Gardenhire suspended for tonight’s game
Posted on August 2nd, 2008 – 1:19 PMBy La Velle
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire has been suspended for one game following his actions during Thursday’s game against the White Sox.
Gardenhire will serve the suspension tonight - there is no appeal process for managers who are disciplined by the league. He’s allowed to take part in pre-game activities and can remain in his office during the game. Scott Ullger will manage the game from the bench.
Gardenhire was suspended after he kicked his hat in disgust following his ejection in the seventh inning. Fans threw hats, baseballs and other debris on the field after that, forcing Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen to pull his team off the field for a few minutes.

crazy as hell.
Fire Ozzie
thats to bad o well
Gardy reminded me of Bobby Cox, Earl Weaver, and Billy Martin all rolled into one during that tirade! It also brought back a fond memory of Bill Rigney at the old Met Stadium in the 60’s. He was managing the Angels against the Twins if memory serves me right, and he did about three hat kicks before he made good contact. It was a great drop kick of the hat! Funny stuff, and Rigney was one of those guys that looked old too but he could still give you a wonderful tirade!
Too bad the league didn’t say something about the bad call made by the 3rd base umpire. Replays showed he was in error with the strike called on the Twin’s batter when he pulled the bat back on a bunt attempt and got hit by the baseball.
you know, as i still think it’s crap he is suspended one game, it was worth it. it really got the stadium pumped and even justin morneau said that got the team pumped up just hearing the crowd. so in my opinion, the suspension was worth getting a BIG W against the sox.
Gardy’s actions fired up the team allowing them to win. Now he’s being suspended because an umpire blew the call. Suspend the umpire too for his blatent mistake.
Yet Ozzie is allowed to incite the crowd and yell at them as well. The ump also made a horrible call. What a joke!
[…] Original Twins insider […]
Umpires are only human and occasionally make mistakes - it’s part of the game.
50 year old Managers acting like children is NOT part of the game.
That’s why Gardy was suspended.
The problem is umps don’t just occasionally make mistakes. Ozzie was acting like a child and did not get suspended did he?
It was a ridiculous call by the umpire, one that I have never seen in more than 40 years of watching baseball games.
Span clearly tried to avoid the pitch and pulled his bat back in the process.
OTOH, it is true that, in baseball, you can never be sure what is good for your team and what is bad.
For example, if Span is awarded first on a HBP and Punto hits into a double-play, then they end up worse than the way it worked out.
As a result, having a degree of equanimity is important, though Gardy’s tirade was a classic and likely inspired everyone within visual range. So, in this case, the passion was kinetic and served a good end.
OK………….batter looking down,calls time,Ump refuses,pitcher throws……..
batter hit by pitch ,AJ tells ump he tried to bunt, ump believes him…..
home run 5 feet foul…….call changed
looks like a pattern to me.
Watch the replay again - Span’s back foot came out of the batters box when he was attempting the bunt.
Granted, there has been no indication that was the reason they didn’t allow the HBP - they simply seemed to say he offered at it (and Gardy didn’t argue that, either) - but end result is, Span shouldn’t have been offered 1B because he was out of the box, correct?
Any rule geeks out there know the ruling? I know if he bunts the ball, and after leaving the box is hit by the ball, he’s considered out, as is a runner who is hit by a batted ball. A runner is not out if he is hit by a ball thrown by a fielder (see Alexi Ramirez getting drilled in the back sliding into third. Nice toss Spanny!) - what if it’s during the pitch?
Hmm - Just did the research myself, and found it interesting, so will share all, including my original question. Even if Span was 100% out of the box (say he jumped back out of the box, forward towards the pitch for some goofy reason, or whatever), if the pitch hits him, he’s awarded 1B UNLESS the pitch would have been a strike if it didn’t hit him (say if span leaned out over the plate). Interesting rule.
“Umpires are only human and occasionally make mistakes - it’s part of the game.

I tend to believe that much of Gardy’s tirade(s),and other manager’s as well, is equal parts of acting and actual anger. I think the manager uses an instance in the game to not only argue the call for possible benefit on a future call, but to also get the team pumped up. Obviously there are exceptions where the manager is just plain acting child like, but in the vast majority I think there is far more at work than just anger.
“Yet Ozzie is allowed to incite the crowd and yell at them as well. The ump also made a horrible call. What a joke!”
