Twins-Reds lineups

Posted on March 20th, 2008 – 3:25 PM
By La Velle

I think the Twins lineup you’re about to read could be very close to the Opening Day lineup.

Reds: 1. Freel, RF. 2. Patterson, CF. 3. Phillips, 2B. 4. Dunn, DH. 5. Encarnacion, 3B. 6. Hatteberg, 1B. 7. Keppinger, SS. 8. Hopper, LF. 9. Bako, C. Pitching: Bailey.

Twins: 1. Gomez, CF. 2. Mauer, C. 3. Cuddyer, RF. 4. Morneau, 1B. 5. Young, LF. 6. Monroe, DH. 7. Lamb, 3B. 8. Harris, 2B. 9. Everett, SS.  Pitching: Slowey, then Nathan, Crain, Rincon, Keisler, Barrett.

[update]: Gardy indicated before the game that, with a day game tomorrow and a road trip to Jupiter on Friday (Gardy will follow MLB rules and bring four regulars) he decided not to start Kubel today. He did, however, say that Monroe would be used some against righthanders during the season, based on who’s hot, who’s slumping and who needs a day off.

A COUPLE GAME NOTES: Dan Gladden, finally, caught a foul ball during the game. He had Kent Hrbek in the booth when the ball came flying back. The Dazzle Man quickly slipped on the glove that’s been collecting dust in the booth, stood up and caught the ball. I didn’t know what happened until a huge roar rose from the road.

Go-Go Gomez was at it again in the seventh inning. He beat out a slow two-hopper to short - by a step - for an infield hit. With a runner on third, Gomez took off for second and didn’t draw a throw - but he dove into second anyway! The middle infielders never left their positions!

Second base umpire Tim Tschida (what a coincidence) waited until Gomez got up and made eye contact with him before he emphatically signaled him safe. Hilarious…

“He needed to slide into second base or he would have ran into the left fielder,” one pressbox wag said.

I think it’s an improvement over last year’s opening day lineup

cmathewson says:

One change: Hopefully Kubel hits against righties. Monroe is in there tonight against the right hander Bailey.

Gutzon says:

It’s nice to see established hitters in the 2-8 spots. Actually, it’s nice to see seven hitters in the lineup at all.

Scott says:

March 20th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Castillo - 2B
Punto - 3B
Mauer - C
Morneau - 1B
Hunter - CF
Cuddyer - RF
White - LF
Cirillo - DH
Bartlett - SS

The loss of Castillo is a big negative but otherwise this lineup should be better

Scott says:

March 20th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Seriously, Punto, White, Cirillo and Bartlett were garbage

BC of ND says:

Agreed lets see if the can get a few homers off of Bailey

Josh's Thoughts says:

I think Span will take it, unless Gomez starts hitting like Ted Williams the rest of the way.

Still enough time to sway my, and I’m sure the teams decision.

gobbledygookguy says:

play this lineup for a month and give kubel some at bats and see what happens. after may 1st fix what needs fixing but don’t juggle it every other day so nobody gets any flow. and leave nicky on the bench until at least the 8th inning!

thrylos98 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Here is a comparison with last year’s lineup:

Spot 2007OPS+ 2008prjOPS+
1 75 56* Gomez
2 86 117 Mauer
3 87 111 Cuddyer
4 95 121 Morneau
5 112 91* Young
6 104 109 Kubel
7 80 106 Harris
8 77 112 Lamb
9 100 56 Everett

The list is of the OPS+ for each hole in the batting order last year and last year’s OPS plus for the person in a particular position this year. I assume that Gomez and Young will improve this year…

SethSpeaks says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

I agree… play with a lineup for a month and just see how it goes. Again, I would replace Monroe with Kubel. And obviously you’re going to give catchers a day off, but other than that, just let the lineup gel and then see where your needs are.

