Twins take on Toronto with a different look up the middle

Posted on May 14th, 2008 – 6:33 PM
By La Velle

It’s not surprising that Twins manager Ron Gardenhire has Matt Tolbert at second and Alexi Casilla at shortstop tonight against Toronto.

Brendan Harris has been working hard before games on turning the double play, but failed to turn one in yesterday’s game.  I sense that Gardy likes Harris’ bat in the lineup but it’s hard for him to tolerate missed plays in the field. Besides, Tolbert needs to play.

And Gardy sees this as a good spot to give Casilla a chance. So he has two speedy, athletic players in the middle infield tonight.

Jason Kubel is in at designated hitter tonight.

Toronto (19-22): 1. Brad Wilkerson, RF. 2. Aaron Hill, 2B. 3. Alex Rios, CF. 4. Scott Rolen, 3B. 5. Matt Stairs, DH. 6. Lyle Overbay, 1B. 7. Shannon Stewart, LF. 8. Greg Zaun, C. 9. Marco Scutaro, SS. Pitching: Roy Halladay.

Twins (20-18): 1. Carlos Gomez, CF. 2. Matt Tolbert, 2B. 3. Joe Mauer, C.  4. Justin Morneau, 1B. 5. Michael Cuddyer, RF. 6. Jason Kubel, DH. 7. Delmon Young, LF. 8. Mike Lamb, 3B. 9. Alexi Casilla, SS. Pitching: Boof Bonser.

I hope Casilla plays great ball why he is up…I get the sense he has a chance to really latch onto that job if Everett can’t get healthy.

Crap. Gotta go out tonight. Really want to know how Boof and Casilla do.

Stu says:

May 14th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

WHY is Harris sitting? Guys miss plays every now and then. Oh well. I’m just not a big fan of Alexi Casilla I guess.

PJS says:

May 14th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Stu, I completely agree. I’m fine with a spot start for Casilla, but I don’t get why Harris isn’t in there everyday. Does he pick it like Luis Castillo? No. But we traded for him for his bat, and some sacrifice defensively should be expected. And if he’s working to improve and not a complete liability, I don’t see why he’s not out there everyday.

AaronK says:

May 14th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Well, maybe if Harris could actually hit we could ignore his defensive mistakes. However, he is nowhere close to being good enough offensively to just ignore his defensive shortcomings.

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Casilla/Gomez 9-1 in the order could make for some fun baserunning if both can get on base at the same time tonight.

As far as the lineup, it’s Roy Halladay on the mound. It really doesn’t matter who the Twins put out there, he’s a dang fine pitcher.

I’m still waiting for Young to get some time on the bench to straighten things out in his head. If not this series, then definately in an NL park (get Kubel and Monroe some at-bats)

Miller for life says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Good line up, lets hope Casiilla learned how to catch the ball, other then that he brings good athletic ability to this line up, imagine him and Gomez on base at the same time

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Ha! Wife says to heck with it, I can watch my game!!

Harris didn’t merely miss a play or make an error, he looked incompetent on that DP attempt last night.

Gardy was embarrassed. I wonder if Harris’s leg is 100% yet. They subbed for him Monday night late.

Pete D says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

“Besides, Tolbert needs to play.”

Why?

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Poor Casilla, he blew it…….

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

I give it maybe three innings before Gardy pulls Casilla, slides Tolbert over and puts in Harris.

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Rios and Gomez are kind of similar players, also with similar stats.

dano says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Oh great. One of THOSE umps.

dano says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

we got four guys that if get on base they should steal bases agenst Roy Halladay

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

That probably explains the “stacked” lineup with Casilla/Tolbert/Gomez

The New and Improved Craig says:

AaronK says:

“Well, maybe if Harris could actually hit we could ignore his defensive mistakes. However, he is nowhere close to being good enough offensively to just ignore his defensive shortcomings.”

That sums it up perfectly.

Need to throw Rolen a tight one……

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Well, that Casilla error is now meaningless (well, it’s 3-0)

Dangit Boof.

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Frickin’ wife. Why didn’t we go out….

Nora says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

You gotta be kidding! These guys have gotta be cheating somehow. I thought the Blue Jays can’t hit! All of sudden they are the Red Sox against us. LOL

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

“Poor Casilla, he blew it…….”

I missed it. What happened?

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

No big curve from the Boof yet. Next time, he’d better bring it to the park for the 1st inning.

