Twins-Bronx Bombers: Punto returns

Posted on May 31st, 2008 – 5:37 PM
By La Velle

The Twins activated Nick Punto from the disabled list and designated Howie Clark for assignment.

Punto was immediately inserted as the starting shortstop tonight - but I wouldn’t be surprised if Twins manager Ron Gardenhire sticks with him there for awhile.

Gardy values defense up the middle over offense, and Brendan Harris  missed two plays in the field during Friday’s loss to the Yanks. I’m getting wind that Punto and Alexi Casilla will remain up the middle while Brendan Harris splits time at third with Mike Lamb.

All Gardy would say on the record before the game that he’s, “open to anything,” when asked if Harris is going to get playing time at third.

Boof Bonser is on the hill here. Scott Baker is on the hill at Fort Myers. Check in on the game here.  Needless to say,  this is a massive start for Boof.

Lineups

Bombers (27-27): 1. Johnny Damon, LF. 2. Derek Jeter, SS. 3. Bobby Abreu, RF. 4. A-Rod, 3B. 5. Hideki Matsui, DH. 6. Jason Giambi, 1B. 7. Robinson Cano, 2B. 8. Jose Molina, C. 9. Melky Cabrera, CF. Pitching: Wang.

Twins (28-26): 1. Carlos Gomez, CF. 2. Alexi Casilla, 2B. 3. Joe Mauer, C. 4. Justin Morneau, 1B. 5. Michael Cuddyer, RF. 6. Jason Kubel, DH. 7. Delmon Young, LF. 8. Mike Lamb, 3B. 9. Nick Punto, SS. Pitching: Boof.

I had to take the back way to get to the blog. When I went to the strib sports page, Joe’s story about the Rays was below all three bloggers. Anyway, see you later Howie, you had a nice hit and Brendan, I think you’ll be looking for your sixth team before another year passes.

Here’s a hypothetical… what happens if Boof shuts out the Yankees tonight? Even to be fair, what if he goes 7 innings and gives up just one or even two runs? Then what?

snepp says:

May 31st, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Way to go Seth, you blew it!

PD says:

May 31st, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Not yet! Two good frames for the Booooooof.

snepp says:

Boof works out of it, I guess you’re off the hook.

Baker is pitching 2 perfect innings (with 2 Ks) in Fort Myers

coco says:

May 31st, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Trade Livan & prospect for a 3rd base prospect. Ride with young starters this season. They are not going to improve being moved to bullpen. we have young pitching depth, let’s use it!

Liriano, 3 IP 1 ER 2H 1 BB 3K for Rochester tonight. McDonald hit his 7th HR (a solo 2-out shot)

thrylos98 says:

Baker: 3IP 1ER 2H 0BB 2K

Great job Punto… so glad he is back [/sarcasm]

SethSpeaks says:

May 31st, 2008 at 6:59 pm

They can’t trade Livan yet, not while they’re in contention. In a month they can. And, they don’t need a 3B prospect. They’ve got Danny Valencia (check LaVelle’s Minor League report!) and Luke Hughes as options and Deibinson Romero below that.

whalefeet says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:01 pm

livan will not make the difference between the twins making or not making the playoffs. if somebody wants him bad enough and offers anything close to a major league infielder who can hit, i’d make that trade in a heartbeat.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:01 pm

You know, Baker is one guy that’s going to throw the pitching staff into flux…but what happens if they decide Liriano is ready to get called up?

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Friggin’ unearned runs.

SethSpeaks says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:02 pm

I would too… I’m just saying that they won’t do that. I would have no problem if they did, but I know most Twins fans would see it as throwing in the towel.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:04 pm

but I know most Twins fans would see it as throwing in the towel.

Keep in mind most people who would see it that way are the same people who felt dealing Ortiz and letting Cirillo get claimed last year were “cheapskate” moves as well.

SethSpeaks says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Anyone else find it funny that a lot of people (coaches/manager/media) were talking as if Punto was returning and he was going to be a savior. Funny!

Anyway, Boof should be out of this, but at the same time, he’s got to pick up Punto and get the next guy out.

