Hungry (or thirsty) in Fort Myers?
Posted on March 1st, 2008 – 10:29 AMBy La Velle
It’s great that my office is at a stadium - especially during spring training. But the days are long.
We do, however, find ways to blow off steam just so we don’t go nuts down here. Last night was such a night.
After covering the Twins-Red Sox game, I headed out to a place in Fort Myers called The Cigar Bar. I like to smoke a stogie every now and then (I’m on a big Rocky Patel run right now) and I’ve brought all my cigars down to Florida because I refuse to stand outside in 20 degree weather in Minnesota (smoking ban, grrrr).
The place was packed and it was a verbal banquet. I got into a conversation with a 36-year old woman from New York whose accessories included a boy toy. She’s retired. She was wearing her wealth. And she had the line of the spring.
“I’m 36 and I use Botox,” she said. “Life can only get better.”
Somehow, that reminded me that a few readers have asked for my list of preferred restaurants and hangouts. So with the help of some locals and one Twins expert (thanks Cuddy) here are some places worth checking out if you’re coming down to watch the Twins.
My favorite Italian restaurant is Nino’s which is located off Daniels Parkway and right down the road from the Hammond Stadium, where the Twins play. I’ve known the owner, Graziano, for years. He makes everyone feel important.
My favorite Mexican place is Cantina Laredo. Continue west on Daniels Parkway for about one-half mile, hang a right into the mall, drive through the mall and Cantina Laredo is on the left. They make the guacamole right in front of you.
That mall, the Bell Tower Shops, has other good spots, like Bistro 41 , Blue Pointe and Cru (Cru is as trendy as they come).
Another excellent seafood option is The Prawnbroker (Grouper Matanzas!!)
But the new big dog in Fort Myers is a massive food and entertainment complex called the Gulf Coast Town Center. PF Chang, Outback, the Miller Ale House, something called Hurricane Wings that Cuddyer likes, and other spots are located there. The Cigar Bar is there. And there’s a Bar Louie that’s very popular.
If you head to Fort Myers Beach, you’ve got to stop at the Beached Whale. Looks like a dive but the food is very good (try the oysters Rockefeller) and the staff is nuts (in a good way). Sunsets are great. Joe C. loves the place…so does Mrs. Joe C.
Last but not least, if you have time to make the drive over to Captiva, there’s no place like the Mucky Duck. Excellent food. It’s near the ocean, and people gather there to watch (and applaud) the sun as it tucks under the horizon.
This isn’t an exhaustive list, but a good start.
Unless there’s breaking news, I’ve going to leave this up for the rest of the day. I may invade Joe C.’s blog with in-game comments.

I’m hungry. Famished, in fact. Thanks La Velle.
LEN,
So are you a fan of the Beached Whale? Or are you simply taking Joe C’s word for it?
Shelman
I checked Nino’s last year and it was outstanding. It will definitely be on the agenda next year when I go.
The China Dragon in a strip mall off of 6 Mile Cypress is a great place to get Asian. It’s just a small place with about 4 tables inside and a couple outside, but the food is excellent.
La Velle,
Just wanted to say great work overall. Heard you on KFAN this morning. We know you work long hours down there, but don’t be so defensive when someone implies that you don’t. Also, there are people that work those long hours the whole year, for their whole life, without the benefit of watching big league baseball up close and personal as their job. Keep things in perpective. Not trying to rip into you, just a suggestion.
Hey, La Velle…you should check out this place called Hurricane Harry’s over in Naples, it’s not too far…they’ve got some good seafood there. First time I went there, I asked the young waitress where they got their walleye, and she thought for a second and replied…”The sea?” It was a classic. Cool place though. Also, Stevie Tomatoes is a favorite of mine, always go there when I’m in town.
Craig,
I’m not defensive, but every time I’m on The Fan someone asks me how much fun am I having in Florida or what am I doing with the company credit card. My bosses already have wild imaginations…..:)
Levelle, where exactly is the cigar bar at gulf coast center i so there all the time to eat at different places being that I live here now? and you do great work love reading your colums and your blogs keep up the good work.
I am pretty sure Brian means PELICAN LARRY’s in Naples. There are 2 locations. Lots of hot eye candy.
Surprised LEN3 didn’t mention Coconut Point or 5th Avenue in Naples. Lots of nice scenery down there.
BBQ: Michelbob’s on Airport-Pulling Road in Naples across from the airport.
The local hangout spots has a FEATURE story in the Strib written all over it. Maybe a few places where the players like to hangout. Potts Sports Cafe, Heritage Palms, Colonial Country Club, Lani Kai on the beach, Groove Street, etc.
MAX,
I should have mentioned Michelbob’s.
We did publish a travel to spring training piece a few years ago.
I will NEVER mention spots where players like to hang out. One, I don’t know all of them. Two, they have a right to find places to unwind. I occasionally bump into them at a few places.
Also, you mentioned some places like Lani Kai and Groove street that I wouldn’t send my enemies to. The bathroom in the Lani Kai is an incubus for about 15 different plagues…
Thanks for the great info on where to eat and drink.
Now I hope you can help with another spring training question. I’ve searched the entire Internet (well, I’ve googled) and I can’t find the answer to this question and I hope you can help.
When and where do the Twins hold batting practice on game days at Hammond?
Thanks LEN3, I will be there on Wednesday. Hope to see “The Kid” pitch!
I have an idea for what you and Joe can do with your long days - - - how about give us more content for the Sunday sports section.
LEN3 - Great Job! I never miss a visit to The Timbers on Sanibel Island - best place year after year! Cheers - JTBISON
I agree with JTBISON, The Timbers is the best, especially the crunchy grouper.