Nora, that’s a good point that I had not thought of!
The League needs to address the situation with the bad call. Yes, Umps make mistakes, but own up to it. Issue the team an apology. And they also need to address the issue of Ozzie getting into it with a fan. There should be no reason he is not suspended or fined for that display.
JC is absolutely correct. Umpires should be suspended for such obviously blown calls.
Gardy - nice job, doing what he had to do.
Cap kick - very nice touch
Bud & Co. have it backward - Ump missed the call completely.
A.J. - we will continue to boo him.
Ozzie - Game MVP - really screwed up his pitcher and his team by dragging them off the field. Didn’t like to see the baseballs being thrown, but fans in the front row were more at risk of getting hit than ANYBODY on the field.
Don’t just suspend the umpire, find the clown after the game and knock him on his rear end. That will take these clowns down a notch. MLB umpires have gotten worse and worse over the years. Too complacent and too many blown calls. And nothing is done about it.
RichmondVAFan, Kevin, JC, Nora, Old Twins Cap, and tarball, I agree with you all. Gardy should get a nice, relaxing massage during tonight’s game, and just sit back and watch. Whatever happens tonight is not on his back, so he should just make lemonade out of this league decision lemon and smile knowing Twins and Twins fans appreciated his disgust with that blown call.
Anyone see where Ozzie said that when Crede comes back the Sox will run away with the division? That is kinda funny to me. He better hope they have a comfy lead before they come back to the Dome in Sept
spit - spit - spit…
Small price to pay for a wrong call by an umpire that was too far away and at a wrong angle to make a call like that. I love the fact that he made all the calls after that in the Twins favor. Just goes to show the AJ and Ozzie will do what they need to do to win a game. Yet no one can figure out why they both get boo’ed when they play here.
He should have served the suspension tomorrow, when we have the highest chance of victory. Note: somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
A lot of chagrin over nothing imo.
Missed call. part of the game.
Manager tirade, whether genuine or theatre (in this case a bit of both). Part of the game.
Automatic fine for getting ejected. Suspension for continuing the tirade well after the ejection. Also pretty standard.
Umpires are evaluated over the course of the season and if significant patterns are noted, it affects whether they keep their jobs. Single blown calls do not and you will never see “apologies” for single instances of missed calls. Nor, imo, should you. It would negatively impact the degree of control umpires must maintain over the game.
I agree with those that say the umpire should apology to the team. The Ump that made that terrible call should be fined and suspeneded as well. Ozzie’s action was very wrong as well. He needs to learn to leave the fans alone as well. He made it worse then it was. The league should have suspended the umps and Ozzie as well. The league was very unfair with it all.
“Manager tirade, whether genuine or theatre (in this case a bit of both). Part of the game.”
Agreed JimCrikket. If all the tirades I’ve seen were genuine, I think I would have witnessed at least one manager have a stroke or heart attack.
“Don’t just suspend the umpire, find the clown after the game and knock him on his rear end.”
John Hardin. I completely disagree, and find that to be far more childish than a manager having a tirade.
I’m sure most or all of you have seen that very funny commercial with Lou Pinella “arguing” with the ump. Not the other night at the Dome, because I truly believe Gardy was livid about that call, as was every Twins fan watching, and rightfully so, but you do have to wonder if at least some of these “arguments” are closer to the commercial than we think.
I’m even more upset that umpires continue to allow themselves to be influenced by the ultimate pest AJ. That goes all the way back to the ‘05 WS. It’s one thing for a catcher or pitcher to ask for a second opinion from the 1st or 3rd base ump, but AJ does way more than that.
It’s also ludicrous that the main holdout on instant replay as we speak is the players’ union. Don’t they want to get it right???? You’d think they have the most at stake. Wouldn’t it be precious if A-Rod breaks a leg and fails to pass Bonds’ record by one HR some day in the future…a HR he actually hit a few weeks back but that was miscalled by the umps??? If they want to pass on instant replay, then I wish Fehr & Co. would at least lobby for more protective padding on outfield walls so that outfielders like Gomez and Span don’t hurt themselves worst than they already have. Isn’t that what unions are for? Protect their members?
Manager of the Year!