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

The first play of the night was a grounded to Casilla. He had to dive for it, but it tipped off his glove.

If he makes the play, it’s 3-0 and the innings over with the Rolen out.

But Boof isn’t doing himself any favors.

Razz says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

This is quite the hole Bonser dug with Halladay on the mound.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

“Frickin’ wife. Why didn’t we go out….”

Haha.

twinsfan32 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:27 pm

Boof is terrible. please send him to the bullpen or the minors. just somewhere other than the starting rotation. he sucks

David says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

With Halladay pitching this game is over.

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

If Casilla makes the play, Boof doesn’t pitch from the stretch. Who knows how the rest of the inning plays out.

Matt "way up" Stairs says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

BAM! WHAT! Jays time baby! I’m calling another shot later in this game, little fellas so WATCH IT.

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Bonser taking on Radke’s old habit of sucking it up in the first inning.

RyanW says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Just looking at the pitching matchup, I could tell this was going to be a long night… maybe we can get Halliday to throw a bunch of pitches and get him out in the 7th or so… but with all those lefties in their pen, it might be pretty hopeless at this point.

Boof needs to be evaluated this season, if he dosent get it together, we need to consider moving him to the pen.

Col. Nathan R. Jessup says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

The only question with Bonser is if he is a decent inning #6 or 7 reliever. He has been excrement save for about a 2 month lukewarm streak two years ago. The decisions when Baker returns seem easier than the media would have you believe. The only spot open to question should be Slowey’s. Can he hack the rotation or do they need to find another starter.

For an organization that creams themselves on development of pitchers…who are they?

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

So apparently if you can’t hit him…hit him.

Not Terry Ryan says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Mauer Power?

Krissy says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Well thats one way to get the pitcher out of the game!

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Of course Halliday finishes his pitches, but he doesn’t look like he finishes getting set to play defense, standing on one leg when the ball crosses the plate.

Daniel1966 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Gardy’s Girly man pitching philosophy refuses to pitch up and in….4-0 after top half of the first. Incredible!!

Twins fan since '61 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Boof Lite is a joke. His weight loss made no difference. He is the worst excuse for a pitcher to wear a Twins unie since the mid-90’s.
Give him a bus ticket to Rochester and get him the hades out of here.

Cuddyer with an infield hit. Hold on a sec…a pig just buzzed my window.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

It’s not reasonable to expect all these inexperienced pitchers to immediately be consistent. Boof will become more consistent, as he gains more experience.

T says:

T - did you see that one pitch by DiceK?

See. This is why they need to bench Young.

Gomez responded, Kubel’s responded (in a few ABs granted), it could work for Young.

Razz says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Looking like Monroe’s success has lit a fire under Kubel’s a**!!

RyanW says:

Atta boy Kubes…

Witht the way this series has been going, I thought for sure that Shannon Stewart was going to throw Cuddy out from the left field fence with his noodle arm.

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

“Can somebody throw half a pitch?”

No, but somebody can have a half thought.

Ben D says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Come on Young tie this game

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Kubel was supposedly peeved that he wasn’t playing. Good! Bench time was a rude slap in the face. It got his attention, and got some adrenaline flowing.

JJ says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Play Monroe and Kubel and let young pick splinters out of his ass.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

“Witht the way this series has been going, I thought for sure that Shannon Stewart was going to throw Cuddy out from the left field fence with his noodle arm.”

That’s funny.

David says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Matt Stair has killed the Twins forever, I wonder what his career numbers are against the Twins. Now if Boof can manage to not give up a run in the top of the 2nd.

Twins fan since '61 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Young has played in every game this year. He can’t hit a cut-off man and he is hitting .260 with no power. Yes, yes he has potential but right now he is a punch and judy hitter and kills almost as many rallies as Cudyer.
He needs to sit for a while. He reminds me a lot of Bombo Rivera- no power, speed, pretty good glove tons of potential but not much in the noggin.

Toby says:

That K pitch to Gomez was nasty.

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Gomez is still in the AL top 40 in BA. No great shakes, but not bad for a half-rookie who’s adjusting his approach at the plate.

It looks like he’s as good as the all-star Rios.

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Casilla. Pardon. Gomez showing off his wings.

Twins fan since '61 says:

How about Bonser, Lamb and Casilla in a trade for a sack of batting practice balls. Sounds like an even up trade! Seriously, Casilla was hitting .219 at Rochester! What are these geniuses thinking??? The left side of our infield is the worst in all of baseball. Heck the AA New Britain infielders can out hit and outfield our stiffs.

