Something that might make you revisit your breakfast…

Posted on September 25th, 2008 – 9:17 AM
By La Velle

Got word late last night that this man would start for the Tigers if the they have to play a makeup game on Monday against the White Sox.

And here’s confirmation of that in today’s Detroit Free Press.

Don’t know what to make of this. There’s always the chance Garcia would be motivated to beat the team he won a World Series with in 2005 - and get back at manager Ozzie Guillen.

But his long absence because of shoulder surgery can’t be ignored.

Here’s the write-up of his Sept. 17 start against Texas.

The Twins could win their final four games but still have to root for Garcia to go Ponce de Leon on the White Sox on Monday.

On to better things.

Writers often second-guess themselves, and I kinda wished I would have thrown in a detail in today’s gamer about the 42,126 who showed up at the Dome last night. They yelled for Nick Blackburn when he got in jams and were fired up as Jose Mijares opened with three balls to Jim Thome in the eighth before settling down and getting three outs.

I was mildly surprised that only 35,225 showed up on Tuesday but fans responded on Wednesday. I checked with a Twins official this morning and they are so busy with ticket sales for tonight’s game that they think it could be the largest crowd of the series.

I scanned the crowd last night for old Homer Hankies but saw few. Maybe there will be more out tonight with first place in the division up for grabs. But I want everyone to know that I checked yesterday and, yes, the 2008 Homer Hankies have been ordered.

I think the large crowds the past 2 nights have really given this club the boost it needed coming off an uninspiring road trip. The 10th man comes through!!

Garcia is terrible and has hardly pitched. It’s a shame that Detroit would give the Sox a freebe like that.

I noticed that the Brewers have their own “hankies” out at their games now…How original

Gardenhire and Jim Leyland are tight. Maybe he can make a call and tell Leyland not to play the “B” squad that day. It would be greatly appreciated here.

Although it’s just 10 innings, Garcia hasn’t been that bad for Detroit so far this year.

3 HR’s allowed in those 10 innings isn’t good…but you know.

Quick question for LEN3…

Is Mijares eligible for the postseason roster?

Bullmoose says:

Is Mijares eligible for the postseason roster?

Good question! I don’t think so because the playoff rosters are set at the end of August and I don’t think Mijjares was even on the 40-man roster then. I hope I’m wrong because the Twins would need him to have any success.

SethSpeaks says:

September 25th, 2008 at 10:19 am

This question has been asked and answered several times the last few days on these blogs…

Technically, Mijares is not eligible since he was not on the 40 man roster before Sept. 1. However, as we know, there are technicalities made famous by the Angels and Francisco Rodriguez the year they won the World Series (2002?). The Twins have a pitcher DL spot for Neshek that Mijares could take. So, technically he isn’t, but through that loophole, he will be on there!

ES16 says:

I don’t think it would be bad if Leyland did play the b-squad. Those guys would at least be motivated to try and prove something. Based on how they have been playing, I think most of the Detroit starters are already working on their golf swings.

winston says:

It’s good Gardenhire did not put Cuddyer in the lineup. The Curse of the Cuddyer has been avoided by not putting him in the lineup and leaving him on the bench the past two games. The result was two consecutive wins for the Twins. The Curse of the Cuddyer would doom the Twins to losing the race for the division championship with the White Sox. Cuddyer is a jinx upon the Twins. Lets hope Gardenhire does not put him in the lineup tonight. The Twins will be in first place if Cuddyer is kept out of the lineup and the Curse of the Cuddyer is avoided.

Agreed… either way they’re a bad last place team. It’s not like pitching Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson or Kenny Rogers or Justin Verlander would be any better!

What does anyone think of a repeat of the 2 teams from he 65 series this year?

Chad says:

Great defense showed last night, the play by Harris, and Gomez in the 9th. Crowd lovin it. Lets hope the Twins carry it into tonight and can rough up Gavin Floyd. Hopefully there are a few more homer hankies than last night, just wish fishwrap factory West Side would have been all over that before the start of this series. Regardless…2 down, 4 to go, lets hope Cliff Lee and those pesky Indians (who are only 7.5 games back of the South Siders) can shut down the White Sox and we don’t have to worry about that Garcia start.