Maybe some of you should put on the gear and get behind the dish and see how easy it is ( or isn’t ) to umpire a game. We don’t have instant replay, so things are on a split second call. Thats the way it is. I love it when some know it all who doesn’t have a clue about rules tries to officiate from the stands.
I think it’s so funny how much people complain about umpires. It would be so amusing to see anyone on this blog try to umpire a major league game. It’s got to be one of the most thankless, high stress jobs I can think of. You can be calling a perfect game, and you lose your train of thought for 5 seconds, blow a call, and everyone is calling you blind. I wonder how many of us have ever let our mind wander for 5 seconds while at work?
Big league umpires had to go through the minors just like the players. We’re seeing the best of the best. I would seriously LOVE to see anyone on this blog try to umpire a big league baseball game.
Well, nobody made them take the job. If you have a job then do it right! I know they are going to make mistakes but they are making way too many.
One game for putting a fire in his team against the Pale Hose is definitely worth it! Plus was funny as hell to watch
The manager’s job is to protect his player… the umpire blows the call, putting his player at risk. What was Gardenhire supposed to do?
Throughout MLB this year in particular, we see the round robins of umps being shuffled between the NL & AL becoming too much a “part of the show”. No one pays to see them. They should be the animate, but not actively participating part of the game they are intended to consistently regulate.
If they want to be a part of the show, send them to clown school-they’re performing badly as it is. Or, get them and their union to commit to spending more time with the study of the rule book, and how to properly interpret it on the field. And, while we’re at it, add fines for blown calls for them, too. Not a one-size-fits-all, but on a sliding scale, so they get what they deserve (including regular eye exams). No one wants them to be a punching bag-the word is: “consistent”… and check your ego at the door.
Hey superdave, I’d love to see any of the clowns AKA Nora even attempt to call a 13 U ball game. Nora shut up , you are an idiot
Whatever, Bplate grow up. Callinf people names on a blog for disagreeing with you only proves you are acting childish.
And yes Span did attempt the bunt
I’d love for you to be amnager and see what it is like seeing an ump blow call after call after call.
manager i mean
Try umpiring Nora seems you can do it pretty good from your front room !!
and i did not disagree with you, i stated people on the blog need to go behind the plate b4 being critical. If you can’t do the job better than who are you to criticize.
I also coach 11 and 12 year olds so b4 you open your big mouth know who you are talking too
I think when you are hired to do a job you should do it right or at least be more consistent. Being an ump is not my job.
I’ve umpired at the HS and Junior College level for baseball and women’s softball so I’m probably more tolerant of umpire mistakes than others. It’s frustrating and where I lose respect for them is when their behavior demonstrates they think they’re who we show up to watch. I know it’s a cliche, but the best umpires are the ones you seldom realize are there.
On a more depressing note… and maybe this is old news here since I just found out about it and I just don’t read all the comments here… but we can forget about Grudzielanek. He’s on the DL with a severely sprained ankle in last night’s game. That bites.
You obviously picked up some of their behavior by acting childish it seems.
Typical person i have to deal with while officiating can’t believe they are in cyber space
YES, umpires are human and make mistakes. GRANTED, they get a VERY HIGH percentage of calls correct.
The problem is the arrogance of the umpires WHO seldom attempt to correct their obvious mistakes.
What is left in the balance is the penalties for any reactions to their mistakes. Fines and suspensions because they weren’t MEN enough to say Oops…I screwed-up.
Nor, would Mr. Watson or Mr. Selig lose “face” if they said. The call at issue was incorrect, SO no fine or suspension.
Regards,
JimCrikket you hit the nail on the head the best in blue are the ones never seen yet heard
Look, umps and refs are not there to get all the calls correct. Too many things are just too close and could reasonably have gone either way - they are the result of chance, not of athletic skill.
Umps and refs are there to keep the game moving. If somebody didn’t make a call - ANY call - the game would degenerate into a wast of time like Gardy’s display. That’s why, like it or not, you take the ref’s decision and move on. Look at football: the game has really been debased by the ability to ‘challenge’ a call.
…..it’s a GAME. Grown up people, getting paid way too much, to play a game for our entertainment. And we can’t pay Police and Emergency responders, or our military personnell enough to make their house payments while they protect the rest of us?
Stop with the rationalizing of this ridiculous incident and put it into perspective.
Thank you………
How many games did the umpire get suspended, for making such a crappy call???