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

Thank you Jack Morris. Just what I was saying.

And while Jack’s talking, Boof comes in a little tight Rolen.

About time.

Toby says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Lamb is a .280 career hitter who just switched leagues it takes a while to adapt to the new pitchers. I swear twins fans go from “by god hes the mvp” to “can him” faster than any other fans in baseball.

Everett_Fan says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Now Harris is getting slammed?? Our only middle infielder who hit it out of the infield, please. The lineup tonight is weak. If Casilla can play D and hit a little better I would be happy to see his speed at short but Harris needs to play, forget Tolbert as an everyday player.

Razz says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

On that note…Boof for Cy Young!!!

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Casilla not looking good tonight. Four examples already:

1. 1st inning defensive miss on the grounder.
2. Took his time on his throw and gunned it to 1st last inning.
3. K. Could have at least swung at it.
4. Caught the popup this inning one-handed.

Why doesn’t he just kiss Gardy’s ass and play like a goody-twoshoes for a while…

Ben D says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

The New and Improved Craig says:

Toby,

You can go from the penthouse to the doghouse and back again in the blink of an eye, on this blog.

A single base hit or a half inning of good pitching, can change everything. We don’t mess around here. Total flexibility and the ability to change instantly, is a mandatory prerequisite to participate here.

Everett_Fan says:

Ben D, I don’t make calls. Harris is the more powerful hitter and always will be.

T says:

two inches outside on that pitch. cmon cuddy!

romer says:

Ben D says:

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Three inches outside, JP. Frickin’ ump, taking the bat out of MVP’s hands.

JP says:

either way romer, an obvious ball. then kubel hit it on the screws. but mj1 would probably say he popped out.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

“But Harris, unlike Lamb, isn’t a veteran with a track-record.”

That’s a good point, romer. Harris played full time for the first time last season. Mostly at SS. He’s never been a regular 2B in the majors.

Everett_Fan says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Batting averages are going up and down 20 points every series. Harris has numerous multi-hit games. He will be back to .280. by next week. He hits the ball harder, do you deny that?

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Lamb hasn’t been a regular either, but he has more major league experience at his position.

JJ says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Harris has 6 doubles and so does Tolbert. Harris has 46 more ab than Tolbert and Tolbert has a better glove. You may as well defend Everett and his dried up arm.

RyanW says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

“But Harris, unlike Lamb, isn’t a veteran with a track-record.”

The flip side of that argument is that he hit .286 in is first full season as a regular in the bigs last year. So Harris, unlike Lamb, has some potential to get better.

Everett_Fan says:

Do you mean Harris?

Razz says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

As much as we like to debate which of our middle IF’s and 3B men should play I think the reality is that none of them are that great at this point and none them are really standing out. So it makes sense that they all get to play the IF by commitee. Other than Morneau we really just have a bunch of what looks like utility IF’s.

RyanW says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Tolbert and Harris have pretty much the same OBP, SLG and OPS, Harris has a better fielding percentage and Zone Rating at 2B, Tolbert has a better Range Factor.

Stats do not clearly place one player above the other. All evaluations by posters on here are based on their own observations, preferences and biases.

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

I like the competition between Harris and Tolbert. Tolbert is a gamer. Harris needs to perform to keep his job. Both are still learning. I don’t care which one “wins”.

I got sat down recently, because I was starting to bitch about Lamb. But he’s hitting about .300 the last 10 days. AND, he’s a veteran professional type hitter. So more patience with him because he’ll come around.

Way to go Young.

Royster says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Romer, I agree on Lamb, same with Young. At the beginning of the season I thought this was a team that would improve as the season wears on, and if that’s true, they will be OK. After all no one thought they’d be in first place right now.

Razz says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

What the hell just happened in Young’s at bat? MLB Gameday said right fielder to catcher with Young out at first???

JJ says:

Casilla and Lamb need to be sent down to the minors and we need to call up Buscher and Plouffe.

Carlos G says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

That comes close to the ugliest half inning of the year. DY gets a bloop single, busted bat, swinging at ball 3 on a 2 ball count; then rounds 1st too far and gets thrown out RF with catcher covering 1st. Then, two very ugly strike outs. Wow, Casilla looks lost at the plate.

