Twins-Rangers postgame

Posted on April 26th, 2008 – 12:11 AM
By La Velle

Ron Gardenhire held a brief post game presser tonight because he was really upset with some things that went on tonight.

Frankly, the Twins should have won this one 12-3.

Nick Blackburn gave the Rangers a diet of first pitch fastballs in the third inning and let them back in the game.

Mike Lamb needs to start hitting.

Delmon Young didn’t have a good game. Gardy suggested that he threw to the wrong base three times. I thought it was twice, plus the ball he overran in the third for an error. Young also chased some bad pitches.

But he wasn’t alone. A few other hitters chased bad pitches late in the game, and the lack of professional at-bats after leadoff hitters reached base in the late innings will lead to losses most of the time.

Jason Kubel hit ANOTHER ball hard that was caught.

There were rumors flying during the game that the Rangers were going to call up Sidney Ponson to start on Saturday. That will be entertaining. But it’s all on Scott Baker to prove he can be a stopper and keep the Twins’ skid from becoming a real losing streak.

I didn’t get to are the game tonight, what was the problem with Blackburn in the 3rd?
It seems that first pitch strikes would be a good thing, especially considering Blackburn’s style of pitching. Were the fastballs just bad pitches, or does Gardy have a problem with the way he’s pitching in general?

There’re some good hitters on the Rangers.

Whose fault is it for the first pitch FB’s, Mauer’s?

Big relief. I just had a near panic attack.

I was on MLB.com and saw Ponson’s picture in the probable pitchers. He was wearing a Twins cap (the other pitcher’s photo was blank and listed as TBD). I was 100% positive he was gone, but there he was. I freaked out and thought I was mistaken and we had him in the minors somewhere or we somehow had got him back.

I couldn’t find any info on MLB.com, so I came here and found out he was supposed to get called up for the Rangers. When I went back to check, sure enough, there was a rangers team logo above his head.

Thank you La Velle for that little blub, you saved me one long and sleepless night.

Mauer calls the pitch but the pitcher has the final say in what he throughs

What I didn’t like was the location - that whole third inning, Blackburn was belt / mid-thigh high with the fastball.

It looked like he was pitching with the “I’m way ahead; just throw strikes” approach & stopped throwing GOOD strikes.

Gardenhire should be upset that Rincon is still a Twin.

2008 Twins = Last place by September. Just think of where they would be if they were rebuilding. Lamby = TBat.

Shaun says:

I think the problem was that Gardy kept Blackburn in there to let him blow the lead. At one point the Rangers had 7 straight singles off Blackburn. When it got to 5-3 I would’ve pulled him based on the fact he was throwing those nice meatballs over the plate. Luckily nothing was hit out of the park.

Is there a website where I can follow the Twins’ minor league teams - boxscores, recaps, and overall statistics?

johnetx says:

BD is dead on…location, location, location. Mauer would put the target down low and Blackburn would pitch above it right down the middle. Looked to me like he lost his concentration. Just can’t pitch batting practice no matter how big a lead. Of course our undiciplined swinging at anything in the last few innings didn’t help. I like the matchup tonight, though, Baker vs. Ponson. Twins time for batting practice?

Try this one: http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/mlb/minorleagues/team_index.jsp?c_id=min

Schmidy says:

I don’t know about you guys, but Mike Lamb is doing nothing for me. He’s batting below 200 and his defense has been ugly. There were a few balls that got by him last night that a good 3B’man would have had. To me, it doesn’t look like he even wants to play for the Twins and a few of his comments have reinforced this. Maybe they should start giving this Brian Buscher kid a shot. He may provide a spark that the veteran Lamb is definitely not providing right now.

The Twins have a punchless offense that is getting really difficult to watch. It looks to be a long summer of baseball this year.

Shaun says:

Twins are only a half game of the Tigers now. Wow that didn’t take long!

Schmidy says:

April 26th, 2008 at 8:56 am

Does anyone know much about this Luke Hughes kid from AA New Britain? He’s a 2nd baseman with 7 HR and is batting .367. He was a minor league all-star last year - but I haven’t heard much about him before. Lavelle - any insight for us?

dayoldbread says:

April 26th, 2008 at 9:05 am

Maybe it’s the Twins new curse…Since Koskie we haven’t been able to find a 3rd baseman - Cuddy - terrible at the plate and endless errors. Punto - terrible terrible terrible bat, but little to no errors. And now Mike Lamb…sub .200 AVE and yeah, errors every couple/few games and lack of range. What’s up with us at that position???

dayoldbread says:

April 26th, 2008 at 9:07 am

Seriously, our search for a solid 3rd baseman resembles that of the Bears QB search - with no end in sight!