I have a feeling that liriano will be ready right about the time that Livan should be traded.

Austin says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Punto, you suck get back on the DL we certainly didn’t miss you.

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:05 pm

a major league infielder who can hit

ok. check time:

Casilla has been ok
Harris is ok

I don’t think that Livan can bring in Hanley Ramirez or Chase Utley

It’s a matter of Gardy not playing Punto

Captain America says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Throw Boof to the pen. Send Racoon a packing.

SethSpeaks says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:06 pm

T - I agree with you completely… just acknowledging that perception unfortunately sometimes can influence things like that.

The other thing to remember is that there likely isn’t a team dumb enough to give up the kind of prospects right now that would make it a no-brainer decision for the Twins.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Yeah, I was glad to have Punto back because he’d be a nice multi-purpose bench option.

I didn’t expect him to get a start right off the bat. Though I suppose you gotta see if he can get back into the mix right away…

Everett and Tolbert will eventually be off the DL. So the Twins need to assess as quickly as possible who they’re going to run with, and who’s going to be the bench.

…Also, nice statistic. Twins are the 2nd best team run production wise in the Central.

T says:

Re Livan:

Depending how the Dodgers are doing, I could potentially see BS being aggressive and packaging Livan with some prospects or? to go after Andy LaRoche. That might make sense but not sure that this Twins FO knows what makes sense (i.e. going big after Frank Thomas…)

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Okay guys…not cool. You could get two deep flys and tie it.

Now you need some clutch hits.

coco says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Seth, picture this. Tolbert returns from DL, starts at 2nd. Casilla takes over at SS. Twins trade what is needed to Rockies for Atkins. If Valencia makes it to AAA as legitimate top prospect, he replaces Atkins when he leaves as FA. Hughes becomes new utility infielder that can hit a little.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Oh well. Nevermind. Well done Cuddy!

Austin says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Thatta boy Cuddyer, that is huge. Now Kubel at the very least we need a sac fly outta you.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:15 pm

coco, considering what it would take to bring Atkins in, the Twins would NOT let him go to Free Agency just like that.

dano says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:15 pm

why does dick care so much if somebody breacks a bat who cares he they breack there bat

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:15 pm

dano, it’s called interesting parallel.

A-Rod drove in the go-ahead runs with a busted bat. No Cuddy gets a big busted bat hit of his own.

Austin says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Seth, what do you think happens when Everett is able to come off the DL? I sure hope we don’t stick him out there day in and day out as our regular starter.

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Baker: 4IP 3ER 5H 0BB 3K

not sure how does that impact the call up scenarios…

Austin says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Geeze Kubel, pick him up Delmon.

what says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Monroe should be in the lineup

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:17 pm

coco,

I am not sure that Atkins is the answer… check his home vs away splits.

Austin says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Baker will still be up in the majors for his next start as long as he finishes that start and doesn’t reinjure himself.

Austin says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:18 pm

what, yeah Monroe should be in there because he would K just like Kubel did, just like he did last night against Mo.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:19 pm

FTR:

Frank Thomas is hitting .258 with 7 HR and 27 RBI.

Craig Monroe is hitting .235 with 5 HR and 18 RBI.

Jason Kubel is hitting .250 with 6 HR and 27 RBI.

In other words, our two-headed DH (Craig I think called him Crason Monbel once) is doing just as well (and I’d argue better)

Austin says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Delmon if you could ever pull a ball in your life, I think it would fool us all.

what says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:19 pm

coco says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:30 pm

I believe big Frank was just put on the DL. Playing on our artificial turf, he would always be injured. Lets all give Kubel a chance to develop further. By the way, I suggested Atkins because he might actually be available …. they have Stewart ready to plug into 3rd base.

Austin says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Great play by Casilla there. Lamb that throw could have easily ended up in right field and been a nightmare.

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Liriano: 6 IP 1 ER 3H 1 BB 6K; 87 pitches 58 strikes

PD says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:33 pm

OK, Lamb’s fielding (mostly his throwing) has been atrocious of late. But what do we make of his resurgence at the plate? If they do make a trade for a ML-ready 3B, do you keep Lamb around as a LH pinch-hitter and occasional DH? Kind of the same role he played in Texas and Houston, more or less successfully.