Haha, Tyner at DH

Yeah, that’s sick, the Twins have been lacking a true DH forever, too bad Ortiz didn’t feel like playing for the Twins

Joey Jo Jo Jr. says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Sure, that lineup looks fine now, but I don’t think we’ll ever replace Tyner at DH.

mike wants wins says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Looks like a pretty good lineup to me. As others have said, I hope Kubel gets the majority of the time at DH. He’s my pick for most improved this year. (ugh, predictions are dangerous)

It is an interesting mix of youth and guys pluggind holes until someone else can fill in. Hopefully Gardy sticks to it for a while so the players can show what they can / cannot do.

snepp says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

too bad Ortiz didn’t feel like playing for the Twins

No, it’s too bad the team chose not to keep him around.

Steve from Fridley says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

With Gardenhire’s recent comments about feeling secure using Monroe as a backup center fielder, I think he’s trying to get him some ABs against righties more to see how he handles them this Spring.

I’d assume during the season, Kubel will be the primary DH against righties, but wants to see Monroe right now since he’ll inevitably be in there against them when he’s filling in for Young, Gomez, and Cuddyer on occasion.

Scott says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

The most HR’s Kubel has hit in a season is 13

Monroe hit 28 HR’s in 2006

Why not have someone who has a proven ability to hit HR’s as the primary DH and use Kubel as the backup

Fred says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Ugh….why didn’t Gardy start Kubel against the RH pitcher? Isn’t that the idea of a PLATOON?

This is ridiculous. Kubel better get 500+ ABs this year.

Scott says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

The team cut him because he was hurt and never had a breakout season, it took getting his ass cut to light a fire under him

Scott says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Fred I know what Monroe can do with 528 AB’s - hit 28 HR’s

snepp says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Kubel better get 500+ ABs this year.

Don’t hold your breath, as long as Monroe is healthy Gardy is going to milk that “veteran run producer” for all he’s worth.

Scott says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Monroe is not like Cirillo’s or Rondell’s or Ruben Sierra’s of the past, he’s a relatively young guy who is not in the twilight of his career which the Twins have had a habit of picking up seasons of late

snepp says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Monroe is very similar to Tony Batista though, a mediocre hitter who is typically viewed as a “good hitter” because he hit a few homeruns, while the enormous number of outs he records goes largely unnoticed by Joe Average fan.

If Gardy plays to Monroe’s strength, hitting left-handed pitching, he can be a quality contributor.

Steve from Fridley says:

March 20th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

To those criticizing Monroe versus right-handed pitching, here are his numbers against RHPs for 2005-06:

.260 BA, .461 SLG (846 AB), 39 HR, 45 2B, 137 RBI

Kubel last season:

.280, .474, 12 HR, 27 2B, 2 3B, 57 RBI in 346 AB

Kubel’s average and slugging are slightly higher, but Monroe can handle RHP almost just as well, while Kubel, on the other hand, is basically inept against LHP (.236/.333)

If you give them both 500 ABs against RHP…

Monroe:
.260, .461, 23 HR, 27 2B, 81 RBI

Kubel:
.280, .474, 17 HR, 39 2B, 82 RBI

Monroe, excluding last season in which he was slowed by some injuries early and never bounced back from, actually hits more HRs off RHPs than Kubel, though his overall slugging is lower because of Kubel’s higher average and more doubles.

Personally, yes I’d rather see Kubel get ABs against RHPs simply because Monroe isn’t likely to be here longer than one season, while Kubel will probably be around for awhile.

However, my point is that all signs this Spring indicate a healthy Craig Monroe, who is a perfectly viable option against RHP. In fact, in 2006, when Monroe hit 28 HR, he hit just TWO against LHPs in 140 ABs, while 26 came agaisnt RHPs.

When it comes down to it, be happy that we have two viable options at DH! For the last two years, we really haven’t even had ONE.

romer says:

Jacob, looks like tonight’s game is broadcast on the radio. (But I thought Tuesday’s was too!)

http://www.am1500.com/twins/springschedule08.shtml

Steve from Fridley says:

March 20th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Monroe is a better hitter than Tony Batista, though I agree somewhat with the comparison.

