Blake (like Dennis Reyes) is a type B free agent. The Dodgers will get a sandwich pick but it will not come from the Twins.

Boneyard, How is it that we've "seen what he can do" (referring to Kubel), when Ortiz had similar numbers at the same age, and 300 more career at-bats, yet had not begun to show us what he could do?

I'm not convinced we have a logjam. Cuddyer can be moved around and DH against lefties. The 3 guys who finished the year in the OF can stay where they are. Kubel is the usual DH against righties and can play at need in the OF.

However, if the club absolutely feels it has to trade someone, Span is not the guy. He has too much service time left on the cheap. Same with Gomez. Young still may develop into a good ball player (his D does make me dizzy sometimes, though). It's early yet for all three and the ceilings may be high indeed. Cuddyer is versatile (he can play RF, LF, 1B, 2B, and 3B) and, although he was pathetic in his 70 games last year, he offers potential for some desperately needed right-handed pop. Besides, due to the size of his contract compared to his paltry production and injuries last year, who would give much for him? The odd man out, if anyone in the group goes, is Kubel. I think we've seen what he can do. There's not much more he's going to develop into. He is a decent, but not good, major league hitter who can play the outfield on occasion and may be attractive a team starved for left-handed bats. He might be a good fit for the Angels, for instance. On his own, though, he won't get us a good major league-ready SS or 3B, though.

As far as the "logjam" is concerned, there's really only four OFers at any given time, considering Kubel is likely going to be a DH before he's a fielder.

*(Blake) is a FA, and will not cost us any players.

Unless he costs us a draft pick or two. I'm not sure about that.

MacDaddy,

Excellent response and I agree with about everything you wrote. Span is at a high and this is the right time to deal him imo. Love Denard, but sometimes you have to do tough things in business.