David says:

daniel you could see white YELLING at Young to get back. Young just stood there with a dumb look on his face. that was not white’s fault. on all Young.

Razz says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Thanks T

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Razz, Young gets bloop single as first baseman pursues. Young rounds first and forgets that a catcher can come up the line and cover first. AND he ignores his first base coach who was yelling at him to get back to first.

Royster says:

Plouffe? Plouffe? You’ve got to be kidding me!! Plouffe?

thrylos98 says:

It pains me, but I gotta say it: Boof is the weak link in the Twins’ rotation…

Razz says:

After last night and tonight if Young doesn’t sit tomorrow I’m going to start to think Gardy has gone soft.

What are they supposed to do when the player doesn’t listen? Tackle them?

Doug Munson says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Does anyone else feel Casilla needs to scrap the left handed hitting bit.He looks much more comfortable batting right handed. He’s fast enough to still get infield hits from the right side, but he can’t even putt the ball in play from the left side.

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Bonser looking strong finishing the 5th with 94 pitches.

sane says:

“You forgot one thing: Harris can’t turn the DP. Most important job by the 2B”

Craig, That is correct.

What is not clear is:
Can he develop that skill?
How soon?
Is there a physical limitation that prevents or slows his learning process?

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Doug, I wonder what Casilla’s splits are — especially his OBP splits.

RyanW says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

“You forgot one thing: Harris can’t turn the DP. Most important job by the 2B.”

Craig, I agree that is a flaw- but to point that out about Harris does not mean Tolbert is playing good defense at 2b. Tolbert has had a number of mental miscues at 2b, (see the throw to first with one out and guys on the corners early in the season, the runner on first moved to second and scored on a two-out base hit the next batter- it was little league stuff- no error, but cost the team at least one run in a close game). Also, Tolbert has his own issues turning double plays, the other night they broke down how he is haveing problems steping back or steping over the bag on his turn, which is making him a target for takout slides. If you want to make the “best fielding second basemen” argument, I would just go with Punto.

Daniel1966 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

T., Don’t give me that manure! The catcher followed him to first and where’s your coach. Couple that with Ullger being kept around to salve his wounds after losing his hitting job and you have inadequacy. Your coaches are your eyes and ears out there and these two are deaf and dumb!!

Jussi says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

Bonser hasn’t looked strong since his first couple of starts.

The New and Improved Craig says:

RyanW says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

“Your coaches are your eyes and ears out there and these two are deaf and dumb!!”

Are you serious? Did you see White? He can’t do anything except yell at the player to run/slide/stay.

If the player doesn’t listen or is slow to react there’s nothing more a coach can do.

Though I’d love to see you as a base coach. I have the mental image of you sticking your foot out to trip Young as he rounds first.

If you’re going to complain about that play at least go to the trouble to get your facts straight.

Delmon didn’t listen to White. And now he’s out. White couldn’t do anything except yell as loud as he could.

RyanW says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

I think our entire infield (with the exception of Morneau) will be a continual revolving door for most of the season. Which if played right could be ok.

Ben D says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Bottom line our 7,8,9 hitters have batted 6 times struck out 5 and had a dumb ass base running mistake.

Doug Munson says:

May 14th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

romer, I don’t think he has enough big league at bats for the stats to be worth anything.I’m just talking about his swing! I don’t ever recall him hitting the ball hard left handed.I think the Twins invisioned this slap hitting speedster who could take advantage of the turf, but he can’t even put the bat on the ball from the left side. And if there is any hope that he is part of the infield of the future there is only one more year of turf anyway.

romer says:

Holy Country Club, did you see Young laughing it up with Zahn (obviously over his baserunning mistake)?

Yuk-yuk, Delmon.

Hope Gardy gets wind of this.

Daniel1966 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Last year at Jacob’s field, after Chris Hintz pulled a similar base running gaffe, I called to Ullger as he returned to the dugout from my seat just over the Twin’s first base dugout inquiring what happened, his look and actions were his usual non-plussed. You will never convince me these guys are major league caliber coaches.

RyanW says:

May 14th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

I am so bored with this “pitch count” debate.

Is is possible that players are bigger and stronger than they used to be, so the average pitcher has to exert more energy per pitch, thus lowering his ability to throw more pitches?

Also, relief pitchers are MUCH better than they used to be. The point of the game is to win. Teams are paying relivers millions of dollars to hold leads or keep games close, why would they not use them? Not to mention the huge investment teams make with pitchers (Santana anyone?). Why not keep them fresh and injury free?

