Saturday update
Posted on February 14th, 2009 – 1:02 PMBy La Velle
Today’s informal workout was highlighted by the arrival of backup catcher Mike Redmond and his non-stop chatter.
“Let’s see how the first swing of spring goes,” Redmond said as he stepped into a batting cage. Seconds later, his cricket-style swing sent a flip throw by Brain Buscher to what would have been right field. “Just like riding a bike.” Redmond said.
Redmond, Buscher, Matt Macri, Carlos Gomez, Toby Gardenhire and others later took batting practice on a back field. But Redmond ended up on an adjecent field chatting away with Kevin Slowey and Glen Perkins as they went through long toss drills.
The sun was something Redmond hadn’t seen in awhile, and his pale skin showed it. He spent the offseason in Washington, worked out at Gonzaga and went outside one time all offseason to play catch with Jeremy Affeldt when the temperature reached 35.
I’ve seen two Twins players who definitely look bigger than last season. One is Justin Morneau. The other is Brian Buscher.
Buscher spent the offseason doing boot camp-style workouts that have given him a more muscular look. Let’s see how it translates on the field.
Gomez worked out Saturday as his father looked on. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told me that Gomez’s job with the Mets was to mess with teammates and keep things loose on the bench, which he does with the Twins.
“He calls me Santa Claus,” Gardenhire said.
Among the riveting subjects discussed behind the batting cage today were boot camp workouts, fishing, batted balls hitting birds, golf, the cost of diapers in the USA vs the Dominican Republic and Plato, Mn.
Yes, Plato. Twins minor league field coordinator Joel Lepel is from there, and reads this blog.
“You looking for something to write in your blog?” Lepel asked. “Tell everyone at the coffee shop in Plato I said hi.”
The popular Lepel has thrown batting practice and hit grounders to players this week as everyone gears up for real workouts next week.
A couple observations:
Matt Macri looks like someone who should be able to drive the ball well. This would be a good year for him to start doing it.
Infielder Steven Tolleson looks like a player. Sometimes its easy to tell the prospects from the major leaguers during these workouts. Tolleson fits right in. I’m sure it helps that his father played in the majors. He’s coming off of a nice Arizona Fall League stint during which he batted .383 and is moving up the list of the Twins’ top prospects. He’s one player I want to see in spring games.
I been asked by baseball blog czar Howard Sinker to let everyone know that there’s a Star Tribune Twins Facebook page. For more information go here.

Looks like the Mets picked up ol’ Livan.

Alright fellow Twins fans, here is the plan: We are over here in Peoria (AZ) from San Diego for my son’s hockey tourney. We are right across the street from the Peoria Sports Complex (I think that is where Crede is working out). My plan is to invite the young man to the Tilted Kilt or Hooter’s for some after workout lunch and drinks. After you guys get Jerry Bell to fax the contract to me I have Crede sign an autograph (wink, wink) and wah la. We have a third baseman for 3mil plus 5 mil in incentives. I’m a 6′6″ 250 lbs Marine so if he or Boras try to renig on the contract me and my combat buddies pay them a visit. So B.C, go over and have Jerry fax that contract down. Wish me luck.
Santa Claus? Haha, I love it.
Whats the word on Crede? ESPN says that the Twins are waiting for the price to come down to 6-7 mil/yr. Would the Twins really pay that for him and a 1 year deal? Let us know LaVelle..
Gomez, Casilla, Mauer, Cuddyer, Morneau, Crede, Hudson, Young, Span-what a lineup. I say we sign Hudson and Crede and keep Punto as super Sub. let Kube and Cuddyer split time between DH and Right Field and if one of the outfielders go down we are still set!
WS for 2009-nothing less is acceptable.
It’s so nice to hear these guys are back on the field.
Also nice to hear that Buscher and Morneau are getting bigger and stronger.
I predict that one of these young lads (Tolleson, etc.) are going to win an infield job coming out of Spring Training.
Crede still has a very good shot to come to Minnesota. But to say go out and sign Orlando Hudson is just ignorant. If you get Crede and he stays healthy and Punto can put up his normal .280 BAvg, thinga would be fine. After all we already have a 2nd baseman who has showed better speed and pop then hudson in casilla.