Still though, Monroe’s average, OBP, and SLG% are all 15-20 points higher than Batista’s if you look at his stats from the span of 2003-2006.

Again, I’m completely willing to throw out Monroe’s 2007 and take this Spring as an indication of his health. Plus, talking with Carew and Oliva can only help him, and he’s spent a good deal of time with the two.

I’m not in love with the idea of paying him $3.8 million, but he’s certainly a nice insurance policy to have if one of our outfielders gets hurt, and he provides depth and power from the bench, as well as a strong bat to DH against lefties. Great addition? Not really. Better than Rondell, Batista, Sierra, Boone, Ponson, Ramon Ortiz, or Livan?

Absolutely.

Captain America says:

March 20th, 2008 at 5:05 pm

I think this line-up makes sense. My main concern is unproven starting pitching. But I like the speed in this line-up and some good thumpers too.

The “M&M” boys could soon become the “M&M&M” boys including Monroe. Monroe is out to prove he belongs.

romer says:

March 20th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Steve, of course we’d take the old Monroe (pre-2007) over Kubel. He was a Twins killer too.

Both he and Kubel were doing poorly last year.

But Kubel broke out the 2nd half last year. And Gardy likes him as a hitter. So what are they gonna do with him now, bury him? Cuz he ain’t gonna play any LF with Young in there.

And he’s doing okay this ST.

La Velle, has anyone asked Kubel about how he views all of this?

lookatthosetwins says:

March 20th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

Is there a link to the gameday for this game????

coco says:

March 20th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Gentlemen, please note that La Velle said this could be “close” to the line up on opening night. Substitute Kubel for Monroe & maybe change a couple of the last batters’ order & there you have it. LNP in to play defense in 8th if Twins ahead. But will he be put in at 2nd or 3rd? I could see arguments for both. Only the Gardy knows. :)

GBG says:

March 20th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

“And he’s (Kubel) doing okay this ST.” - Hmmm. I’d question your definition of “ok” — Span’s outhitting him in BA, OBP and SLG, so I’m not sure. (Kubel’s at .250/.341/.417)

That said, I like Kubel, I think he’ll get plenty of at bats, and has a good future. I shutter to think about how good he’d be if he hadn’t had that injury…

JimCrikket says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

It’s still ST so I really don’t get why it’s such a sin for Gardy to DH Monroe tonight, regardless of what side the pitcher throws from. Kubel’s an OK player, I guess, but the man-crushes people have on him baffle me.

We’ve got 2 potential DHs. Their lines in ST are:

.250/.341/.417 2HR 5RBI in 41PA over 13 games

.333/.367/.630 2HR 6RBI in 29PA over 10 games

Objectively, who’s looking better at the plate? Yes, it’s a small sample size but if Kubel’s and Monroe’s ST numbers were reversed, there would be thunderous cries around here about how Monroe should be cut loose to save money because Kubel’s having such a great Spring. And that’s not even discussing their relative values as outfielders.

I hope Kubel has a great year. I just don’t see why people seem to think he’s earned the right to have a spot in the batting order virtually handed to him.

romer says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Such a short time in ST, but if you extrapolate out Kubel’s stats so far in his 36 AB’s, he’d get about 30 HR’s and 75 RBI’s. He’s getting his walks too, hence the .341 OBP.

Not a bad ST. And he ain’t no rookie. And he showed high promise last year.

Josh Meyer says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:35 pm

John Patterson was released today by the Nats. With our starting rotation still up in the air, will we have any interest in signing him?

mj1 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

twins messed up when they let josh fogg get away and went with l.hernandez instead…fogg was still out there when they signed livan…ouch

romer says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Oh yeah, Monroe is doing much better than Kubel this ST (and everybody else I suppose).