Shaun says:

Kurse of Koskie!

Boneyard says:

April 26th, 2008 at 9:34 am

There is no curse at 3B. The Twins simply have not made a real attempt to find a legit 3B. Batista, Punto, and Lamb (remember, he has never nailed down a full time job at the major league level and he’s 31) are not good efforts by the FO.

BC Beneke says:

I still haven’t heard… what is the story with Gomez?

And while Gardenhire is having Little Nicky Punterrible play with his bathroom Caulk to get in the games, and missing his little Denard Span…

GARDENHIRE COST US THE GAME LAST NIGHT BY PITCHING Juan GONE WITH THE WIN Rincon last night.

That piece of crap can’t handle the pressure of anything other than a meaningless blowout… so if Gardenhire would get his head out of his ass for just a little while and pitch the wrong pitcher to get 40 million on this staff we might have had a shot to come back!!!

So this was as much Gardenhire’s fault as anyone.

And if we are going to be blaming the hitting for this on any level when is Gardenhire going to look down the bench at Vavra who has no freaking reason to be in the major league as anything more than a paying fan?

Carlos G says:

April 26th, 2008 at 10:03 am

I hate to be the voice of moderation on Blackburn’s night… But, gee, I watched a totally different Blackburn than others did. The kid let it get away late in the 3rd inning, but it shouldn’t have reached that point, and otherwise had yet another great outing. And, even the third inning would not have been that bad if he had either good defense or good breaks in that inning. Let me describe it for you that didn’t see it.

Laird looks bad but hits a 1-2 slider 4″ off the plate about 70 feet to 3rd; no play for Lamb (maybe Nickie makes the play)

Broussard hits an 0-1 FB about 2″ off the plate the opposite way, right past Lamb (Nickie would make that play; should have been DP)

Kinsler hits an 0-0 Slider belt high but 2″ off the plate for a ground ball hit up the middle; probably no play for even “Adam-I-got-range-Everett”

Young battles a 7 pitch at bat on a 3-2 pitch hits a ground ball past Lamb; DY over runs to put guys at 2nd and 3rd; Nickie makes that play and it is 3 outs and no runs scored.

As it is, we have 2 runs in and dumb fielding puts it at 2nd and 3rd. Now, Blackburn is feeling his confidence slide and his pitching changed the rest of the inning. The next 3 guys hit line drives to the OF until a TX baserunning gaffe turns into a DP and then Blackburn strikes out the next guy.

As a pitcher, you need to believe your guys will make plays behind you. In the 3rd, the Twins let him down with plays they didn’t make and should have and with errors and throws to wrong bases that they did make.

I don’t put this bad inning on Blackburn. This was the type of game where I and others like to point out defense. It isn’t all about scoring runs. In fact, there are contributors to these blogs who admit to not liking low scoring wins. Well, here you had the opposite. You should like the fact we got 5 runs, I guess, even if the defense sucked and gave us a loss we shouldn’t have had.

Good defense in the 3rd inning and we win 5-0. I would put Nicky at 3b and Tolbert/Everett at ss in games that Blackburn pitches. He gets a lot of ground balls and they need to be turned into outs, not big innings.

I am going to start the Rick Anderson for Manager call. Who is with me?

Rick Anderson has proved himself to be a guru for all things pitching. If we do not give him more money or a promotion, we may very well lose him to another team who has enough sense to hire him as a manager.

Also, rid this team of Vavra!

mj1 says:

April 26th, 2008 at 10:43 am

once again lavelle, what does gardy attibute these weak bats and all these weak ground balls up the middle to?? i would love to hear his thinking on this subject, because this lineup on paper looks like one that should compete nite in and nite out…i never would have thought this lineup could be so punchless and have so many guys slumping at a time–poor at bats, poor two out hitting, no power, and its early enough in the season to straighten it out, but i dont think they can go one heck of alot longer like this, and it will be too late and we will just be playing for practice and hopes of next year….not a very nice thought

mj1 says:

April 26th, 2008 at 10:45 am

i think rick anderson is too close to gardy to ever take his job-not sure that would be a good move anyway- he is just damn good at what hes doing and i dont think i would mess with that at this point…they just need to start hitting again and winning and we will be ok and we will get off gardys ass and he will go back to being the good guy that he is…

Players have to make plays and be accountable. Yes, the manager has to take some blame too, but these guys are supposed to be professionals. Maybe somebody needs to step up and be a real leader in that clubhouse, instead of the “ah shucks” kind of guys.