It is just such a dumb, boring, silly argument.

The New and Improved Craig says:

His minor league BA going into this year was .253. (top level AA)
He has below average quickness and made 32 errors last year on the limited plays he could get to.
Please stop telling me that he is Everett’s replacement - next year or EVER!

T says:

That’s perhaps the dumbest reasoning I’ve heard today…if not longer.

Major league umps, coaches, and players hear so much crap from fans during a game.

To think Ulger’s a bad coach because he didn’t trot over and discuss the last play with you is riddiculous.

Next you’ll call Mauer a bad hitter because he didn’t walk over and talk about his last AB when you were yelling from the stands.

Jussi says:

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

It didn’t sound like Gomez was even in the minors that long. I’ve heard some comments that Gomez’s “rawness” (is that a word) stems for how he was rushed through the Mets system.

T- I agree with you.I’m no Ullger fan, but I would think even less of him if he started debating the fans after every play on the field. The players and coaches probably don’t even hear 90% of the stuff fans say to them during the game. And even if they do they shouldn’r respond during the game.

RyanW says:

May 14th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Your absolutely right. So from now on Ulger should be sure and field questions from any fan who he is able to hear.

Because I’m sure that at a baseball game (especially on an ugly play as the one you are discussing) you are the only person yelling something at the coach.

Give it up. Seriously. At this point you’re coming off as that fan who once loved a player but now hates him because he didn’t sign your ball the last time you were at a game.

May 14th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Young’s out at first base on the trailer play was not a fundamental mistake, UNLESS the Blue Jays have used that play previously, and it was discussed at the pre-series meeting.

Most teams NEVER run that play - not worth the practice time.

If they do, it only works once (maybe twice) and from then on opponents will look for it and warn their coaches and hitters to be wary of it.
Without that warning, hitters are taught to round first aggressively and if the catcher beats the coaches alert to return to 1B, the play has a good to succeed the first time, if it is executed well.

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

So if the offense is to blame when the Twins lose to a “bad” pitcher, is it Boof’s fault that the Twins are on track to lose tonight to a “bad” offense?

romer says:

May 14th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

Daniel1966 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

TriniTwin says:

Carlos G says:

Speaking of baserunning, the one player that always runs the bases well is Mauer. I think Cuddy runs well most of the time. His stumble turned into somersault does come to mind. Morneau gets caught too often in “no man’s land”. Not recalling any other veteran positive or negatives.

Must be the player’s fault Kevin, Gardy is doing everything possible but there not listening.

If you think Gardy is responsible for a botched play in the field, or a poor pick-off throw…then you don’t know how baseball works.

A manager doesn’t have control of the game at every second. Sometimes (god forbid) the players actually have to think for themselves.

He can call for the hit and run, but the players have to execute.

kevlarstorm says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

T - I bow to the superior baseball knowledge that you have shown on this blog. You are too focused on what the players do and not on who puts them in that position. Who called for the pickoff? Who pinch hit Harris for Lamb? Who left Slowey in too long last night?…blah…blah….blah

Carlos G says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

I don’t advise it for your blood pressure, but if you look at gameday… Gomez had 5 balls and 1 strike. Morneau’s K pitch in inning 3 was in the other batter’s box. Not sure how accurate gameday is, but ump’s game matched that of the Twins… both not major league caliber tonight.

Blake says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

I’ve seen some pathetic games, but this one had it all. Lousy pitching, lousy defense, lousy base running and an Ump with two different strikes zones.

Using your logic Razz, why do managers ever get fired if they are so smart and its just the players fault for not listening?

Your oversimplifying the situation.

Gardy puts a lineup together, and call for specific plays and pitches. But it’s still up to the players to execute.

Where a manager runs into trouble is more in decisions such as pitching changes and how he assembles a lineup.

But Gardy should not be fired because Delmon Young over ran first base (or as is the case here got caught by a trick play)

sid says:

kevlarstorm,

One thing to remember when complaining about balls and Strikes from the living room,we don’t have a direct look at the plate.Did Runge miss some pitches? probably, but he’s still got the best look.Nothing bothers me more than when the announcer(mainly Dick Bremer) starts questioning the umps strike zone from up in the press box.And Dick has the same view as we do.

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Who called for the pickoff?

In this case? Since the runner broke early, I’d imagine it was either the Tolbert, Casilla, or Mauer that alerted Crain the runner was going early.