MikeEsq says:

can anyone explain to me why the website http://www.coolstandings.com has the twins percentage points ABOVE the Sox as favorites to win? I understand the Sox (possibly)have another game to play against Detroit, but I guess I’m missing the math on that one.

Works for me, jimmy bee. Just don’t ask me to put any money on it.

Seth, I agree, too. There’s nobody on that Tiger staff I would feel excited about having start that Monday game and pinning the Twins’ playoff chances on their performance. All the more reason for the Twins to just win out and let Cleveland nail the BitchSox coffin shut.

JimCrikket says:

September 25th, 2008 at 10:41 am

MikeEsq, I would assume it has to do with the Twins probably being favored at home tonight and then somewhat favored to win more games against KC over the weekend than the Sox are likely to win over Cleveland.

Not that it matters much. This is pretty much a toss-up right now with the advantage shifting immediately to the winner of tonight’s game.

JimCrikket says:

September 25th, 2008 at 10:43 am

maybe, jimmy bee… but I’ve got the guy on a fantasy team and I can assure you he’s stunk the place up early and often this season. He just wants this season to end. Garcia is at least in a position to give a damn about the result. Verlander would just be mailing it in.

Answer to if Majires is eligable for the post season roster. Credit goes to Howard Sinker’s blog post “A Fan’s View” today:

“K-Rod Clause. The quick version: If a team has a player eligible for the postseason who is hurt and can’t play, it can get permission from the commissioner’s office to replace him on the postseason roster with a player who was in the minors with that team as of August 31 and is still with the organization at the end of the season.

Players on the disabled list as of August 31 are among those eligible for postseason play. The rules require that a pitcher be swapped out for a pitcher and a position player for a position player.

Can you say Pat Neshek?”

Didn’t the Angels bring up K-rod in 2003 right at the end and nobody had seen him before in the postseason? Not saying the Mijares is the next K-rod, but don’t the Twins have the option to do the same thing with him?

Occasionally, if it’s a big series, I go to the web site of the main paper of the city the Twins are playing & see what their writers are saying. ChicagoTribune.com is the place & they have Ozzie on there with a video waxing about how the Sox aren’t hitting in the clutch, but is giving no excuses for their veteran players. Interesting … he wasn’t at all impressed with Blackburn, saying he was often one pitch away from being out of the game. I agree, Blackburn eeked along by the skin of his teeth — Twins very fortunate. Funny, one of their writers is proposing the Sox forfeit their game tonight & just come back home and focus on sweeping the Indians

Bullmoose says:

September 25th, 2008 at 11:21 am

It’s hard for me to get upset over who Detroit plays or doesn’t play if it comes to that when the Twins would have popped the champagne by now with just the reasonable facsimile of a bullpen performance in a handful of games.

Another interesting thing there … unlike the Strib, the Chicago Tribune doesn not allow reader’s postings to automatically appear beneath articles, they filter them. Here’s their disclaimer: “Comments are not posted immediately. We review them first in an effort to remove foul language, commercial messages, irrelevancies and unfair attacks.” With some of the harsh & stupid comments that show on some Strib postings, it may come to that here also.

cmathewson says:

September 25th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

Posted this earlier but somehow it got deleted:

If Harris had not caught that ball, it would have been called Fan Interference. The fan clearly reached over the field of play and touched Haris’s glove, if not the ball. I’m glad Harris caught it, taking the play out of the hands of the ump. Imagine if he doesn’t catch it and the ump doesn’t call fan interference. Gardy might still be kicking his hat.

In the Bartman play, Alou reached into the stands and Bartman was clearly in in the stands when he interfered with Alous’ attempted catch, so no fan interference was called, nor should it have been.

It’s always amazed me the abuse he has taken. Cubs fans practically expected him to deflect the ball into Alou’s outstretched glove or something. He was just minding his own business trying to catch a foul ball in a playoff game when Alou reached over to catch it. It would have been a great catch even if Bartman had not reached up (but not out over the field) for the ball. Even Alou himself said the ball was barely catchable and Bartman did little to change that. Yet he’s the most hated man on the north side (and much beloved on the south side) for mostly being an innocent bystander.