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:35 pm

coco, I am not that sure that Atkins is better than Lamb…

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Baker: 5 IP 3 ER 5H 0 BB 3K

what says:

Wish i could watch the hockey game but kare 11 is non stop with the bad weather

PD says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:43 pm

I like the idea of talking with the Dodgers. When LaRoche is ready, they’re going to have to bench him or Dewitt, and they can always use another starting pitcher. Livan has proven his value — if they can shake one of those guys free, they should jump at the chance.

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Final for Liriano tonight:
6.1 IP 1 ER 3H 1 BB 7K; 96 pitches 64 strikes

btw Lamb was involved in all outs this inning, including a couple of pretty decent plays…

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Baker’s final line: 5 IP 3 ER 7H 0 BB 4K

PD says:

May 31st, 2008 at 8:00 pm

And the hockey game is 1-1 after one period, for those of you dealing with KARE-11’s weather hysteria.

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 8:00 pm

PD,

LaRoche is ready… they made the decision to go with Dewitt and Nomar, so he is pretty much dispensable for them

Ironically enough, the Twins could sacfly the winning run in yet…

I’d prefer the dramatics of a hit though.

Carlos G says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Breslow looked quite good tonight. Nice big curve. Looked composed. Tough decisions coming up if we don’t move someone via trade. Looks like Bass will be testing the waivers, IMO.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Carlos, I don’t think the Twins have a pitcher at the moment who’d clear waivers.

They’re track record with homegrown pitchers makes them attractive.

May 31st, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Yup, official. Two different sets of umps tonight.

Carlos G says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:18 pm

I imagine Breslow will have one or two more chances to prove tonight wasn’t a fluke. If he does, it looks like he stays. I think Bass would be next to leave. And, yes, probably won’t make it through waivers.

gil says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:18 pm

bass has been shakey of late.

CH says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:23 pm

I can’t take another AB by Gomez, Cuddy, Kubel, Young with a swing at a slider that looks like my 9 year old daughter at her softball game!

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Nathan’s signed. So he’s not going anywhere.

Bass and Guerrier are the “long relief” as I understand it, though Guerrier’s moved into the set-up role with Neshek out.

Reyes and Breslow are lefty options. Don’t know what differentiates them at this time.

That leaves Crain and Ricon. With Crain back from injury this season, I doubt the Twins would want to just give up on him.

Rincon was about gone in the Garza/Young trade until injury concerns forced the Twins to swap in Morlan. To me that says there are teams that would use him, and the Twins are preparred to move him if the need arises.

Look for them to shop him around, for anything they could get. Likely not immediate help, as it would cause the same kinds of roster shuffilng that they’d be moving him to resolve.

sane says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:27 pm

IMO Bass clears waivers.
Career minor leaguer who could not stick with the KC Royals.
5.67 ERA, 16K, 14 BB this year in MLB.
Not a keeper for most teams.

Carlos G says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:28 pm

T - I believe Boof replaces Bass as long relief, unless we move someone via trade.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:29 pm

sane,

With the way waivers work, the Twins could pull him back and work out a deal before a team could just take him correct?

And the claiming team picks up the salary?

Christian says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:32 pm

CH,

I would like to see you face a Major League slider…I am sure you would look horrible. I play baseball and I know how hard it is to hit a slider. The slider looks like a fastball and as you swing the ball suddenly starts to move to the right. You end up either hitting it off the end of the bat or totally missing it. It is HARD to hit a slider.

CH says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:32 pm

How much more of Rincon do we have to take?

Carlos G says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Stupid baggy in RF was 3 feet too high or Lamb’s triple would have ended it. Rincon should hit A-Rod just for fun.

CH says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Christian….Thanks for the Baseball lesson…..However, I don’t see many major league hitters taking swings like our guys are taking…They are not even close!

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Rincon seems to be taking a page from Lohse/Romero book.

That is, once you realize your butt’s on the trade block you do everything in your power to drop your value as much as possible.