Lets take the the personality out of the game. In fact, lets just make it a video game.
Bplate,
First, it’s acceptable to respectfully criticize a profession even if you have never done it. By your reasoning we could not critique anybody, including athletes, or anyone in leadership, unless we had lived the same experience.
Second, I hope you don’t lose your cool and resort to name calling as quickly when your coaching as you did on this blog.
I was at that game and loved the Gardy meltdown - it was a TERRIBLE call. And since umps won’t change a bad call, the only resort a manager has is a good rant. The hat throwing by the crowd was very clever and funny, the umps deserved that for a lousy call at a critical moment (the baseballs were not funny). Yeah, Gardy warranted a one-game suspension for ‘inciting a riot’ but we fans that were there should probably chip in a couple of bucks each to help pay the fine ![]()
I LOVE THIS GAME! So a few calls are made. Jump up and down and enjoy the fun!
This is one of the funniest chat rooms I’ve ever read.
My problem with the suspention is that if Gardy is suspended for inciting a riot then Ozzie should be as well at the very least by arguing with fans.
To the morons that continue to boo AJ — grow a brain and learn a little about baseball.
The guy was traded. He didnt ask to leave. PLUS, he got us Liriano, Boof and Nathan. Why would you boo a guy we traded for gold?
The guy was traded. He didnt ask to leave. PLUS, he got us Liriano, Boof and Nathan. Why would you boo a guy we traded for gold?
Maybe they’re mad about the Boof part?
I don’t get the AJ boos either.
Maybe because of his antics during games?
Bplate, you quite certainly an internet toughguy and fairly entertaining to read. My favorite was “know who you’re talking to”…bwahahaha.
Gardy got a suspension for arguing balls and strikes…you can’t do it. Was it a bad call? Yes–Span started squaring but did not make an attempt on the bunt. Was tossing Gardy the right thing to do? Yes. Game suspension is exactly how to handle it, and when the same situation happens again Gardy will do the exact same thing, because it’s how he, the manager, should handle it. It’s part all part of the game, and always a fun dance to watch.
If gardy is suspended for a game the ump should be too. Horrible call!!!!
AJ gets booed in Minn for the same reason he gets booed everywhere else. He’s an ass. It’s the persona that he’s cultivated and he enjoys it. I have no problem with him as a player… he competes to win and he did NOTHING wrong by asking for the appeal to the 3rd base umpire. That was his job.
But there’s nothing wrong with Twins fans voicing their opinion of him at the games, either… it’s all part of the game.
And Ozzie got what now for getting into a yellling match with a fan? …Nothing?
Also, if the ump isn’t trigger happy on the ejection (which is usually the case when they’re as wrong as in that situation), Gardy doesn’t continue well past ejection.
Hiding behind “balls and strikes” is just giving the umps more power.
Like I said, if this were in New York or Boston the manager wouldn’t have gotten anything and the ump would’ve been suspended (see: Runge, Brian)
Go Royals! Beat the Pale Hose.
I’m not sure there’s any rule with regard to having a ‘conversation’ with an obnoxious fan. To me, that’s just not an issue in the least.
Ozzie was doing what he felt was his job by pulling his team off the field, just like Gardy was doing his. I think it backfired on him a bit, but I don’t fault him for anything he did in that game.
A manager’s got to do what he feels is necessary to put his team in the best position to win. Sometimes, it’s a tantrum, sometimes it’s playing some mind games. I’ve got no problem with any of that… it’s part of what makes the game worth following, to me.
Yeah, the suspension is unfortunately justified. But ozzie, he should have been hit with a delay of game fine or something. When he pulled his team from the field, he left the pitchers in the bullpen. Heck, they were even signing autographs on balls and handing them back to the fans. All while Ozzie says it’s too dangerous to be out there.
Add to that the shouting match with the fan, and it doesn’t seem like he should be getting off scott free.
I don’t know if I agree with Gardy being suspended for a game. But his tirade did make the game more entertaining.
While being a Twins fan, I do like Ozzie. He speaks his mind and doesn’t give the same stock answers as many other coaches/managers (”One game at a time”, “you have to commend the other team”,etc.). The shot of Ozzie getting into it with the 60+ year old fan was good stuff. I prefer to see players and coaches get emotional about their performances instead of treating it as merely their job.