Walter Johnson says:

September 25th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

On the Thome double, Denard got to the ball but was on the warning track and couldn’t put on the brakes. Had to let his momentum carry him into the wall to stop. That was enough time for Thome to plod into second.

cmathewson says:

September 25th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Once and for all:

There was no practical way to put a retractable roof on the stadium at that site. As it is, they have to build the walk-up plaza and one of the ticket offices over the freeway. The roof infrastructure would not fit on that small footprint.

If they had managed to secure the land on the river before the Guthrie got it, maybe we would have gotten a retractable roof. But the anti-stadium crowd (led by Tim Pawlenty) was just too organized to let that happen. It makes me laugh that the same folks are now crying because we didn’t add a $250 million retractable roof to the plan. If they’d wanted it two years earlier, they could have gotten it. I guess history was never their strong suit.

cmathewson says:

September 25th, 2008 at 12:35 pm

I’m glad someone brought up the Thome double. Why on earth was he playing so far toward center? If he’s positioned normally, that’s a harmless single and nobody scores that inning.

Also…what would have occurred if the MN bartman had actually touched the ball?

Walter Johnson says:

September 25th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

RichKid,

I believe the rule used to be that any ball that hit the roof in foul territory and came back into the field of play could be caught. Then they changed it so now it is a dead ball. I guess that on Tuesday it hit a speaker or the roof directly over fair territory.

sane says:

Heinie Manush,
“Thome hits a grounder between Morneau and Alexi and gets a double. How did that happen?”

That was an inexcusable screwup.
The outfield and infield alignment were not coordinated. The outfielders could see that the infield was not playing Thome to hit oppo, so they should have corrected themselves (or the infield) before allowing the Blackburn to pitch.
Some coach (White?) is responsible for coordinating the outfield and infield alignment with the pitching plan-of-attack.
But Mauer and the outfielders should have noticed that that particular alignment did not pass the stink teat.

And like I said, the first time I was at the game during an MVP chant, Morneau deposited a ball in the upper deck in right field for the Twins second homer in as many ABs.

In the playoffs.

Regarding roof for new stadium:

It’s not that it isn’t practical to have a retractable roof for the new stadium. The issue is that the design doesn’t support it. When the State wouldn’t pay for it the Twins designed the stadium without it and provided no support to add it in the future.

Regarding Dead Balls:

I don’t believe a ball hitting the roof is dead. A ball hitting a speaker/guy wire in foul territory is dead.

The Dome last night was just nuts. Just before the game started, crowds of people in the lower concourses moving opposite ways — a massive block of humanity with nowhere to move. Good thing a new stadium is on the way. More enjoyable going to games only about half full. The Twins won the tough one last night, but Slowey still needs to be on his game tonight. He got the job done, so who cares. But it just seems like he used to go after the hitters more aggressively and now he is trying to nibble and finesse.

Besides not chanting “MVP” when Morneau’s up at the plate …. fans should not do The Wave when the Twins are batting. It’s very distracting for both the offense. They were doing it last night — some hyped up kids started it in CF & it actually made it around a time or two. Didn’t The Wave go out with the 80’s? Here it is about 20 years later. Half the fans who go to games know nothing about baseball. They’re just there to eat, drink and scream. They’re paying customers, too, but those antics are very dumb.

I don’t know if I’ve seen Nathan pump it up to 95+ much at all this year, I remember wondering earlier in the year what was up with his velocity because it was always reading 92-93. I think he has been using his other pitches more this year, and that can contribute to a loss of velocity due to the more inconsistency of pitch delivery.

Not like it matters though, he’s still an incredible closer.

I believe both balls that hit a speaker or guide wire were “out of play”. The one on Tuesday simply wasn’t caught so no need to even make a call there. Both were foul ball strikes.