JJ –
The twins, in general, have had an above average to exceptional starting pitching every year, even when we do not have the most recognizable names. This also includes an above average bullpen on a yearly basis. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, ie. Boof, Ortiz, Rincon (although he was pretty good for a time). RA has proved himself worthy of his job time and time again. And yes I agree that it may be dedrimental to mess up a good thing. But, just because he gets appointed to manager does not mean that he losses all control of the pitching.

As for RA being too close to Gardy, well wasnt Gardy really close to TK?

My memory never serves me well, perhaps a few too many dead brain cells after a few too many lagers, but I seem to think that Ponson dominated some pretty good Twins hitters when he was with the O’s.

What would make any of us think he won’t destroy this sorry slough of sluggers?

Punto has started 8 straight games. What the @#&%???? Didn’t Gardy learn ANYTHING from our below .500 season??? #1) Punto sux.
#2) The fans hate Punto, and fans pay for salaries.
#3) Punto sux.
#4) We have Tolbert. Why have him on the major leage roster if he’s gonna ride pine? Maybe if he was batting Punto-esque we could bench him. But…he’s hitting around .400. Ummm….WHAT?????

The Twins management is too inbred. This promote from within has left us with a sterile group all thinking the same. Need new manager and for sure a new hitting coach. This singles game is boring and I agree the Twins in the cellar this year. A new manager might kick some but and make some decisions. Gardy has his favorites like Punto and Rincon that he refuses to admit are only AAA material

etcdelaware says:

mj1, players are right, order is a bit screwy. Can’t bat Mauer anything lower then 3rd. I’d rather have it this way,
Gomez
Mauer
Morneau
Cuddyer
Kubel
Young
Buscher
Harris
Tolbert

What’s up with Young, this guy should be our #3 but he’s looking like a #8 hitter. He looked so polished in spring training, now he looks overmatched by everyone. I know he’s better than that.

MSLY says:

April 26th, 2008 at 11:48 am

I like the decisions by the front office this year (mostly, not a big fan of Everett and Lamb, but that is with 20/20 hingsight). The decisions I have a major problem with is Gardy’s — Playing Punto too much, not playing Tolbert enough, bullpen decisions (major problem), etc…

Aside from hitting (Vavra), Gardy has made some horrible decisions, and it is time to start asking whether he will be held accountable, much like we are asking/claiming that Vavra should be held accountable for bad hitting

JE says:

April 26th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

For all of you calling for Gardy to be fired, don’t get your hopes up. He has done way too much for this organization. He is a very good manager. Obviously he’s going to make bad decisions. There are 162 games, its bound to happen. And as far as people complaining about Vavra.. How much do you think he has to do with hitters struggling? These are major league hitters you are talking about.

Chris says:

April 26th, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Lets face it between “Giveaway Sundays” which is what I call the lineup on any Day game. And the fact Tolbert is being replaced in the lineup by Nick Punto has me watching FSN (Wisconsin). Nick Punto’s time in Minnesota should have ended last Oct. I’d like to see some worth while guys playing daily. The fact we paid 3-4 mil for Everett and I think Twins management was excited about this is a joke.

Heres my lineup…

1.Gomez, CF
2.Mauer, C (is not a 3 guy)
3.Cuddy, RF
4.Morneau,1b
5.Young, LF
6.Kubel, DH
7.Lamb, 3b
8.Tolbert, SS (2,8,9 would all work in the order.)
9. Harris, 2b

Twins Fan says:

April 26th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

The Twins hitting coach is doing a bad job. All the Twins hitters have been regressing under his coaching.

As for pitching, it’s been OK except for the last few games. Yesterday, Blackburn proved he is human. Rincon has cracked under pressure several times now.

The New and Improved Craig says:

April 26th, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Gardy wants his best hitter (Mauer) batting 3rd and his best power hitter (Morneau) batting 4th. There is nothing wrong with that. He also wants the best fielder, currently available to him, to play SS (Punto). Nothing wrong with that either.

The New and Improved Craig says:

April 26th, 2008 at 1:43 pm

Young and Gomez have been impatient free swingers since they started playing the game. How is Vavra supposed to change that overnight?

Monroe bats like Monroe always has. Ditto Harris. Neither have been very good hitters. They still aren’t. Not Vavra’s fault

Lamb is about 33 years old. He’s not a known doper. Maybe he’s taking a natural career fade. Not Vavra’s fault, if that’s the case.

Everett will hit like Everett has always hit. He will hit like Juan Castro. Don’t blame Vavra.

Mauer, Morneau and Tolbert are doing just fine. Cuddyer has been injured. Redmond has hardly played.