Lamb took third to field a potential throw from Mauer. If I’m not mistaken, Crain in that situation is supposed to charge the runner and force him one direction or the other (then throw to the appropriate base).

If you try and blame the wild throw by Crain on Gardy, you’re trying to hard.

That’s true Doug, we don’t see the plate. But the way I’ve always thought of it is that even if we at home don’t see the plate as the ump sees it…we at least have a somewhat constant vantage point for the pitch.

So while we may not be able to accurately judge any individual pitch as being in the zone or not, we at least have a good means of accurately judging how one strike looked comparred to another.

Gomez
Mauer

T says:

No, your right Doug. The ump wasn’t solely responsible. I hope I didn’t come off that way.

The ump didn’t give up the Salami, or cause Crain to make a dumb throw. Nor did he cause Young to get thrown out or Gomez to break too early.

The Twins did plenty on the mound and in the field to dig a hole. But the ump wasn’t doing them many favors in a few key situations.

Doug Munson says:

T says:

Here’s a question I’ve been pondering durign today’s game…but I fear the results of the game may lend some bias to the discussion.

Boof has struggled this season so far, but he’s shown the ability to settle down and has had some good starts mixed in.

If as the season progressed the Twins are able to get Baker and Liriano back to 100%, and the bullpen as it is doesn’t show any glaring holes…is Boof somebody that could be worth something in a trade?

OR

Would an abundance of starting pitching lead to Boof being better suited in the bullpen, thus opening some of the older less essential arms becoming available for trade? At that point, who?

sane says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

stu,
“A catcher covering first base when the first baseman goes back into right field on a popup/duck snort is not “a trick play,” doof! It’s baseball 101!”

You just flunked!
The catcher stays at home.
The pitcher covers bases vacated by infielders pursuing popups.
THAT is BASEBALL 101.

Adam.Everett@mlbwavers.com says:

Gardy shouldn’t be blamed for this loss, at some point we have to address the Boof Bonser Blow-ups that are seem unavoidable at this point in time and as predictable as a high and low tide…I’m curious as to how long of a leash Gardy and Andy will give Bonser, I mean what if he ends up 3-10 at the All Star Break with an ERA in the mid 5’s or even low 6’s? If that’s the case (forgive my speculations) I can’t imagine Boof not having to pick up hotel room for a few weeks in Rochester NY.

Daniel1966 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Listening to Dan Gladden’s explanation of the Young play at first, he explained that Zaun’s play was routine. In fact, he said that on such a play, Zaun’s only job is to follow the base runner to first, in the event of just such a situation arising. Somebody please contact Gladden at the coffee shop tomorrow and ask him if he, indeed, meant what he said and why he would know that while neither the Twin coach nor player would recognize the situation. Thanks. We’d love to hear his response.

Doug Munson says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

T - The problem as I see it is that the Twins may have more than one pitcher in the Rotation that would be better suited for the bullpen.Slowey fits the bill IMO.He doesn’t have the stuff to get through a line up more than once and his variance in speed isn’t dramatic enough (ala Hernandez) to keep them off his less than average fastball.Bonser has control issues and I don’t know about him in the pen for that reason.I’d like to see more off Perkins as a starter but I fear that for this team he may be more valuable in the bullpen to help keep Reyes healthy.A return of Baker and eventually Liriano sure would help.

Adam.Everett@mlbwavers.com says:

T:

I’ve been pondering situations similar to the one you posed… It’s tricky b/c you’re right, one inning he’s dealing meatballs, the next a 1-2-3 all ground outs.

However as negative as I just was towards Boof, Cisco Kid looks worse and seems like he doesn’t care, Perkins and Slowey need some more time…

So I come up with this… (out of nowhere)

What not put Matty G out there for the first 3 innings and have Boof come in for the 4th-8th, Nathan or Bass in the 9th, depending on whether it be a 1-3 run lead or a 5-20 run deficit.

Wow I must be tired, goodnight, can’t wait for tomorrow’s squeeze play!

sane says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Daniel,
Just check the catcher’s actions on a single to the outfield at the next game(or games)that you attend.
You won’t need Gladden to explain anything.
See if the catcher trails the runner to 1B as a routine assignment on the single to the outfield. Then you will be smarter than Gladden apparently is.