Yes, Nathan pitched around Swisher last night. You knew he was gearing to put a good swing on a fast ball for a solo home run, but Nathan wasn’t going to give him much. I agree that Nathan waited so long between his pitches with nobody on base. ?? Maybe he realized he didn’t have his best stuff going, as shown from the Ramirez at bat, so he was extra careful. He had to have thrown 20+ pitches. I wonder what the amount of pitchs for him before Gardy decides he’s not available the next night?

Perkins. Boof would’ve likely been dealt. (Or Reyes)

Ron Artest??? Milton Bradley???

Ron Artest got hit with a cup. I recall Bradley getting upset over radio comments he was told about later..but never anything with fans.

Hey, here’s one for you baseball old timers: Why don’t they steal home any more? Rod Carew stole home 7 times back in the late 60’s, and I probably haven’t seen it attempted since the 70’s. Have pitchers changed their technique (throwing out of the stretch instead of a windup?) to shut runners on 3rd down? Maybe Go-Go should try it sometime. Might be a good question for Dick & Bert to muse over.

Fehler says:

Half hoping if it comes down to it, that the Tigers will be figting to stay out of last place against KC. Then they’d have something to fight for.

JimCrikket says:

September 25th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Back then, pitchers were more likely to go to their windup instead of stretching with a runner on 3B. Now, especially if it’s anyone with speed, they’ll usually pitch from the stretch. Makes it almost impossible to steal home.

it was nice to hear dick and bert talking about punto getting his unifrom dirty in the new stadium 2010. guess he will be getting at least a 2 yr new contract, could be longer if gardy has anything to say about it.
what would we do without those 20+ rbi every year and needless slides into first???

baseball_insighter,
“Why don’t they steal home any more?”

Here is a guess.
Because signals are more complicated(to avoid signal theft) these days, more signals are missed by the players.
Stealing home, when the batter misses the sign and swings the bat, is dangerous to a baserunner’s health.
Stealing home already has an inherent success risk.
Adding the risk of (accessory to)manslaughter to the equation may be the cause of its lack of popularity with coaches.

I’ve got a great kid. He got an extra ticket to tonight’s game and is taking his old man. I’ll be 2nd row, next to Red Dog.

Let’s do this thing!

The perfect starting line-up/batting order for the Twins: 3rd - Punto, 2nd -Punto, Catch - Mauer, 1st - Morneau, SS - Punto, LF - Punto, CF - Punto, RF -Punto, DH - Punto… You gotta love Punto!!!

JimCrikket and Sane … thanks for the input on stealing home. I’ve been watching baseball for almost 40 years & have never seen anyone try it. I just remember seeing a grainy replay of Rod Carew doing in, like, 1968. I think someone should try it again, as long as they get their signs right. ;) It’d be interesting to know who last tried it in a MLB game and who last was successful at it. Maybe it was Carew.

baseball_insighter says:

September 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

ES16 …. got it - thanks.
It doesn’t say whether anyone ever got injured trying it in MLB, but maybe over the years they’ve decided there’s too much money in this whole deal to be messing around like that. Still, you know someone’s going to try it sometime again, eventually, and maybe we’ll be watching.

“don’t know if I’ve seen Nathan pump it up to 95+ much at all this year,………..Not like it matters though, he’s still an incredible closer.”

I disagree- I think it does matter. I think that Nathan is down a good 2-3mph from past years. That’s fine when he is locating the ball, but the fastball that he used to blow past people, will now occasionally get blasted. I think this is a trend to monitor over the next year.

Thanks. Should be a good time. I’ll be the one not holding a circle me sign and the one not chanting MVP until after Mornie gets his hits. Hopefully we have a relaxing game and can chat up Red Dog again. He will visit when things are going well. Good guy.

I agree Carlos G regarding Red Dog. From what I have seen of him he is a great presence that keeps the clubhouse loose and everyone laughing. Have a great time at the game. If the Twins win tonight I am thinking of going this weekend. Does anyone know if playoff tickets can be bought in single form or what the break down is

I seem to recall a time with Carew where he stole home while Killebrew was hitting… and didn’t know he was coming.

Not a good thing, when you think about it.

Have a great time tonight, Carlos… and yeah, you’ve got a great kid. Nothing like going to a big ballgame with your dad/son. It’s what the game is all about imo.