Probably the only possible case against Vavra, could be the inept hitting of Punto and Kubel. He has worked with those two for awhile now, with little progress. The possibility exists that those two, just aren’t very good hitters. 2006 may have just been an anomaly for Punto. An odd blip on the radar. Kubel just has never given any sustained indication, that he is a major league hitter.

In conclusion, I would say Vavra has done an excellent job, considering what he has had to work with.

mickey mental says:

April 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

“excellent” may be overstating the case. and i think there’s still hope for kubel. but otherwise your words ring true — good analysis, craig.

MSLY says:

April 26th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

When Vavra is given the responsibility of hitting coach, he should be held responsible if the team cant hit. It is very close-minded to think that there is an excuse for every player on the team. The only slack I would give Vavra is if this was a new problem. But it is not. Last year was a discrace for twins hitting, and it is looking like year may be similar. Coaches must be held responsible for their players not performing, no matter what the reason!

Q says:

April 26th, 2008 at 2:28 pm

I don’t have a real problem with Vavra, coaches can only do so much.
But, an excellent job? No, an excellent job would be to have at least some players exceeding expectations. The way I see it, some players are meeting expectations and many others are below expectation. And,as MSLY pointed out, this is not a 23 game problem, this goes back through last year.

johnrambo says:

I’m not big on stats, but I don’t tell anyone to stuff anything. If the Twins had not abandoned their former approach of fielding and fundamentals, the team OBP wouldn’t even bother me that much. However, if you put sloppy fielders out there, you better be prepared to score, and score a lot.

romer says:

“To me, it doesn’t look like he even wants to play for the Twins…”

Schmidy, I don’t know what you’re exactly referring to regarding Lamb. Looks to me like he may be trying too hard at times, especially at the plate.

And his defense is pretty much what everyone expected.

So, to me, it’s all about his miserable offense. And I don’t think he’s that good an athlete to play everyday.

So right now, I’d use him at DH, and replace Young with Kubel —- especially after Young’s timid defense last night.

thrylos98 says:

Stolen bases, like home runs, do not correlate closely to total team runs scored, but neither are a bad thing. Check it out yourself.

The New and Improved Craig says:

April 26th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Bill Smith put together the old Calvin Griffith formula from the 1960’s: Good hitting, good pitching and indifference to fielding and fundamentals. Unfortunately, the big hitting hasn’t shown up.

Gardy has said that it has been a struggle to get some of the guys acquired from the other teams, to care about fielding and fundamentals. That’s not how they were taught to play the game.

bufftwins says:

April 26th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Just like myself and a lot of us have been saying all April. Lack of professional quality at bats and no patience at the plate is what will kill this team all year long if things don’t change.

ARMMAX says:

April 26th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Rincon needs to be a long reliver in a losing game that is blown anyway.
Other than that he has proven worthless. Gardy needs to step back from the touchy-feely and make decisons BASED on performance, not on numbers guesses. Punto is a good fielder and not a hitter. He needs to be on a good hitting team. I think vavra needs to go. If the whole team is struggling. all at the same time for a week or so then I wouldN’T say kill the coach. But the front office has tried to improve the batting line up. And if the team still is struggling someone has to be held accounable. I can’t beleive all 15 or so hitters are still in a slump since last year. SOME THING HAS TO GIVE TO SHAKE THIS TEAM UP A LIITLE.

romer says:

April 26th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Here’s the BEGINNING AND END of what’s drastically wrong with the offense:

Lamb, Cuddy, and Young as a group were reasonably expected to hit 50-60 HR’s and bat .290 or better.

This production has essentially been TOTALLY absent so far. (0 home runs, .224 BA)

Whose fault? The initial focus HAS to be on Vavra, with consideration of the Cuddy injury.

Conclusion? Way too early to tell.

Karlee says:

April 26th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

I don’t get why you guys are attacking Punto.

Can we please scream about how Mike Lamb is a big piece of crap? If you want to talk about someone who can’t hit OR HELP ON THE FIELD

IE: HAVING A BALL GO BETWEEN HIS LEGS!

Ugh.

romer says:

April 26th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Given the Twins good pitching, I’m not worried about 5 hitters — M&M, Harris, Gomez, Kubel. They’ve all shown they’re pretty much okay, though all have had their ups-and-downs.

What worries me is:

1) Like I just said — Lamb, Young, Cuddy.

2) SS. Using Punto too much depletes him as a fresh substitute. Let’s see how a healthy Everett does.

3) Too much steady diet (though itinerant) of Monroe and Rincon.