It’s just that the kid was beaten down by injuries and it looked like this was gonna be his year.

And now they’ll half-bury him at best, the way it looks.

romer says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:47 pm

So Lamb pulls a “Casilla” and blows his underhand throw at second.

No earned runs for Slowey in his first 2 innings.

Josh's Thoughts says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

mj1, what’s your reasoning for saying we messed up by not getting Fogg?

mj1 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

gardy is going to make sure both kubel and monroe get plenty of at bats..all he has to do is give a guy a day off now and then…he really has 4 starting outfielders and 2 that will dh so there will be plenty abs to go around and the hot hand will naturally play…its nice to have such decent bench strength for a change….this team will be very exciting from the offensive end…..just hope the pitchers all grow together and become the kiddie corp of the 2000s……can anybody see a wildcard out there…i do..

Jimmy Jam says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

I’m beginning to come to grips with the fact that Jason Pridie isn’t going to make the trip north. I really would prefer to see him get a shot and let Gomez get some more seasoning at the AAA level. I like Pridie’s versatility, and statistically he has a better average than Gomez. I hope the decision to bring Gomez north has nothing to do with the fact that he was part of the Santana trade, but I think that plays into it as well.

mj1 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

josh…we should have signed him when he was available…i remember bloggers going back and forth on who we should sign…i always wanted fogg, but was not overly disappointed when we got livan, but now in retrospect, i wonder if we did the right thing

mj1, I guess you could say the Twins have 5 starting outfielders. There was a lot of blogger complaining last year that the Twins needed to put Kubel in the lineup and keep him there so he could stretch out and get going.

They did it, and he responded well. Now they’ll regress him, the way it looks.

Who did Fogg go to?

Not counting CF, the Twins 8 presumed starters have 3 SB’s this year. Team as a whole has 28.

We’ll have speed in 2010.

For now, there’s none except in CF and the reserves.

Well, Gardenhire said last week that they’d like to move Casilla back to SS this year, and with Everett on a one-year deal, Gardy said he and the front office think that Casilla can be the SS of the future.

Tolbert is much more of a 2B than a SS IMO.

Also, Plouffe may compete with him at SS, but many people think that Plouffe might be better suited as a 2B in the future.

mj1 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

lnp is as good as they come with the glove, but he is truly having his troubles with the bat the last year, hopefully he gets back on track, ….
the twins ss of the future i dont believe is casilla any longer, i heard they were thinking more of plouffe or tolbert and casilla will be the next reserve infielder like punto….

romer says:

TT, I hope Kubel doesn’t need to be babied, and I hope he keeps going if he doesn’t play every day.

Punto trys to swing like he is Frank Thomas. He is awful up there.

Evertt’s line from 2004:

Can Everett get back to those numbers? Maybe, I dout it though, but Punto has no chance at those numbers.

romer says:

romer says:

March 20th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

The trouble with Punto is he has good resources to teach him out of his slump.

The first resource is himself. He had that wonderful 3-month period in 2006 where he was above .300 and in the top 10 AL OBP. So he must know something about how to make it in the bigs.

The other resources besides Gardy and Vavra are Molitor, Carew, and Oliva.

Yet none of this works for him. It all seems so hopeless. It simply must be his fault.

Looks like he thinks of himself as a .290/.300 hitter like he showed in 2006. And he’s screwing himself into the ground with that typical Punto intensity to try and get back to that excellence rather than accept a good, steady .250/.260 range instead…..and be a decent reserve.

And Gardy probably set all this up when he announced last season that 2B was Punto’s to lose. But such wise trickery won’t work on Casilla, cuz he just isn’t a thinker type of guy.

And it sure hasn’t worked on Punto.

romer says:

March 20th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Sounded like Gomez’s IF hit technically could have been an error. But Gomez made the Cincy SS hurry his throw and the SS juggled it before he could throw (according to both Gordo and Gladden).