Doug Munson says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Daniel1966-Gardenhires explaination was that Young simply couldn’t stop fast enough and get back due to his ankle (last nights injury). I never questioned Whites having some fault in the play ,I couldn’t tell whether he was following the ball or looking for Zahn.I reacted to your assertion that as a Twins fan at Jacobs Field you felt you were somehow owed an explaination from Ullger on the spot.

sane says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Daniel,
If the camera allows, you may be able to locate the catcher on singles to the outfield when viewing your next TV game.

Bill Brasky says:

May 14th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

The catcher covering 1B on Young’s single is not uncommon by any means. Of course it can only be done with no other runners on base. If you’ve played and watched as many games over the years as I have, you know how it’s done. That being said, it’s rare that dpmeone sctually gets thrown out on this play. I think I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen it happen.

T says:

May 14th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

sane, we really need to give up on Daniel at this point.

If the play is as common as he (and apparently Gladden) think it is, you’d expect more players to be thrown out at first in this fashion.

It was a great hustle play by Zahn. Bill Brasky you are correct its very rare simply because most catchers wouldn’t bother or think of it.I’ve been watching ML baseball for over foury years but have never seen it done successfully at the big league level. If you take Gardenhires explaination for what its worth you can just chaulk it up to circumstances, but Gardy probably didn’t want to throw anyone under the bus.

May 14th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

Daniel1966 says:

May 14th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

All I did was repeat what Gladden said. Of course, it you doubt it, ask anyone who may have listened to the game or better yet, ask Gladden. Jack Morris, who was sitting beside him, had no negative reaction to Gladden’s remark. John Gordon pointed out that Young’s inability to stop and return to the bag may well have been caused by his weak ankle and, thus, an inability to stop. Just reporting what they said.

Who cares if he’s wearing a catcher’s mit or infielder’s glove. The baserunner should know that someone is going to be there.

Get Boof and his stupid looking facial hair out of the rotation. give somebody else a chance to start because Boof cant cut it. I wouldn’t mind us making a trade for a veteran SP towards the all star break. Thats only if the twins are still in the race and thats a big IF!

T says:

May 15th, 2008 at 7:01 am

You know, on the upside, the Twins managed to score 5 runs on a good pitching staff last night. (4 of Halliday, including a homer by Morneau)

That in itself is no small feat. So at least they didn’t get shut down following the Boston series.

Boof’s inability to get off to a good start is definately concerning. And as I mentiond before, at this point I can’t decide if he’d be a candidate for the bullpen or a trade…

I don’t think AAA is the answer, considering out of the Twins rotation (not counting Hernandez) he’s one of the more experienced guys.

The Twins have plenty of pitching, even with Baker and Neshek down. If they could spin Boof for an immediate offensive upgrade at 3B (and preferably something that’s a long term solution) then I think could be one option to consider.

Gardenhire messed up by putting Casilla in the lineup at shortstop. There was no legitimate reason for the substitution. Casilla missed a grounder that should have been caught which led to the big first inning by the Jays. Gardenshire cost the team at least twenty games in 2007 by excessive and unnecessary substitutions to the lineup. It looks like he is returning to his habitual over management of the lineup, at a cost to the team in the standings. Also, it should have become apparent to fans that the hitting coach Joe V. is doing more harm than good. Players are initially hitting the cover off the ball in their first year up to the majors until he starts manipulating their batting stance, swing, and style to the point where their pure abilities are diminished. I believe the players should be able to hit the way they are most comfortable and not constantly have to listen to an over-bearing hitting instructor. I also think the same thing is happening with Anderson and the pitchers. Pitchers like Liriano, Bonser, Garza, Slowey, and Baker have all had outstadning talent that seemed to be diminished by over-coaching.

“In the event that a 1Bman has to go back on a texas-leaguer, somebody has to cover first. Whether it be the catcher, pitcher, or second 2Bman is irrelevant…somebody WILL be covering the bag.”

The only difference is that on the “trailer play”, the catcher will aggressively cut off the batter-baserunner’s return to 1B.
If the “trailer” play is not on, the pitcher will passively cover 1B and become a factor only if the batter-baserunner has run out into “no-man’s land”.

Boof seems to have aquired the BRadke 1st inningitis. He needs to start running his 2 seamer in on righties hands early in the count. It would just make his slider better away. Jays must have seen something and caught Delmon slipping, maybe goes back to last year even. Had it in their back pocket. I’m not against giving Casilla a start or two up here to give him a taste before he goes back down. No use having him sit the bench the whole time.