Casilla= 98 games, .281, 7 hr, 50 rbi, 7 stl, 58 runs w/ .333 ob and .379 slug in 385 abs.
Hudson= 107 games, .305, 8hr, 41 rbi, 4 stl, 54 runs w/ .367 ob and .450 slug in 407 abs.
Hudson was out with injuries and there are qeustions about his pop after the wrist injury, and Casilla put up those numbers AFTER getting called up halfway through the season.
Go figure.
Macri has looked like a guy who should drive the ball for 3 three years so why would he all of a sudden start this year?
La Velle, who goes from the 40 man when the Ayala signing is official? Macri was my leading candidate.
La Velle, The Twins will win the division. The StarTrib doesn’t need you: You heard it here first!
I really love the Twins, and I love your column.
I don’t want Joe Crede, I like the team that we have. 91 rbis from third base is nothing to sneeze at. Let’s wait until July to see if we need any changes. No way is Crede worth that kind of money. He would be another big disappointment. Give our platooners their chance, or go to the farm. It’s the MN way, and it works.
A guy like Hudson/Cabrera would be an upgrade if it meant they’d bump Punto out of SS (either by Casilla sliding over or by being the new SS)
The question is which is the bigger upgrade.
Hudson/Cabrera over Punto
Crede over Harris/Buscher
We headed to the complex today to see who was around. Definite nice chatter from the boys. Ask Gomez if he likes to emphasize his backside on purpose (watch how he stands sometime) What happened to blogging about Lepel hitting the bat during BP on only his second pitch? Thanks for the comment on Gomez’s dad being there, we were all wondering who that was!
Drewski — look at Casilla after he came back from his injury break and tell me if you’re still comfortable with his stats. I’m not.
Good question T…And I think I would be more intrigued by the Crede over Harris/Buscher option.
However, I kinda completely forgot about O-Dog (aka Orlando Hudson). Upon some thought, he would be a fine option for this club, if you were to move Casilla to short and Punto to third with Harris. I heard the Royals want him. I don’t think the Twins have been linked to him at all.
I think Cabrera to the A’s makes complete sense.
I’m starting to wonder about a third mystery team in the running for Crede.
Hudson and Cabrera are type A free agents. Forget about them.
La Velle, one of the names you mention really sticks out like a sore thumb: Toby Gardenhire. Why is he in the big boy camp? He is not in the 40 man roster and neither was he invited. Gardy’s nepotism is pretty bad.
a third mystery team in the running for Crede
the Phillies and the Reds watched the workouts… no mysteries.
T,
I agree with you on the question of which is the bigger upgrade.
Offensively, I think Cabrerra/Hudson would be a bigger impact, and allow Punto to do what he would be best at, and be a world class defensive backup at all three infield positions. However defensively, replacing Buscher could be huge.
The biggest thing is that Crede gives the Twins a Legit homerun scare. So there are reasons to go either way.
The one thing that it does say is that they still have a great opportunity to upgrade the team, and that still gives me hope that Bill Smith can get the job done, but he’s running out of time in my mind.
“Redmond said as he stepped into a batting cage. Seconds later, his cricket-style swing sent a flip throw by Brain Buscher to what would have been right field.”
Lavelle– it is Brian….unless maybe he is a Brain and then if anything the Twins would have the smartest 3b platoon in baseball
Buscher loaded and ready to go. I witnessed his boot camp workouts.
He will be much improved. Of course, the Twins will probably sign Crede.
BC: I must respectfully disagree with you assessment of Crede as “a legit homerun scare.”
It would be more accurate to call him a “legit hit .250 with an OBP of .300 and a send whole bunch of fly balls to die on the warning track of the hitters’ graveyard that is the Metrodome” scare. If he doesn’t get hurt, that is.
I’m scared already!
BC u are right on Crede brings legit HR and RBI to the lineup. Besides also stellar defense.
Its a win win for the team and himself to be a Twin.
fin a mutual salary and bring him in!!
These other posters are just imposters.
Jim from Italy, crawl back in your hole.