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:35 pm

CH, the reason the slider is such an excellent pitch is because it can fool a hitter like that.

If it was just as easy to hit as anything else you wouldn’t see it thrown now would you?

LaVelle… you’ll have to see what happened in the Beloit/Clinton game tonight. In the 9th inning, eight players were ejected. I don’t know what happened, but there was some strange play at the end of the 8th that involved a couple of the players ejected. Benches must have cleared because there were two Snappers players that weren’t even in the game that got ejected. Just happened, so I don’t know anything more than that.

Jonas says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:41 pm

I am really wondering how the bullpen is going to do this tomorrow. There is nothing left, and Livan is pitching. He either needs to be the pitcher we saw at the beginning of the year, or… *gulp.

Carlos G says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:41 pm

OK. Rivera with one earned run this year. No way he gives up another. It’s a lock with Rivera. He is lights out. No chance for Twins. Put it in the books. Rivera can’t possibly give up another run.

Was that enough to start the jinx? Or, does it have to come from Souhan, Joe C, or LaVelle.?

Gardy should have let guerrier go, 3 pitches? come on we are in a long stretch here…

sane says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:43 pm

T,
“With the way waivers work, the Twins could pull him back and work out a deal before a team could just take him correct.
And the claiming team picks up the salary?”

IMO, if revoking the waivers occurs, the team claiming Bass could just wait for the Twins to choose between keeping Bass or activating Baker.
Terms of the deal would determine who pays the salary.

Jonas says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Guerrier might have to do two or three innings tomorrow… it might have been prescient for Gardy to take him out (though I am still not a fan of the move in that situation).

Why is Gardy treating the righties like situational righties more and more recently?

mj1 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:43 pm

this game should be over ….what the hell would have been wrong with morneau laying down a sac bunt with no out and 2 on…thats basic baseball….with a man on third hes going to score more often than not….gardy just blew this away…all will blame rincon but you cant hold these yanks to 0 too many innings ….2 on andn 0 out the twins should have scored, thats all there is to say……nice job gardy

T says:

May 31st, 2008 at 10:44 pm

“Gardy should have let guerrier go, 3 pitches? come on we are in a long stretch here…”

And let the second guessing begin.

Why don’t we just default to Punto? He’s in the lineup today, had an error. Come on this should be easy after all the practice in 07.

“Was that enough to start the jinx? Or, does it have to come from Souhan, Joe C, or LaVelle.?”

I don’t know if you can invoke it on purpose…seems like you’re trying to beat the Baseball Gods at their own game.

They tend to not like that.

May 31st, 2008 at 10:46 pm

T says:

For example, not PHing Monroe here.

Why don’t you complain about that. Because THAT is actually confusing.

thrylos98 says:

why didn’t Gardy ph for Punto?

Jonas says:

I think it just comes down to the fact that righties do terribly against Rivera (not that lefties are so great).

T says:

Well, two games into this series:

1) If we were a contender, I’d be worried. They fought the Yankees hard, but made some mistakes that ending up costing them. Never give the Yanks extra outs. Ever.

2) But looking at this still as rebuilding, these two games weren’t too bad as a learning experience. The Yankees usually march into the Dome, slap the pitchers around and then leave with a series win. They have a chance to win the series yet, but the games have been hard fought…and have come more off the glove of the Twins than the bats of the Yanks.

I’m ticked off they lost two games they could’ve just as easily won…but at the same time they played the Yankees hard.

You’d prefer a Guillen (Ozzie/Jose…take your pick) style meltdown where all he does is embarass himself, and cause a rift in the clubhouse?

gardy has his head up his ass tonite….he needs to be benched along with a few others……god this game was depressing and should never have been lost…some of these games the twins lose just make you want to shake your head and scream….its one thing to lose a ball game and its another to just hand one over to the yanks….theres a difference…..

T,
who told you that the Twins are not a contender?

Kubel should be benched for a while… and the fact that Gardy does not know how to use a pitching staff (i.e waste Crain, Guerrier and Nathan and let Rincon and Bass at the critical places) is not news.

what says:

T,

Id rather have Gardy just be a realist, not a bs’r

mj1 says:

i would say a game out of 1st is contending - we should stop all this rebuilding bs as an excuse for crap baseball….this team is contending and thats all there is….

thrylos98 says:

and that sh*t about starting LNP today, his first day off the DL, cost the game.