C’mon T… seriously. You think an umpire should be suspended for missing a call and ejecting the manager immediately for arguing a ball/strike call? And you’re seriously equating that to what Runge did in initiating contact? I think you’re one of the more knowledgable commenters here so I have to believe, at some level, you even know yourself that you’re over reacting.
You are not supposed have heated discussions with a fans. Seems like that is only fueling the fans on. Whether or not it did is irrelevant it is not his job to yell at fans and possibly prolong the incident.
I agree with JimC. AJ does cultivate his “bad guy” persona but he really seems to do it to help his team win. He does incite fans but I think that it’s more acting to do what he thinks will give his team a better shot at winning.
He did the same stuff in a Twins uniform. Twins fans seem to forget that; I don’t remember them booing him then.
Fans don’t generally boo players on their own team, that all changes when they switch teams. Don’t see anything wrong with that. AJ is not exactly a likable guy.
One thing about Gardy and Ozzie… they give a damn about their players, their organizations and winning ballgames. They are anything but complacent and I just don’t see how you fault that. They’ll get fines and even suspensions. They’ll make mistakes. They’ll say things they probably shouldn’t (Ozzie in particular). But I’d play ball for either one of them and I’d be fine with either of them coaching a team I was a fan of. A player will compete for a manager they feel is willing to compete along side them.
Good point, Nora. He isn’t a likeable guy. Maybe I just think that booing a guy that seemed to enjoy playing for your team and left via trade seems wrong. If anything, I would understand why he may be a bit bitter since he played well for the Twins, only to be traded away to make room for Mauer.
Twins did what they needed to and it worked out well for both sides. Just think that maybe fans should appreciate what he did when he was a Twin.
I think I can appreciate what AJ did as a Twin and still vocally harass him for the crap he pulls now as “the enemy”.
But then I’m a complicated guy.
I’m not sure there’s any rule with regard to having a ‘conversation’ with an obnoxious fan. To me, that’s just not an issue in the least.
I disagree. But for the distance between the stands and the playing field at the dome, that could have become a very ugly incident. Ozzie is the alleged professional there and should have just ignored the fan, rather than egged him on. If Gardy can be suspended for having a ‘conversation’ with an umpire, Ozzie deserves the same. Perhaps he would just walk away next time. I doubt it, but the risk of a suspension and fine might be a deterrent.
AJ is the baseball equivalent of the ‘heel’ in pro wrestling or Dennis Rodman in basketball. He wants to be booed…as Crikket says, it’s all part of his persona. He loves the spotlight. When people boo him, it’s like giving a steak to a hungry dog. They both eat that stuff up.
The deterrent is that there WOULD be disciplinary action for initiating contact with a fan. If you don’t think fans and uniformed personnel don’t jaw at one another from time to time, you just don’t pay much attention. It happens and it’s unimportant unless/until it becomes physical… and that’s when disciplinary action is applied.
I agree with your comment on AJ, Fran… and I’d welcome someone with a touch of that personality to the Twins any time. I wouldn’t want a team full of them, but I think having 1-2 guys like that can be a good thing.
JC, so we have to wait for actual contact before discipline is warranted? I think given the circumstances, this was not the typical jawing you refer to…this was much closer to the NBA incident or the tackling of the Royals base coach. If MLB doesn’t nip that in the bud and looks past it, they have themselves to blame the next time it escalates beyond the norm.
Royals up 8-3! Buehrle gave up 14 hits in 4.1 innings!
I just didnt see it that way Fran… just an old guy being obnoxious and Ozzie talking back to him. Didn’t seem the least bit dangerous to me.
Re: the Royals game… Griffey removed for a pinch hitter in the 6th inning due to cramps. (Insert tasteless obscene joke here.)
It is very frustrating when umps/refs call a strike/personal foul that did not happen. That call on Span was a dream, not reality. The umpire should be disciplined. How can he justify his call? How can Gardenhire be faulted for being blown away by that call?
Umpires ought to get suspended for making calls as bad as that one.
Good to see. I dislike Buerhle as much or more then AJ. LOL
Two things about AJ.
First, in 2002 at spring training AJ was the one player who stayed after the game to sign autographs and was excellent with the kids.
Second, I think AJ is like Dino Ciccerelli was in the NHL. If he’s on your team you like/love him. But, if he’s on the other team you don’t like him at all!