Mr. Rambo, I must say that you were a bit harsh on Jim from Italy. I read his last posting, and he did not say anything aggressive or offensive.
In fact, I agree with everything he said. Jim, you are a reasonable person. Stay out of your hole!
Twins don’t need Joe Crede. They can win 100 games with their current roster. Butcher will hit .300 and have 100 RBI.
Twins should sign Orlando Hudson and Orlando Cabrera both. Then you’ve got M&M feat. the Orlando Boyz.
T - if they sign Orlando Cabrera, then they have to get Miguel Cabrera.
GBG, It’s all a crapshoot but I say ignore Casilla’s stats after the injury and I am very optimistic. For 2 weeks they were saying he would be out for the year but he came back and his numbers dropped. Kind of tough to be on a hot streak and then come back from injury and just pick it right back up. I was afraid he would pick up some bad habits protecting his thumb but after some time off he hit .343 with .437 obp in winter league. (someone correct me if these were not his final numbers) I am plenty comfortable with that.
Butcher will be a bust. Only Crede can save this year.
T,
If they sign both Orlando’s where does that leave us with Casilla? Unless we move Cabrera to 3rd base?
Iconoclast,
Crede’s glove at 70% is better than Buscher, and his range at 70% is equal to that of Harris. Estimates are that he’s at 75% right now… he’s already defensively better than what we have, and he’s not even at 100% yet.
As for the people who keep bringing up the 91 RBI from 3rd base… Only 59 of them came from Harris and Buscher… Buscher will get the majority of the atbats being a left handed hitter, meaning that the number of unearned runs that score resulting from his errors is going to be greater as well.
So let’s not talk 91 RBI… let’s talk 59 RBI… and tell me that Crede isn’t an upgrade.
In all honesty guys, and gals… the thing I don’t understand is that the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Royals are lousy teams… we have 74 free agents out there… some of them are more than capable of upgrading areas of need for both teams. The prices are low, a one year contract with some of these guys could produce midseason trade opportunities for more prospects, or type A/B free agents which could produce more draft picks and further the development of the teams… meanwhile the fans have something to cheer about. This shattered economy could have been the greatest opportunity (until a salary cap) for parody in MLB.
Crede had 55 RBI last year. What is 75% of that? Buscher got his 47 RBI in 70 games. I agree about his defense but give him some credit for having a decent year at the plate. I don’t know about 91 but if we get 80 from the 7 spot I would hope that Young, Cuddyer and Kubel can pick up the slack. I am all for signing Crede if he is 100%. No one can play in the big leagues at 75%. I admit I don’t know how you measure that though.
B.C.,
You make a good argument for Crede. I concede that Crede would be a better fielder than Buscher, and likely even better than Harris. But I really doubt that he would be any sort of upgrade at the plate. In fact, his inability to draw walks would be a detriment to this lineup that already features too many free-swingers (Gomez, Young, etc.).
Though none of the Twins’ potential options at 3B are overwhelming, there are a lot of young players who deserve a look, not just Brian Buscher. Matt Macri, Luke Hughes, Matt Tolbert and Brendan Harris all have some potential. I think that the Twins should let them battle it out in Spring Training, and the winner will be a better player for it. But I’m sick of the Twins habit of brining in has-beens (I’m talking about you, Livan Hernandez and Adam Everett!) to take away jobs from their talented young players.
If they realize later that none of these guys are up to the challenge, they can trade away some of their extra minor league pitchers (Humber, Mulvey, Swarzak, etc.) for a real third baseman.
Of course, if the Twins do sign Crede, and I am pretty sure they will, becasue nobody else wants him, I’ll be cheering for him just like everyone else. And I would be more than happy to be proven wrong.
“So let’s not talk 91 RBI… let’s talk 59 RBI… and tell me that Crede isn’t an upgrade.”
How about we stop talking about RBI altogether, because it has more to do with the people in front of the hitter instead of the actual hitter?
BC,
I’m not certain, but didn’t the Twins get 91 RBI’s total from the 3B position? Even if Lamb got 32. Wasn’t he judged to be inadequate? A lesser preference than Buscher/Harris? Wouldn’t it make sense to expect at least the same product from Buscher/Harris?