So give the credit to Gomez. He also doubled to set up the first Twins run. So he was in the middle of both Twins scoring rallies.

Too bad Slowey didn’t get one more out, as he didn’t pitch in the 6th. His ERA would be below 4. Which is the way to look at him, because he’s only had one bad outing this ST, right?

Was his ERA 16 some a while back?

La Velle…or anyone else with knowledge on the situation, is there any update on the Nathan contract extension? What are your thoughts on whether they can get him locked up to a long-term deal? Thanks La Velle, the postings really help keep us up to date with what’s going on down there.

Lamb pulled another “Casilla” by making the baserunning blunder and taking a run away from the Twins.

What was Slowey’s pitch count?

trosen says:

Slowey has had three good outings now in a row. He deserves the fifth spot.

Watching Harris screw up this opportunity is disturbing. It’s on a silver platter. Even Gardy doesn’t want LNP to start.

span, pridie, tolbert, buscher…of these 4 which one will be the 13th position player…damn rough having to carry 12 pitchers…costs one good position player

mj1 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

my choice would be tolbert , as we already have 5 of/dh

mj1 says:

maybe harris should go down to AAA and keep span…play both span and gomez r/l for awhile ….would be interesting

Harris has not showed anything yet this ST offensively or Defensively.

Jimmy Jam says:

No….Span has no experience in the Dome.

Funny about Tim Tschida. You gotta luv Spring Training.

Pav003 says:

I agree Slowey should be 5 after tonight.

lookatthosetwins says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

I think the 5th spot was Slowey’s to lose, and early it looked like he might do just that, but with these last 3 starts, I can’t imagine him not winning that spot.

lookatthosetwins says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

If we’re basing it on defense, I think I’d take the guy who’s faster and has a better arm over the guy with more
AAA experience.

Pav003 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

I like both, but my feeling is it will be Gomez just based on potential, but I would like to see him learn the catcher and the other guys name for future reference.

romer says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Thanks for the Kubel update, La Velle.

Sounds, however, like he loafed it and didn’t score in time on the Lamb blunder.

Pav003 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

mj1 I agree. Doesn’t seem to be much difference between LNP and harris right now. give Tolbert a shot.

mj1 says:

id like to see tolbert start at 2nd for a few days…see what happens

Pav003 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

I think young has potential to hit for more power though. Homerdome isn’t that pitcher friendly.

Craig says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Hopefully, Twins fans are beginning to understand that Delmon Young is not a home-run hitter. He hit 13 HR in 645 AB last season, playing in a much more home-run friendly park, than the Metrodome.

I expect 8-9 HR this year. He is a good singles and doubles hitter. A real good line drive hitter. Very quick hands. I like him.

flatblade says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Topics of the day: From what I’ve seen and heard Gomez is electric. He will make a lot of mistakes and make some mental errors, but he is the kind of aggressive speed merchant that doesn’t come around very often. Unless he goes in the tank for the next ten days, he starts the season in CF. Due to the glut of of center fielders in the system, I think the Twins should give Span a fresh start in another organization. Trade him for a raw high-upside infielder or perhaps a pitcher.

I was really hoping for Casilla to win the 2B job. I think, right now, he is a better leadoff hitter than Gomez. He also has great speed, but doesn’t seem to change the game the way Gomez does. If the plan is to make him the ‘09 SS, that is fine.

Everett is a real SS, not a utility guy. According to the fielding metrics that were quoted by Bill James, he is the best defensive SS since Ozzie Smith. He may have lost a little, but Punto is not in his league as a shortstop.

I’m not that impressed with any of the 25th man candidates. I like Pridie the best, but the team really doesn’t need six outfielders. To carry Jones, Busher, Ruiz, Pridie or Tolbert and use them as late-inning pinch hitters is foolish bordering on irrational. If somebody’s primary job is to pinch-hit, it should be a veteran. What the Twins need is a RH platoon partner for Lamb, who is a vet and has some power and versatility. I hope someone like that is cut in the final days and the Twins pick him up.

