting on a show in batting practice…. why cant he do that during games?
lirifranchise — how many games has he played with the Twins so far?
mlb tv can be purchased for 19.95 mo i believe…you will have to check the website, but its not free……i purchased by the year last year and mine runs out next month….
he hit .230 for the mets last year. plus he has never came close to hitting 300 in the minors. delmon young hit 290 last year for the rays in his rookie year and had a great avg in the monors. young and gomez are almost the same age…i just think its about time he starts hitting. he better since we had to trade santana to get him.
Dan, Gomez started yesterday.
And it’s spelled “Pridie”
I don’t believe Carlos Gomez was the #1 overall draft pick or the top rated propect in all of baseball, so to expect Delmon Young numbers is a little out of line.
Now, before being hurt on July 4th last year Gomez batted .250/.303/.383. he did most of his batting out of the 8th spot and was used as a pinch hitter in 18 games while starting 24 games. After he came back he was used as a pinch hitter and went 2 for 16.
It is too early to make any judgements on Carlos Gomez. Put into a lineup where the pitcher isn’t following him could help greatly. As will not being used as a pinch hitter. His should show improvement this year.
thank you romer, but why hasnt he gotten a shot yet. span vs sox and college team, pridie nothing yet.
Also, Gomez put up better numbers than Jacoby Ellsbury did in AAA last year.
I guess I like
Boofless better LaVelle.
LNP4Life
He did? his BA, OB% and his SLG% were all higher than Ellsbury?
Right dan. Unless Gomez hits like .400 in ST, I’m hoping Pridie steps up….and that they trade Span.
LNP4Life, I’m confused. Didn’t Gomez put up good numbers last June, then get injured and not do very well? Was he in AAA last year?
Not being sly, I really don’t remember for sure.
ellsbury .298/.360/.380
gomez .286/.363/.414
gomez had his average bottom out at.167 on june 1st and then come back to .250 by july 4th.
gomez played only 34 games of AAA and then had a rehab assignment to A+. He did terrible there and then terrible in Sept. with the Mets
Gomez started at AAA and was called up when Beltran went down.
Gomez had his average as high as .279 on June 25th. He was called up on May 13th.
all stats provided by baseball-reference.com
I just hope that Gomez doesn’t get dumped on just because he was part of the Santana trade and Twins fans feel that he should be a superstar right away. He has more potential than Melky or Jacoby
Pridie .318/.375/.539 16-2B 10HR 39 RBI 22BB 47K 12/3 SB/CS in 63 games
Gomez .286/.363/.414 8-2B 2 HR 13 RBi 15BB 23K 17/4 SB/CS
If Pridie can field, I don’t think there is anything else for him to get from AAA. Gomez could work on his bat some. It’s a good problem to have, too many good young players
I was going to put up Spans AAA numbers but I couldn’t bring myself to type them in.
Pirdie projects to a 4th outfielder.
Gomez apparently from reports on here, and elsewhere is like Torii Hunter in the fact that he cannot hit curves, and sliders very well at all. I think he could develop into that kind of outfielder. COULD.
Ellsbury will be a .300/.400/.420 kind of leadoff hitter for the better part of his career, and is what this team needed… a CF, and a leadoff hitter.
I don’t see that kind of patience coming from Gomez. He’s fast as heck, and he’s got raw talent, but Ellsbury is refined, and I don’t think his cup of coffee with the Red Sox last year was a fluke. I’ve been quite the fan of his for quite some time, and I look at him as a Brett Butler at worst, and a Kenny Lofton to Willie McGee at best. For what the Twins need. I would take the leadoff hitter. solo homers don’t do much for me.
Ellsbury
Mauer
Young
Morneau
Cuddyer
Kubel
Harris
Lamb
Everett
That lineup would score 50 more runs than the lineup with Gomez in it. Gomez is a streaky hitter. You showed it in your stats… one extreme to the next… I want consistancy from my leadoff hitter. I don’t know about you, but that makes Gomez highly unlikely to be a very good leadoff hitter on a team who has two high quality leadoff hitter types in the entire organization. Mauer and Revere. Yee Haw. But hopefully I’m wrong… I’d like to win more than I believe this team will win, but it will take a really great year from Gomez, and a terrible year from Ellsbury for me to change my mind on that one.
Over on the Vikes bolg they set a Strib record for the most page views in history with 85,000 pretty crazy. Hope all of us on the Twins blog are staying positive.
BC lets talk about the players we have not the ones “you” think we should have gotten. I have a feeling Gomez will surprise. Just wait and for god sake be patient. But I guess that is hard for the “average” Twins fan.
If the Twins are counting on a big year from Gomez, it will be a long year. Ellsbury will benefit from the Sox lineup in terms of getting better pitches to hit. You may be a little high on the OBP for him. It was only .394 last year and he batted .351. He only drew 8 walks in 33 games, but guys were challenging him in the zone i suppose.
Span on with a hit.
Ellsbury also started almost every game he played. Gomez didn’t get consistant at bats every day, which maybe lead to some ups and downs at the plate
I guess Span is the early leader for the CF spot ![]()
If you want Ellsbury so badly, some of you, maybe the Twins should trade for him.. How about Liriano for the second-coming of Brett Butler and Willie McGee or as good as Kenny Lofton…All three barely were all-stars,
McGee was good for 5 years, winning an MVP
Butler, a one-time all-star, was a big steals guy..singles hitter
Lofton, a six-time allstar, was a decent steals guy.. a singles hitter..
I think in the end, Gomez has more potential personally. And I don’t think we need to rely on him putting up big numbers this season.
He is 22, with good defense and very nice speed. His bat should come…
span got a hit against dice!
And Delmon has his first hit as a Twin ![]()
Bonser goes 2.0 innings and gives up just a single to Ortiz. Slowey is in…
Nice job by Boof.
Yeah, a nice way to start. Slowey gives up a single to the first hitter.