I agree with you about the parity. If we weren’t fairly comfortable with our outfield and DH picking up Abreu for 5 mil would have well within the Twins comfort level. Salary cap makes sense. It would keep salaries more reasonable. Big markets would still have a huge advantage because if the cap were set at $150 mil the Twins still wouldn’t spend nearly that much and maybe it would make it a little easier to keep homegrown stars. If not a salary cap how abot a 200 or 300 percent luxury cap rather than 40%. Yankees ignore the luxury tax cuz they gross a billion dollars. Make it harsh enough so even they have to think twice about it.
read an interesting sporting news article yesterday concerning mauer..as i read it i started to think that maybe its time mauer started bringing his 3rd basemans glove out…before you all go nuts, he mentioned that he played that position before and it would be a positive way of extending his career, so??? i love him as our catcher, but if there is one guy on this team talented enough to make that change, it is mauer. mauer and morneau on the corners is not all bad and bring up the ramos kid if hes all that we hear he is…i still would like to see crede sign and just take over the damn job this year and if valencia doesnt pan out, the mauer idea starts looking more and more like the real deal down the road ……
I’m with you icon. If Crede signs I will be behind him 100% to do well. Seriously, on paper I think this is the best team the Twins have had this decade. A starting rotation that are all capable of throwing shutouts and a very young team that looks like it can score a lot of runs. Maybe not 3rd most but top 10 sounds doable. Give them a chance. Not enough history to really predict so we might not win 80 but enough history that 95 isn’t out of the question either.
mj1:
I like the idea of Mauer eventually moving to third, but not this year.
The biggest problem with that is that the Twins don’t have anyone to catch if Mauer moves to third. Redmond is a great backup, but he is too old to be an everyday option. They have a couple of prospects that can catch, and some that can hit, but none that can do both. We’d just be shifting our problem position 90 feet down the third base line.
While I applaud Buscher for working hard to bulk up this offseason, I can’t help but feel that it won’t do wonders for his already suspect defense. In fact, I think you can make the argument it might make it worse.
But, again, kudos to him for working hard this offseason.
I still would like to see Crede at the right price.
no way would i suggest mauer this year, as i agree, we would just be shifting the problem, as you say….i really hope that crede just solves the problem totally and maybe buscher will get some at bats spelling crede and others, as i like his bat, but his defense sucks…buscher, harris, redmond, gomez or cuddy makes a fairly decent bench, but what about tolbert–damn i hate to see him in AAA-as i think he is a player…and a real spark plug, but where does he fit..?? would be nice if the pitching staff could get by with one less arm and keep 5 hitters..but i am afraid it will not be the case….
span/cuddy rf
casilla/harris 2b
mauer/redmond c
morneau 1b
crede/buscher 3b
kubel/cuddy dh
young lf
gomez/span cf
punto/harris ss
dont know if that lineup is good enough or not, but thats probably what we will have coming out of spring trainin…imho ……
I’m glad Buscher worked hard to bulk up this off season,i hope he also took alot of ground balls.Koskie became a good fielder with alot of work on ground balls.

Don’t fret about Toby, there’s alot of guys here. Some not even in our organization, working out, and helping our players. The Feiner brothers have been here quite awhile, and Korey catches the pitchers. Buck Buchanan works here with the guys, and will head to KC spring training on tuesday. This is all volunteer work now, and done by many different players. I haven’t seen Mournea on the field yet.
You can bet some that aren’t here are working in like places somewhere else.
“Toby Gardenhire. Why is he in the big boy camp?”
Because camp hasn’t started yet.
Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow.
Position players report February 17 (WBC players) or February 22.
That is when camp starts.
If Toby is there after February 22, it must be “Take Your Child to Work Day”.
as for my salary cap comment..
The only way to make it fair is to put a cap on the top, and a floor on the bottom.
Not 150 million. 110 million at the top. Not 15.1 million or whatever the Marlins are going to sneak by with this year… 65 million.
Teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets… and others over 110 million currently, would be fined dollar for dollar over. I am not sure what the structure would be to get teams like the yankees down to 110 million, or how long that would take to put into play though… so my idea does need work, and could use some help to figure out a good way to make it happen. I’d love to see Jeter playing for the Pirates, and to see Alex Rodriguez playing for the Marlins to help balance the game out though!