I think AJ cultivates his image as others have said here. His most recent hair color would suggest that to me. My guess, and it’s strictly a guess, is that he’s not a bad guy off the field.
Love that game of baseball! Combination of skill and real emotions and acting. Ya think hockey players fight because they want to get punched in the face? They do it for the fans! Baseball, basketball, hockey, football, soccer….it’s all entertainment. Watching Gardy was a hoot. Watching what the Minny fans did in response….well I didn’t think Minny fans had it in them! Kudos! ‘Bout time we start acting like Yankee and Red Sox fans!
That’s great. Buehrle was quoted before his start last week about how ooh he’s nervous and messing himself with obvious sarcasm and then reminding everyone how these pennant race games are no big thing, because he’s pitched in the world series, etc. Then he goes out and coughs up a hairball in his next two starts. Maybe it will wipe the smirk off his face for five minutes. Love it.
Didn’t see Gardy drop kicking a hat as dangerous either. Maybe that is just me. Not his fault the fans decided to get into it he made no attempt to demand the fans throw things. Most of the fans are adults and are responsible for their own decisions.
What is wrong with Buerhle this year?
Which Twins player is going to be the Royals Champaign this year? Its not gonna be hunter
This will be the last comment on make on this subject. Nora, I’m pretty sure Gardy was suspended for continuing his tirade long after being ejected. It’s a league rule. He knew the rule. He knew the likely consequence. There is no similar rule about jawing with a drunk fan who’s being an ass. If you can’t see the difference, that’s ok, but it’s there.
JimCrikket. I’m with you in that I would take either Ozzie or Gardy as leader of my team. I think the mutual respect they have for each other when it comes to playing baseball speaks volumes. If Ozzie wasn’t a good manager he’d have been fired by now for some of the things he’s said and done(imo). I like the passion and character that both of these guys bring to the game. Makes it fun and interesting.
I just didnt see it that way Fran… just an old guy being obnoxious and Ozzie talking back to him. Didn’t seem the least bit dangerous to me.
Hard to say. Maybe old guy was emboldened by the distance between him and Ozzie. But if they were both at field level and if the guy had not been the fan equivalent of Don Zimmer, who knows? I just think Ozzie needs to know better than to act like that and a reminder in the form of a one-gamer and a few bucks from his wallet couldn’t hurt…and would also balance the scales a bit in this case.
Jim, there ought to be a rule against managers getting into it with fans. Gardy had really no other choice he was ejected within seconds. He ought to get his moneys worth. Still think the simple ejection was enough. Suspention to me is unnecissary.
Now… I will say this… the combination of Ozzie fearing for the safety of his team because they might be injured by flying caps being thrown on the field and their new savior, Griffey, being pulled from todays games due to cramps… well, it’s all I can do to keep from saying something totally tasteless and crude. ![]()
Appreciate the exchange of opinions, JC and others…this is what makes baseball such a great game. I am off for a bite and then to watch Slowey tame the Tribe. I smell first place!
I haven’t read every post, but unless you know what the fan(s) and Guillen were jawing about, there can’t be much to say. When it was all over, there was a shot on TV of Guillen in the dugout pointing up–I assume through the roof of the dugout and toward the fans above–and he was smiling as he talked with one of his coaches. The fans in the first row didn’t throw anything, did they?
Gardy is suspended for DQ Cap Night, now that’s funny..
Let me get this out of the way first since I see Crikket is here. There were so many responses to my power question on the other blog that I still have not had time to read them all. But in a quick scan, Crikket, you’re in first place as giving me an insight I had not previously thought of. Thanks and we’ll discuss further some other time.
AJ — he probably is a great guy off the field as most of these people are. That’s not the reason he gets booed. Everybody boos him other than the fans of his own team. That’s because of the attitude and antics he projects on behalf of his own current team. That’s his schtick. But it’s the other fans’ schtick to boo him for that behavior. Has nothing to do with prior service for your favorite team or being the bait in a very favorable trade for us. We’ll see how much cheering even Torii gets when the Halos come to the Dome next time (hopefully in the postseason!!).
Ozzie and Gardy — are middle infielders just more feisty than other position players?? LOL!! I do find Ozzie’s man love for Gardy and the Twins a bit much. I do question the sincerity of that at least a little bit.