Methinks that Gardy’s daughter should be having a graduation ceremony every day this summer.

don’t have access to the postgame but Gardy never thinks he ever makes any mistakes and he is ready to throw his players under the bus & I am sure that the media are not about to ask any pointed questions (because they never do)

what says:

May 31st, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Thats the media for you in Minnesota, never want to step on anybodies toes. At least souhan tries to stir the pot, even though he has absolutely no clue on what he is talking about. His article about the Yankees being old and terrible, was just comical. He must not who plays on the Yankees. I wish the media in Minnesota would be more direct, not a bunch of a– kissers and cheerleaders.

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Well, if Gardy decides to play Punto every day at SS and platoon Harris with Lamb, he should be accountable for his actions (and the media and the front office should hold him accountable). Slowly and steadily Lamb has been shown a massive improvement and Harris won more games than he lost (unlike Punto).

If this team does not win the division Gardy should be gone.

Uh, figure it out.
If Crain, Guerrier and Nathan weren’t “wasted” earlier, there would not be any “critical places”.
That critique is bull sh-t!

thrylos98,
“waste Crain, Guerrier and Nathan and let Rincon and Bass at the critical places”

If that’s your logic, Gardy is Einstein compared to you. He should be asking for your firing.
If you pitch Rincon and Bass earlier, we lose in nine innings. That’s rocket science!

thrylos98 says:

May 31st, 2008 at 11:51 pm

sy,

Guerrier threw 3 pitches. Do you think that he could have pitched the 9th, then have Reyes for the 10th, Rincon for a couple of outs at the 11th and Nathan for the end?

sy says:

May 31st, 2008 at 11:59 pm

mj1,
“what the hell would have been wrong with morneau laying down a sac bunt with no out and 2 on…thats basic baseball….with a man on third hes going to score more often than not”

Except that Cuddyer and Kubel followed with strikouts - so its more NOT than OFTEN this time.
Sluggers (like Morneau) don’t bunt in MLB - they do what they do best - drive in the winning runs.

If Morneau fails trying to bunt you criticize the Mgr.

If Morneau bunts and Cuddyer and Kubel fail to hit, you criticize the Mgr.

Its always good for the second guessers.
And the less you know, the easier it gets.

sy says:

June 1st, 2008 at 12:02 am

“Guerrier threw 3 pitches. Do you think that he could have pitched the 9th”

If Guerrier loses in the 9th, everyone would be bitching “why did we re-sign Nathan if we aren’t going to have our closer pitch the 9th inning? Fire Gardy!”

Chris D. says:

June 1st, 2008 at 12:53 am

While it’s tough to drop games like these to a Yankee team that won’t even make the playoffs the Twins won’t make the playoffs either so it’s not really a big deal. I’m a Gardy defender but it’s always baffling to me why he always waits to put Nathan in during extra-inning home games. There’s no save situation when you are at home so you might as well go with the best closer in baseball to keep you in the game for another inning. Oh well.

BC Beneke says:

June 1st, 2008 at 1:57 am

Just got home to see the score and the highlights of the game. Punto was a bit rusty in the field, and combining that with Rincon and Boof… the fact that it took 12 innings to lose is testimony to the heart of the rest of the team. Boof and Rincon should be cut!

The New and Improved Craig says:

June 1st, 2008 at 2:24 am

Howie Clark was sent out and removed from the 40 man roster, as I predicted. Great to have Nick Punto back. Nick should get the starts at SS until Everett returns. Gardy will have a decision to make at that point.