1) Vavra has to solve this problem.

2) Gardy has to use Tolbert and Buscher more.

3) Dump Rincon now. Perkins, who has excelled in the pen, couldn’t be any worse. Unless Monroe starts producing regularly, bring up Span. He’ll be delighted to be in the majors again — even on the bench.

Karlee

No one can defend Lamb’s play so far. But just because he hasn’t played up to expectations it doesn’t make Punto a better player. I like Punto, as a role player. Injuries have contributed to him playing more, but a lot of fans think as long as there are other options (Buscher, Tolbert) Gardy should keep Punto in a role more suited to him: Utility player, Late Game Defensive Replacement.

You have to wonder how many of these hitters will be back in 2009. Cuddyer, Morneau, Mauer, and Lamb, have contracts. They will be back. The team has an option on Redmond. I’d keep Redmond.

I’d take Tolbert and Span back. Casilla is marginal, and probably the only prospect in AAA. He has some potential and deserves another look.

Delmon, Gomez and Pridie? Goodbye, if the Twins can get better players.

Punto can come back, if he signs cheap.

Morales, Buscher, Everett, Harris, Macri, Kubel, Monroe? Blech…… Good Riddance.

Hitters on the 40 man roster:

Catchers:
Joe Mauer
Jose Morales
Mike Redmond

Infielders:
Brian Buscher
Alexi Casilla
Adam Everett
Brendan Harris
Mike Lamb
Matt Macri
Justin Morneau
Nick Punto
Matt Tolbert

Outfielders:
Michael Cuddyer
Carlos Gomez
Jason Kubel
Craig Monroe
Jason Pridie
Denard Span
Delmon Young

Wow Craig. Goodbye gomez, DY?? Are you kidding? These two will be CF, LF for many years. Not goodbye; say “hello”.

Gomez will be the best CF we ever had. I like hyperbole. These blogs are so full of it. But, he certainly could be. He is 22 for crying out loud and you want to say goodbye. The FASTEST player in the majors. Sheesh. I thought I was liking the new Craig.

You’d take Span over Gomez? You want to get rid of Kubel? and you bring Punto back. Wow!

Remind me not to hire you as GM of my next MLB team.

JP I agree but people make him out to be more worthless than sidney ponson. (gotta bring him up, ya know)

If he isnt on the team next year im signing punto onto my co-ed softball team.

we will rule the world.
hahaha

Like I said, goodbye, if the Twins can find better players. I sure haven’t been impressed with either. They are both young, so they get some benefit of the doubt. I don’t care either way if they return, or don’t.

I never critizes Gardy… but where was he and Rick Anderson or Joe Mauer yesterday in the third inning? Why didn’t someone go to the mound and talk to Blackburn and calm him down!!!

When are they going to get rid of Rincon? He has become the new LaTroy Hawkins (he’s the Yankees problem now, snicker, snicker). Gardy should have played Nathan. Delmon Young sucked last night, I hope we don’t see a repeat performance. I’m hoping for a repeat from the M&M boys. GO TWINS!!!

Hi Karlee,

I am cranky. I am just a crabby old man who REALLY needs a cookie!

I want to know if you can sing, Karlee. I have a song that I want a sweet young woman to sing to me. Can you sing? Do you have audio on your web page?

The club obviously feels there is no need for increased offense. They let Thomas go to Oakland with out a peep. They’ve not indicated any interest in Bonds. Can’t figure either of these things out, except the club feels they’ve got the right mix. So far, it doesn’t look like it, but maybe it will work out.

Let’s look at the wonderful job the Twins’ management and Gardy have done the past 2 years bringing in players”
Ponson
Ortiz
Monroe
Everett
Harris
Lamb
Well done guys!!!!!!
Players snubbed (and cheap):
Mike Sweeney
Frank Thomas

Keep the minor league system execs and scouts and clean house and that includes the manager who has coached the last two years like he is chewing Ambien during games.

Karlee,

Here it is:

There’s a saying old says that love is blind,
Still we’re often told, “Seek and ye shall find.”
So I’m going to seek a certain lad I’ve had in mind.
Looking everywhere, haven’t found him yet;
He’s the big affair I cannot forget.
Only man I ever think of with regret.
I’d like to add his initials to my monogram.
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?
Chorus:
There’s a somebody I’m longing to see,
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who’ll watch over me.
I’m a little lamb who’s lost in the wood.
I know I could always be good
To one who’ll watch over me.
Although he may not be the man some girls think of as handsome.
To my heart he carries the key.
Won’t you tell him please to put on some speed,
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone who’ll watch over me.
Repeat chorus