This is total you know what. Pinella never got suspended when he threw the base up in Seattle, Cox never gets suspended, and Ozzie with all of his cussing and stuff never has either. I hate Bud Selig.
Not only was Griffey pulled…he was PH for! By that Wise fellow no less.
Its simple.
Gardy got ejected.
At that point, the only thing keeping Gardy from doing whatever he wants, is the threat of suspension and fine.
Gardy continued to show up the umpire, so he has to be fined and/or suspended.
Otherwise, an ejected manager can’t be controlled without forcing his team to forfeit and no umpire or league official wants to do that.
Once you make the team forfeit, there is nothing left the officials can do to control the fans of that team.
Thats a line you never want to cross.
Did something happen to Quentin also?
Stupid blackout rules — that game is on Fox except that it’s not truly a national telecast. I live elsewhere and we’re getting the Yanks-Angels game. You’d think we could at least get the Sox game on MLB.TV? NOOOOOO.
Oh oh I see Anderson and Dye have both hit dingers.
The line that shouldn’t be crossed is an official’s decision to make a ruling that can’t be justified. You call what you SEE, not what you THINK you see.
I love it. It’s all part of the game. The element of human error that can take place causing the jaw-to-jaw tirades that never change a call are part of what gives the game character. By far the best fit I have ever seen from Gardy. By the way, that tantrum fired up the team and helped win the most important game of the year. Well worth the suspension. Good job, Gardy!
Why wasn’t that moron line-judge Ken Fraser(?) who reversed the easy, right call suspended? Worse than the initial Jermaine Dye 12-foot-foul home run call two days before. Honestly, if Gardy doesn’t blow up, something is wrong. MLB should be ashamed for suspending him. The fans were not incited by Gardy, they were incited by the atrocious call.
Royals a choking away their lead. Argh.
“You call what you SEE, not what you THINK you see.”
How do you know, that what you saw, was ACTUALLY what you saw, and NOT what you “thought you saw”?
Royals brought in Soria with 1 out in the 8th.
Is that allowed… bring a closer in before the 9th? ![]()
Just wondering–if Gaborik scores three goals in the first period of the opener this fall, will the opposing team leave the ice?
Hello out there…somebody tell me why Anderson ph for Quentin?
Sane–and I believe you are, indeed, sane–you know because you know, instead of taking your authority to the next level, just to prove your authority. That’s what the guy did. He over-ruled fact.
Stupid blackout rules — that game is on Fox except that it’s not truly a national telecast. I live elsewhere and we’re getting the Yanks-Angels game. You’d think we could at least get the Sox game on MLB.TV? NOOOOOO.
Chaps my you-know-what.
“I’m pretty sure Gardy was suspended for continuing his tirade long after being ejected. It’s a league rule. He knew the rule. He knew the likely consequence. There is no similar rule about jawing with a drunk fan who’s being an ass. If you can’t see the difference, that’s ok, but it’s there.”
That’s fine if that’s the rules, but they should also be consistent about it. How many times have we seen managers continue to argue AFTER getting ejected, but never get suspended for doing this. I’m talking about tirades too.
My guess is this wasn’t the main reason why Gardenhire was suspended.
Who loves Grady?! The great hat night!
Now the morons at Fox won’t even put a game on! throw me a freaking bone!
Damn Griffey looks old in CF. He made a diving catch straight out of an old-timers game. Great effort grandpa!
Beisbol:
It’s 96 with a heat index of 110 in KC. The Sox have bench players available, so it’s not worth having someone get heat exhaustion/stroke.
By the way Twins fans, way to show class. The article is about Gardy’s behavior getting him a one game suspension. Not about how much you hate the Sox or what you think about AJ or Ozzie. A lot of you are making some pretty baseless claims and giving your fellow Twins fans a bad name (potentially). And whoever said that Ozzie not having been suspended before, that’s not true. Look it up!
Dave, at least they showed some hilites. ![]()
VegasDave–Fox pays big money to have exclusive rights to MLB games on Saturday afternoons and MLBTV has to honor those rights, just as local TV does.
Twins can take over first place tonight–KC held on to beat the Chisox.
Royals hold on. Twins now have a chance to take over the lead.
jake,
“Sane–and I believe you are, indeed, sane”
Thanks for that testimonial!