LasVegasDave says:

June 1st, 2008 at 3:25 am

Why do people thik Punto is a good defensive player? Just because Dick-n-Bert want to cuff themselves after every semi-routine play he makes? Errors happen, but that ball he missed tonight was inexcusable for a major leaue ballplayer. An average high school shortstop makes that play 10 of 10 times. Punto simply does not have the skills to be a starting MLB player, period, end of story. Examples like tonight have happened over and over with this guy both in the field and at the plate. Honestly, it makes me question the legitimacy of the team when they trot him out there over and over. Throw me a freakin’ bone and give me a MLB player at SS. If not, then don’t pretend that this team is contending for anything. Your payroll should not be that tight that you can’t afford to get someone that can play the position if Everett is on the shelf the rest of the year.

Shaun says:

T says:

“who told you that the Twins are not a contender?”

Let’s see…

Lost Hunter and Santana. Silva…

Most senior pitcher (next to Hernandez) was Scott Baker.

Neshek is out for the season. “Key” offseason additions include two young OFs who are both a bit rough around the edges.

Oh, and then there’s people such as yourself who all through the offseason ripped on Pohlad, Smith, Gardy, and Wally the Beerman for making stupid decisions that would “destroy this team”.

Looking at the Young-Garza trade:

Garza ERA 3.78 has been replaced by:
Blackburn ERA 3.39
Slowey ERA 3.38
Perkins ERA 3.90
Baker ERA 4.09

Bartlett .249 0-9 has been replaced by:
Punto .264 0-8

Garza (3.78 ERA) and
Bartlett .249 0-9 were traded for:
Young .264 0-15 and
Harris .253 2-14.

I would say the loss of Garza has not been felt much because of the development of the Twins young SP.

The loss of Bartlett has been felt only because of the Punto, Tolbert and Everett injuries. If Punto continues to hit near .265, Bartlett will not be missed much.
The trade will ultimately be measured by the long term performances of Matt Garza and Delmon Young.
Up to now, its too close to call, and the Twins have not been hurt significantly by the loss of Garza and Bartlett.

Paul G says:

June 1st, 2008 at 10:50 am

sane - up to now the trade is not close - the Rays got the 2 best players. Yes Bartlett has been better than Young all-around as he has been credited by Joe Maddon for his range and stabilizing the Rays infield defense - major factor in them having the best record in AL. But it’s only been 2 months so we shall see. The scary part is Garza - Buster Olney said in a radio interview there were a lot of folks puzzled that the Twins gave up a pitcher with plus-stuff so quickly. That’s the thing that COULD haunt - Garza has #1 stuff. I don’t think you can say that about the rest of the rotation.

T says:

June 1st, 2008 at 11:09 am

Paul, I don’t think the Twins “gave up” on Garza.

They wanted Young, and their offense was in far greater disarray than their pitching staff (as demonstarted this year)

Unfortunately Young’s in his sophomore slump by the looks of it. But the Garza/Young deal was one of those gutsy moves that so many had complained the Twins never did.

To sane:

Is Bartlett/Punto a fair comparison? The Twins have used four/five guys in place of Bartlett (more due to injury than lack of production)

I’d be more curious to see a comparison of Bartlett vs. our SS “by committee”

sane says:

June 1st, 2008 at 11:30 am

T,
I dislike our “committee” because of Everett’s injury-riddled subpar play, Harris/Tolbert’s lack of range, and Punto’s injury, which occurred (IMO) just as he was about to hit like 2006.
I think Bartlett’s year surpasses the “committee”.
I think Punto is the final answer at SS unless Adam Everett2006 re-emerges from the DL.

mike wants wins says:

June 1st, 2008 at 12:38 pm

The Twins totally gave up on Garza, because he did not get along with the manager and some of the players….Now, they did so in an attempt to get a legit hitter, they just appear to have chosen the wrong target (though he is 22…). I didn’t like the deal at the time, as was soundly ridiculed for saying that Garza would succeed.

sane says:

June 1st, 2008 at 6:22 pm

mike wants wins,

One risk with Garza is that he has a maximum effort delivery.

The probability for durability is usually better for a smooth delivery.

There have been many exceptions, but most pitching coaches believe that theory to be generally true.

Bonser has a career ERA of over 5.00. I think he should be traded or sent down to the minors. Then only thing bad about sending him to AAA is that he would be blocking the progress of other potentially better pitchers who need to pitch. Therefore, I think that Bonser should definately be traded to any team who will take him.