Geno, I agree
Iconoclast, I think Crede’s defense will be a huge upgrade. I think that putting him between Morneau and Kubel will give him the pitches to hit, and I would like to see them put Gomez in AAA to start this season, and go with an OF of Young in LF, Span in CF, and Cuddyer in RF. Pray that Cuddy and/young start hitting the ball well, and one or the other can be traded… then bring back Gomez (the twins are cheap, and I think they would like to keep him from arbitration as long as they can being he’s a Boras guy).
BC,
IF the Twins sign Crede, you better hope you get those 59 RBI from Harris & Buscher, because Crede will be lucky to get the 32 RBI Lamb got from the DL.
Regards,
I have the solution to both the bullpen and the third base problem. Bill Smith should send prospects Ben Revere and Phil Humber to Cleveland for Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn and Willie Mays Hayes.
Vaughn may not have the control to be our closer, and he does have a history of trouble with the law, but he can hit 100 mph with his fastbal, and I think he would fit right in in the Twins’ clubhouse. Plus, I have a feeling that if he got a better pair of glasses he could be an excellent setup man.
Hayes is not a natural third baseman, but he is agile and athletic. Plus, he has Minnesota connections, since he made a movie with former governor Jesse Ventura.
Add those two to this team, and I guarantee we will win a World Series, unless the players get suspended during the playoffs for brawling with White Sox catcher A.J. “Jack Parkman” Pierzynski.
BCB,
the salary floor in the NFL is 85.2% of the cap so it has to be closer in the MLB. The average team salary in 2008 was about $90 mil. For the Union to agree, the average salary has to remain at least at that level. So you would be looking at about $100 mil cap and $85 mil floor. Most likely it will have to be a soft cap (like the NBA, allowing teams to go something like 25% over or under and pay penalties)
BCB,
Gomez was the best defensive outfielder in the majors last year. Why would you want him in AAA?
Completely agree about Gomez…Didn’t he end up like 4th on the team in terms of value for wins accoring to FanGraph???
I’ve read some good stuff in regards to him working damn hard to work counts and take more/recognize pitches this offseason. I think you’re going to see some real improvement.
People need to just stop having the thought of Gomez starting the year in AAA enter their minds because it just ain’t going to happen. And it shouldn’t.
Oh, and there is also that minor thing of him leading the team in steals last year….That’s a weapon and/or threat you want to keep.
jkucenic,
I don’t think you can discount chemistry, either. The way Gomez, Span and Casilla get each other fired up is fun to watch.
Completely agree…Gomez can add a kind of spark to a game that is rare.
I remember back when Jose Reyes had a rough start in New York. They were patient with him and he just kept getting better.
I think we have a similar talent on our hands with Gomez, I really do.
If they sign both Orlando’s where does that leave us with Casilla?
To be fair. I was mostly joking. I also wouldn’t complain if the Twins rounded Jaques, Andruw, and Garret Jones to play the outfield this year. ![]()

Looks like Giants aren’t looking to blink at the $11MM that Crede wants.
One of the reasons: They’re hoping to have the payroll space to work with midseason. Kinda like what some were saying the Twins wouldn’t mind doing.
I wish the Twins would’ve used some of that payroll space last midseason when they needed to acquire bullpen help and ended up with Eddie Guardado.
Why would this year be any different???
That not paying now to have “mid-season payroll flexibility” is like building a new house and plan it one bedroom short in the beginning so you can potentially build a 2-bedroom addition if you are going to have twins down the road.
does not make much sense…
IF the Twins sign Crede, you better hope you get those 59 RBI from Harris & Buscher, because Crede will be lucky to get the 32 RBI Lamb got from the DL.
The problem, Dragon, as has been explained to you multiple times, is not “if the Twins sign Crede and he gets hurt, then what?”
The problem is “if the Twins DON’T sign Crede, and Buscher/Harris suck, THEN what?”
In the former, there’s no real damage. You are out nothing but money. You’re back to what you started with for a third baseman.