On the subject of Carlos Gomez’s projected lack of durability caused by excessive height:
Cal Ripkin Jr. and Lou Gehrig were the most durable players ever and both were tall.

Pav003 says:

March 20th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Lack of durability is a concern for me with Gomez, not based on his height though, more the fact he looks a little out of control out there sometimes. Sliding when not needed.

He did, however, say that Monroe would be used some against righthanders during the season, based on who’s hot, who’s slumping and who needs a day off.

worst thing I’ve read on this blog in weeks. Scary, scary bad news for Kubel’s future. This is only bad because I fear that Monroe is not all that good, and that Kubel actually is pretty good, but these hunches of Gardy’s aren’t my favorite part of his management.

(someone teach me how to use italics and I will….sorry)(La Velle, thanks for the mention in your earlier post, but now I feel pressure to actually sound smart)

I saw david ortiz mentioned again in the beginning of the blog. can we all please get past the fact that he is in boston. it happens people get over it. sometimes get better when they leave.

I don’t know of a mlb team that carries 6 OF. seems like a lot when two of them (cuddy and young) are in the middle of the order. I wish they would have given young more time out there in the spring to see if he can play there. any of these guys will be better than alex cole.

I think this lineup is better than last year, but starting pitching has taken a step or two backwards.

HR projections for the 2008 Twins:

Regulars:
9 - Mauer
27 - Morneau
4 - Harris
17 - Lamb
2 - Harris
8 - Young
3 - Gomez
15 - Cuddyer
18 - Monroe

Reserves:
5 - Kubel
3 - Tolbert
0 - Punto
0 - Redmond

9 - Others

120 - Total

I put Harris in as the regular, because I know you guys prefer him to Punto. I like to make all of you happy.

You may be right that Ripkin and Gehrig (and Jerry Rice) are anomalies, but I’d like more examples of shorter ironmen to prove that those shorter ironmen aren’t the real anonalies.

Morneau, the slow type, is having a down ST….and is leading the team in RBI’s again.

Gomez the rookie type has a horrible OBP for a leadoff hitter……and is leading the team in runs scored.

Young, the singles type……has a .487 SLG.

Gomez is fun to watch. It would be interesting to see when he gets on base with less that two outs how often he scores.

Gomez’s OBP may not be prototypical Leadoff numbers but he seems to score evertime he gets on.

bat22,

Greenberg was a big guy. Ruth was supposedly 6′2. The rest of those you mention were probably under 6′ tall. Mantle was about 5′10″, though he was listed at 6ft. Willie Mays was at least an inch shorter than Mantle.

My brother is no taller than 5′11″. I saw him standing next to Lew Ford and talking to him. He was about 2 inches taller than Lew. Lew is listed as 6′. It was funny.

Craig says:

T says:

The loss of Castillo is a big negative but otherwise this lineup should be better

No. It’s not. He could barely run towards the end there. By his own admission he could only run “full speed” in key moments if he saved it by nut huffing out other times.

With a runner on third, Gomez took off for second and didn’t draw a throw - but he dove into second anyway!
As long as he cleans up his slide and doesn’t go in headfirst I can live with it. And like the guy said, he has to slide to stop moving. Otherwise he’d just charge right past the base.

Can’t wait to see this kid play everyday. I hope it’s this season, I hate anticipation.

span has had years to do it….he will end up being traded.

Somebody has to want Span first. A good spring may raise his trade value, but I don’t expect anything spectacular. At best a minor league swap.

I could see them taking Jones and Span north and let Buscher, Tolbert, and Gomez have a bit more time in AAA. THeyr’e rebuilding at the moment, so take Jones and Span and give them their “last chance” so to speak.

Span at one point was Hunter’s heir apparent. Now he’s gone, so let’s see if Span can actually do it.