I anticipate needing to show it to the authorities someday.
Thanks Schultzy but I’m afraid the weather conditions don’t translate on GAmecast!
Still surprised though. Quentin isn’t that old and he’s hitting way better than Anderson. Must be REALLY HOT!!
If you want to see no class, from Sox fans, check out the blog over at ESPN on same subject.
Who made you the blog police Schultzy? Freedom of speech. Sox fans talk trash about the twins on their boards as well.
Jake can’t disagree more on the blackout. Where Dave lives and where I live Fox is carrying a different national game - Yanks/Halos. Because of Fox it’s not on MLB Extra Innings nor MLB.TV. Since we cannot possibly watch that game on Fox why should we not be able to get the feed through either of the MLB outlets? I do believe the network technology is smart enough these days to figure out that your cable tv or your computer is not in the Fox broadcast territory. I’d be OK if they truly carried a national game, same game for everybody, and then all other games would still be available via MLB.
Sane–I will make a good witness on your behalf. Coat and tie, shined shoes, beer breath, the whole shebang.
jake,
Outstanding!
Your beer breath will be something that you will have in common with my other witnesses.
Beisbol-a-Go-Go–Es todo de dinero.
Sane–Are we twins? (Not just Twins fans?)
At least we were creative to figure out a way to take advantage of extending the 7th inning- meaning more time for beer drinking.
jake,
“Are we twins?”
I remember my birth vividly.
You weren’t there.
I loved the game and the Gardy tirade! It was classic! The hat kick was a perfect “10″! You have to love Ozzie as a manager because he does anything he can think of to fire up his team. I just think he over-does it sometimes like that game, and his time folds!
Schultzy, please! We hate the White Sox so who cares if some blog is ranting about AJ! All I ask for and hope for from anyone participating is to know your facts, don’t get personal and try to be objective! Otherwise, bring it on Sox fans!
I love the Twins and thought the call was totally bogus but was not happy about the ball(s) being thrown on the field. That is class-less! The hats, quite funny! I hardly think Ozzie could justify taking his team off the field if hit by a cotton hat!
The jawing between Ozzie and the fan was priceless! Great entertainment! Ozzie is always good for that! And kudos to the fan for not taking any crap from Ozzie neither!
Go Twins! The division is ripe for the taking! Love the Tigers too! What a choke job!
I’m old enough to maybe have been your Mom’s OB-GYN, Sane, so maybe I WAS there. You might even have been a cute baby, in that scenario. But it’s better to be sane, than cute. Nice combo just now with Go-Go and Denard.
You can’t fine or suspend the umpire for making a bad call. It happens and is part of the game.
If you fine an umpire for making a bad call you will have to fine players who make an error or strike out.
PC Pansie - where is your delmon now??? We are down 3 to 1 because that worthless excuse of a left fielder can’t catch a ball. How much longer is this going to be allowed to go on? Cut him!!!! Cut him now…he and livan can play catch together somewhere else!! It is absolutely pathetic that when you are making a run at first place, you have a second rate minor leaguer playing left field. My grandma could do better and she is 80 years old.
Big Buff Buns–You’re right about the defensive side, but, cut him? I don’t think so. DH him.
Gardy was suspended for objecting to complete incompetency or dishonesty. the umpire should be suspended or sent to the minors or completely discharged.
gardy is completely in line here in comparison to the bac umpiring
Wrong call…suspend the ump for one game.
Umps make mistakes. They are human. Managers can’t go crazy over a mistake.
State your cause, get thrown out and take it. But don’t go loco on us.
What a surprise..they have a chance to take first on a RARE occassion that Kansas City actually wins a game and they choke at home to a Cleveland team that has already given up on the season and get one run off of a forgotten pitcher who was maybe semi-relevant years ago. I am so sick and tired of them squandering chances to pass Chicago when it’s there waiting for them. What is this, the 5th time they’ve had a chance and failed? Almost as frustrating as them turning into a wide eyed little league team when playing on the east coast. Man up and take initiative.
I love that he drop-kicked his hat and it actually went that high in the air. He said in the post-game interview that he still hadn’t found it. Juvenile, but hilarious.
Definitely a big fan of the passion. Nothing like a tirade to kick-start a team.
**The Twins should have made some kind of trade**