In the latter, there is no backup. But the Pohlad’s have and extra few million, which is nice I guess.
“I wish the Twins would’ve used some of that payroll space last midseason when they needed to acquire bullpen help and ended up with Eddie Guardado. ”
They tried. You do remember that they put waiver claims on both Beltre AND Washburn, plus, if you look at the stats of Guardado, Bradford, and Hawkins, Eddie was arguably the best of the three.
“You are out nothing but money.”
That’s really easy to say when you aren’t the one shelling out $7 million.
USAF Chief,
Thanks for the condesention.
Yes you have explained your point of view, which is your right.
Until notified otherwise, I am allowed to disagree with you.
So to feel good about the Twins, we pay $10 or 15 mil for Crede to suck…God I love this country.
Maybe we could solve ALL the bloggers problems with the Pohlads by signing Crede a 4 yr $115 mil contract. Then the Twins can be JUST LIKE the Yankees and have their own Pavano contract.
Regards,
Pete D…I’m not sure I agree with you about Guardado and Bradford/Hawkins comparison.
In checking the stats, especially when you look at when they joined their new respective teams, Eddie ain’t coming out on top. And from what I remember, the Twins were pretty much afraid to use him at all the last couple weeks of the season. His 7.71 ERA with the club is not that pristine.
jku,
Check Eddie’s stats with the Rangers before the trade.
55 appearances; 3-3 3.64; Four for four in save opportunities.
It was a good pickup, gone bad.
The Twins FO actually thought they were getting help, based on those stats.
It wasn’t a phony attempt to fool anyone
“The problem is “if the Twins DON’T sign Crede, and Buscher/Harris suck, THEN what?…there is no backup.”
The backup is when teams start dropping out of the race, (Seattle) and off-loading salary (Beltre) for prospects.
Fair enough…
And how do the Twins convince Beltre to waive his no trade clause?
Oh yeah-he would waive it for a nice fat new contract with $$$ that the Twins no way in hell would spend.
People, forget about Beltre!
Shaun,
“he would waive it for a nice fat new contract with $$$ that the Twins no way in hell would spend.”
If the Mariners are comatose in 4th place, and the Twins are in a pennant race and want to rent Beltre for three months, there may be a way in hell.
What Players do you have to give up for a half year of Beltre? The Twins don’t want to re-sign him. They are waiting on Valencia, so they have money to sign other players. Forget about Beltre.
“Forget about Beltre”
You can’t make me!
“What Players do you have to give up for a half year of Beltre?”
Teams off-loading salary are usually looking for prospects. (Swarzak, Duensing, Mulvey, Delaney, Slama, etc.)
wish the Twins would’ve used some of that payroll space last midseason when they needed to acquire bullpen help and ended up with Eddie Guardado.
They tried to get Beltre and Washburn from Seattle.
The problem with suggesting trades and offering contracts is that you typically have to rely on the other party to actually ACCEPT the trade or contract.
The Mariners (and Beltre) was only an example of how a new third baseman may become available, if Harris and Buscher both crap out, after Crede goes elsewhere.
thrylos,
“That not paying now to have “mid-season payroll flexibility” is like building a new house and plan it one bedroom short in the beginning so you can potentially build a 2-bedroom addition if you are going to have twins down the road.”
Horrible analogy, my friend. The house is built.
Think instead of owning racehorses. You have a stall or two open prior to the start of racing season, and you attend every auction, looking for a horse worth buying, one with the potential to win. Maybe Crede’s the right horse at the right price for the stall, but maybe not, so you leave the stall empty for now. Maybe it’s a late auction where the horse is Beltre, but your first race as his owner is The Kentucky Derby.
bop,
Owning racehorses is a scenario that we all can easily identify with.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
I know sid, I know. Hard to imagine having the luxury of owning a thoroughbred stable, or a professional baseball club.

bop,
You may be right.
The guys who lose $100 at the track, probably second-guess the owners as much as the guys who buy Twins tickets at the Dome.
Of course they do, sid. They have the Race Track Forum. That makes them a helluva lot smarter than some dishonest, cheap, rich-ass owner, and his fumbling trainer.
